Striding into Africa
Fedics Site Services (FSS) Zambia lights the beacon at ZIMEC 2013.
In June, Zambia hosted its third annual Zambia International Mining and Energy
Conference (ZIMEC), at the new Government Complex in Lusaka. The event focuses
on mining and energy issues, with an associated trade exhibition. The theme for this
year, Developing Zambia’s Mining and Energy Sectors Towards 2020, attracted over
400 delegates from 28 countries.
Fedics Site Services (FSS), being mandated by Tsebo to grow the organisation’s footprint
in Africa, has identified Zambia as a target market. So when this opportunity to
engage with potential clients in Zambia came up, FSS was proudly represented
at ZIMEC by Royce van der Zwan (Tsebo Group Marketing Director), Andrew
St Clair-Laing (MD Fedics Site Services), Siyanda Ndlovu (BDM Fedics
Site Services) and Johan van der Westhuizen (BDM Fedics Site Services
Zambia). Significant value came from touring the exhibition hall and
promoting the dynamic solutions that FSS can quickly activate - even in
remote areas. The show assisted us in growing our pool of target clients
and gaining access to decision makers – many of whom expressed an
immediate need for FSS’ expertise. We made contact with over 128
delegates and visitors.
ZIMEC is the 4th largest mining conference in the
world – and one at which we clearly left our footprint!

Mutual respect
Fedics and Old Mutual share a commitment to caring
– and a solid partnership going back four decades.
Aligned with Old Mutual’s charitable efforts, the Fedics
team regularly contributes catering at cost to various
charities and community projects, including Old Mutual
client projects and Tsebo Foundation initiatives.
One organisation Old Mutual supports is MOT SA, by
making their facilities at Mutual Park available for
MOT’s training and annual AGM. Our Fedics team onsite also supports MOT, by catering at their meetings.

Today’s formidable Fedics (Old Mutual) Management Team:
Front from left: Franz Allers (Snr Catering Manager), Jeanne Gregory (Project Manager),
Lorraine Everson (Manager: Beverages) and Beatrice Miller (Manager: Life@west end).
Back from left: Yulande Snyman (Snr Financial Controller), Lynette McDonald (Fedics
Executive Manager), Safwaan Amansure (OM Executive Chef), Christal Ackers (Assistant
Manager: Presto and Vending), Rosie Jacob (Assistant Manager: Sustain)
and Andrea Ankers (Retail Manager: Life@west end).
Fresh Express visited Fedics at Mutual Park (Cape Town)
and discovered this was just one of many letters of thanks.
We were also amazed at the contract scope the team has
built up. Fedics Project Manager: Jeanne Gregory and
Senior Catering Manager Franz Allers tell us more:
“We have a long-standing relationship with Old Mutual,
based on high quality catering”, says Jeanne. “Mutual
Park accommodates 9500 permanent and contractor
staff and, as their preferred supplier, our 124-strong
Fedics team must meet their diverse catering needs.”
The team’s daily output is mind-blowing. Executive
Chef Debbie Pearl and Manager Lynette McDonald run
the Executives Kitchen. Meanwhile the main kitchen,
under the expert management of Executive Chef
Safwaan Amansure, produces 950 meals per day!
“Safwaan is arguably one of the most pressured,
most versatile chefs within Tsebo Catering. Besides
overseeing all those meals and more with the support
of three other chefs, he assists the SA Chefs Association
and the Hotel School, who send students for practical
experience in his busy kitchen”, says Franz.
Chef Safwaan makes time to evaluate
and assess all trainees, before sending them
off with a wealth of knowledge.
It’s impossible to summarise this award winning team’s
many achievements on one page. They have clearly
been ‘living the brand’ for a long time and have built up
a great mutual understanding with our client.
The team caters for various outlets at
Mutual Park, as well as
@west end:
• Executive: Finger lunches, cocktails, sitdown formal lunches and dinners, and more;
• Functions: Gala Diners, year-end functions,
road shows, and more;
• Presto: Two upmarket coffee shops;
• Essentials: Grab and go outlet;
• Beverages: Tea service and beverage vending;
• Snack vendors: Throughout Mutual Park;
• Green’s Cool OM crèche: 280+ staff kiddies

Basil Read appointed FSS to set up catering at its
remote Project Site in May 2012. FSS manages this
‘home away from home’ for the hardworking Basil
Read staff, catering mainly for Directors, Management
and their sub-contractors. Following a recent audit of
our performance on-site, the 19-strong team scored
a top rating of ‘Category A’. Paul Boucher, Catering
Manager on-site, tells more:
“We started off catering for 35 people in May 2012. The
following month, 60. Today it’s 163 people, and still
growing. The Fedics team must supply three meals
daily and manage regular functions. Meanwhile, Site
Services Cleaning handles the cleaning of 14 offices
and 44 Park Homes.”

make us proud
We are proud to support a project which will improve vital
water infrastructure and enable economic growth.
Fedics Healthwise is the first catering company in SA to
implement and train dedicated Ward Hostesses, to manage
an attentive, caring patient experience.
Many of us know the difference a kind smile or prompt
attention makes when confined to a hospital bed.
Yet professional hospitality within the healthcare sector
had been scarce until recently, when our aspirant
Ward Hostesses entered into an exciting development
programme to empower them with knowledge on how
to efficiently and sensitively interact with patients - who
really appreciate that caring touch.
Each Ward Hostess will undergo three, intensive levels
of training. Rentia Pretorius facilitates the programme
in all Medi Clinic and Netcare hospitals and Healthwise
Facilitator, Amu Mabuza, is responsible for all Life
Healthcare and independent units. 200 Ward Hostesses
have now graduated their Level 1 (of 3) training, and
trainers are currently taking them through to the next
level. We wish them all the best, and think ultimately of

On the border between Limpopo and Mpumalanga,
the Trans-Caledon Tunnel Authority (TCTA) appointed

the patients, often scared, lonely or frustrated, who will
take comfort from the professionalism, diligence and
warmth of our pioneering Ward Hostesses.
So what do our Ward Hostesses learn at Level 1?
Trainers spend 3 months at each contract, taking staff
through theory and practical in-house training on
health & safety, hygiene, neatness, presentation and
how to read patient charts, enabling them to serve the
correct meals to each patient. They are imbued with the
confidence to communicate with hospital staff. Ward
Hostesses are able to show newer staff the ropes, in an
effective and clear manner. Look out for more updates
on this new programme soon!
Mbalenhli Chiliza, Regional Training Facilitator
in Durban, and Susan Moffat, Training Facilitator
in Bloem, recently embarked on Level 1 in those regions.

TsAfrika launches their healthy living
campaign in Cape Town to great excitement.
Healthy yet

the winning combo
blended by
TsAfrika!
TsAfrika Catering Solutions delivers catering at the corporate level, making every
occasion innovative and memorable. In July they launched a healthy eating campaign
at Cape Town sites, with a “Crazy carrots day” featuring carrot-based samples and tasters to
lure site staff, plus a host of information from the Chefs about the benefits of carrots and a healthy
diet. The units at DHL and the other sites had carrots with ribbons wrapped around them, shooter
glasses filled with fresh juice, and more. Have you crunched a carrot today?

Fedics staff commemorate the start of the Soweto
riots of 1976. Fedics staff at CBI Electric: Aberdare ATC
Telecom Cables (Pty) Ltd celebrated Youth Day in style by
dressing up in symbolic school uniforms, while preparing
food for their customers. Pictured here, the Grade 7

Congratulations to Thabani, Ignatius and family
