ITA, working with the committees in
planning their 2014 projects, planning
the upcoming TITANIUM EUROPE
conference this May 19-21st in Sorrento,
Italy, and preparing for the ITA’s
30th Anniversary Meeting coming up
September 21-24th this fall in Chicago,
You may expect updated Bulletins from the ITA on a
regular basis now. With all the committee activities and
programs the ITA organizes on behalf of the titanium
industry, an annual Bulletin is no longer capable of covering
everything that we do. The Bulletins will come to you via
email and also occasionally by post mail so you do not miss
seeing any of the undertakings ITA is striving to achieve.
Remember, any member of the ITA is invited to
participate in committee activities. If you are interested in
learning how to join a committee, please do not hesitate to
contact me and I would be pleased to provide you with more
information. Committee meetings typically occur quarterly
and require additional time via email for project related work.
My continued thanks goes out to our many Members, the
ITA staff and our Titanium Today magazine contributors
who devote hours to expand use of titanium based products
in existing and new market sectors and applications through
the Association’s endeavors. We could not achieve everything
we do without your continued dedication and assistance.

A sub-group of the Applications committee, the Industrial
committee is currently examining projects which could
benefit the titanium industry as a whole. Rob Henson,
Manager, Business Development for VSMPO Tirus, chairs
the Industrial group and explains how revising MR0175, a
standard originally published by NACE in the early 1980’s
might prove to be a beneficial project for the Association to
undertake on behalf of the industry.
“The titanium industry has been receiving more and
more Grade 12 requests for sour service related to oil and
gas production but there are a couple of requirements that
are concerning.” Henson explains, “Grade 12 is a higher
strength material than Grade 2 but it has a considerably
lower maximum hardness value. Grade 2 in the specification
has a 100 HRB max but Grade 12 is limited to 92 HRB.
While some have developed a procedure for hardness testing
of titanium, what is troubling are the anneal parameters.
There is a specification that tells us what the properties have
to be but at the same time the specification is telling us how
to make it with the annealing requirements. That becomes a
real problem with today’s manufacturing technologies when
running continuous anneal lines and plate products.”
The committee has identified this as a task that we
should examine more closely to see what would be involved
with updating the standard. From a materials selection
standpoint, weight of equipment is becoming more of an
issue as they move these production units to floating systems
and additional weight comes with quite an additional cost
component. While in the past they might have selected
other metals, because of the weight penalty, titanium is now
sought after.
The committee is currently procuring a copy of the
original NACE ballot to evaluate if this standard could be
updated to give the industry the properties that are required
rather than telling the industry how to make it.
The committee representatives believe it may be possible
to get Grade 12 to the hardness requirements to make
commercial products. Henson further explains: “If we can
show good metallurgy data that we are successful in getting
a complete anneal with the continuous processing we may
have a chance to revise the standard instead of having to
invest in submitting a new ballot for consideration. Revising
the specification would drastically reduce time and costs as
opposed to submitting something new.”
Once an assessment is completed, if the committee
determines the standard cannot be revised, a complete report
will be submitted to all ITA Members, outlining the results
of the examination. An assessment is anticipated for the 3rd
Quarter 2014.

ITA has formed a medical subcommittee created to explore
burgeoning opportunities in the international field of hightech medical devices and instruments. The committee, led
by chair Susan M. Abkowitz, has drafted a list of targeted
objectives for 2014 and 2015 in conjunction with the general
strategies of the ITA.
The medical subcommittee is composed of executives
from ITA member organizations, all which have an interest
in seeing titanium use expanded for medical applications. In
addition to Abkowitz, the group includes Fanny Carrillon
of ACNIS International, Villeurbanne, France; Mary
Downes, Titanium Industries Inc., Rockaway, NJ; Jeff Slater,
Fort Wayne Metals, Fort Wayne, IN; and Tom Zuccarini,
Dynamet Incorporated, Washington PA.
“We have an active medical committee and members
are enthusiastic about helping to grow awareness and
future opportunities in this field for the titanium industry,”
Abkowitz said. She serves as the chief operating officer
and vice president of technology for Dynamet Technology
Inc., Burlington, MA. Abkowitz explained that, guided
by the two-year plan of targeted objectives, she and her
subcommittee associates will work to increase visibility
both within ITA and its publications as well as through
marketing to other industry organizations and trade shows.
She acknowledged that while titanium has long held a spot
as a premier material of choice for the medical industry,
there has been a distinct surge in business opportunities in
recent years, with an even greater potential for near-term
penetration into this sector.
According a variety of industry analysts and observers,
as well as companies involved in the design and production
of titanium medical devices and implants, much of the
anticipated international growth in the medical sector is
due to two factors: the demographics of the aging “Baby
Boomer” population in North America; and the rising
demand for enhanced medical treatments in emerging
consumer markets found in South America, Asia and India.
Utilizing the support of the ITA as well as alliances with
international partners, the medical subcommittee will look
to build upon titanium’s existing strong base of applications
in the medical field and identify areas for new growth.
Much of the effort will involve expanded communication
and outreach by the ITA to help educate designers of
medical devices on the advantages of specifying titanium
for new applications. As part of the two-year plan, the ITA
has laid out a communication strategy for subcommittee
activities through five points for 2014. First, this year the
subcommittee will “collaborate on editorial topics for
the ITA’s quarterly Titanium Update E-Newsletter and
Titanium Today magazine.” Second, committee members
have been charged with “maintaining the product &
services categories in the ITA’s Titanium Resource Center
to ensure there are no duplicates or unaccounted items.” The
subcommittee will review incoming requests received by the
ITA for new products and services relating to the medical
business sector to determine what, if anything, should be
added to the Resource Center.
Third, the subcommittee will “discuss ideas for potential
trade show recommendations on where the ITA should

