It will be a unique sight for visitors this Easter time. It has been a fantastic few weeks representing the Sandgate area as your MP. I am humbled by the friendliness of the local community. As Easter school holidays approach, I wish everyone a safe and relaxing break. I encourage you to attend the upcoming Bluewater Festival including the Bluewater Art Trail & Exhibition, showcasing impressive local talent. With the centenary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli, record numbers of people are expected to attend services to pay their respects and honour those who have served. Work has been done to ensure our remembrance sites at Memorial Park Sandgate is looking its best for this year’s services: the Cenotaph was cleaned, plus the ornate fencing and the base of the monument has been repainted and the chain re-galvanised. Also, the footpath surrounding the perimeter of Sandgate’s Memorial Park has been re-built with my funding allocation of $80,000 from the Deagon Ward Footpath and Parks Fund. It will be an honour to again join other local residents at ANZAC Day services across our community. Cr Amanda Cooper Planning for the annual Backyard Bonanza (aka BYB15) on Sunday 24th May, which will be held in McPherson Park, is well underway. BYB15 promises to be another great celebration for the community. This event, firmly rooted in our local community, presents an ideal opportunity for clubs, community groups and other organisations within the Bracken Ridge Ward to get involved, whether through fundraising or promotional 4 April 2015 I have enjoyed meeting with schools at their investiture ceremonies, presenting leadership badges and meeting students. It was great to see hardworking students taking an interest in leadership positions across the electorate. This year, as we mark the Anzac Centenary, I look forward to attending school and local ceremonies. I visited the Sandgate PCYC to meet with organisers and saw great work being done to provide a supportive environment for people to participate in many activities. The community garden has grown and is testament to the hard work of those involved. activities, staging displays to increase awareness and membership, or a performance group to entertain the crowds. The next community planning meeting is on Wednesday 22nd April at 5pm in the Bracken Ridge Library meeting room. Please let my office know if you are interested in attending or if you would like more information. The Bracken Ridge Hall has recently had an upgrade, which involved work to the toilet facilities, entry and exit access, installation of audio-visual equipment, a new bin enclosure, relocating the drinking fountain, and a new disability car park. This event more than others, is etched in our history and psyche. Such a poignant milestone should see many turn out for what is always an emotional and moving commemoration to those who lost their lives and loved ones 100 years ago. Each year the services are patronised by swelling numbers and this anniversary year should prove to be a significant event. This centenary year Dawn Service will commence at 6am at the Sandgate Memorial – the time of day to coincide with the landing at Gallipoli. Past service, active service and cadet men and women will march at 5.30am from the corner of Flinders Parade and 3rd Avenue, to the arrive for the Dawn Service. A second morning service will begin at 9am, with the fall in to start at 8.45am at the Police Station on Brighton Roan, marching towards Memorial Park. This year a big screen TV will be mounted at the 6 April 2015 Town Hall to cope with the highly anticipated large crowds. A third afternoon service will be held at 4.30pm at RAAF Park, on the corner of 19th Avenue and Flinders Parade, with the 212 Squadron AAFC cadets setting up limited seating prior to the service. This event by the sea and outside Eventide, gives many people who are unable to attend the dawn or morning services the opportunity to attend a remarkable and moving ceremony. Eventide was used by the RAAF between 1941 and 1947 as a base for ground operations and to process returned Vets, including prisoners of war. It also served as training ground for the WAAAF and is a much ingrained and loved landmark in our local history. There were also a number of crashes of USAF aircraft in the bay, and in 1942 a ‘Flying Fortress’ had to make an emergency landing in the bay adjacent to where the ceremony is going to be conducted. The WW2 RAAF sign in the park is a place worth visiting. Bring a chair on the day and be a part of history. LEST WE FORGET •• sandgate guide 7 Photo: Paul Neil Community Organic lovers unite Emma Harley S andgate foodies are embracing the clean, green scene at Satori Organics’ recently launched venture, Satori Boutique Farmers Market. Unfolding weekly at Seymour Street, the market boasts a range of spray-free produce and treats from passionate local farmers, craftspeople and bakers, with more surprise suppliers and stalls from April. The