As Mayor of this City, I offer you a warm welcome to Flowood. Flowood is located in Rankin County, east of Jackson, the Capitol of Mississippi. Because of its strategic location, Flowood is easily accessible by Interstates 55 and 20, as well as the Jackson International Airport which is located in the heart of Flowood. Lakeland Drive (Hwy 25) is the main eastwest corridor of the city and is one of the fastest-growing commercial areas in the state. Diversified with industrial, medical, retail, office and residential areas, Flowood is ideal for both businesses and families. Safety is a priority in Flowood. The crime rate here is extremely low, due in large part to our professionally trained police department which utilizes state-of-the-art law enforcement techniques that maintain the safe home-town feeling we are proud of. Our new state-of-the-art re and training facilities are unlike any other in the state. Businesses will be glad to know that we have a fire rating of “four”. This rating allows savings on insurance premiums. We are one of only four cities in the state of Mississippi with this classification. Gary Rhoads, Mayor You will find plenty to do in our town. Our project of pride is Winners Circle Park, an approximately $4 million mid-city community park that features exercise stations, a landscaped walking track, tennis courts and an amphitheater. This park is often the focal point of our many community events, all free of charge and open to the public. A new 40 acre nature park is just past WCP. It has an important educational component, a place where “city kids” can learn about trees, plants and wildlife. It has extensive walkways through the woods with markers for native tree and plant species, a managed lake with waterfowl, and an amphitheater for outdoor classes, presentations and small public events. We can’t leave out our new bike trail that runs along Liberty Road. Golfers, the Refuge is one of the state’s premiere public golf courses, and is convenient to office and commercial areas. All of this did not happen by accident. The Board of Aldermen has been dedicated in working with the Mayor’s office to demonstrate a pro-business and pro-family philosophy. What is good for families is good for business and what is good for business can also benefit families. Every opportunity for growth is viewed as an opportunity to improve the quality of life for our residents - as well as our corporate citizens. Please come and visit our city. I must warn you however, if you stay very long you are going to want to relocate your family and business interests to Flowood! When Harris's own daughter was upset and crying over a subject she couldn't master, another teacher frantically asked Harris what to do. Her response? "Nothing. She'll be okay. Just let her cry, and when she gets finished crying, we'll work on this. But go take a break for now. When that happens, you don't need to belittle a child… let them do whatever it is that they need to do." 12K Academy Due to the sheer number of students in America's public schools, it's often difficult for even dedicated educators to give individual students the attention they need. Many times, students who don't learn effectively from the 'status quo' are left behind, whether they're underperforming, not being sufficiently challenged, or having their education hampered by harmful social situations. Rosalind Harris knows that first-hand: both of her sons struggled in different ways in local public and private schools. After she began homeschooling them and her daughter, she was surprised to be approached by a number of other parents seeking advice or even asking them to teach their children as well. "You think that it's just an isolated situation with you and your kids, but it's not," she said. "So many kids are falling through the cracks. Our first son is academically gifted in every subject -- he began college at 15 and is currently 19 and a senior at Mississippi College in Clinton. My second son is intellectually gifted, but didn't want to be touched -he would come home frazzled, because kids poked him just for the fun of it. By the time our daughter came around, public school was never an option for her. " It was that need that led her to found 12K Academy, originally simply looking for a building where she and other homeschooling parents could teach their children, as well as those of working parents who weren't able to homeschool. That concept has now expanded into two private schools in Brandon and Hazlehurst, with an expected 22 students this year, ranging from three-year-olds to high school seniors. 12 Harris emphasizes that difference: "[Our seniors] receive a high school diploma. First and foremost, we're a private school, but the curriculum that we use is a homeschool curriculum." "And the proof is in the pudding. Our 19-year-old just came back from studying abroad in Spain for the semester. He'll get his bachelor's, then head to law school. Our second son is in tenth grade and will be dual enrolled at a local community college, where he'll be finishing high school early just as his big brother did." The 12K difference is in more than just the curriculum. The building is set up like a home, with a kitchen, communal tables, bean bags, and assorted relaxing spaces -- no desks. Students work wherever they are comfortable, and at the pace they prefer. They choose every morning which subjects they'll study that day, with minimal input from their teachers. Distance learning is an option for many students as well -- 12K offers regular report cards and transcripts, which can take pressure off parents without educational training. "We teach them how to be self-sufficient," says Harris. "Homeschooled kids fare a lot better when they get to college, because you've got to pace yourself, and we teach them how to do that. We check their folders once a week to make sure all the work is there, but at the same time, they're managing their own