Note
Dear Friends,
At this writing, we are in the final days of what promises
to be a long-remembered exhibit of wildlife art by local
artists Jim, Joe and Bob Hautman. We’ve enjoyed having
hundreds of new guests in the gallery throughout the
show. Please join me in thanking these remarkable
artists for exhibiting with us. And a special thank you
to Guest Curator Jim Dayton for bringing us this show.
As we approach the holiday season, please consider a
gift to the Minnetonka Center for the Arts annual fund.
While the majority of our operations (65 percent) is
funded by tuition revenues, we must raise the balance
through contributions. We work hard to keep our
classes accessible to the broadest possible audience
through our extensive Outreach programs and by keeping
tuition rates affordable ($10-$12 per hour). If not for
the generosity of individuals like you, and funders like
the Minnesota State Arts Board and The McKnight
Foundation, it would not be possible. This fiscal year
we need to raise nearly $400,000. Your gift, whatever
the amount, will be greatly appreciated and put to good
use. Please see page 7 for more information on making
a gift today!
My best wishes to you for a most joyous holiday season!
We’ve planned another extraordinary Arts of the
Holidays Show & Sale for you – the most enjoyable
holiday shopping destination in town. With artwork
and fine craft by more than 100 artists at both our
locations, you’ll find original gifts and support local
artists and the Art Center at the same time. Stop by
often, as new work is added throughout the show.

Mary Lee Dayton
Tribute to a friend and benefactor
It is with sadness that we share that our dear friend Mary Lee
Dayton passed away on August 21, peacefully at home after
battling pancreatic cancer for almost a year. Known for her
generosity and civic leadership, Mary Lee Dayton was also
a member and supporter of the Minnetonka Center for the
Arts. More than once, her financial gifts helped meet goals
and enable projects for growth. Her involvement extended
to the studios as well, where she studied figural drawing,
1
painting and sculpture. Our community is diminished with
her passing. We will miss her very much.
ABOUT THE COVER: Discovering self-worth in clay
Featured on the cover is one of Geneviève
Chamberland’s art students from the Project
for Pride in Living (PPL) program. PPL is a
nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering
low-income people to become self-reliant
through integrated services. Minnetonka Center
for the Arts has been partnering with PPL for
about five years. Shannon Siegfried Floe, PPL
Youth Program Manager, says the art classes
provided by Minnetonka Center for the Arts
help young people know that they matter.
Many of the families served by PPL are refu-
gees from Africa, all are financially struggling.
For the children, the art is not only a fun,
creative diversion from a hard life but also
builds confidence, exposes them to new ideas
and experiences and helps them be more
successful in school. Artist-Instructor
Geneviève Chamberland believes that by
working with clay and creating something
of value and beauty out of the most basic
element – dirt! – the children discover their
their own value and beauty.
The Minnetonka Center for the Arts is fortunate
to have Artist-Instructors like Geneviève and
community partners like PPL who make our
mission become real in individual lives.
Much of our work takes place beyond the
Art Center walls. Please read the story on
page 5 as we spotlight all of our Outreach
Artist-Instructors and community partners.
Your financial support helps make this
Outreach work possible. Please remember
the Minnetonka Center for the Arts in your
year-end giving this year.

Nicole Buchholz
As Children & Youth Program Director,
Nicole Buchholz creates children and teen
series classes and family workshops, plans
art birthday parties, coordinates school
field trips and manages youth community
outreach programs. She hit the ground
running last February, finishing plans
for Summer Arts Camp 2013, which she
managed with grace and aplomb her first
time around. A moment of gratification
came on June 28 when she helped the
Extreme Papier Mâché class of 7- and 9-year
olds parade their vibrant, GIANT fruits and
vegetables from the Sculpture Studio to the
Café. Nicole’s sweet temperament belies
the extraordinarily hard-working woman
she is. With undergraduate degrees (triple
major) from University of WisconsinMadison and a master’s degree in Arts
Administration from Boston University,
Nicole brings a wealth of knowledge to her
position. Previously she held the position
of Arts Education Manager with COMPAS
of St. Paul where she coordinated more than
800 performances, workshops, exhibits and
professional development sessions. Nicole

