SNEAK PEEK
SANTA MONICA COLLEGE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
Dear Friends,
We invite you to a sneak preview of our 2016/17 Season. This brochure
features a glimpse of what you have come to expect from your theater,
world class artists, excitement, interest, a way to enrich our lives.
We are proud of our continued residency with the Los Angeles ensemble,
Calder Quartet. Their ongoing exploration of Beethoven’s influence also
brings a selection of modern composers working in LA. If you have not
heard them yet, this is a must. Beethoven, Bagels & Banter on Sunday
mornings is delighting all of us and our Curator, Robert Davidovici outdoes himself with each new concert.
Jazz takes center stage this season to feature five vibrant artists from
across the spectrum. Joey Alexander at twelve years old blew us away in
the Edye and now with a GRAMMY performance to his name, returns to
the main stage. Don’t miss the exquisite Ms. Lisa Fischer & Grand Baton.
We have plans to make The Broad Stage home for Westside Jazz lovers,
we want you to be part of this.

“Next Gen” arrives. This is a new series for us, and presents emerging
talent across genres. We will put the spotlight on writers, visual artists,
poets and thinkers to name a few. You will have experienced them all
first at The Broad Stage.
No season is complete without our beloved Nat Geo Live. Explore the
world with family and friends from the comfort of your own seat!
In a few weeks we will be announcing the return of our Celebrity Opera
Recitals, starting with the amazing Italian tenor, Vittorio Grigòlo in July.
These rich evenings have become stars in the Broad Galaxy thanks to
the generosity of the Lloyd E.Rigler–Lawrence E. Deutsch Foundation.
We have more shows in more genres on their way. You will be the first to
hear about them.
This is our theater, our community. None of this happens without your
love of the performing arts and your commitment to show up. We thank
you for joining us, for helping us to continue to grow and look forward to
spending another wonderful season together.
With many thanks,
The Broad Stage Board of Directors and staff

Notes from the Field: Doing Time in Education
MacArthur Award-winner and Broad Stage favorite Anna
Deavere Smith returns to the Westside with a compelling new
project that examines one of our country’s most pressing
issues. In Notes from the Field: Doing Time in Education,
Ms. Smith turns her attention to “the school-to-prison
pipeline” and performs striking portraits culled from interviews she conducted with more than 100 individuals across
the nation, affected by the pipeline’s devastating policies—
capturing the dynamics of a rapidly shifting social issue
through her trademark performance technique.

possible in part through a generous
grant from the Colburn Foundation.
Our very own Broad Stage Artists-in-Residence continue their rapturous, multi-year Beethoven String Quartet
cycle. This inventive and passionate quartet explores the
profound beauty of Beethoven’s String Quartets paired
with exquisite classical and contemporary works. The new
works are all commissioned for this series, inspired by
the op 59 quartets and themes of patronage in the past
and in the present, to create concerts full of beauty.

Ms. Lisa Fischer & Grand Baton
A “resolutely un-pindownable band” (The New
York Times), GRAMMY-nominated quintet Kneebody
generates explosive rock energy paralleled with
high-level chamber ensemble playing, and highly
wrought compositions balanced with adventurous
no-holds-barred improvising. All “sounds-like”
references can be set aside as the band has
created a genre and style all its own.
Star of the 2013 Oscar-winning documentary Twenty
Feet from Stardom, Lisa Fischer’s passion for music in
all its forms leads her to constant growth and experimentation with different styles. After four decades of
singing background for icons like the Rolling Stones,
Tina Turner, Chaka Khan, and Nine Inch Nails, Fischer
is finally offering her own humble, heartfelt song,
accompanied by her inventive new band Grand Baton.

Love that Dog
Based on the novel by Sharon Creech
The Edye
Jack hates poetry. Only girls write it and every time he tries
to, his brain feels empty. But his teacher, Ms. Stretchberry,
won’t stop giving her class poetry assignments—and Jack
can’t avoid them. But then something amazing happens.
The more he writes, the more he learns he does have something to say. Returning to the Edye Second Space (Manxmouse, 2014), Theatergroep Kwatta’s Love That Dog shows
how one boy finds his own voice with the help of a teacher,
a writer,a pencil, some yellow paper, and of course, a dog.
