From the prez
Hello and welcome, again, to
the latest issue of the Magic City
Blues
Society’s
monthly
newsletter. While we are still in
the middle of summer,
historically the “slow” time of
the year for both official and
unofficial MCBS events, July
nevertheless has several events
that should be of interest to
MCBSers of all shapes and sizes.
To start with, David Evans
returns to Birmingham and
Moonlight on the Mountain July
24. David was last here a couple
of years ago at a house concert.
If you like your blues of the
acoustic fingerpicking style,
David is right up your alley. The
MCBS
is
assisting
with
sponsorship at the Shelby
County Arts Council’s Shelby
County Shindig on July 16 in
Columbia. The MCBS (well,
Roger Stephenson in particular)
has booked all the musical acts
for this day-long “barbecue,
blues and brews” event.
Featuring Sassy Brown and
Glenn Butts, the Janelle Frost
Duo (winner of the 2015 MCBS
Battle of the Blues Bands duo
category,) Josh Butler & Garry
Edmonds doing a rare duo, and
2 BLU & the Lucky Stiffs all
performing and leading up to
the headliner, David Coen.
More information, including
advance tickets, can be found at
http://www.shelbycountyshindi
g.com.
The third July event is the
annual Batttle of the Blues
Bands on the 24th at Iron City.
The
perennial
favorite
showcases the best of our
homegrown
blues
talent.
Winners will be chosen in both
the solo/duo and band
categories and will be eligible to
attend the International Blues
Challenge
in
Memphis
representing the Magic City
Blues Society. So come on out
and cheer on your local
favorites.
And closing out the month of
July, Australia’s Anni Piper will
be hitting the Red Wolf on the
30th. For those of you who’ve
yet to make it out to the Red
Wolf – you just don’t know what
you’re missing.
As mentioned in the June
newsletter, we all mourn the
passing of longtime MCBS
member, MCBS board member,
and all around blues fan Cabbie
Bowes. Her devotion to the
MCBS will be sorely missed.
Nevertheless, Cabbie’s passing
has left the board with an
opening. If anyone with a very
basic accounting background
has an interest in volunteering
and “doing the books” for the
MCBS please let me or any of
the other board members
know.
I hope to see you at some
shows.

Celebrating cabbie’s life
On Friday June 24th we gathered to celebrate Cabbie’s life at Ranelli’s Soul Pit. The Magic City
Blues Society is honored to have had Cabbie in our life. We would also like to thank everybody
for all their support of Cabbie’s family. I know her father, two brothers and her niece were
moved by the outpouring of love for Cabbie. Below are pics of the event and here is a link to
more pictures.

Battle of the blues bands
BOBB – Iron City, July 24
What:
Battle of the Blues Bands
When:
Birmingham – Doors open 1pm, Competition at 2pm, July 24th, 2016
Where:
Iron City, 513 22nd St. S
Time for all Blues musicians from around the state to enter the Magic City Blues Society - Battle
of the Blues Bands. The winners will represent the Magic City Blues Society at the 31st
International Blues Challenge (IBC) in Memphis January 31-February 4, 2017 when winners
from more than 150 Blues societies from around the world will compete. The winner of the IBC
will get a lot of sponsorship opportunities and will be booked for some of the most prestigious
Blues festivals around the country. Many artists have used this competition to make the
national Blues scene. We are looking for the best Blues bands in Alabama to compete in the
2016 Battle of the Blues Bands contest. There will be two first place winners: one band and one
solo/duo act.
The winners will be booked for paying gigs at MCBS events. The first place winner of the band
competition will have their choice to headline the October Phelan Park finale or open up for
Blues Ball in December. The second place winner will play the gig that the first place winner
does not choose. The third place winner will play for the MCBS birthday party in January 2017.
The solo/duo winner will have the option to open the October Phelan Park finale or other MCBS
event.
Additionally, the MCBS will give a stipend to the winners to assist with the costs of attending
the finals in Memphis.