work, themselves." This means students can move ahead when they master a subject quickly, or take a extra time to learn something that isn't coming as naturally. "If they don't make an 85 on the subject, we go back and repeat it. Instead of just hurrying along, we go back and figure out what happened." Teaching the children to embrace diversity and differences -- not only in themselves, but in others -is another core value of the school. "There are kids in these situations taking their own lives, because they've just had it, they don't see a way out." One student, she said, had been bullied so badly over his all-over freckles that he'd been wearing his jacket in class for over four years. "It took him two months and two days to be comfortable enough in our environment to take his jacket off," she said, beaming with pride. "And now, when it's hot outside, he's got short sleeves on." homeschool environment like ours, there are mixed ages, both younger and older, and staff from diverse backgrounds to add a wonderful mixture and to help guide the students. Whoever thinks that it's better for a group of 8th graders to be left to their own devices for 7 hours a day, 5 days a week, clearly has not been around a school lately." The school is wellequipped to provide help to students at all grade levels, whether it's from their own teacher or another who has more experience in a particular subject. "We have a group of moms -- every one of us has degrees in different areas, and every one of us is strong in different areas, and that's what we're teaching. We make sure they have what they need as far as the requirements of the state of Mississippi to graduate, but we go above and beyond that. We start preparatory classes at sixth grade for the ACT and the SAT, so they can be prepared." Harris's plans for the school's future are bright and ambitious. They're currently looking for 15 to 30 acres of property to build a dedicated campus. Another student, the "Our goal is to have an elementary, middle school youngest of four sisters, was used to quietly going along with others, but with encouragement from her and high school buildings, but still set up like our teachers, blossomed as an individual and learned to buildings now. There are no desks in our building. express her opinions and make decisions for herself. We don't have janitors, our kids clean. … We want to do hands-on gardening, teaching them about In the course of one year, she went from hiding quietly behind her parents' legs to performing Taylor their environment and how nutrition plays a part in your everyday life." Swift's "Shake It Off" at this year's graduation ceremony. "Her parents were floored, just floored. And parents can be confident in their children's For somebody that shy and that withdrawn, to get educational future, as well -- Harris has no plans to up and sing -- not lip sync, but sing! You know what? If I don't make one red cent [from the school], move on from teaching anytime soon, no matter whose children are involved. "[My daughter] is just that's worth it." going into second grade. I'm gonna be doing this Those social successes are a particular joy to Harris, for a long time anyway! My reason was originally for my three, but it's more like thirty-plus reasons now." disproving some critics' beliefs that homeschooling stunts children's social growth. Flowood welcomes Mississippi’s largest gastroenterology group – opening Spring 2016. With all the growth happening on Lakeland Drive it can be easy to lose sight of the big picture. We come, we go, with barely a glance at the future expanding around us. However, if you travel the length of Lakeland Drive on your Adam Perry daily commute, it is likely that Sales Director you’ve noticed at least one new Copywriter building. At the intersection of Lakeland Drive and Treetops Boulevard, you will notice a two-story, lime green structure. The green is just the paper covering of the insulation adhered to the building's framework. And as strange as a lime green building might seem as you pass by, what you’re seeing is the next step in the evolution of a local business which goes back decades. 16 In the Spring of 2016, the largest gastrointestinal group in the state of Mississippi, GI Associates, will move from their longtime home on North State Street to their new facility in Flowood. Though they have clinics in both Madison and Vicksburg, their Flowood location will be the new hub of their business. “The clinic was founded in 1981 by doctors Jim Sones, Billy Long, and Jim Johnston,” said Todd Warren, CEO of GI Associates. “They wanted to form a clinic which they felt was both inclusive and fair, a facility where a patient could get great care with a more personal touch. They felt like if they could provide that, then their business would be ok.” “To me, you don’t hear that mantra from businesses much even today,” Warren continued, “and I think that has been a big factor in our continued success. Plus, we’ve always tried to stay at the forefront of technology that we can offer our patients. We were the first independent GI practice in the state to have a Pediatric program when we opened that in 2007”. www.MyFlowood.com Endoscopy Center, which has been recognized by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy as a “Center of Excellence.” The GI Associates website adds that they have also been awarded the Certificate of Accreditation by the Accreditation for Ambulatory Healthcare, a three year accreditation which is the maximum bestowed by the organization. GI Associates currently employs 26 physicians, 3 GI pathologists, 2 pediatric gastroenterologists, and 21 gastroenterologists. With the new facility, the practice will continue to expand. “We applied for the Healthcare Go Zone tax break in Flowood,” Todd Warren said. "We met the required criteria. We’ve built a facility which is 88,000 sq. feet and we’ll move into about 70,000. The additional 18,000 sq. feet of