Newsletter Elementary - Rockwood School District
A Message from the Principal April. 2010 Newsletter Dear Kellison Families, It is hard to believe I am typing up the April issue of our newsletter… this year has flown by! We have 2 more months together and it will “take teamwork” to be sure that each and every day is productive and that all of our events are supported. When spring time comes, everyone tends to shift to the “downhill from here” mentality but we still have lots to accomplish in order to have a successful conclusion to the school year. I want to take this issue to stress an important shift in our communication between home and school. Effective next year, our first line of communication will be our website. The district has conducted numerous workshops to help each school get the new websites up and running. We have already begun to try our best to put more information in our calendar, in the Announcement column, and the Upcoming events column. The expectation and hope is that the website is THE source that parents use to seek information rather than a school newsletter. Basically it was discussed in the trainings that all section of the newsletter can (or will be) found on the website. Both sources are somewhat of an overload (we send it now electronically) and we need to “train” our parents that going to the website is THE place to go. A handful of schools have already stopped sending monthly newsletter and just enter the information that would be going into it on their website. I plan to still do a “back to school” newsletter filled with all the important start of the year items as well as on-going year long items. I encourage you to begin this “shift” and bookmark the following website into your favorites so you can go check it out regularly. http://www.rockwood.k12.mo.us/kellison/Pages/default.aspx The election is here… TUESDAY, APRIL 6TH and PROP 5 IS ON THE BALLOT! Thanks to all our parent leaders for your help in contacting parents. All of the information including the Kellison project list is on the district web site. Please be sure to vote! As we do each year, the staff works collaboratively each spring to begin creating new class lists for the next school year. I invite you to think about the needs of your child/ren and the learning environment that best supports his/her style. Included in this issue (as an attachment) is the form (optional of course) that I will accept for parental input. Please complete the form and return it to school by Friday, April 23. Your information is one of numerous factors that are taken into consideration in the development of class placement. Please do NOT request a specific teacher by name. Teacher assignments will be shared in the summer via a newsletter as in year’s past (mailed out mid to end of July). I end with a reminder to one of my favorite events of the year… our VOLUNTEER APPRECIACTION BREAKFAST. Invitations will be coming home soon to honor and recognize our awesome parents for ALL their time and hard work to help make Kellison successful. The event is on Friday, April 23rd at 9:00 am. Looking forward to our next 2 busy months together! Happy Spring! In 2005, after reading the book, Mountain Gorillas in Danger by Rita Ritchie, the students wanted to do something to help mountain gorillas who are in danger of becoming extinct. The students sold multi-color bracelets and raised money to adopt a mother and her baby. This is made possible through the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. The money provides care and medical treatment, if needed, for gorillas in the wild. Once again our students would like to help keep this species alive. The students will be selling the bracelets again for this special cause This year we would love to donate our money in memory of our 5th grader, Jessie Kuebler. Jessie was looking forward to this special event and we thought it would be fitting to adopt our gorilla (s) in her memory! In a couple of weeks a note will be coming home with the exact dates. Their teachers, Mrs. Emma Cradock, Mrs. Lisa Lennon, and Mrs. Marilyn Jones are very proud of these students. DISTRICT SCIENCE OLYMPICS & EXPO Congratulations to our Kellison kids for a really great job in being good sports and having fun with the Olympic Events. Students are bringing home a ribbon for their participation in events. Thank you parents, for your encouragement! We enjoyed helping our Kellison kids have fun with science! Thank you for volunteering at events, Mr. Moran, Mr. Griffin, Conor Griffin, Mrs. Fulsom and Mrs. Davis. Kellison always comes through with sending event volunteers each year. The Rockwood Science Department knows how big of a support Kellison is in the area of science curriculum. We appreciate the help on this big day for the kids! The Board of Education voted unanimously to seek voter approval for the proposition. The decision followed months of study and recommendations from the Bond Issue Committee, a 50-member group comprised of a parent representative from each school, along with community members and staff. The committee reviewed school building needs throughout the 150 square miles of the district. At the exhibit, more than 6,900 student artists will demonstrate their skills. While exploring the artwork on display, children are encouraged to get their face painted, participate in chalk painting and enjoy the fun! When is the election? Tuesday, April 6, 2010. Polls are open 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Where can I vote? Registered voters will receive postcards from the Election Office designating the polling place for the voter. In addition, you can find your polling place at www.stlouisco.com/scripts/elections. How many “Yes” votes are required for the passage of the bond issue? The Constitution of the State of Missouri requires a four-sevenths (57.14 percent) majority for passage. Where can I find Prop 5 information? Visit the Rockwood Web site or your school Web site: www.rockwood.k12.mo.us/prop5. How will Prop 5 appear on the ballot? Shall the Rockwood R-6 School District, St. Louis County, Missouri, issue its general obligation bonds in the amount of Fifty-five Million Dollars ($55,000,000) for the purpose of acquiring, constructing, renovating, repairing, improving, furnishing and equipping school sites, buildings and related facilities in the District, including (1) safety measures and infrastructure, (2) maintenance of current facilities by continuing to fund major capital repairs and improvements, (3) additions for classrooms, (4) renovations for instructional areas, and (5) technology infrastructure and classroom technology, resulting in no estimated increase in the debt service property tax levy?