Here are the rules and regulation you need to know:
● Members of the band must all be residents of the state of Alabama.
● You will be given a 20-minute set and will be penalized for going over your allotted time.
You will not be penalized for playing less than 20 minutes. There will be a timekeeper
present who will give you a one-minute warning.
● You must check your equipment with the stage manager before the competition begins.
● We will supply a high quality drum kit and bass rig for you. You can change out the
snare, kick pedal and cymbals.
● The winning band is expected to compete at the IBC and with the same members who
play in our competition. Any change in band members needs to be requested in writing.
Approval is at the sole discretion of the MCBS Board.
● An individual cannot play in more than one act.
● The MCBS has the right to limit the number of entries, so do not wait to the last minute
to enter.
Below are the scoring criteria directly from The Blues Foundation’s website; we follow in their
footsteps to make our competition as close to their model as possible.
1. Blues Content: Everyone has his or her own interpretation of what is and is not Blues. Thus,
any given five-judge panel will include members with varying opinions of Blues, covering the
spectrum of Blues whenever possible, from the most traditional to soul/blues and rock/blues.
Bands should pick material carefully. At the Memphis semi-finals and finals, the judges are
Blues professionals, not a bar crowd, and are likely to be unimpressed with song selections that
are uninspired. (Call this--with all due respect to Sir Mack Rice and Wilson Pickett--the "no
Mustang Sally rule.")
2. Vocal talent: The act’s vocal skills.
3. Instrumental Talent: The act’s instrumental skills.
4. Originality: Original work is encouraged. Cover tunes are allowed but playing the recorded
rendition lick by lick is discouraged; will not be looked upon favorably by the judges; and will be
reflected in scoring.
5. Stage Presence: Over the years, the quality of talent has risen so dramatically that we no
longer consider this an “amateur” competition. Most contestants have performed on stage
enough to know that they are not simply playing music, but putting on a show. This category
rates how “sellable” a band may be.
To reflect the relative importance of each category in the success of a band, a band’s score in
each category is weighted. Raw scores for Blues Content are multiplied by four; Talent and
Vocals by three; and Originality and Stage Presence by two.
The total in each category represents the Weighted Score for that category. The total possible
weighted score is 140.
Penalty Points: A band is penalized one point from its Total Weighted Score (see below) for
each ten seconds that it runs overtime. There is no penalty for using less than the allotted time.
At the producing organization’s discretion, a policy of penalty for excessive time loading-in and
out will also be applied. Bands must have one member present and on time for the band
meeting prior to the event. Penalty points will be assessed if you are late.
SCORING SYSTEM FOR JUDGES
Here is the scoring procedure for Battle of Blue Bands and the 2016 IBC.
1. All categories and weightings are as previously stated.
2. Each judge will indicate his or her Raw Score (a whole number between 1 and 10) in each
category and turn that information over to the scorekeeper.
1-3: Typical of a beginning blues band.
4-5: Typical of a local weekend band.
6-7: Typical of an advanced local band but not yet ready to headline a major blues club.
8-9: Typical of the quality of blues artists who headline major clubs.
10: Typical of those who play the main stage at major festivals such as Chicago or
Arkansas Blues and Heritage.
3. The scorekeeper will multiply the Raw Score in each category by the established multiplier to
get each judge’s Weighted Score in each category for each act.
4. The Weighted Scores from each category for an act are added together to determine the
acct’s Total Weighted Score for each judge.
5. Any penalty points will then be deducted to obtain the act’s Net Weighted Score for each
judge.
6. After all acts have been judged and each act’s Net Weighted Score for each judge calculated,
each act will then be ranked for each judge based on that judge’s order of scores, with the act
receiving the judge’s highest Net Weighted Score being given a ranking of 1, and so on for that
judge. So, in a competition with five acts, for example, each judge ends up with the acts ranked
1 – 5 based on each judge’s personal scoring habits. This results in the acts’ Final Ranking
Number for each judge.