space will be held in reserve for us to expand again at a later date.” Dr. Ronald Kotfila “Prior to having our own center, we were using a combination of facilities, mainly hospitals and an outpatient surgery center," explained Dr. Ronald Kotfila, President of GI Associates, “So, just by the nature of our having to use other people’s facilities, there was limited space to do our procedures. There was also a lot of inconvenience for both the patients and the doctors because we had to work around the Going back through the history of GI Associates, you facility’s schedule.” will quickly find that planning for growth and Another facet of GI Associates which sets them apart expansion is nothing new. It has been part of their long-term vision of patient care since the founding of is their partnership with a research group to help the clinic. One of their biggest expansions happened study new drugs and bring them to their patients. in 2001 when GI Associates built their own GI Associates Good Stories, Good People, Good Places 17 GI Associates Relocate To Flowood: “We’ve been partnered with Wake Research for about three years,” said Todd Warren, "Wake Research had only two other groups when we joined and they’ve added several more since, so we’re growing together.” “The research arm is really a hidden gem,” Warren continued. “With as many patients as we have, it really opens up another door. The benefits are twofold: Patients who, if there’s not a treatment working for them and a new study opens up, they have access to free medications and they sometimes get paid for it. And, secondly, they are exposed to medicines which they may have never had access to otherwise. Now, that treatment may work or it may not, but the bottom line is they are able to have that access.” “When drug companies are going through the FDA approval process,” Dr. Kotfila added, “they go through steps of research with the drug. When they get to the point where they have gone through all the safety measures and have completed preliminary studies showing that the drug seems to be doing what they want it to do, then they have to push it out. They’re required to get a large number of patients treated under a study. That’s what is referred to as ‘Phase Three Trials.’ We partnered with Wake Research because they are a means to be the organizing part of the process. The drug companies will go to them then Wake Research will look at us and other clinics and decide which study is a good fit for our clinic.” With 2016 coming up faster every day, the leadership of GI Associates are preparing to move their entire facility to their new home in Flowood. And, as with anyone, they are somewhat reflective on their time in Jackson and the factors that grew over time to precipitate such a move. “Mainly, we just outgrew our existing facilities,” Dr. Kotfila said. “We’ve had issues with parking for quite a while. Several years ago, we had to move most of our billing department to an 8,000 sq. foot facility over on Treetops Blvd. That’s where they are currently, but they’ll move into the new building once it’s completed as will our clinic, pathology department, some of our offices, and our Endoscopy Center.” Now, as their next building’s green facade is covered with new walls and the practice prepares for a very large move, the citizens of Flowood can watch their progress with pride. Another incredible local business has chosen to call our city home, another group of professionals will add their skills to the already over-flowing bounty of local talent, and we will all be the beneficiaries of GI Associates decision to join us in the great experiment known as Flowood. Good Stories, Good People, Good Places 21 US Foods Opens Flowood Facility Most of us remember the tornadoes that tore through Mississippi in April of 2014, killing ten in people in Winston County and another in Tupelo. While Rankin County thankfully avoided fatalities, many businesses were damaged, and the US Foods facility in Pearl was destroyed. July 17 saw another major step taken in the recovery from those storms. Other US Foods locations filled the gap while the company built its new distribution center in Flowood. That new center opened on Friday, a 272,000 square foot facility that will serve U.S. Foods’ Mississippi and Louisiana markets — representing about 4,000 customers and over $1 billion in annual sales. The building is near other industrial sites on Underwood Drive, such as Nucor and Puckett Machinery, giving it easy access to both Interstate 55 and 20, the airport, and railway distribution. "They took a good site and made a great facility," said State Rep. Tom Weathersby. It features multiple temperature zones, two produce ripening rooms, an increased selection of fresh produce, and a demonstration kitchen with top end A/V equipment and menu development software — part of US Foods’ ongoing program allowing restauranteurs to visit their facilities and collaborate on developing menu items for their own businesses. 22 20 www.myflowood.com www.MyFlowood.com The new distribution center will serve 77 delivery trucks every day, and employ between 300 and 400 people, said U.S. Foods’ division president Gil Smith. “This is an exciting day for US Foods and for our customers throughout Mississippi as this new facility allows us to more efficiently service our customers and provides our employees with an exceptional working environment,” Smith said. “This new building has everything we need to be able to keep kitchens cooking for our customers for many years to come.” “This past year has been all about rebuilding, and we couldn’t have done it without help from our community,” he added. “The support that we’ve received just reinforces what we already knew – Flowood is one of the best business communities in the country.” With more than 150 years of experience in the foodservice industry, US Foods has a unique understanding of the needs of today’s chefs and restaurateurs.
