The most important issue for our attention this spring is the May 7th Operating Levy for the Westlake
City Schools. We encourage you to become informed and to vote on May 7th. This issue is incredibly
important to the future of our students’ education. If you need additional information, please visit

A big THANK YOU goes to many for supporting 2013 Dollars For Scholars! It takes a tremendous amount of
teamwork to put on the Westlake Council of PTA’s Dollars For Scholars. Each year we are very proud of the
SEVERAL scholarships we are able to award. This is possible by the great support from many area businesses.
Please remember them as you are looking for services, gifts, food and more!
Many more Thanks go to our Fantastic teams! Without you our event would not happen! You are the “Stars” of
the event. Great job goes to the Staff team lead by Team Manager Ben Hodge! Put another “W” in the books for
the staff! Thank you to all the coaches who voted in making the 2013 Senior team. Truly there is some amazing
talent there! Coach Weiss as usual did an awesome job in coaching the Senior team.
To the Delegates- We cannot say enough about how awesome you all were in getting the word out! You were on
your “game” this year. Many units sold out all their tickets! This is a big portion of making our goal! Also, as we
looked around we saw so many families at Dollars this year. You really were getting the word out! We had a
record attendance! Thank you so much!
To Kim Mather and her Counters- Super job in keeping the money accounted for down to the “penny”!! To have
all the cash boxes and money collected, counted, tabulated and deposited is no small job. Your team really
rocked! Can’t wait for our numbers update!
To the FANTASTIC Concession Crew- What a well organized team. You really kept the crowd happy! Karen and
Bobbie- I will always want to be on your team! Thank you!
To all the wonderful volunteers! We are so thankful for your support! Without you we DFS would not be
possible!
To Tony – our true partner. All your extra work and ideas really made DFS so fun! Thank you!
To Megan Moutoux- just having you there helping and supporting is always going to be a great time!! Thanks for
all your help with the programs and all the little things!
Definitely a job well done! We really appreciate your great work.
And to the many whom we may have missed or asked to be anonymous your support means just as much ~ Thank
you!

Physicals will be administered at Parkside Intermediate, Lee Burneson Middle
School, and Westlake High School on the following days:
Westlake High School - Wednesday, May 1 - 7:30 AM-12:00 noon
Lee Burneson Middle School - Thursday, May 9 - 8:45 AM-11:30 AM
Parkside Intermediate School - Thursday, May 9 1:00 PM-2:30 PM
An updated (less than 1 year old) physical and accompanying paperwork is
required prior to allowing a student to participate sports teams (all physicals
done in May are good for the entire next school year). Forms can be found
in the "School Physical" tab of the Athletic Web Page, or can be picked up
from the main office at LBMS and Parkside and from the athletic office at
WHS.
Westlake Relays – Volunteers Needed
The 48th Annual Westlake Relays will be held on May 10, 2013, and for the
first time ever this event will be held on a Friday evening. The Westlake
Relays is one of the oldest relay events in the state of Ohio.
Volunteer opportunities are still available. We would need volunteers to
arrive at 4:00 PM. The relays will begin 4:30 PM and we anticipate that they
will wrap up around 9:30 PM.
The athletes who train and compete on Friday, May 10th deserve a well-run
meet to showcase their talents. Westlake City Schools, thanks to our
Westlake Kiwanis and the many dedicated volunteers make this a wonderful
experience. Without the help of our many volunteers this effort would not
be possible. Should you wish to volunteer, please contact the Westlake High
School Athletic Office by calling 440-835-6354. Thank you for helping to
make this long-standing tradition a success.