7. Next, the scorer totals the Final Ranking Number from all judges for each act to determine
the Gross Final Ranking. That figure is averaged (divided by the total number of judges) to
Achieve the Aggregate Act Ranking. For the quarter-finals the act in each venue with the best
two-day total of Aggregate Act Ranking will advance to the semi-finals. For the semi-finals, the
act in each venue with the best Aggregate Act Ranking for the night will advance to the finals.
For the finals, the act with the best Aggregate Act Ranking will be the top finisher.
8. In the case of a tie, the scorer shall calculate the sum of all Net Weighted Scores from all
judges for the tied acts. The band with the higher sum of Net Weighted Scores wins.
The entry fee for BOBB is Solo/Duo - $25 Member, $50 Non-Member or Bands - $50 Member,
$75 Non-Member.
A full band membership costs $60, with up to 5 members and everybody will get the Blues
News via email every month. You also get a quarter page ad in the newsletter ($50 value) to
promote your band, whether it be advertising a gig or just doing a bio article to tell people who
you are. You have 12 months to use it before the offer expires.
We normally have around 12 acts competing, so it will be an all day Blues extravaganza. The
cost to see this great competition is only $10 and $7 for MCBS members when you flash your
membership card. That comes down to less than a dollar per act whether you are a member or
not.

Here is the music lineup:
1:00 to 2:00 pm Sassy Brown & Glen Butts
Dubbed “Birmingham’s Sweetheart” by her loyal fans, Lauren “Sassy” Brown has been singing
as long as she can remember. From touring as a young adult in a 12 member a cappella
ensemble alongside Ruben Studdard, to stages in Los Angeles and Nashville, Lauren has always
had a passion for music and giving her fans an enjoyable music experience. One of the
definitions of Sassy is lively and high-spirited, which certainly describes the foot tapping,
danceable beat of her music. Accompanying Sassy and the other half of the duo is Birmingham
legend and guitarist Glen Butts.
2:15 to 3:00 pm Janelle Frost & Greg Tolbert
After experiencing personal tragedy, this duo has risen up like a Phoenix from the flames.
Sometimes you choose the blues, and sometimes it chooses you. Featuring Janelle Frost on lead
vocals, guitar and bass and Greg Tolbert on lead guitar and slide, the duo combines blues, rock,
gospel, and R&B for a southern blues sound that is eclectic and electrified. The duo cite
influences of Stevie Ray Vaughn, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Duane Allman, B.B. King and Buddy Guy.
Janelle’s original songs of love, loss, and luck will have you tapping your foot while wiping a
tear. Her vocals are often compared to Janis Joplin and Bonnie Raitt. On stage they shine
brighter than a full moon over the Mississippi.
3:15 to 4 pm Josh Butler and Gary Edmonds
Josh and Gary are a part of the award winning regional touring group The Elijah Butler Band.
The have their own brand of honky-tonk rocking blues and southern rock. As a duo you'll enjoy
some soulful harmonies and serious guitar pickin'.
4:15 to 5:15 pm 2 BLU & The Lucky Stiffs
Making their own brand of swampy Americana blues infused jam band music for the better part
of 17 years "The Lucky Stiffs” have been semifinalists in the International Blues Challenge five
times and finalists once. Playing night clubs, churches, juke joints and festivals all over the
southeast, these old dogs feel lucky to perform and will bring you their own genuine brand of
soul every time.
5:30 to 6:30 pm Davis Coen
The Memphis, TN area contemporary country-blues guitarist/singer-songwriter’s most recent
accomplishments have been daily airplay on XM/Sirius Satellite radio; inclusion as featured
artist twice on Dan Aykroyd’s ‘House Of Blues Radio Hour’; and NPR’s ‘Morning Edition’ and
‘World Cafe’ programs. Also his music is credited on the DVD release of Martin Scorsese’s PBS
special ‘The Blues’; the truTV reality TV show ‘Lizard Lick Towing’; independent films ‘Fresh Cut
Grass’ (2004) and ‘Mental Scars’ (2009); and on the DVD documentary about the music of the
Hill Country Mississippi blues matriarch Jesse Mae Hemphill, titled ‘Dare You To Do It Again’.
