Year 7 Camp ICS Cross Country Run
18 June 2014 Year 7 Camp Volume 21 Issue 8 ICS Cross Country Run The Year 7 Outdoor Adventure Camp (28 - 30 May) was at El Shaddai near Wellington. They had many interesting experiences like cooking with a trangia, the Vertical Challenge (crates stacked to the ceiling), and Initiatives, teaching teamwork. They investigated macro-invertebrates and nature during walks, and handled reptiles. “On the Nature Walk, we were shown what Aboriginals used to weave with and how they made it flat for weaving. We were also shown what we could eat from plants.” (Scott Pitkin) “We held a blue-tongued lizard named Bruce, a turtle named Leonardo, a frilled necked lizard named Charmander and Monty the python snake.” (Brittany Caruana) There were fun activities like the Giant Swing (voted most favourite activity), canoeing, rock climbing and archery. According to students, devotion times really made them think. “I learnt God doesn’t break His promises” (Darcy Poole) and “God is unlike humans and He doesn’t lie. We must listen to God’s words. We looked at what makes a good relationship.” (Billy Frame) Mrs Petrie CCS sent a team to compete at the Inter-Christian Schools Cross Country Championship on Friday 23rd May. Our students ran well and had a lot of fun in the outdoors. Unfortunately we did not win any placings or team awards this year. Nonetheless, each runner ran to the best of his or her ability and represented our school with pride. Special mention goes to: Jordan Galloway 4th U13 Boys 3km race (12m 34s) Gideon Arok 5th U13 Boys 3km race (12m 47s) Aimee Kochergen 7th U14 Girls 3km race (15m 06s) Tanay Decrea 11th U14 Girls 3km race (15m 29s) Ashlee Schoene 12th U13 Girls 3km race (15m 28s) Mr Penn CRAIGMORE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL Newsletter History Excursion Pray for Senior Exams During Week 8 & 9, our Year 10, 11 & 12s will be doing their Semester 1 exams. Please pray for them, especially for the Year 10s as many of them experience formal exam conditions for the first time. Please pray for each of the Senior students, that they will not let the stress of exam time overcome them, that they will have good sessions of revision and their minds are clear when they are sitting the exam for each subject. Please pray for our Year 12s as they deal with the stress of their study loads over this time. Miss Fairley's Year 3 class and Mrs Davies' Year 12 Modern History Class joined forces to commemorate this year's 100 Year Commemoration of the outbreak of World War One. On 28 June, they visited the World War One Sensory Experience Museum at the Keswick Army Barracks, followed by a tour of the Salisbury RSL club to view the WW1 memorabilia exhibition. The day provided an invaluable insight into both the military aspects of war, and the poignant personal elements. Highlights for the students included firing an (unloaded!) machine gun, climbing into a trench and inspecting models of battles fought at Gallipoli, the Somme, Verdun and the Marne. War veterans spoke to students about the importance of remembering our fallen forefathers, who fought for the freedom we have in our country. All in all, it was a resounding success, and a powerful learning experience. Teddy Bears Picnic My favourite part was when we fired the machine gun. It vibrated as the fake bullets were shot. It was the best! (Damien W, Year 3) I really liked seeing the photos of the models the man from the Salisbury RSL made. He made lots of different boats. One was a metre long. (Jessica P, Year 3) Mrs Davies & Mrs Fairley Recently, the Reception students and their Year 4 ‘Buddies’ had a fun day together at the Teddy Bears Picnic. They played games, compared teddies and ate yummy, healthy food. Mrs Power’s Year 4 student, Jordan Lawrence, reported that they “had fun with the Receptions at the Teddy Bear Picnic. It was a good day filled with playing games and sharing fruit.” Adelaide, also Year 4, enjoyed playing all the games and making sure the Receptions were walking in a straight line when moving to different areas. Miss Harvey's Receptions agreed that the Teddy Bear picnic “was fun. We played games with our Year 4 buddies, then we had a fruit picnic with lots of yummy fruit.” Mrs Power & Miss Harvey Page 2 CRAIGMORE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL Newsletter SAPOL Band: “Cop This!” Voice of Youth The Festival Theatre offered tickets for our Year 3-5 students, to attend SAPOL Band’s “Cop This 8“ 27 May, an awesome live Concert experience. Overall, this was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Craigmore Christian School's winning streak in the public speaking stakes is continuing, with two of our students recently winning the semi-final of the Voice of Youth competition. Kaitlin Hockley and Alexandra Teleman spoke convincingly on their respective prepared topics: "If it Ain't Broke Don't Fix it" and "A Valuable Legacy" and gave impressive short notice speeches. They will now be competing in the State Final, which will be held on Saturday 21 June at Parliament House. Theodore Whitehead and Isaac Kathner also spoke eloquently in the competition, which is regarded as the premier Australian public speaking competition for Senior School students. All the best for the finals, girls - you are tremendous ambassadors for our school! Mrs Davies Japanese Chapel The Junior School Japanese Chapel will be held Monday, Week 10, at 9am. All year levels will presenting something they have been learning Japanese so far this year. Most classes will either singing a song or showing a video of their learning. on be in be All parents are encouraged to attend. It only happens once a year so if you miss it, you miss out! Mrs Cupit Mrs Scott “On the warm, crispy morning of the excursion the Grade 3, 4 & 5s made their journey to the city on three buses. After a very comfortable ride we arrived at the theatre and had our delicious recess before finding our way into the theatre, where many other schools were seated. Suddenly it started with an enchanting jazz open, which was followed by Roar, The Simpsons, Captain America, Spiderman, Angry Birds and the Muppets theme song. In between there were safety lessons about the police departments. We saw a video about bullying in the UK— that was really engaging and had a very valuable lesson. Bernice Kpahn (Year 5) Zoo Careers Day A couple of months ago I was lucky enough to be accepted to attend the Zoos SA Career Day 2014. This experience was a chance of a life time, as we were not only able to see and feed the animals up close, but we learnt about the necessary dietary needs for the range of animals that are currently living at the zoos. The zookeepers showed us their daily routine and how they prepare the animals’ food. We also were able to take a tour of the zoo behind the scenes which was really interesting. They showed us the rat and mice room, which is where they keep food for the reptiles. Later in the day, I spoke to a keeper who specialised in snakes, and she told me that they recently found a Coastal Taipan, which is the most venomous snake, “deadlier than the inland taipan, and it was aggressive.” I held a Woma Python. We were given an hour break to go and explore the zoo. By the end of the day I made some new friends, had an exciting experience and learnt a great deal. We are having some ongoing issues with our front car park. People are parking in the disabled car park and in the drop off lane, or stopping in the car park to drop off children without parking. This is causing the traffic flow to be held up, and makes the area unsafe for our children. As part of the re-launch and re-naming, we have planned a range of improvements including: completion of the gym, iPads for Junior School, Year 12 Laptops, a Trade Skills Centre and extended Home Ec facilities, and improvements to the oval. Our new name is not geographical, but one that has grown out of our own history. Our current logo contains the words “Hope”, “Opportunity” and “Promise” and we for many years have added “Excellence” as something toward which we strive. These words spell out HOPE— a word that causes us to look at our present and to our future through a new set of eyes. Driver Ed Training Driver Education Course: Cert II Driver Competence is delivered over one semester and gains 25 Stage 1 SACE credits. You must have a current Learners Permit and access to a qualified supervising driver and vehicle for regular driving practice.
