“Read What’s on Our Minds” ~
A Middle School Photography Project
Stephanie Wightman, a teacher at Smithton Jr. High
School, talked with TAWL members about the
photography/writing project she does with her 6th
graders at the end of the school year. Stephanie
described the assignment as “project based and
coupled with the promise of a community-wide
celebration” at the conclusion.
Each student takes ten photos. Classroom instruction
includes lessons that support the students in writing
about their photos. Final projects are presented to
families and community members at an evening photo
gallery event. Teachers hearing Stephanie’s presentation
were amazed by the photos taken by her students and
by the students’ writing pieces.Stephanie shared stories
of how the
project impacts
her students as
well as her
teaching.