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Schedule Changes: Planning a master schedule for the next school year is a difficult task. The student and parent
are urged not to select courses with the idea that these requests can be changed. The master schedule is
developed on the basis of the courses that students select. Making a change in a selected course will have a
serious effect on class size and teaching assignments and therefore will be approved sparingly.
Therefore, no change will occur unless:
1.
2.
3.
there is a technical error in the scheduling process
it is clear that the student is academically misplaced as determined by the classroom teacher.
there is a scheduling conflict
Summer Programs: Information on summer programs is available on Naviance Family Connections in the College
Section.
College Level Examination Program (CLEP): CLEP is a credit by exam program that is accepted by more than 2,900
colleges in the United States. These exams cover material taught in courses that most students take as a
requirement in their first two years of college. Most exams are 90 minutes in length and are done on a computer
at a participating college or university. For a more comprehensive description of the CLEP examinations and their
cost, a list of locations where students can be tested, and a list of colleges granting credit for satisfactory scores on
CLEP exams visit their web site at www.collegeboard.com/clep .
INFORMATION FOR SENIORS
Local Scholarships: Please turn in your local scholarship applications to Mrs. Frazier, secretary, in the guidance
office. Deadline to submit is at noon on April 8.
College Decision: The National Candidate Reply Date is May 1. By this date seniors must inform the colleges that
have admitted them as to whether or not they will attend. Seniors are reminded that they must notify every
college where they have been accepted as to whether or not they will attend.
Naviance: Seniors are asked to update their college acceptances in Naviance.
INFORMATION FOR JUNIORS
College Planning: Now is the time to begin researching colleges. Juniors are encouraged to use Naviance Family
Connections for their college planning. All colleges encourage campus visits; many have special spring programs for
visiting high school students. In addition, many colleges offer summer academic and athletic programs. Contact the
admissions office at the school of your choice for further information. Remember; as you consider various colleges,
there is no best college. There are only “right” colleges, often several of them. Your task is to discover and choose
a college that is “right” for you. No single college will be perfect in every respect; be prepared to compromise.
ACT/SAT TESTS: Students planning to attend a four-year college or university need to take the SAT and/or ACT
exam. We recommend taking these exams in the spring of the junior year. The SAT now has three sections, Critical
Reading, Mathematics and Writing. More information on this test can be found at www.collegeboard.com. The
ACT Test has four sections, English, Reading, Mathematics and Science. The ACT also has an optional writing
section. Students taking only the ACT should take the writing section at least once. More information on the ACT
can be found on their web site at www.act.org. Both testing companies prefer online registration. The WHS Code
needed for registration is 365450.
SAT II Subject Tests: Many of the most selective colleges in the United States also require SAT II Subject Area Tests.
Students should contact the admissions office or visit their web page to determine the number of tests required.
Each SAT II Test is an hour long and three tests can be taken on a single test day.SAT/ACT PREP: The Guidance
Office has purchased an SAT/ACT Test prep program through Naviance. Students can login to their account to find
this program. Other options for test prep are listed below.
The ACT has test prep and practice tests on its web site at www.act.org.
The College Board has practice tests on its web site at www.collegeboard.com.
Students can purchase The Princeton Review for SAT/ACT on CD ROM.
Area bookstores have a number of books on this topic.
Should a student take a test prep course or not? That is often a difficult question. The best preparation for
college entrance examinations is enrolling in and excelling in a rigorous college preparatory curriculum.
However, if a student is motivated and willing to put in the time a test prep course demands, test
preparation can be helpful.

Music a la Mode is quickly approaching, and Music Boosters
members are busy gathering items for our annual raffle, held in
the cafeteria throughout the day. Many students, parents, and
grandparents who attend look forward to purchasing tickets in
hopes of winning one of the great prizes! Please consider
putting together a basket or donating an item to help raise
funds for the PreK-12 music programs in Westlake. Past
baskets have had themes such as "Movie Night" (several new
DVDs and snacks), "Tribe Fever" (Indians jersey, hat, and flag),
and "Date Night" (theater tickets and gift card to
restaurant). Don't have time to put together a gift
basket? Area gift cards and individual items are welcome,
too! If you would like to donate a basket or item or would like
more information, please contact Kathie McNeilly
([email protected]). We are also looking for
volunteers to help prepare donated items for the raffle. If you
are interested, please let Kathie know. Thank you, and we look
forward to seeing you at the 2013 Music a la Mode!
