M In the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
M Brothers and sisters in Christ, as God’s children we know, we confess, we believe that
God’s Word is true.
C Why, then, is it such a struggle to stand up for the truth of God’s Word and live
by that truth?
M The answer is found in our own sinful weakness. Fear, doubt, pride, and the desire for
acceptance move us to compromise and disregard God’s truth. Acknowledging our
weakness and our guilt, we come before our heavenly Father with humble hearts and
confess our sin.
All Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin.
For faithless worrying and selfish pride,
For sins of habit and sins of choice,
For the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do,
You should cast me away from your presence forever.
O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus’ sake.
M Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. In his great mercy, God made
us alive in Christ even when we were dead in our sins. Hear the word of Christ
through his called servant: I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of
the Son † and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.

Response 238
Oh, Bless the Lord, My Soul
Oh, bless the Lord, my soul!
Let all within me join
And aid my tongue to bless his name
Whose favors are divine.
Oh, bless the Lord, my soul,
Nor let his mercies lie
Forgotten in unthankfulness
And without praises die.
'Tis he forgives my sins;
'Tis he relieves my pain;
'Tis he that heals my sicknesses
And makes me young again.
Prayer of the Day
M The Lord be with you.
C And also with you
M Let us pray.
Heavenly Father, in your grace you have given us your holy Word.
C In your Word you make clear what is right, what is wrong, and the only answer
to our sinful condition.
M Give us hearts that cherish your truth more and more,
C so that we are ready to face anger, rejection, even death, rather than compromise
your Word in any way.
M We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy
Spirit, one God, now
C and forever. Amen.
First Lesson
Hebrews 12:2-11, Bible page 1193
The Lord disciplines those he loves.
Verse of the Day
M Alleluia! Alleluia! Since the children have flesh and blood, [Jesus] too shared in their
humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—
that is, the devil—and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of
death. Alleluia!
Second Lesson
Ephesians 6:1-4, page 1159
Instructions to children and fathers.

“Me Without YOU: Permissive”
Nicene Creed
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from
true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all
things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was
buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will
come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have
no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in
unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken
through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the
resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayer of the Church
The Sacrament of Holy Communion
M The Lord be with you.
C And also with you.
M Lift up your hearts.
C We lift them up to the Lord.
M Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C It is good and right so to do.
| Page 3 |
M It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks,
O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord,
who has called us to be his own so that we may live under him in his kingdom and
serve him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness. Therefore, with all
the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song:
(Tune: Aurelia, CW 372)
O holy, holy, holy
Lord God of pow’r and might,
Your glory, earth and heaven
In countless ways recite.
Hosanna! Come and save us,
Lord God of hosts on high,
And in your grace and mercy
Receive our fervent cry.
Hosanna in the highest!
How truly blest is he
Who in God’s name is coming
To set his people free!
He comes to bring salvation
And with his blood outpoured,
Deliver us from bondage—
Hosanna, mighty Lord!
Prayer of Thanksgiving
M Blessed are you, O Lord of heaven and earth. We praise and thank you for sending
your Son, Jesus Christ, and we remember the great acts of love through which he has
ransomed us from sin, death, and the devil’s power.
By his incarnation, he became one with us.
By his perfect life, he fulfilled your holy will.
By his innocent death, he overcame hell.
By his rising from the grave, he opened heaven.
Invited by your grace and instructed by your Word, we approach your table with
repentant and joyful hearts. Strengthen us through Christ’s body and blood, and
preserve us in the true faith until we feast with him and all his ransomed people in
glory everlasting.
C Amen.
Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be
done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as
we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever.
Amen.
Words of Institution
M The peace of the Lord be with you always.
C Amen.

O Word of God Incarnate
Lord Jesus Christ, You Have Prepared
Song of Simeon
(Tune: Anthes, CW 339)
O Lord, now let your servant
Depart in peace, assured:
For I have seen your promised
Incarnate, saving Word—
A Light that will enlighten
All gloom where Gentiles dwell;
The brilliant, crowning glory
Of those in Israel!
| Page 5 |
All glory to the Father,
All glory to the Son,
All glory to the Spirit,
Forever three in one;
For as in the beginning,
Is now, shall ever be,
God’s triune name resounding
Through all eternity.
Closing Prayer
M We give you thanks, O Lord, for the foretaste of the heavenly banquet that you have
given us to eat and to drink in this sacrament. Through this gift you have fed our faith,
nourished our hope, and strengthened our love. By your Spirit help us to live as your
holy people until that day when you will receive us as your guests at the wedding supper of the Lamb, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and
forever.
C Amen.
Blessing
M The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.
The Lord look on you with favor and † give you peace.
C Amen.