owner of Satori Organics and founder of the market, Lindy Goodall, says the idea for the regular Sunday event came after conversations with community members. “We listened to what people were saying and they were asking us for fresh, organic, spray-free fruit and vegetables that didn’t cost an arm and a leg, were easy to collect and close to home,” Lindy says. “We wanted to share the produce that we use in-store with our friends and community.” Lindy says people are realising the benefits of buying chemical-free produce, but often the cost 8 April 2015 can make buying certified organic out of reach. “The great benefit is that the produce is grown locally in the Woodford and Wamuran regions naturally without pesticides - and the cost is much less than certified-organic,” she says. “Our supplier Kelly has personal relationships with a dozen local farmers and deals directly to get the produce straight from their door to ours.” So what can customers expect on a visit to Sandgate’s newest market? “We have some really special picks including handmade sourdough bread, local boutique flowers, the Sunday paper, handmade chutneys made from grandma’s secret recipe and even handmade sauerkraut,” Lindy says. “Every market day, the Seymour strip is buzzing. It’s created a lovely hub for locals - familiar faces visiting week to week to fill their baskets with the freshest, chemical-free fruit and veg. “You can get in and out, have a coffee or a coldpressed juice and then get on with your day. It’s a lovely way to start your Sunday.” •• Satori Boutique Farmers Market Every Sunday 8am-noon Seymour Street, Sandgate Take Control of your Future Sarah Cleeland Family Lawyers are experienced Family and Criminal Lawyers located in Sandgate, offering clients advice and representation in all areas of Family Law, Domestic Violence, Child Protection and Relationship Law. of legal experience in Family Law litigation advocacy and Mediation with Lawyers that bring services, community services, domestic violence and child protection. exclusively in the area of Family Law for over 18 years and is committed to conducting a legal practice that has a resolution based approach to Family Law litigation in a practical way that is cost and time effective for clients. • Divorce • Parenting Disputes • Property Settlement • Child Protection • Consent Orders • Defacto Separations • Domestic Violence • Criminal Offences for criminal law and family law every Friday from 9am - 12 noon Ph: 3269 9938 www.scfamilylawyers.com.au PREFERRED SUPPLIERS FOR CRIMINAL AND FAMILY LAW Photo: Paul Neil Community CREATING CONVERSATION Susannah Holmes “ It’s refreshing,” said one ‘Sandgate Long Table Dinner’ attendee, “to come to a community event with no agenda except the value of human contact and human conversation”. The first ‘Long Table’ in February attracted fortysix people to SANDBAG’s Sandgate Community Centre. Conversations developed in small groups around broad topics such as locally-produced electricity, Sandgate as a creative community, and the high price of retail rentals in our central business district. The response from that first event was so encouraging that organisers have decided to make it a regular event, and recently hosted a dinner party near Sandgate’s foreshore, with another planned for April. The Long Table is offered on the tenth day of every month (no matter which day of the week), as a free, friendly and accessible way for local people to meet and discuss things important to them. There is no ‘agenda’, and every thirty minutes a bell rings to suggest that diners move from their current position to another conversation. There’s no limitation on topics for sharing and discussing. The idea is to inspire ‘conversations with a purpose’, however that is interpreted. The Long Table concept evolved from the ‘OUR20’, a local day-long event in 2014 that 10 April 2015 ‘shadowed’ the G20 conference. At OUR20, participants engaged in a facilitated process of discussion around three ‘big ticket’ subjects, reduced to human scale and local relevance. Feedback was very positive, and organisers agreed to help start the Long Table as a followthrough. One of the organisers, Ludmila Doneman said, “Nobody owns the Long Table, and our goal as an organising group is to inspire self-organisation so that the event is truly the community’s property. It’s possible that conversations will inspire action, it’s possible that the event will just build social capital and connectivity, and it’s possible that something will emerge that nobody could have predicted any of those scenarios make it a worthwhile thing to do.” •• To attend a Long Table event, RSVP via Facebook or by email to ludmila@ edgeware.com.au. On the night, bring a plate of food to share and something to drink. The last two events were mouthwatering feasts! I always try to prepare garden soils a week before planting by adding homemade compost and/or a quality soil improver and lightly rake them into the topsoil. I then cover