Sculpture Studio News: Pewter Casting
[above] is now available. Pewter is a lowtemperature casting metal that enables a
more immediate experience with the lost
wax sculpture process. While pewter castings
are small (pewter is twice the cost of bronze),
students can complete a project in just two
classes. MIG welding of aluminum is now
possible due to a new spool gun. There’s
also a new crucible for melting aluminum.
From the Ceramics Studio: Thank you to
John Stander who, in memory of his wife
Isobel, has gifted a clay extruder and other
tools from her studio. “Having her tools
repurposed here is very special,” says Studio
Manager Lee Persell. “It’s as if Isobel is still
with us in a way. We miss her very much.”

board member Spotlight
Tom Hull
Tom Hull, recently appointed Board
of Directors Chair, genuinely admires the
Minnetonka Center for the Arts and the
work that it does. As a successful chief
investment officer, including 30 years with
Wells Fargo, Tom has been a supporter
for many years and leader on the Board of
Directors since 2009. He chaired the Gala’s
fundraising team last year, setting an
example and exceeding the goal. Yet Tom
sees beyond the numbers. “If you look at
a balance sheet, it may look like our assets
are the building,” he says, “but the assets here
are really the people: the staff and the artistinstructors. I’m looking forward to getting
a better understanding of the operations and
where I might be of assistance making life
easier and creating more awareness in the
community.” Executive Director Roxanne
Heaton agrees, “I think he will be a great
strategic voice. He’s got a big, long view of
things and I think that perspective will be
especially valuable in the next year as we revisit
the strategic plan and priorities going forward.”
His mother-in-law, Lucia Morison, is a shining
example of Art Center loyalty. For Tom,
her commitment has strengthened his
commitment. Since the 1970s, Lucia has been
a consistent member/donor, star student,
dedicated painter and welcomed exhibitor.
She persists in her determination and desire
to be at the Art Center every week. With
a nod to the bar that’s been set, Tom says
we’ll be seeing more of him, “I just like the
atmosphere there. It’s an upbeat place to be.”
Artist Spotlight
Community Outreach Artist-Instructors
This is a story about the power of art to enhance and sometimes transform lives told through the experiences of three Outreach artist-instructors. Each artist works with a different audience served
by the Minnetonka Center for the Arts Outreach Program: adults with disabilities, seniors with memory loss and underserved children and teens.
challenged by memory loss out of their
isolation. While their hands are busy, they
chat, help each other and share stories triggered by the sensory stimulation of the art.
Ruth
Mason
It’s just before noon and students
begin to arrive to the Minnetonka
Center for the Arts’ Ridgedale classroom. Many have been at their jobs
all morning and are looking forward
to a break and some creativity to
recharge after work. This is a group
of adults who are attending art classes
through eQuality – Pathways to
Potential, which helps individuals with
developmental disabilities maximize
their potential and actively participate
in life’s opportunities including work,
recreation, education and community
involvement. Artist-Instructor Ruth
Mason has been working with adults
with disabilities for several years,
providing art classes for our partners
eQuality and Choice, Inc.
Inspired by an exhibit of China’s terra
cotta warriors, Ruth introduced a series of
Asian-themed projects. One was Chinese
brush painting. “It was fun because it’s
very process oriented and highly stylized.
Different brush strokes create different
shapes,” says Ruth. “Everyone was able
to participate in an ancient style of art.”
They also created warrior figures, not
literally battle related, but a figure from
their personal lives that made them feel
safe, protected. It opened an opportunity
for the students to talk about things that
made them feel unsafe. “I think a lot of
adults with disabilities feel unsafe when
they’re not respected,” says Ruth. One man
approached Ruth a couple weeks before,
saying, “Ruth, when are we going to make
our warrior figures? I’m having some issues
in my life and I would really like to get
going on that project.”
Art is such a communicative tool. “I believe
this gentleman was very frustrated with
someone and wanted to express ‘I’m trying
to tell you what I need and you’re not
listening,’” says Ruth. “Often students are
eager to give their artwork to a caregiver or
