champion”
San Diego Gas & Electric
(SDG&E) named Poseidon Water
an “Energy Champion” for 2016.
Poseidon was selected as the
Water Energy Nexus Champion
for their investments in, and commitment to, sustainability and
energy efficiency at the Claude
“Bud” Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant.
To reduce energy consumption at the desalination plant,
Poseidon employs 144 stateof-the-art energy recovery
devices that are able to save an
estimated 146 million kilowatthours (kWh) of energy per year
and reduce carbon emissions
by 42,000 metric tons annually
– a saving roughly equivalent
to removing 9,000 passenger
vehicles from the roads.
The operation of the Carlsbad
desalination facility does not
generate greenhouse gas emissions of any kind; however, Poseidon’s precedent-setting Energy
Minimization and Greenhouse
Gas Reduction Plan offsets air
emission’s associated with the
plant’s purchase of electricity – a
first for a large-scale water treatment plant in California. In the
first six months of operations
the Carlsbad Desalination Plant
used 2 million pounds of recycled
CO2 in the water treatment process, which converted the CO2 to
harmless compounds and prevented an equivalent amount of
CO2 from escaping to the atmosphere. Additionally, Poseidon
is developing 66 acres of new
coastal wetlands and has invested
$1 million to plant trees after the

ive North County cities
– Carlsbad, Escondido,
Oceanside, San Marcos
and Vista – make up the
dream team for innovation along the 78 corridor.
These forward-thinking
cities are working
together to boost
economic prosperity while simultaneously attracting
and retaining talent
in the region.
The 78 corridor
is home to
over 20,000
companies
and businesses that employ more
than 277,600 workers.
Businesses, big and small,
need a pool of highly-skilled
and educated workers to
succeed. By investing in
their workforce, these five
North County cities are
ensuring that current and
future business enterprises
will remain competitive and
thrive in a changing global
marketplace.
The educational institutions on the 78 Corridor
are committed to providing individuals with quality
and affordable education. In
addition, they are developing
training programs to create
a talent pipeline to meet
employer’s needs.
Carlsbad’s partnership
with MiraCosta College is
a prime example of how businesses, educational institutions, civic and community
leaders are joining forces to
place anywhere between 12
to 16 weeks in a skills-based
environment,” said Kevin
Pointer, management analyst
for the City of Carlsbad’s economic development office.
Some of the featured programs include: Machinist
Technology, Engineering Technician, Certified Anti-Terrorist
Force Protection Specialist and
Veterinary Assistant.
MiraCosta is currently
working with ViaSat, a
Carlsbad-based global
broadband services and technology company, to start an
electronic assembly class that
enhance career and workforce talent development
both in the city and along
the 78 corridor.
MiraCosta opened the
Technology Career Institute in city-owned property in March of 2015. The
programs offered at TCI are
designed to train skilledworkers for jobs in high-tech
manufacturing, maritime
technology and bio-tech
manufacturing.
“The courses are accelerated, hands-on, and take

will help meet ViaSat’s hiring
needs, according to Pointer.
Similarly, Bio, Tech and
Beyond, the city’s life sciences incubator, is supporting local life sciences firms
by creating jobs and
boosting the local
economy. The incubator is located on
a 6,000 square-foot
building on Faraday
Avenue.
“Bio, Tech and Beyond
is made for scientists
interested
in testing out
their new ideas in an environment where they can
rent lab space and forego
the immediate capital cost of
having to invest in their own
lab space,” said Pointer. “The
incubator currently houses
20 startups and it has created
over 44 full-time jobs. We are
happy to see the incubator’s
successes.”
Another
institution
expanding access to indemand training in the
North County is Cal State
San Marcos. The university
is partnering with the Vista
Community Clinic to launch a
six-month Medical Assistant
Training program in the fall.
The program is designed
for people looking to jumpstart their career in the
medical field. Students
will acquire the training to collect lab tissue
and specimens, and
assist with administrative
duties such as scheduling,

Earlier this year I made a
commitment to be the Chairman of the Board who spends
time listening to our members.
My endeavor to meet with
board members, new Chamber
members, and some familiar
faces in the Chamber community has been paying off. I have
gained a lot of insight into why
businesses are members of
the Chamber, what value they
hope to get from their membership, and what they enjoy
most about the Chamber. In
no particular order here are the
top 10 things that I am hearing
during these meetings.
• Being a Chamber member
keeps me connected to
what’s happening in the
community and gives me a
conduit to participate in the
future of the community.
• Access to politicians and
other people of influence
that I might not normally
have access to.
• Building referral relationships with businesses that
are good alliance partners
for my client base.

