Fred Meijer Standale Trail Lake Michigan Drive Pedestrian Tunnel
Supporters The community support for this project has been outstanding! We will continue to provide updates and opportunities for residents and local business owners to get involved with this project. It is important to also note some of our community partners: “[A tunnel] provides a safe connection under M-45, a high volume regional arterial, which will allow users to connect with points of commerce, public transportation , and other regional trails. “ “With M-45 being such a busy state corridor with lots of transit users needing to cross at this location, we are very much in support of this tunnel. “ “The proposed tunnel would provide a much needed (safer and more direct) crossing of M-45 , a multi-lane, hightraffic roadway, and it would produce an important transportation asset for the regional community.” Contact For more information, please contact the City of Walker: City Manager’s Office Fundraising [email protected] 616.791.6787 Engineering Department Scott Conners, City Engineer Design and Project Management [email protected] 616.791.6792 Fred Meijer Standale Trail Website: http://www.ci.walker.mi.us Facebook.com/CityofWalkerMI @CityofWalkerMI Safety. Usability. Community. Lake Michigan Drive Pedestrian Tunnel Overview Project Budget The Fred Meijer Standale Trail (FMST) is a primary regional trail in the west Grand Rapids’ metropolitan area. It connects the Fred Meijer Millennium Park trail network, Kent Trails to the south, and the City of Grand Rapids bicycle lane network to the east. It is also a short segment away from connecting to the Fred Meijer Pioneer Trail, which upon completion, will link the Musketawa Trail and the Fred Meijer White Pine Trail. The FMST connects schools, parks, neighborhoods, civic areas, businesses, and points of commerce within Standale and the City of Walker. Project Timeline Project planning and engineering Deadline to secure local funding and stakeholder support The FMST currently has a gap at Lake Michigan Drive and directs trail users, via sidewalk, a half mile out of their way to cross at a signalized intersection. However, many trail users navigate across the five-lane road to continue along the alignment of the trail. The location of the gap is within the City of Walker's Standale Downtown Development District and adjacent to a large apartment complex, a condo complex, and a City parking facility that is heavily utilized by GVSU students riding the RAPID's bus service. MDOT Conditional To increase safety and usability of this regional trail, various crossing alternatives were analyzed. After the benefits, liabilities, and costs of each option were considered, a tunnel crossing was chosen as the preferred crossing option. Additional local funds are required to secure MDOT funding. We need the assistance and support of local donors, businesses , and organizations to secure the remaining $850,000 to proceed with this project. Our goal is to involve community stakeholders in the planning and design process as possible. Project bidding and award Estimated Cost : Local Funds Still Needed Total Estimated Project Cost: $1,120,000 $850,000 $1,970,000 Break ground to begin construction Project completion *This is an estimated timeline
