Design and Operations
Design Features Assure Positive Disconnects
DX Connectors incorporate three hydraulic circuits:
• Secondary Unlock
• Primary Lock
The primary locking circuit is optimized to deliver
maximum locking force to the annular piston/cam ring.
• Primary Unlock
In emergency situations, the independent secondary unlock circuit functions a
passive secondary annular piston. The
secondary unlock piston unlocks the
connector with 88% more force than the
primary lock piston.
The primary unlock circuit provides 25% more unlockSecondary
ing force than locking force.

Latching Segments are Automatically Retracted
When the Connector is Unlocked
DX Connectors incorporate
a positive unlocking mechanism. This mechanism ensures
that the latch segments are
fully retracted from the wellhead when the connector is
unlocked. A spreader, attached
to the annular piston/cam
ring, spreads the latching
segments apart when unlock
pressure is applied and the
cam ring moves up. Then the
split ring retractors pull the
latch segments away from
the wellhead.

Testing and Technical Data
The DX Connector Clamp Design
Prevents Bolt Failure
BOLTS NOT IN
LOAD PATH
The DX Connector is a “clamp segment” type that
behaves as a simple hub and clamp arrangement.
As the segment latches to the wellhead, it clamps
to the DX Connector upper body simultaneously
and creates a closed loop with a near straight load
path. Any loads applied to the connector travel
only through the segment that is made from highly ductile alloy steel. The Dril-Quip DX Connector
has bolts connecting its outer body and cover
plate; however, these bolts are not in the load path.
These bolts are made from ductile API L7 alloy
material, and are treated with baked on Teflon
coating for corrosion protection. The bolts are not
zinc electroplated This simple clamp design of the
DX Connector removes the possibility of a bolt
failure causing loss of connection.

LOAD PATH
Computer-Designed
Using highly sophisticated design tools, a very
extensive 3-dimensional advanced finite element
analysis (FEA) was carried out over numerous
design iterations to optimize every minute detail
of the profile. The analysis simulates very closely
the connector installation and service conditions and includes preloading and application of
internal/external loads (pressure, bending, tension/compression, and load combinations) while
observing the stress behavior throughout the
connector components. Particular attention has
been paid to achieve uniform load distribution
and minimization of the peak surface stresses on
the interface profiles of the latch segments, wellhead, and upper body which is directly related
to the fatigue performance of the connector. This
advanced technology has allowed the company
to develop an optimized locking profile geometry. Analysis has also been conducted on the DX
gasket to observe the behavior of contact loads
and gasket’s reaction to the internal pressure and
external loads. These results have enabled the
company to create wellhead connector design with
high load capacity, all within the smallest possible
dimensions envelope.

DX-DW Connector
DX-DW Connector
Dril-Quip’s SDX-DW Subsea Connector, is pressure rated to 15,000 psi, and is a high-strength,
field-proven BOP stack wellhead connector
designed for deep water, deep wells and long
drilling times. It is easily adaptable to any existing BOP stack with minimal modifications and
is compatible with all BOP stack control systems.
The SDX-DW Connector is designed to sit on a
30"subsea wellhead mandrel. Furthermore, the
connector can accommodate the SDX H-4 locking profile.
New High Fatigue
SDX Locking Profile
Dril-Quip's SDX Connector and SDX locking
profile is a proprietary design engineered specifically for high fatigue resistance and provides
extended service life during drilling and production operations. By modifying tooth profile curvature, the connector was designed to provide
maximum fatigue performance. The high fatigue
resistance is directly attributed to a very significant reduction of stress amplification factors of
all the critical fatigue locations of the connector
and wellhead profile interface.