Coen has been touring the U.S. since his teens, either as a solo guitar and vocal act, or
commonly accompanied by bass and drums configuration. He most commonly appears at clubs,
bars, and festivals throughout the southeast and mid-south; of recent note, twice billing at the
historic King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, Arkansas. He has also enjoyed a dozen tours of
Europe, promoting nine album releases. He has shared a bill or opened for many of the classic
blues artists who influenced his music including James Cotton, Junior Wells, Chuck Berry, Bo
Diddley, Koko Taylor, Big Jack Johnson, T-Model Ford, and David “Honeyboy” Edwards. He has
also shared bills with such non-blues performers as Richie Havens, Mountain, Eric Burdon, Tito
Puente, and Toots & The Maytals.
See you at the party!! Oh and stop by the MCBS table to renew your
membership and to purchase one of our new T’s.

“Ain’t no party like a Red
Wolf Party”
As Jamey said earlier in this
newsletter, if you have
never been to the Red
Wolf you are missing
something special. Aside
possibly from our Blues
Stages events you will
never be more a part of
the music than at the Red
Wolf.
"Piper has the kind of voice
that lulls men to their
doom. It's soft and sweet
when it wants to be,
scared and vulnerable a
moment later, then ripping
through you like a razor...
Piper commands songs
utterly."
Jeremy Loome,
The Edmondton Sun,
Canada
One listen will tell you why
in her homeland Anni Piper
is known as the First Lady
of Blues. Not only is she a
sultry vocalist, but an
insightful composer,
accomplished bass player
and show stopping
performer. Born and raised
in Australia, her passion for
blues was ignited by the
sound of Stevie Ray
Vaughan. Piper has called
Cocoa Beach FL home
since 2014.
'More Guitars Than
Friends’ (Sugar Daddy
Records) is the latest
release for Piper and the
first on her own label.
Already an internationally
acclaimed recording artist,
her latest achievement is
becoming a 2015 finalist in
the UK Songwriting
Contest.
Picking up a bass guitar at
age 14, Piper completed a
Bachelor of Contemporary
Music degree at 19 years
of age. Finding it difficult
to resume her performing
career following the birth
of her son, Piper recorded
her debut album 'Jailbait'
in 2004. The all original
album was meant to be a
good quality demo and
wasn’t intended for
commercial release.
To Piper's surprise, she
was immediately signed to
Black Market Music,
Australia’s most
prestigious blues label and
began touring throughout
the country. The 'Jailbait'
album won multiple
awards including Best New
Talent at the Australian
Blues Music Awards, the
ABC Radio National 'Fresh
Air' contest, and 2nd place
at the Australian National
Songwriting Contest.
Her subsequent releases
saw her placed as a finalist
in the Australian Blues
Music Awards (Best
Female Vocal), Australian
Performing Rights
Association Professional
Development Awards and
MusicOz awards. Piper has
earned a reputation as a
songwriter of distinction,
her work having a blues
sensibility while still
addressing the issues of
today.
In 2008 Piper signed with
Blues Leaf Records USA
(Janiva Magness, Albert
Castiglia) and released
'Two's Company', a
compilation of her earlier
releases. The album
reached # 21 on the Living
Blues chart even though
Piper had yet to tour the
USA. She quickly made up
for lost time and has
performed in 35 American
states and Canada. Piper
has performed to packed
houses at premier venues
such as the House of Blues
and BB King's. She has
earned critical acclaim
from publications including
Blues Revue and Blues
Matters (UK).
Interview
LADY D
Interview, by Mike
Stephenson, of this
soulful blues singer took
place in Atlanta, Georgia
in June 2015. Many
thanks go to Roger
Stephenson for all of his
help.
My original name is
Dolleen Edmondson,
maiden name Cook, from
a family of fifteen. I have
fourteen siblings, same
mum, same dad, and
unfortunately my dad just
passed about a month ago
and my parents were
married sixty seven years.