the soil with a high quality ‘non-matting’ mulch - bamboo mulch is a long lasting non-matting product which is also high in silica. Silica improves When transplanting, I carefully hold the stem of the seedling, pinch and then push out the seedling from the bottom of the punnet. For best results, I plant seedlings up to their first true leaves or as deep as possible. o far our best seller in the Garden Gate Nursery has been seedlings in punnets. So here are a few points to help make sure your seedlings get the best start they can: It’s always best to transplant your seedlings in the cool of the afternoon or evening, which will reduce stress. Also remove and discard any double shoots from the punnet cells. Once in, it’s good to lightly press down the soil around the seedling so that the soil is firm and generously apply mulch in a doughnut shape around the seedling. It is important to take care to ensure mulch does not touch the seedling stem. Mulch that’s piled up against a plant stem or tree trunk provides cover and traps moisture, inviting pests, disease and rot. I then water my seedlings well with a homemade compost tea and/or a liquid nutrient like kelp or fish, and consistently water morning and night until my new seedlings are well established. On a personal note, thanks so much for your warm welcome to this great corner of the world. It is a privilege to work with the Sandgate gardening community, both through the Garden Gate Nursery and the Your Farm Community Gardening Group. I am looking forward to watching this great area blossom with home and community grown goodness. 12 April 2015 For further gardening advice and quality gardening products, you can find Barry at the Garden Gate Nursery, 153 Rainbow Street, Sandgate from Thursday to Sunday. •• sandgate guide 13 Outwith ‘n’Photographer About Pics of people and life These pics and more on my blog at www.paul-neil-photography.com and follow us on facebook Chris Fisher Batchelor (front) and Garden mate! My mother was a piano teacher and played piano for the church. This founded my passion and love for music, although I was put off singing because it seemed everyone was very good in my family.” It is safe to say that the family’s talent for music was passed on. As a child, Danny learnt to sing formally with the church choir, and is self-taught in the instruments he plays - an extension of the time spent watching his accomplished sister and brother, friends and cousins perform. “I remember waking up to our living room full of band gear, after some rehearsal my dad had with a rock n’ roll/country band... As a kid it was like heaven to me then.” Danny’s smooth and soulful style proves to be very popular in many cafes, bars and festivals. “Most of the songs I choose to play have a common thread of love. This wasn’t deliberate. It just happened to be. Firstly because I initially loved the sound, and then the lyrics that accompanied that sound just confirmed it for me.” The ‘Danny Mose Trio’ will be performing at the Bluewater Festival’s ‘Bayfire Night’. Their music is a blend of soul and jazz arrangements with a hint of funk, “Which I love! I always put my own spin on covers I do. I like to do my own thing and give covers my version, hoping I’m still paying respect to the artists that own it”, says Danny. “Performing gives balance to what I’ve always known. To express is to be free, and gives me motivation to be on stage and state things I love.” Catch this man with a heart of soul. You’ll be happier for it. Entries to the event are still open and organisers are urging sailing enthusiasts to get involved. Race Director Nigel Statham said, “we have introduced some exciting new features into the race for 2015 aimed at allowing the occasional racer and serious cruiser to tick the race off their bucket list and join the cream of the offshore racing fleet on the start line.” For the first time in the Brisbane to Gladstone, a Short Handed category is being offered. This pioneering step has been welcomed by a number of potential entrants and will make an interesting extra dimension to the fleet. Alive, last year’s winner of the Courier Mail Cup BRISBANE TO GLADSTONE YACHT RACE 2015 A ustralia’s historical ocean race, the QantasLink Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race will set sail for the 67th time on Good Friday. An icon of Queensland, the offshore race is the biggest sporting event in Queensland to be staged annually over the Easter Weekend. A fleet of between thirty to fifty yachts from across Australia will converge at the Shorncliffe shoreline where His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC, Governor of Queensland will officially start the race at 11am on 3rd April. 