parent as a way of saying ‘See how capable
I am’ or returning love they’ve been given.”
Making art has its practical side, too, building
essential skills. “You learn how to measure,
you learn about proportion, you learn
about size and scale or how to use scissors.
And there’s always a little more math than
people think,” according to Ruth.
Besides being an accomplished artist with
a B.F.A. from Minneapolis College of Art
and Design, with studies in theatre arts,
experience in film production and
a penchant for large-scale public art, Ruth
brings powerful creativity and intuitive sensitivity to her outreach work. “I just
Once Michèle introduced mandalas, circular
art forms that in Hindu or Buddhist practice
are meditative representations of the universe.
She brought some patterns for them to
color. It was not successful. A month later,
she introduced music, encouraging the class
to relax, enjoy the beautiful rhythms and let
their imaginations go as they painted. One
after the other, what did they create?
Mandalas! It was the most natural thing
in the world, but had to come from within.
During one Presbyterian Homes memory
care art class, an elegant and very
proper fellow of 97 years was listening
to Artist-Instructor Michèle Coppin talk
about France and Matisse as she showed
them colorful paintings she did for her
thesis. All of a sudden he started
speaking French! He was as startled as
everyone else, saying, “I didn’t know!”
but spent the rest of the session happily
tossing words and phrases back and
forth with Michèle. It was gone again
by the next class but that moment,
triggered by the art, was magical.
“I find the connection between art and
memory fascinating,” says Michèle, who
received her M.F.A. from the Pratt Institute in New York. “They tell me they don’t
know how to paint, but then they get into
it and they can take off on their own and
be extremely creative!” While Michèle
loves the artwork her students produce, she
knows that sometimes it’s not the art that
is important. “I wish someone would come
in and take photos of them before the class
and after, because physically they stand
up a little straighter, their cheeks are rosy,
they’re more animated and active,” she says
with delight. Her art classes pull seniors
She bides her time as they’re welcomed by
a representative from Project for Pride in
Living, Inc., a local nonprofit dedicated to
helping Twin Cities low-income residents
achieve self sufficiency. “Programs like ours
expose the children to materials they rarely
see,” says Geneviève. “I love to bring clay
into their world because it’s something they
rarely get to work with. It also makes their
project more permanent and that permanency
gives them a source of pride.”
Geneviève teases and cajoles the group a
little bit to get them started, sharing a sports
sock filled with corn starch (which keeps
clay from sticking to molds). She tells the
students it is her son’s dirty, stinky sock
filled with toe dust. A few giggles bubble
up. Soon attitudes soften to smiles as the
kids start to touch and form the material.
Once they’re into it, you can’t get the clay
away from them!
see the person first. We’re all the same
in terms of what we need and want,” says
Ruth, adding, “I think it’s easy for some to
see adults with disabilities as childlike, but
they have a mature understanding of life.”
She helps everyone participate, even those
with significant physical challenges, by
breaking each project down to clear steps.
The process of making art and building
community is a priority for Ruth. “I always
say if one person isn’t done, then nobody is
done. We’re all working together,” she says,
adding with a laugh, “and that goes
for clean up, too!”

a small room with 5- and 6-year olds,
their “this is going to be lame” attitude
is palpable. But Artist-Instructor
Geneviève Chamberland has brought
a secret weapon: clay.
Describing her students as resilient and
courageous, Michèle reflects, “It must be
scary to not know where you are most of
the time or not recognize the people who
are around you. Yet they have humor, they
are smiling, they’re friendly and sweet
and so full of kindness.” To ensure their
enjoyment and success with their projects,
Michèle shows them each tiny step, getting
to eye level to make it personal and engaging. She encourages family and loved ones
to get involved to enjoy the connection and
memories that come up as well as make
some new ones to cherish.
“We’re all headed in that direction of old
age,” Michèle reminds us. “It benefits the
whole society really to treat our older
people well, with dignity and respect.
Programs like these elevate the quality of life.”

