Greylock appoints new
President/CEO
John Bissell has been selected by the Greylock Board of Directors
as its next President and Chief Executive Officer. He assumed his
position on October 1, replacing Marilyn Sperling.
John said that, “It has been my honor to have served with Marilyn, and I am excited as
I begin my new position as CEO.” He added that, “Marilyn has been a great leader and
I know I have some big shoes to fill. We have a very solid foundation, and a very strong
vision to help improve the financial lives of the people in Berkshire County. As we say
goodbye to Marilyn, I welcome the opportunity to serve Greylock members, and feel
fortunate to have been mentored and guided by her. The future is exciting to Marilyn,
to me, and I hope to all of you.”
Marilyn said that she was pleased with the Board’s decision saying, “We have worked
closely together for many years, and we share the same values in helping to improve the
financial lives of the people in Berkshire County. I’m delighted to be leaving Greylock
in John’s very capable hands, and I know that the membership will embrace the Board’s
choice of John as our next CEO.”

Your home alarm system could possibly make you a target of a scam. A sign warning would-be
burglars that your house is protected by an electronic alarm system — in the latest scam,
criminals are checking out these signs which often have the original installation date printed
on them. Then they ring the doorbell and pretend to be from the security company, and ask if
they can enter your house to ‘fix’ or ‘update’ your alarm system. One MO is for the scammer to
tell you that his firm has taken over the contract on your existing equipment, and will ask for a
deposit. Will you ever see him again? Nope. Please remember that legitimate companies will
not send a repairman unannounced. And if your company has gone out of business, or if you
need upgrades to your security system, you will be notified in advance by phone or mail, giving
you time to contact the company to get the details — in advance, in writing.

Ensure proper credit for
your loan payment
When making a loan payment by check or money
order, the most secure way to correctly credit
your loan payment is take control and be sure to
list the member name, the type of loan, and the
account number on the memo line of your check
or money order. Make sure you include your
coupon or bill when mailing your payment. And,
if you intend to pay an amount that is different
from the bill, specify where we should apply
those extra funds.
No-fee ATM transactions
Use an ATM anywhere that displays the CO-OP network logo
for no-fee access at more than
30,000 ATMs throughout the U.S. Use your card
with no surcharge fee. One of the easiest ways
to find a participating ATM is to check online at
http://co-opnetwork.org/.
Don’t Become a Victim of
an IRS Impersonation
Scam!
Several tips have been issued by the IRS to help you identify if you are a
potential target of a telephone or email scam or if you find yourself in this
horrible situation:
Scare tactics are used by scammers to try to scare people into making
a false tax payment to the criminal. They threaten you with arrest,
deportation, or that they will revoke your business or driver’s license.
They often leave an urgent call back message via the phone or email.
It is not uncommon for a scam email to contain a fake IRS document
with a phone number or an email address to reply to.
Caller ID spoofing alters the caller ID to make it look like the IRS or
another agency is calling you. Scammers may also use fake IRS titles
and phony badge numbers to make the call seem official. They may
have also searched for your personal information on the internet such
as your name, address, and other details about you to make their
scam sound more legitimate.

Security for numbers
For security purposes Greylock has masked all
but the last four digits of account numbers within
Online Banking. You may still see your full account
number on your statement. To distinguish between
accounts, you may use the ‘Account Nickname’
feature under the Options tab.
The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration
has received reports of about 600,000 contacts
since October 2013. Nearly 4,000 victims have
reported over $20 million in financial losses as a
result of the scams.
In recent years, IRS impersonation scams have become
more common. There have been email phishing scams,
IRS impersonation telephone scams, and identity theft
scams among others.
On many occasions, the IRS has urged the public to stay
alert for scam telephone calls and emails. Criminals pose
as the IRS to scare or trick you to get your money or personal information.
They often target older Americans, newly arrived immigrants and those
who speak English as a second language. However, anyone could be on
their radar.
It’s a great way to start the New Year and protect
yourself from identity theft. Request your free
Credit Report either by phone at 1-877-322-8228,
or online at www.annualcreditreport.com.
Phishing email and regular mail have also been used where the
scammers copy bogus deficiency notices over official
IRS letterhead and send these to potential victims.
Recently, schemers have also been providing an
official IRS address and tell the victim to mail a
receipt for the payment they made to that address.

What is happening to
homeowner premiums?
It’s all over the news…homeowner insurance rates are going up. If you have
not yet received your own renewal, you need to prepare. All of the top insurers
in the Commonwealth have raised rates by as much as 10%— and some even
higher! As a consumer, it can be frustrating to understand. Particularly if you
have NOT had a claim! It’s important to keep in mind that while all insureds
share in the cost of each other’s losses, those homeowners that have had
claims end up paying more than those that are claim free.
Keep your finances
in order.
Help Greylock help you! Members who abuse services
through fraudulent activity and/or cause a loss to the
Credit Union, who use threatening and/or abusive or
inappropriate language or behavior, or who violate the
Credit Union’s federal bylaws will be deemed immediately
ineligible for Greylock’s products or services.
Credit Union losses include but are not limited to:
non-payment of loans; inability to collect on insufficient
funds owed; and uncollectible checks that have been
returned. The Credit Union reserves the right to close
down all ancillary services and accounts with the
exception of the minimum balance requirement in the
membership account. The membership account will not
be closed until the member has been formally expelled
from the Credit Union.
A member’s expulsion from the Credit Union will be
determined by a two thirds vote of the members of the
credit union present at a special meeting called for the
purpose of expulsion, but only after opportunity has been
given him/her to be heard. At the time of the favorable
vote (to terminate membership), all members who have
caused Greylock a loss, or who have had their services
revoked for threatening and/or abusive or inappropriate
language or behavior or who abuse services through
fraudulent activity will be expelled. Expulsion of a
member shall not operate to relieve him/her from liability to Greylock Federal Credit Union. Please allow
your Credit Union to help you if the need arises —
for any reason.
WE MAKE IT EASY
TO ROLL OVER
YOUR 401(K)
Actual loss experience over a five year period play heavily in estimating future
loss and expense trends for the insurance companies. And all the experts
agree—these weather patterns may be our new norm: Halloween Nor’easter
2011; Tropical Storm Irene; Springfield Tornado; Winter Storm Nemo 2013;
Revere Tornado 2014; and of course, Winter Storm Hercules 2014 which devastated most of eastern Massachusetts.
If you are retiring or changing jobs, you may have
complicated choices to make regarding your 401(k)
plan assets. What you do with these assets could
significantly impact your lifestyle in retirement.
What can you do? Talk to us. We can discuss options with you to help offset
that increase. Higher deductibles, bundling discounts, maximizing available
credits for security and loss reduction efforts such as metal roofing… let’s
talk! As an independent insurance agent, we have many options and we will
work with you to make you feel confident that you have the right insurance.
Homeowner insurance still remains one of the best investments you can make
to protect your most valuable asset.