24 April 2015 In another first, a new look Cruising and Classic Category has been introduced. Rather than the traditional format of a predicted log as used in most events across the country, the Queensland Cruising Yacht Club is pushing the innovation boundaries with a Time-on-Time modified handicap system that allows yachts to sail all the way or use their motor in a tactical battle for corrected time honours. Entries to date are showing that these, and the other innovations implemented into the Race for 2015 are having a great effect. Alive is currently making her way north from Hobart to defend her 2014 title and also have a tilt at beating local fleet leader Black Jack across the line. The Short Handed category has attracted a number of entries included Samurai Jack and Dream Lover whilst the new Cruising rules are seeing a new breed of skipper put their name down to line up on the start line. Spectators will be able to view the start from on the water or at one of the two festivals that have grown up around the historic race; the Bluewater Festival in Shorncliffe and the Redcliffe Sails Festival. In Gladstone, to celebrate and rub shoulders with the crews and view the boats, head to Gladstone’s Yacht Club where the two Clubs will set up the Race Information Centre base for the duration of the race and will play host to the official after party on Sunday 5th April, weather depending. •• ANTI-AGING COSMETIC SPECIALIST Anita has performed in excess of 12,000 nonsurgical cosmetic facial enhancements for loyal clients throughout Australia. Looking over the last few quarters, we haven’t experienced the usual hot season, let alone autumn or winter! Our local property market is very lean with fewer homes listed for sale, so what are we to expect? Aaron Widt, recent incoming President of the Hawks, would like to invite the wider community, to witness the clubs One Club Launch, being held at the Lemke Rd Club in Taigum, on Saturday 28th March. “This day is a celebration of all things that are great about Sandgate,” said Mr Widt. “We have a strong history in the area, and have seen some great past players go on to represent Brisbane and Queensland on a national level. That type of quality player comes from a supportive and nurturing group behind them, and the Hawks epitomizes everything that 42 April 2015 is good about success and determination.” “The One Club Launch will see all levels of players being presented with their jumpers for the upcoming season, and will vary in age from 6 to 60. It’s also an opportunity to thank the volunteers that we’ve had helping keep this club strong over the decades.” “The Launch will have kids activities and live music on the day, as well as entertainment and markets for all ages. The ‘Year for Peace’ initiative encourages all of us to play a role in striving for peace. Their aim is to engage and explore with others the behaviour, values, prejudices and attitudes that we hold within ourselves and as a community. Founders, Janine Quine and Peter Wertheim, started the local grassroots organisation, and meet on the first Tuesday of every month at the Sandgate Community Centre with around fifteen to thirty people attending. Janine says, “We believe that unless we citizens accept our responsibilities to try and understand what gives rise to wars - in ourselves and in the history of our country - we will continue to have more devastating international wars plus 46 April 2015 increasing civil unrest here in Australia. There are many positive things happening in communities locally and around the world that can help us move towards a more peaceful world.” The group has secured some of the old timber from the Shorncliffe Pier. “We are planning to build peace poles in collaboration with other organisations and to plant them as a reminder that we as a community do much to create a community where peace can prevail. Given all the strife in the world, any move towards establishing true peace is crucial.” ‘Pieces for Peace’ performers include singer and poet ‘Sheish Money’, jazz vocalist Ella Doneman, folk singer/songwriter Glen Major, Triple A Academy musicians, seasoned rapper Lewis Corkhill and published poet Anita Reed. Donna Archer’s ‘Rebel Creative’ art students will paint throughout the afternoon, and auction those artworks prior to the close of the event. •• Pieces for Peace Saturday 18th April 1.30pm – 5pm Sandgate Community Centre 153 Rainbow Street, Sandgate www.yearforpeace.com 3261 8715 or 0432 607751 Entry is by donation, with affordable tea, coffee and snacks available. LETTERS OF 1915 Susannah Holmes “ We are sleeping out in the open with absolutely no covering but the canopy of heaven and it is a very nice covering too, but hardly bomb proof” - by Samuel John Drew of Shorncliffe, written in France, 1918. Director Belynda Buck, together with an ensemble of local actors and musicians, are soon presenting ‘Letters of 1915’. Belynda describes the performance as, “A theatrical presentation of the thoughts and words of young men and women taken directly from their WWI diaries and letters. “World War One was documented like no other. You won’t find this amount of documentation for other wars in this detail. People can be connected to the centenary of Anzac through these words, so we