THE LORD OF LIFE
At this bountiful time of year, our Sunday readings teem with life and
abundance. Both the first reading, from the book of Wisdom, and the Gospel
passage from Mark assure us that God did not make death or even will us to
be ill. Illness and death entered the world through the presence of evil, the
Wisdom author tells us. Mark’s stories of Jesus healing a hemorrhaging
woman and resuscitating a dead little girl make it clear that Jesus is from
God. As the Son of God he does not will that anyone suffer illness or death.
In the face of such power, the second reading, from Paul’s Second Letter to
the Corinthians, provides a stark contrast. Jesus, who could raise the dead to
new life, “though he was rich, for your sake he became poor” (2 Corinthians 8:9). Our gift of new life from Christ demands our response in charity.

The proceeds benefit the most disadvantaged:
victims of war, oppression, and disasters. Join

who are suffering. May God bless you for your
generosity.

By teaching “total body safety”
we further efforts to stop abuse
Parents and caregivers should stress that a child’s entire body
is private and be watchful of adults who might be “grooming”
a child by constantly tickling, kissing, or hugging them. A
child will often tell a parent he or she does not want to hug or
kiss someone – and parents should listen and respect their
wishes. By teaching “total body safety” to adults, children,
and young people, we are furthering our efforts to stop abuse
and to make the world a safer place for all of God’s children.
For a copy of the VIRTUS® article, “Beyond the myth of the
bathing suit,” email: [email protected].

traje de baño” (beyond the myth of the bathing suit), escriba a jvienna

me? Pedro le responde: Lord, you know that I love you,

Why a Protestant Pastor Became Catholic
Dr. Scott Hahn explains through his legendary testimony how he was militantly anti-Catholic but
self-driven to seek the truth. This ultimately led him into the Catholic Church. He soon became
an ardent defender of the Faith and one of its most passionate promoters.
Parishioner Comments
This CD was AMAZING!!! I was having doubts as to what I believed. Thanks to this talk, I finally found hope I thought did not exist.

A Catholic Bible and a “Catechism of the Catholic Church”
are a must for every Catholic home! (Available in our gift shop.)
God gives us His word in the Bible, and the Magisterial Teachings of the Catholic Church provide
us with direction to follow it. Another way to be a well-informed and a vibrant Catholic is to visit
the USCCB website listed below where you will find a wealth of practical information.

Clarity of Scripture
The Protestant doctrine of the Clarity of Scripture (also referred to as the Perspecuity of Scripture) posits that all things that are necessary for
salvation are clearly understood by the educated as well as the uneducated. It states that the Holy Spirit gives everybody an equal
understanding about matters concerning salvation.
As Catholics, we understand that there are many things in Scripture that are indeed clear and straightforward. However, like the Ethiopian
eunuch on Acts 8:26-39, we under stand that not all aspects of Scr iptur e ar e as easily under stood as other s – or by all people. In the
story of the Ethiopian eunuch, the Apostle Philip met him on the road from Jerusalem. The eunuch was reading the Scriptures and Philip
asked him if he understood what he was reading. He told Philip, “How can I, unless someone instructs me?” (Acts 8:31).
The story of the eunuch is the inspired Word of God – and we are explicitly told in that story that not everybody understands all of Scripture
equally. The Church is the guardian of the Holy Deposit of the Faith (2 Tim. 1:14). According to the Catechism, Scripture must be read
“within the living tradition of the whole Church.” Unfortunately, too many people over the centuries have read it with the intentions of
starting their own “church”.
As St. Peter tells us under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit: “Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of
personal interpretation, for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the holy Spirit spoke under
the influence of God” (2 Pet. 1:20-21).
The main flaw of the doctrine of Perspecuity of Scripture is evident in the almost 50,000 disjointed and perpetually-splintering Protestant
denominations that exist today. If Scripture is so clear that anybody can understand it, then why are there so many denominations - ALL
claiming to have the “truth”.
The catechism tells us: 134 All Sacred Scripture is but one book, and this one book is Christ, "because all divine Scripture speaks of Christ,
and all divine Scripture is fulfilled in Christ"
In short, the Bible is a Catholic Book – written FOR Catholics BY Catholics. It is not something that is to be personally dissected and
individually interpreted. Because it is a Church book – it takes Christ’s Church to interpret it.
St. Augustine, Doctor of the Church and one of the greatest thinkers the Church has ever produce wisely stated, “I would not believe in the
Gospel, had not the authority of the Catholic Church already moved me.”