exhibit and prepare appropriate collateral materials for
public distribution.” On this point, the group will make
recommendations to the ITA’s trade show committee to
consider the association’s participation in medical trade
shows. In turn, the trade show committee will provide a
copy of the show assessment form throughout the year for all
medical related exhibits for the subcommittee’s reference and
future consideration.
Fourth, the group will “develop market specific general
sessions, inviting appropriate panel speakers and make
recommendations for distinguished speakers at future
TITANIUM conferences.”
Fifth, members of the committee will “solicit individuals
or organizations that might qualify to apply for the annual
Titanium Applications Development (TAD) award,
sponsored by the ITA, and will submit a minimum of two
nominations for the grant committee’s consideration.” Three
years ago, Synthes Spine Inc., a West Chester, PA-based unit
of Synthes International, was the recipient of the prestigious
TAD award, recognizing the development of the Vertical
Expandable Prosthetic Titanium Rib (VEPTR) implant.
Next year the medical subcommittee will focus on four
activities: gather and recommend ideas for the promotion
of titanium medical applications in the ITA’s literature
and website content; outline organizations that are not yet
aligned with the ITA and assist in the referral of individuals
in those organizations who potentially might qualify for ITA
membership; evaluate opportunities to assist in technical
development within the titanium industry (non-proprietary
alloys, specifications, etc.); and evaluate methods to address
concerns of potential users of titanium and ensure an
industry interest in their application, regardless of the size of
the application, material used or market segment.

The committee recently met and discussed topics appropriate
for the next Aerospace edition of Titanium Today magazine.
It was suggested creating executive summaries of current
industry related symposiums might be beneficial to ITA
Membership. Members can expect an executive summary
of the Speed News Raw Materials & Manufacturers Supply
conference via E-News from the Aerospace committee soon.
Some of the executive summaries will also be published in
the Aerospace edition of Titanium Today.
The committee will also be responsible for making
recommendations to the planning committee suggestions
for potential distinguished level speakers at the TITANIUM
Conferences. The planning committee is always seeking
fresh, dynamic, keynote level speakers to compliment the
annual show.
Like the other Applications committees, the Aerospace
committee will be offering their assistance in soliciting
individuals or organizations who may qualify to apply for
the annual Titanium Applications Development award.

It is the mission of the Education Committee to help facilitate
the expanded use of titanium based products in existing and
new applications by enlarging the knowledge base of titanium
through education, training and exchange of information with
universities and other academic networks. The committee’s
primary objective is to contribute to the growth of the titanium
industry and to promote selection of titanium as a competitive
material by providing fundamental knowledge about titanium
and its applications. The committee is co-chaired by Dr. Markus
Holz, President, AMG’s Engineering Systems Division and CEO,
ALD Vacuum Technologies GmbH and by Graham Walker,
Vice President, Sales and Marketing for AMETEK - Reading
Alloys.
Recently, the ITA Education committee has been successful
in gaining the consent of The Materials Society (TMS) to
convert past World Titanium Conference Proceedings into
digital format for public viewing on the ITA website. Five of
the Proceedings will be available in 2014 with the anticipated
remaining volumes being available in 2015.
“This is a huge endeavor the ITA is undertaking”, explains
Graham Walker, “many of the past World Titanium Conference
Proceedings are no longer published or available in print for
purchase”. Markus Holz added “By funding the conversion of
past World Titanium Conference Proceedings into an E-Book
format, the ITA’s Education committee is not only furthering its
mission and objectives but will also be preserving these historical
documents on behalf of the titanium industry.” It is anticipated
phase I of the project will be completed sometime in the 4th
Quarter, 2014.
The Education committee continues to support the Poster
Session Exhibits for Research & Development in titanium
and the Best Master Dissertation on titanium where a prize
of $1,000 is awarded to the winner. ITA continues to sponsor
CSIRO’s Titanium Challenge and the winner of this program
is automatically invited to participate in the annual Dissertation
program at the ITA’s annual conference.

