Nanotechnology Certificate at Northcentral Technical College (NTC) Frank Fernandes Richard Wilkosz NTC Demographics For over 100 years, NTC has served a 10 county district in Northcentral Wisconsin 7 campuses: Wausau, Antigo, Medford, Phillips, Merrill, Spencer and Wittenberg Offers 36 Associate Degree Programs, 23 Technical Diploma Programs, and 96 Certificates 25,000 learners served in 2012, NTC was listed No. 21 out of the nation's top 50 "fastest growing" public twoyear colleges nation in a recent analysis of U.S. Department of Education data conducted by Community College Week magazine Industry Demographics Labor Market Analysis revealed that the 5 major industry sectors are Construction Manufacturing Information Financial Activities Education and Health (source: Marathon County Workforce profile http://worknet.wisconsin.gov/worknet_info/downloads/CP/marathon_profile.pdf) Nano Certificate Model INPUTS ACTIVITIES Grant Funding Nanotechnology Certificate Nano-Link affiliation NTC facilities and nanotechnology equipment (AFM) SHORT-TERM OUTCOMES LONG-TERM OUTCOMES Effective use of Nano Link curriculum and development of Labs for Nanocourses Increased K-14 student interest in STEM areas with attention to underrepresented student participation Attended Workshops @ Penn State Recruitment/Advisory Committees/In-service Presentations/ Outreach Development/ strengthening of business partnerships Increased awareness and application of nanotechnology’s impact on education and industry leading to interships Increased utilization of nanotechnology applications in regional businesses Enhanced student outcomes in NTC programs Increased applications of NTC’s Nanoscience Lab Nano Certificate Courses General Biology (4 credits) or General Chemistry or (4 credits) General A & P (4 credits) Nano 1 (3 credits) Nano 2 (3 credits) Total 10 or 12 Credits or College Physics 1 &2 (6 credits) or Course Descriptions (Adopted from Nano-Link Curriculum) Nanotechnology 1, provides an introduction into nanoscience and includes the history of nanotechnology and also an introduction into the tools used to study the world at the nanoscale. This course also covers a sense of scale, exponential notation, surface area to volume and the various forces that are predominant at various scale levels (macro, micro and nano). Course Descriptions (Adopted from Nano-Link Curriculum) Nanotechnology 2, focuses on the material science, chemistry and physics aspects of the nanoscale. The course begins with the discussion of elemental attributes and how the environment can impact properties and performance of the starting material. Crystal structure and material properties are then discussed with an emphasis on differences in interactions and measurements at various scale realms. Included in this course would be a capstone project that students would complete in conjunction with a specific business or industry.