Our Communion Practice
The Lord’s Supper is a fellowship meal. In this meal Jesus expresses his fellowship with us by giving us
his body and blood for the forgiveness of sins. In this meal we also express our fellowship with each other, that is, that we are united in a common confession of faith.
We at St. Paul’s want everyone to enjoy this fellowship meal. However, we cannot ask someone to express agreement with us until we give that person an opportunity to discover what we teach. That is
why we schedule frequent Second Connection Classes to provide an overview of our teachings. Please
ask one of our pastors for the date when the next class begins.
If you are a member of St. Paul’s or a member of a WELS or ELS congregation, we invite you to express
our common confession by communing with us. You may wish to use the “Personal Preparation for Holy Communion” on page 156 of Christian Worship to examine yourself. Please register your intent to
commune as a member or guest by filling out the Connection Card and placing it in the offering plate.
The light colored cups in the center of the individual cup tray contain non-alcoholic wine. Gluten-free
wafers are located in the trays on the Communion rail. If you need a gluten-free wafer, please inform an
usher as you approach the rail. The first pew in the right center section is reserved for those who have
difficulty approaching the Communion rail.

FALL WORSHIP SERIES: ME WITHOUT YOU
The New Testament writers encourage us that everything
that was written in the past was written for our benefit, “so
that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the
encouragement they provide we might have hope” (Romans
15:4).
Our “back to school” series brings us face to face with the
spiritual weaknesses that plagued the Bible’s heroes and villains of old. What’s amazing is how incredibly contemporary their stories are. As their stories speak to our story, our comfort is Jesus, who alone
can rescue us from both the guilt and the tyranny of our sinful nature.
NEXT WEEK’S THEME: PARANOID
Taking other’s words and actions in the worst possible way coupled with a failure to trust God and his
promises sets the scene for irrational fear and suspicion in our lives. What burdens could be lifted if I
simply put my trust in God and his promises. Check out these Scripture passages: 1 John 4:18-21,
John 20:19-23, and 1Samuel 22:6-16

UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN
The United Way campaign has begun. One of our members has found that he can give to St. Paul’s
through the United Way. In this way he helps his firm with their goal of 100% participation, yet also
supports the ministry that is most dear to him. If you are unsure if your firm participates in this,
ask your human resources department.
Our vision is that by every possible means we bring every
person in our area of influence closer to Christ through
regular worship, small groups, and serving together.

Bible Study Discussion Starters
Life application materials for us in Connector Groups, home devotions, and other small groups .
1. Highs and Lows: What was a high point from your life this past week? A low point?
2. This week, our church sermon series continues the theme, "Me WIthout You." We are exploring how
our relationship with the Lord empowers us to replace permissiveness with the virtue of selfdiscipline. What are some areas of life in which permissiveness (a lack of self-control) is destructive?
3. Long ago, a priest named Eli was permissive with his two sons, who were also clergy, yet lacked
godly self-discipline. Skim 1 Samuel 2:12-26 for details about the situation. How did Eli fail? What
appetites did Eli's two sons indulge? How would your church be affected if these same behaviors
were present today?
4. What happens when people in roles of responsibility (parents, teachers, policemen, judges) are overly permissive? In what areas of your life is it important to avoid permissiveness?
5. It appears that Eli's sons failed to resist various appealing - but immoral - "opportunities" that existed
around them and near them. Read Mark 7:14-23. How does Jesus' teaching here help you understand the true root of permissiveness?
6. Humankind has always struggled with self-discipline. What emotion does the Lord encourage Cain to
struggle against in Genesis 4:1-8? Over what areas of your own personality or behavior would you
like greater control?
7. Why do you think self-control is so hard for people to practice consistently in all areas of their lives?
8. Jot down some thoughts about what the following Bible quotations have to say about about selfdiscipline.
Matthew 26:36-44 Ezekiel 36:26-27 Romans 7:15-25 9. According to Romans 6:1-14, how are Christian baptism and self-discipline related? If you are baptized, how can your own baptism be helpful as you grow in the area of self-discipline?