Being a mom herself and not of this country
(she’s Canadian), Geneviève finds common
ground and connection with her students.
They range from ages 5 to 16. Most are
refugees from Africa, many from Somalia,
all are struggling financially. “I believe art
helps kids realize that despite struggles –
at school, in the community or with their
family – they can create something beautiful.
Out of the most primal material – dirt –
they create something of value,” says
Geneviève. “There’s value in their art and
that means there is value in them.”
Some of the students can be pretty rowdy,
but Geneviève can be a pretty tough teacher.
“I can also be very loving,” she says. As she
introduces a project, showing a demo piece
that she’s made herself, she considers the
class, sizing up who needs a little more
engagement in the experience, and gives
them the biggest jobs. “They feel special
being chosen for responsibility and it gets
them more involved in the experience.”

She makes sure they know that the
class is a safe environment where they
can relax and create.
Geneviève loves her Outreach work
because she knows that when children
feel the freedom of creating, they
realize they can become winners
despite present challenges. “It feels like
art gives them a little pat on the back
that they will remember when it’s a
rough road.”

Thank you to all of the talented artistinstructors and community partners
who make these programs possible.
Outreach is a vital aspect of the work
of the Minnetonka Center for the
Arts, and one of the most gratifying.
If you want to support our Outreach
A depth of thanks to the Minnesota
State Arts Board. This activity is made
possible by the voters of Minnesota
through a grant from the Minnesota
State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative
appropriation from the arts and
cultural heritage fund.
What makes Outreach possible?
The stories above were supported by a $50,000
2011 and $100,000 2012 Arts Access Grant from
the Minnesota State Arts Board (MSAB). Last year,
almost 30 exceptional instructors helped reach
1,639 people at little or no cost who otherwise
would have minimal access to art.
This work proved foundational, because
recently the MSAB awarded a $142,741 2013 Arts
Learning Grant to continue and expand our visual
arts programs with these partners so we may
continue to reach adults with special needs, seniors
with memory loss and at-risk children and teens.
Under the leadership of Holly Nelson, Adult
Program Director, and Nicole Buchholz, Children
and Youth Program Director, programs are
underway for 2014.
The best way to reach underserved audiences
is to work through the social service organizations
that already serve them. The organizations listed
to the right have been exceptional partners,
enabling the Minnetonka Center for the Arts
to deliver quality arts programming to individuals
who will benefit the most. Thank you! Many
of these partnerships go back 20 years or more!
We hope all will continue to flourish long into
the future.

Ceramic sculpture is fun and satisfying
to create. Bring in your project idea and
the instructor will help guide you to its
successful completion. Students may
construct sculptures with varying scale and
proportions, creating realistic or abstract
forms. Demonstrations and individual
instruction will be provided to allow
students to pursue their own direction.
All skill levels welcome.

CREATIVE TOOLS FOR
CAREGIVERS
This class will introduce a series of drawing,
painting and collage projects that caregivers
may create with their loved one. Primarily
designed for caregivers of people with
Alzheimer’s disease, this class is relevant
for most caregiving situations. Creating
art together can help retrieve memories,
communicate emotions and stimulate
conversations, breaking the silence and
isolation that can accompany memory loss
or illness. Art has the power to strengthen
relationships and improve the quality of
life for family members and their loved
one. Open to all caregivers, whether family,
friends or professionals.
CERAMIC SCULPTURE
This class is for beginners and advanced
potters alike. Beginners will be introduced
to the potter’s wheel as well as handbuilding.
Experienced students will work with the
instructor to develop their own work. High
fire, raku and soda firing will be explored.

