Library Hours The library now offers two free streaming services, providing Alsip-Merrionette Park Library cardholders with immediate Internet access to movies, music and books. Library Closed Hoopla Digital provides FREE movies, TV shows, music, audiobooks, eBooks and comics. Hoopla is quick, easy and free. Once you set up a Hoopla account online or download the app, you will have immediate access to 300,000 titles from your smartphone, tablet and computer. Borrow up to 10 titles per calendar month. New content is added weekly so be sure to visit often. Freegal, the library’s music download service, provides two hours of music-streaming per day. Freegal offers 9 million songs from 28,000 labels, including Sony Music. Next time you’re looking for fabulous free content to stream or download, don’t forget your library has a lot to offer! 15th Annual Food and Toy Drive The library is proud to sponsor our Annual Food and Toy Drive. Please bring new unwrapped toys, non-perishable food items or monetary donations to the library. All donations will be distributed by Worth Township to area families in need. They’re simple to make, even if you have no experience making jewelry. Chocolate-Dipped Strawberries Tuesday, February 9 at 6 pm Make a sweet for your sweet! Join us to dip strawberries in melted chocolate, add a variety of toppings, and put them in gift boxes. Divergent Book Discussion and Movie Trip The new Divergent movie, Allegiant, releases on March 18th, and here’s your chance to score some free tickets! Anybody who visits our Divergent book discussion will be given free passes to the movie! FAFSA Assistance Saturday, April 30 at 1 pm Henna Tattoos Thursday, April 21 at 6 pm Add a little ink to your look with Henna Tattoos! This is a great chance for you to add intricate designs to your arms without fear! The FAFSA deadline for 2016 is July 30th, so stop by the library for help filling out the application to receive financial aid for college. TAG (Teen Advisory Group) Teen Tech Week First Thursday of every month at 7 pm March 6-12, 2016 Do you want to show off your leadership skills? Can’t get enough volunteering? Or are you simply looking for a way to be more involved with other teens at the library? There’s always something new and kids in grades 6 and up can be a part of it. It’s a quick and easy way to make a warm, cozy infinity scarf using nothing more than your arms. In no time at all you’ll be ready to run out the door wearing your new scarf. Eisenhower High School Holiday Concert Sunday, December 6 at 2 pm The Eisenhower High School Holiday Concert is sure to wow fans of festive music, as jazz band and chorus performs seasonal favorites. Open registration begins Saturday, January 23 for all others. Programs start the week of January 31 and run through March 5. Preschool Programs Preschool Pals Toddler Art Tuesdays from 10-10:30 am Thursdays at 10-10:30 am Independent 3 to 5 year olds, not yet in Kindergarten. Join us for a half hour of stories, songs, and more to build early literacy skills to take the chill off these winter mornings. Ages 2 to 5 years old with caregiver. Toddlers will explore activities that engage the senses and help them understand the world around them. Bouncing Babies Alphabet Stew Drop in Family Music Wednesdays from 10-10:30 am Wednesdays from 2-2:30 pm Fridays from 10-10:30 am Birth to 23 months with caregiver. Get ready to sing, clap, bounce, and listen to nursery rhymes and simple stories with your baby. Ages 2 to 4 years with caregiver. Books, rhymes, fingerplays, and activities are centered on letters of the alphabet. Ages 5 and under with caregiver. Songs, games, and musical adventures for caregivers and little ones. Limited to the first 24 children and their caregivers. After Dark Art Snowy Stories Tinkering & Technology Mondays at 6:30 pm Wednesdays from 6:30-7 pm Grades 1 and up. Our Monday night art class is back! Fun projects will include watercolor and salt snowflake paintings, winter tree collages, and more. Please join us to create something special this winter. Ages birth to 6 years old with caregiver. Grab the family and come on out to the library on Wednesday evenings for stories, sensory table activities, crafts, games, and more. Join us for this low-key welcoming program. No pre-registration required, just drop in when you can. We’ll continue exploring the world of littleBits Electronics and add some new technology projects to our Thursday nights. Kids Programs Registration is required for all programs unless otherwise noted. Saturday Specials Afterschool Programs The Mad Scientists Club Mondays from 4-4:30 pm Grades 2-5. This program will put the Fizz, Boom, Bang into exploring the fun side of science in this hands-on program. Get ready to go green! Eco-Kids Tuesdays from 4-4:30 pm Checkmate Saturdays from 10-11 am Grades 1 and up. Learn new moves and test your skills! Our instructor will teach a new move each week to develop your competitive edge. Chess teaches concentration, focus, logic, and outcome, while promoting the STEM initiative. For all levels – beginners through experienced. Grades K to 5. We’re so happy to continue our Eco Club throughout this winter. We hope to inspire the children to become life-long environmental protectors. Winter Wednesdays Wednesdays from 4-4:30 pm Grades K to 5. It’s cold outside, but there’s fun and creativity inside! Join us for winter themed and Valentine projects with paper, paint, and more. Passport Club Thursdays from 4-4:30 pm Minecraft Meet-up Saturdays from 11:15-12:15 pm Grades 2 and up. Do you love Minecraft? Want to meet others who love it just as much as you? Join us at this club where we use the Minecraft server to create a safe and controlled environment for Minecraft enthusiasts. Because Library equipment will be provided, a Minecraft User Name is needed from you. February 20 & March 5 Grades K to 5. We will continue to travel the world without even leaving the library. Each week we will jet off to even more destinations and learn about their culture while making a craft, and listening to stories. Bingo Fridays from 4-4:30 pm Grades K to 5. Introduction to Windows 10 Thursday, Dec 10, 6:30-8 pm This lecture-based class will teach you about some of the new features available in Windows 10. See it in person; learn what’s different, and find out how to upgrade. You are welcome to bring your own Windows 10 device, and ask questions after the lecture. Beginning Microsoft Word Wednesdays, December 16 OR March 16, 10-11:30 am This session will introduce the fundamentals of Word: creating, saving, and printing, as well as entering and formatting text, copying/pasting, and inserting graphics. Basic computer skills required. Computer Basics Saturdays, January 9 OR February 13 OR March 12, 10-11:30 am Are you new to computers, or still trying to find your way around? Try this class which will cover the mouse, keyboard, and windows navigation skills: how to open/close windows, scroll, minimize, maximize, find menus and enlarge text. World Book provides up-to-date, accurate, authoritative information for preschoolers, younger kids, older students, advanced users, and Spanish speakers (Enciclopedia Estudiantil Hallazgos). Included are teacher resources, including correlations from World Book content to state curriculum, links to lesson plans and activities, and other useful tools for parents and educators. You’ll find timelines, preschool learning tools and more! To access World Book Online click the RESEARCH DATABASES tab on the library’s website, alsiplibrary.info. Be sure to check out World Book Online, it’s the same great encyclopedia you remember plus a whole lot more. Homework Help! If you or your child are feeling overwhelmed by homework assignments, rest assured, there is help available. Library card holders can access LIVE tutors through Brainfuse, found on the library’s website, alsiplibrary.info. Just click on the database tab and scroll down to Brainfuse. Bi-lingual tutors are available every day from 2-10 pm to chat with you online. You can access this program from home or from the library. Kids Winter Reading Program Come in from the cold and join our special five-week reading program this winter. Just for reading you can get great prizes and coupons!