It’s Not Too late to Participate!
TITANIUM EUROPE 2014 is hosted and organized by
the ITA and will be the Association’s 2nd annual event in
Europe. The conference provides a platform specifically
focused on European oriented topics attracting a wide range
of delegates. TITANIUM EUROPE will offer networking
opportunities to exchange ideas and gain valuable insight
into the state of the global titanium industry.
“While TITANIUM EUROPE was not originally
envisioned to be an event where delegates would choose to
attend in addition to our annual US conference, we have
found many industry professionals who conduct business
in the US and in the EU have found attending both events
beneficial in their business activities.”, explains Jennifer
Simpson, executive director for the ITA which is located
in Denver, Colorado, “Over 20 organizations new to the
TITANIUM Conferences have registered for the Sorrento
event so far and we have 50 exhibitors with over 350
individuals have registered to date.” Simpson also adds
while the guest rooms at the Hilton Sorrento Palace are
now limited in availability, there are plenty of hotels in the
immediate area for overflow needs. Once the ITA room
block has sold out at the Hilton Sorrento Palace, the ITA
will post contact details for a local travel agency to help our
guests find alternatives for lodging.

website and the planning committee anticipates all the
remaining details to be finalized by the beginning of

Chaired by Dawne Hickton, ITA’s Vice President and RTI International Metals, Inc. Chairperson, CEO & President, it is the
objective of the membership committee to increase association membership, while retaining current members, such that the
ITA continues to be, and grows as, the definitive International Trade Association for the titanium industry.
The membership committee will promote the use of the Titanium Resource Center, the ever popular online directory of
products & services which was launched earlier this year, through print and online media, continuing to drive more traffic to
ITA’s Member organizations.
The committee has also created an Individual Membership category which will allow Retirees, Professionals in Transition,
and Customers of Titanium metal to join, participate in committee activities, and receive all ITA Membership benefits.

ITA MEMBERSHIP REFERRAL PROGRAM
Earn credit toward your membership dues by referring new companies to the Association.
The membership referral program provides an incentive for existing members to reduce their
dues while bringing in new membership to the Association. How? It’s as easy as 1-2-3!
1 Complete the membership referral form (available by
contacting the ITA at 303-404-2221 or download the
form by visiting the Members Only section of the ITA
web site at www.titanium.org.)
2 ITA will mail a membership application to the new
company.
3 Once the new company joins ITA, the referring member
will receive a discount equal to 50% of the new member’s
dues for the following renewal year.

Example 1
Level 2 ITA member who pays annual dues of $1,000
refers a $1,000 Level 2 producer who joins the ITA.
ITA referring member receives $500 credit on the
following year’s renewal dues.
Example 2
Level 15 ITA member who pays annual dues of $40,000
refers two companies: 1) Level 3 $2,500 payer and 2)
Level 10 $13,000 payer who both join the ITA during the
calendar year.
ITA referring member receives $7,750 credit on the
following year’s renewal dues. (2,500 + 13,000 / 2 = $7,750)
Rules & Restrictions:
• The discount will not exceed the total value of the referring member’s dues level. i.e. If referring member is a $4,500 level payer, and a $10,000 level
payer joins ITA under the referral program, referring member would receive a discount of $4,500 on the following year’s renewal.
• ITA members may refer as many companies as they wish, but the discounted dues will only be provided if the referred company joins the ITA.
• Referrals expire within 1 calendar year upon receipt by the ITA.

Members to participate on
the Consumer Committee Needed
The individual Applications committee sub groups are coming along nicely with
projects planned for 2014 and 2015 but we need Members to volunteer to serve
& Chair on the Consumer committee. This group will:
• Recommend consumer related trade shows where ITA should consider
exhibiting;
• Provide a method to address the concerns of the potential user of titanium
and ensure an industry interest in their application regardless to the size of
the application, material used or market segment.
• Offer assistance in the form of accurate and timely information to potential
designers, fabricators and end users of titanium, professional and social
organizations and private entities involved in generating, producing or
disseminating information about titanium.
• Suggest topics for the upcoming Consumer edition of Titanium Today.
Quarterly meetings are anticipated with additional time devoted to project planning on occasion and typically by email.

At the last ITA conference a delegate
approached me with a great idea. A concept
where attendees at the annual conferences
would see examples of different titanium
commercial products and end user applications
up on the screen in between the general session
presentations. Compiling these examples
might provide insight and thought and might
encourage ideas & discussion how to expand the industry
within the context of the conference. So, we look to our
Membership to help us with this idea….ITA is interested
in collecting any nonproprietary images, videos or high
