(The vain Prince walks near the pond.) Prince: I’m the best-looking Prince in the planet. I’ve got the most beautiful ears, mouth, nose and eyes nobody has ever seen. My hands, my arms and my legs are the strongest in the whole world, but most important of all, I’ve got the prettiest crown anybody has ever wished for. (The Prince plays with his crown and drops it into the pond.) Prince: (Crying like a whimsical child.) Oh! My crown! My crown! I’ve lost my crown! Uaaaaaahhh! Uaaaaaahhhhh! I want my crown back! (An Old Lady enters, collecting herbs and plants.) Old Lady: (Imitating the Prince.) Uaaaaaaaahhhh! Uaaaaaaahhh! I want my crown back! I want my crown back! Prince: (Frightened.) Who are you? Old Lady: I’m an old lady. Prince: And what are you doing? Old Lady: I’m collecting herbs to eat. And you? Why are you crying? Prince: I’m crying because… (He suddenly remembers why and cries again.) Uaaaahhhhhh! My crown! Old Lady: Stop crying! Prince: Uaaaahhhhhhh! Old Lady: Stop crying! Prince: Uaaaaahhhhhhhh!! Old Lady: Stop crying!! Prince: (He stops crying.) And my crown? Prince: Nooooo! Old Lady: On the pond? Prince: Nooooooooooo! Old Lady: Then…where is it? Prince: In the pond! Old Lady: Oh! In the pond. Prince: (Angry.) Yes! In, in, in. Old Lady: Okay, okay, okay. (The Prince starts crying again.) Old Lady: Can I get it back…? Prince: Who? You? Don’t make me laugh! Ha, ha, ha! Old Lady: (Angrily.) If I bring it back to you, will you give me something as a reward? Prince: I will give you anything you want. (The Old Lady shakes her stick and the crown will appear “flying”, otherwise, it will be the Old Lady herself who will dive into the pond and get it back.) Old Lady: Here you are. Prince: Oh! My crown! My crown! (The Prince leaps around happily.) Old Lady: Hey! Prince: My beautiful crown. Old Lady: Hey!! Prince: I’m happy, I’m happy, happy, happy… Old Lady: Hey you!!! Prince: What do you want, old lady? Old Lady: You promised me a wish. 4 The Frog Prince Prince: That’s true. Ask me whatever you want. Old Lady: I want you to give me a kiss. Prince: You only want me to give you…a kiss! Old Lady: Yes, a kiss. Prince: Kiss you? Old Lady: Yes, kiss me. Prince: How disgusting! I would never kiss you, old witch. (The Prince tries to leave but the Old Lady shakes her stick and paralyses him.) Old Lady: You made fun of me just because I’m old and ugly. Now you’ll se!. Abracadabra… see how this Prince will turn into a Frog! You will only be a Prince again when a Princess becomes your friend and kisses you. Ha! Ha! Ha! At the pond. (Low light, phosphorescent ball. The Princess plays with her ball in a juggling choreography ‘til she drops the ball into the pond.) (The Princess starts crying desperately. Suddenly the Frog appears behind the pond. He sees a fly and eats it. As the Frog speaks, he croaks every now and then.) Frog: Who is crying this way, and waking me up from my sweet dreams? (The Princess cries even more helplessly.) Frog: Hey! You! (The Frog goes over to the Princess. At this point, the Princess turns back… so they never meet. This happens repeatedly during the following dialogue.) Princess: (Snivelling.) Who is speaking? Frog: Me! Princess: But where are you? Frog: Here! Princess: I can’t see you. Frog: Here!! (Suddenly the Princess turns and sees the Frog.) Princess: Ahhhggggg! How ugly! Frog: I’m a Frog and I can get your beautiful golden ball back. Princess: What… ball…? (The Princess cries again helplessly.) Frog: Stop, stop, stop… Stop!! I said I can help you. Princess: (She stops crying.) Really? So, if you can help me, why don’t you go and get my beautiful golden ball back? 6 The Frog Prince Frog: I want something in exchange. Princess: Ask me whatever you want, it will be yours. Do you want my dresses? Frog: No, I want… Princess: My pearls and my jewels. Frog: No, what I want is… Princess: I know…you want my beautiful golden crown. Frog: Noooo! I don’t want your dresses, your pearls or your crown. Princess: Ok! So…what do you want? Frog: I want to be your friend. I want you to treat me with love. I want to eat from your little dish, drink from your little glass and sleep in your little bed. If you promise me all of this, I will go down the bottom of the pond and bring your beautiful golden ball back. Princess: Great! I promise you whatever you want. Frog: Hey! A promise is a promise. Princess: Don’t you trust me? I’m a Princess. Frog: All right. (The Frog dives into the pond and the Princess addresses the audience.) Princess: This Frog is talking nonsense. Frogs should be in the water like other animals. Frogs can’t become a Princess’s friend. (The Frog comes out of the pond with the ball and throws it into the air. The Princess catches it, jumps and shouts in happiness as she goes running to the palace. The Frog tries to follow her but he is slower and can’t keep up.) Frog: Wait, wait, I can’t follow you. Wait! (The Frog enters, counting his jumps.) Frog: Nine hundred and ninety-eight, nine hundred and ninety-nine… and one thousand. (The Frog stops and knocks on the door with all his energy.) King: (Angrily.) Who is knocking on the door so late? Frog: Princess, open the door. It’s me. (The curious Princess runs and opens the door. On seeing the Frog she closes the door quickly and goes back to the table, frightened and confused.) King: What’s the matter, my dear daughter? Why are you shaking with fear? (The Princess grimaces, trying to explain who was knocking on the door.) Princess: It’s…it’s… King: (Mocking.) Is it …a huge red dragon? Princess: No! King: Two fierce blue giants? Princess: No!! King: Three dangerous black spiders? Princess: Noooooooo!! King: You’re confusing me. I don’t understand. Princess: It’s… it’s… it’s a frog. The Frog Prince Princess: A green frog. King: Oh! A frog… and why is a green frog knocking on my door? (The Frog knocks on the door again…now with even more energy.) Frog: Princess! Princess! Princess: Well, er…er…well… King: If you made a promise, you must keep it. Go and open the door. (The Frog knocks on the door again, and the Princess opens showing her displeasure. The Frog comes into the palace looking happy and excited, jumping up and down everywhere, even jumping on the King, who chuckles. Finally, the King and the Princess sit at the table.) Frog: I also want to eat with you. (The Princess pretends she didn’t hear the Frog, but as the King fixes his eyes on her, she stands up and puts a stool next to the Frog.) Frog: Can you lift me up? (The Princess looks at the King and he nods his approval. So the Princess lifts the Frog up onto the stool.) (Whenever the Frog asks for something, the Princess complains and then the King nods his head giving orders to the Princess.) 10 The Frog Prince Frog: Will you pass me your little golden dish? I want to eat your food. (The Princess passes it to him.) Frog: Will you pass me your silver glass? I want to drink your water. (The Princess passes it over.) (The Princess ignores him, as if she hasn’t heard a word. The Frog does try to kiss the King but he dodges him.) King: My daughter, you forget the Frog. (The Princess picks the Frog up scornfully and takes him to her room.) (Set change as the Princess sings her song.) I am a princess TRACK 14 I am a princess, This is my crown. Princess: Get out of my bed immediately. Frog: But… Princess: Right now! (The frightened Frog jumps of the bed, goes back to the corner and starts to cry.)