I was born in Lake,
Mississippi, which is right
in the middle of Jackson
and Meridian, and my
parents still live there in
the same spot to this day. I
didn’t grow up in
Mississippi although I was
born there. I only stayed
there a while and then we
moved to Gary, Indiana
and stayed there and grew
up there, and worked in
Chicago, and then I moved
to San Jose, California.
Chicago is right next door
to Gary and I was living in
Indiana and I worked in
Chicago for six years. We
moved to Gary in 1968
and I left in 1985. I started
work in Chicago in 1980
and then I left the whole
entire mid west and I went
to California, but
unfortunately there is no
gold there now. I wasn’t
into music when I was in
Chicago and Gary, I never
dreamed of being a singer;
I’d never been to any
talent shows, no school
activities with music,
absolutely nothing. I
wanted to be in business. I
went to college for
business I loved business
and I never even thought
about music, never. It was
one of those late bloomer
type of things. I used to
date a blues singer when I
was in California and he
still sings to this day and
his name is Jackie Payne.
When I met him, he was
the male lead vocalist for
the Johnny Otis band. I
don’t really keep up with
him anymore, though we
chat every blue moon on
Facebook. I know he had
some recent health
problems but he has got
through that, thank God. I
have always liked blues
and during that period of
time most of my friends
were musicians, so
everybody I socialized with
were musicians. Jackie
Payne was the first person
ever to put music in my
mind, and he told me that
I had a voice and that I
should learn ‘Damn Your
Eyes’. I wasn’t so sure but
he told me that I had the
voice for that. So I
practised it and because
we had so many other
musician friends I decided
to get up and sing it on
one of their shows and I
did a good job of it and
made it through it, and the
second time I sang it I got
a standing ovation. This
guy when I got off stage
told my friend whose
show it was, said I was so
good and I was stunned. I
then didn’t sing anymore
for a while and this was in
the late eighties. I just
enjoyed being a part of
the music scene at that
time. I grew up listening to
blues with my parents so
blues was already in me.
So that’s how my singing
career started, by Jackie
Payne putting it in my
head. Then I moved to
Atlanta in 1993 and I think
I probably sang on the
stage here in Atlanta,
about 2002, at karaoke.
You see I never thought I
would be a singer in the
first place but then I had a
brother who was in town
and we went out and met
a karaoke host named
Gary Wilson and his show
was called ‘Sweet Water
Karaoke’ and my brother
asked me to get up and
sing. Me and my brother
used to play at home on
the mic and he told me
that I could do it so that’s
what I did, and the
audience were great but I
was scared. We then went
out the next night, as the
karaoke host told us
where he would be the
next night, so my brother
was in town for a week so
we went out again and the
host asked me to sing
again, which I did and I got
a standing ovation and the
folks were trying to give
me money and I didn’t
even know that you got
money from karaoke. I
was stunned and people
were calling me to their
tables and stuff and I was
totally unfamiliar with that
type of stuff. Anyway I
ended up getting $20 from
that one song and that’s
how it started for me in
Atlanta.
Then I started going
regularly to this club called
Morris Restaurant And
Lounge and I stared going
there weekly and people
would call the club to
make sure I was
performing and I wasn’t
called Lady D then, I was
plain Dolleen. So I started
wearing a cowboy hat on
stage and then the club
owner would call me at
home and have me come
to the club because folks
were asking for me at the
club so he would call me
and I would get there real
quick. I was so happy that
he was calling me as I
thought that they must
like me and that I was
good at something and
money cannot buy that
type of thing, and the
enjoyment of knowing
people like you. I didn’t
worry if I got paid or not at
that time. I used to turn
bands down as I wasn’t
ready to sing in front of a
band, as my talent wasn’t
honed back then. My older
sister Caroline told me I
was very good at singing
and that I needed to move
from standing in that one
spot on stage. So then I
started getting into that,
which was nerve racking. I
did the karaoke thing for
about two years and then I
decided to start singing
with a band and the first
band I ever sang with in
Atlanta was the JRBs (Just
Rhythm & Blues Band) and
they were smoking, they
were hot. The band I
actually ended up singing
with for the last seven
years is the Set It Off Band.