share their thoughts through the diaries and letters that they, and their families have so diligently kept.” ‘Letters of 1915’ is Belynda’s third outdoor local theatre production in as many years. Her first production of ‘The Pan Adventure’, based on JM Barrie’s ‘Peter Pan’, was shown at Dowse Lagoon. ‘The Snow Queen’ was attended by hundreds in the Shorncliffe State School playground last year. These free local productions are but a few in a rich history of Belynda’s creativity, 48 April 2015 including her work as revival choreographer for Baz Luhrmann’s production of the opera, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, for Opera Australia - a version of which Belynda hopes to bring to a Sandgate park next year. Belynda has always been drawn to ‘site specific’ projects. “I find so much inspiration in unconventional theatre spaces (tiny bars, art galleries, parks), and while there is a great sense of pride seeing your work in grand theatres, nothing compares to working with the lush set designs and ambiance created by Mother Nature.” ‘Letters of 1915’ will be set in Sandgate Memorial Park, in the heart of Sandgate’s central business district, with its dominant cenotaph, originally erected to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action in WWI. •• Letters of 1915: Sunday 26 April Sandgate Memorial Park, Seymour Street & Brighton Road, Sandgate Limited seating provided, please bring a chair or picnic blanket For further information email [email protected], and follow www.facebook.com/lettersof1915 k, ay! ! c i qu tod sold e B ect 0% p 7 ins ost m Al It’s time for the retirement you deserve! emergency call, support services available and co-located residential care should you need it; there’s no reason why you can’t have peace of mind. Chindamo’s magic touch has earned him billing as one of the world’s best jazz pianists, a musical polyglot in the tradition of Bernstein and Pervin - where his art transcends jazz composing concerts along with chamber and film music. To his credit there are gigs as studio pianist for film sound tracks, more than 60 in fact, including Pharlap, the iconic Man from Snowy River II, The Sound of One Hand Clapping and Warlock. The Japanese also love his work, catapulting numerous recordings to Number One on their Modern Jazz charts. And he has kept good company, gracing the stage with the likes of Shirley Bassey, Ricky Lee Jones, Olivia Newton John, Dame Kiri Ti Kanawa, US drummer Billy Cobham, James Morrison and Ray Brown. Add the Mo’s, Bell’s and an APRA Award to a very large swag of recordings, and you have 50 April 2015 the ingredients that make Chindamo’s art of seduction no small room act. Joe is joined on stage at 7.30pm by double bassist Brenden Clark and drummer Andrew Gander. “Joe Chindamo is closer to the model of the complete musician of Bach’s time - composer, performer, improviser - than classical music’s modern custodians. Chindamo’s range of reference is encyclopedic and his art tender; his virtuosity never hectors, but disarms. It is music of seduction.” Anna Goldsworthy - Pianist - Author. “Joe Chindamo is the most prodigiously talented jazz pianist of his generation.” David James - The Age. “Throughout, his approach is one of unpretentious elegance, under-scored by superlative technique.” Jack Bowers - Cadence Magazine, New York. Chasing Squid is an activity for the whole family to get involved with and you generally don’t need to upgrade your gear to get them. We use either spin reels or even an Alvey reel on a reasonably light rod and light line (typically a good Bream rod and reel is all you need). We have seen people using a Hand line off the jetty to catch them! The best time to hunt squid is at night, so you should make sure you rug up a bit. Some nights are bitterly cold out there when you have a light breeze blowing. Squid Jigs are most commonly used to get a feed, and they can cost as little as $5. Some of the more top shelf jigs sell for $40. We generally start with the cheaper model and as the season progresses and the larger squid come through, we step up to a $12-$14 jig. There is a Squid Club that meets in late April. If you would like to learn how to catch squid, just let us know and we can give you the details or look up on Facebook for “Moreton Bay Squid Club”. Although Snapper are in Moreton Bay all year round we will start to see better numbers and sizes move in to the shallows reef areas around Scarborough. You generally don’t need to travel far to find them but before you get geared up to chase them, take a minute or two and check your gear. Tackling sandgate Mark Templeton A lot of people will drag their gear out from last season to find rods damaged and reels in need of a service. If you find yourself in this boat drop your gear into us for a service. If you would like more Fishing Tips or you would like us to cover particular topics, visit www.tackleland.com.au and drop us a line. Enjoy your time with the family and “Maintain the Passion”.
