They are the central component to the control, interaction and connection of either the machine or process. An ICP provides similar functionality as Box PC’s or Industrial PC’s. As a global leader of embedded computer technology, Kontron works closely with customers to define new standards in industrial computing. The last area of innovation is to ensure that ICP’s are “Internet of Things (IoT) ready”. Kontron’s latest ICP’s have multiple connectivity possibilities. They can act solely as a gateway or combine for example motion control, human machine functionality and IoT gateway in one platform. Kontron is working with an extensive network of partners and other suppliers to ensure that the ICP’s are qualified on different IoT platforms. Kontron focused their innovation around three major topics: Modified Standard (MoSt) Silicon innovation with “Forever Young” Kontron believes that a range of standard products is required as every company or application has an individual need. Kontron’s modular embedded computer designs bring new meaning to innovation. As the leader when it comes to standards like SMARC and ComExpress Kontron ensures that it is an early adaptor for the latest processor technology. This unique position is used for building the Kontron Industrial Computer Platforms. All new models are based on a modular design based on either SMARC or ComExpress. This concept provides some advantages: » Break the CPU obsolescence barrier, easy upgradeable with the latest processor technology. The interfaces and the mechanical parts remain untouched while upgrading the core technology by replacing the module. » Unlimited scalability, by just replacing the core “PC” technology with another module the whole system is adjusted to the requirements. Reduced Total Cost of Ownership with “Wartungsfrei” “Wartungsfrei” is not a feature but a way of thinking as Kontron designs ICP’s. What can be improved to reduce the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). This starts simply as a battery free or fanless design but ends beyond how can we build in remote diagnostics or self-healing capabilities. With the MoSt services, Kontron offers the unique combination of leveraging a standard but modified to your individual needs. Some advantages: » Rapid prototyping and application testing » Fast time to market, ground up custom design not required. » Individual look and feel; corporate identity, special features Kontron MoSt specialists work with customers to design individual solutions. Kontrons “Maintenance Free” or “Wartungsfrei” covers different design features which reduce the the “Total Cost of Ownership” (TCO) of computer boards or systems used in an industrial, medical or retail environment. Based on the required feature set or performance there are different levels of “Wartungsfrei” defined. It is the focus of Kontron to maximise the level of “Wartungsfrei” in all products. No moving parts Remote system diagnostics » No internal or external fan is required to cool the unit in order to operate at the designed CPU frequency with 100 % CPU load within the specified environmental temperature, without impacting the life cycle of the used components. » The KBox family provides the capabilities to remotely monitor all critical parameters. The system is capable to run at a defined time schedule system diagnostics and automatically provide a status report. Alarms are automatically generated in case of a pre-warning. » The option to operate the unit without the need of rotating storage media such as HDD’s. Instead storage options such as SSD’s or CFasts will be used. No battery required All maintenance free KBox IPC’s are able to operate without the use of a battery. » The “real-time” clock is able to operate for a minimal period of 40 days without the use of an external power source. During these 40 days the real-time clock continues normal operation and all semi static information like BIOS-settings are always stored in a non-volatile memory and remain available even after this period is over. » Optional data can be stored in non-volatile memory without the use of a battery and an external power source. Hold up » In case of an external power failure a hold up time should be available of at least 10ms to ensure a secure power off operation. » Manageability features via Embedded Web Server (such as remote control, System Event Log viewer, firmware upgrade). » Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) hardware monitors power, voltages, memory and all critical components’ temperatures. Extensive sensors monitoring (around 100 IPMI sensors) and event generation base on thresholds and discrete reading. Remote save software update » Robust BIOS remote flash update with rollover capability; Fail-safe field updateable BIOS. Rescue Button (RSQ) Operation » In the event the system does not properly start-up or gets hung-up and restarting (cold booting) the system does not help, it is possible to switch to a backup boot flash and then restart the system. Power On/Off options » The system design allows the system to power on automatically after loss of power. 2 www.kontron.com KBox e Availabl Q1 / 2015 KBox A-201 connect KBox A-202 1) 2) 4) 5) 7) MAINTENANCE FREE Processor System Memory Graphics Ethernet Miscellaneous KBox A-101 KBox A-103 1) 2) 4) 7) 1) 2) 4) 7) KBox C-100 KBox C-101 Family 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) CPU Intel® Quark™ SoC X1020 Intel® Atom™ E3845 Intel® Atom™ D2550 1.86 GHz Intel® Atom™ E3845 3rd Generation Intel® Core™, Celeron® Max. Simply connected The IEEE 1588 Standard or Precision Time Protocol (PTP) defines a method to synchronize distributed real time clocks in a packet-based network. By using this protocol it is even possible to synchronize with an accuracy of less than one microsecond. Just take the proven and tested standard system building blocks, add your demanded features, and get your ready to go application ready platform. Based on our partner network, Kontron offers a unique combination of technologies. Using Kontron hardware and skilled developers, our IoT offerings range from connectivity to the units in field, network components, integration to existing ERP / CRM systems, server products and even solutions for cloud storage or big data analyses. Industrial control systems require increasing levels of synchronization and accuracy, in applications such as robotics or machine-tools the drive synchronization has to be highly precise. PTPs high accuracy and best performance is enabled using a hardware that offers hardware-based time stamping. Previously special and expensive FPGA implementations were used and now Ethernet controllers such as the Intel® I210 LAN controller support this functionality. To enable cost-effective solutions with optimized performance, Kontron’s entire Embedded Box PC Family utilizes the Intel I210 LAN controller. » No NRE » Fast time to market » Reduced TCO » Proven building blocks » No risk on design » Fast demo units / EFT » 4 weeks from idea to first demo unit Go for IoT To offer you the best-in-class combination we provide ready-made solutions for: Kontron designs all main parts like BIOS, HW, Firmware, Mechanics, Middleware. With our expertise any modification on the Kontron standard portfolio can be done easily and quickly based on Kontrons available building blocks. to the customer. On top of that the precise timing also provides a solid basis for real time Industrial Ethernet. Therefore also industrial field busses such as Profinet, Powerlink or also Ethernet/IP rely on the functionality the IEEE1588 standard offers.