We didn’t have a name
when we started off, we
just put that name
together as the band came
together over a period of
time. Darrell the bass
player named the band
and I love that name up to
this day. We don’t work
exclusively together
anymore but I did cut my
last single with that band
and the song is called
‘Cougar Woman’. So I
stared working with the
Set It Off Band locally
around Atlanta and we
went to the Carolinas and
different places. Now
some of the places don’t
want a band, they only
want me as the singer as
that’s all they can afford.
For instance in Milwaukee
I had a fan base there that
I didn’t know about and
someone gave my CD to
the d.j. and he played it. I
have a girl friend who lives
in Milwaukee and she is a
d.j. at a club called House
Of The Blues and she used
to play my music a lot, so
that’s how I got that fan
base. They called me and
wanted me to come do a
gig and it was a sold out
thing. So I’ve opened up
for Gary Wright in
Birmingham and Bobbye
‘Doll’ Johnson, who passed
away in 2014, she and I
used to do gigs together
and she and I opened for
Clarence Carter. I’ve
opened up for Denise
LaSalle, I’ve been on
shows with O.B. Buchana
and Marvin Sease on those
big, outdoor, summer
festivals.I have done some
recordings but I do not
have a full original CD, but
I have recorded three CD
singles. Two of them were
written by Dee Robinson,
one of them was called
‘Can’t Miss What I Never
Had’ and I put that on my
site which has received
many listens, and it made
it to the top twenty
listens, which shocked the
living hell out of me as I
didn’t even know I was in
a contest. Then it got to
the top ten and made it to
seven, so I was very
impressed with that. I won
a blues award for best new
single here in Atlanta from
a couple of radio stations
where they had a
competition going and
people had to call in and I
won. I’ve done a few live
radio interviews. I’ve been
to Memphis and sung
there and I’ve sung at B.B.
King’s club there with the
band that was there. I go
in and do guest spots. I’m
going to Nashville soon to
check that scene out.
Another of my recordings
is called ‘Sounds Like The
Blues’ which was also
written by Dee Robinson
and I mentioned the
‘Cougar Woman’ single.
Currently music is the only
job I have. I used to have
my own trucking business.
In 2008 my husband
became ill with
Alzheimer’s at an early
age, which seems
hereditary as his mom had
it also. So I have been his
care giver as I couldn’t
afford to go get a job as I
would be working just to
pay a careworker for him.
We have been together
twenty three years and I
miss him so much. I’ve
been so busy with
personal situations
recently that I have not
had time to focus on music
the last couple of months my husband, going back
and forth to Mississippi for
my father, and my mother
has just got out of the
hospital last week.
I’m a member of the
Atlanta Blues Society. I
was with Fat Mack and he
wants me to get back with
them and I will soon. I play
with a couple of bands like
the After Five Band and I
still perform sometimes
with Set It Off Band. I also
sing with the House
Rocker band.
I’ve done a Mississippi In
The Park thing at Chastain
Park in Atlanta with a band
this year. That’s an annual
event here in Atlanta. In
fact Bobbye ‘Doll’ Johnson
had the gig for 2014 and
she passed in May and the
gig was in June so I and
her band kept that gig
going in honour of her and
she was going to do a
couple of numbers with
Chick Willis, who was a
friend of hers and mine, so
we honoured her and
Chick who also passed.
I am attracted to male
songs and I love Z.Z. Hill
and Bobby Bland and I’d
love to do a tribute album
to all those who have
influenced my life and
music such as Johnnie
Taylor and Tyrone Davis,
B.B. King. I sing his ‘Paying
The Cost To Be The Boss’
and everybody loves it
when I do that number.
I’m working on that album
now.