AWESOME ACCESSORIES
This workshop is an opportunity to learn
the art of primitive rug hooking while
making a fun 3 D sheep or snowman.
Primitive rug hooking is an art which
employs a simple hook and wide strips
of wool. With the hook in one hand above
the foundation material and the strip of
wool held beneath in the other hand, the
hook is used to pull up loops from the
strip. When repeated many times, the
loops close together and form the surface
of a rug or in the case of this workshop,
a 3 D sheep or snowman. In the first class
we will hook the piece and in the second
class we will assemble it. You will pick your
own colors for the sheep and design your
own face and hat for the snowman.

the Minnetonka Center for the Arts and began
taking classes in pottery, and later, fused glass.
Though her B.A. is in Music Education, Diane has
discovered that she enjoys teaching art much more
than teaching music.
Donna Rice has been working with glass for
more than 30 years. With a B.F.A. in glass and
metal from Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh,
she’s been a glass blower, cold worker, lamp
worker and carver before discovering a technical
passion for the art of glass casting, a method she’s
been progressively advancing for fifteen years.
Ellen Richman is a well-recognized contemporary
abstract painter. With a B.F.A. from the University
of Minnesota, Ellen’s award-winning paintings have
been widely exhibited. Her work is found in
collections throughout the U.S. and Mexico and is
currently represented at Circa Gallery in Minneapolis
and Thomas Masters Gallery in Chicago.
Constance Saunders is a fiber artist who
began her art as a child designing her own clothes,
later learning free-form machine embroidery and
creating Fiber Impressions, an entire image sewn in
thread from a photograph. In Florence, Italy, she
learned to paint silk. Constance has exhibited her
work throughout the Twin Cities and beyond.
Alan Shefland began his artist’s journey young,
shooting and developing photos of his neighborhood and its residents, selling a few to cover costs.
He honed his visual skills becoming a Hollywood
film editor working on TV commercials, shows
and features, including many award-winning
shows. After moving to Minnesota, he became
a student and later teacher at the Minnetonka
Center for the Arts where he has often exhibited
his photography.
David R. Smith enjoys the challenge of working
with watercolors and has studied the art extensively
in the U.S. and China. He exhibits nationally,
earning recognition regionally and nationally
(including top honors with the Minnesota Watercolor
Society). As a certified and experienced teacher,
David works with all ages and is currently teaching
students with special needs in the Eden Prairie
schools.
Eric Suardi is a professional graphic designer
who has been teaching Anime/Manga and Comic
Art classes for two years. He received his B.F.A.
from the University of Minnesota-Duluth,
specializing in digital and traditional media. With
a passion for working with others, he has proudly
shared his diverse knowledge to children and
adults all over Minnesota.
Foster Willey, Jr. received his B.F.A. from
Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich.,
and has studied at the Naguib School of Sculpture
in Chicago. With a studio in northeast Minneapolis,
he works in stone, bronze, concrete, wood and
steel, exhibiting extensively and earning several
commissions and public art installations. He has
been a sculpture instructor with the Minnetonka
Center for the Arts for more than ten years.
Dorothy Odland holds both a B.F.A. and M.F.A.
from the University of Minnesota. Through her
career she has been an exhibitor, award winner,
show juror and gallery lecturer for 22 years at
Walker Art Center. She is also a founding member
and mentor with the Women’s Art Registry of
Minnesota (the WARM). Her work is found in
many corporate and private collections.
Arlene Zimmerman studied at the Minnetonka
Center for the Arts from 1993 to 2002 and worked
as a teaching assistant from 1995 to 2002. Her
work has been exhibited at galleries and at the
Museum of American Art. Her sculptural figures
celebrate ethnicity and the uniqueness of being
a woman permeates her work.
Lee Persell is the Ceramics Studio Manager for
the Minnetonka Center for the Arts. She exhibits
in shows and galleries throughout the Midwest.
She has extensive experience in ceramics and
design consulting, and has taught at the Minnetonka
Center for the Arts for more than 15 years.