DEB BEDDOE
Chairman of the Board
CARLSBAD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
• I learn so much about my
business strategies by
talking to other Chamber
members.
• Being nominated for
awards and receiving them
gives us a reason to reach
out to our client base with
news about our company.
• Our company has marketing funds to support
community efforts and
the Chamber allows me
to support the efforts that
contribute to business and
economic growth.
• First Friday Breakfast is by
far everyone’s favorite event.
• Advertising in the journal and other Chamber
advertising opportunities is
more affordable than other
types of public relations
activities that we could
spend money on.
• When I signed up to
become a Chamber
member, I never realized I
would be meeting some of
my best friends in life.
• Compared to all of the
other chambers in the
region this Chamber is by
far the most professional,
well run, and connected
Chamber I’ve been to.
I’d like to thank those 26
Chamber members that have
taken time out of their busy
schedules to meet with me in
the last couple of months to
enjoy a cup of coffee, I so sincerely appreciate your time
and your feedback.
For those of you who I
haven’t had the opportunity
to connect with yet, I hope we
have a chance soon. And if
you are a member and want
me to try your coffee shop,
please contact me! Keep up
the good work everyone!

Small Business
Awards create
buzz for your
business
There are many facets of how we
judge business success from profit
to market power. But in my opinion, a great way to be judged is by a
panel of experts who select the Best
of the Best in a variety of business
categories as will be the case in this
year’s Small Business Awards Luncheon on Friday, October 7.
According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, there were 28
million small businesses in 2011, and
small firms accounted for 63 percent
of the net new jobs created between
1993 and mid-2013. The question
is, what can small businesses do to
stand out from the crowd?
One of the easiest and most inexpensive ways for you to stand out
from your competitors is to win
industry awards. They are a way
to gain recognition for yourself,
your business and your company
website. Awards bring you more
traffic and they enhance your credibility as a business.
Three years ago the Chamber
decided to create a new awards platform to honor the best companies in
our biggest class of members, ninety
percent are under 50 employees.
This year we have eight categories:
1.New Small Business
2.Excellence in Professional
Services
3.Women-Owned Business
4.Sustainability
5.Community Impact
6.Employee Development
7.Best Marketing Practices
8. Workplace MVP
The luncheon will have testimonials on how the Chamber brought
companies to stability and success
and will provide an ideal stage for
each attendee to meet, greet and initiate feedback from experts in attendance. The program is an excellent
forum to honor your best employees
and customers too by having them
join us for lunch. You can fill out the
simple form on our website to enter.
It’s as simple as that and there are
no entry fees. Visit Carlsbad.org and
self-nominate today.
Remember marketing plans can
illustrate the power of your product
or service but an award from a panel of
judges is a powerful undeniable tool.

Visitor and retail sectors
continue to see investment
New investments in the
City of Carlsbad’s retail,
tourism and entertainment
industries are delivering
new leisure activities for
residents and visitors while
boosting the local economy.
The family-friendliest
project on the horizon is a
new LEGOLAND™ California Resort Hotel, the
theme park’s second. The new
three-story, 137,700 square
foot hotel will offer 230
rooms and 20 suites, all with
LEGO themes. LEGOLAND
California debuted in Carlsbad in 1999 and opened its
first hotel in April 2013. That
hotel has been such a success
that the park is proceeding
with plans for a second.
Not far from LEGOLAND, Grand Pacific
Resorts is building new
timeshares at its complex
along Grand Pacific Drive,
and plans to construct a
new 71-room Westin Hotel
and 36-unit timeshare on
an ocean-view site overlooking The Crossings at
Carlsbad golf course.
A unique project taking
shape near Grand Pacific
Resorts and LEGOLAND
is a new venture in urban
agriculture. The North 40
Urban Farm, just north of
the Flower Fields along Car
Country Drive, will feature
organically grown crops
where people can experience
food production from farm to

press and other producers,
and visitors will be able to
enjoy locally produced
foods right where they
were grown. The project,
which will include a wholesale floral trade center, is
slated to open in 2018.
While the North 40 Urban

CSUSM: Shaping our region’s leaders
California State University San Marcos is proud
to play a role in shaping
the lives of tomorrow’s
leaders. As the North
County region’s only fouryear institution of higher
learning, we’re dedicated
to not only preparing leaders, but also building great
communities and solving
critical issues.
The University’s enrollment surpassed 14,000 for
the first time in 2015-16 and
CSUSM conferred nearly
3,200 degrees and credentials at its 25th commencement ceremony in May,
making the Class of 2016 the
largest in University history.
And it was an impressive group of people who
received diplomas. In
the College of Education,
Health and Human Services (CEHHS), Jamaela
Johnson went from being
a bit of an introvert when
she arrived on campus to
a standout scholar who
transformed herself into an
engaged community advocate. Jamaela, who graduated with a bachelor’s in
human development, had
a long list of accomplishments at CSUSM, including
serving as vice president
of Student and University
Affairs and helping charter the University’s first
African-American Greek
organizations.
Jamaela wants to take the
skills she honed at CSUSM
and make a difference in
the world.
“My experience with the
various student organizations helped me discover
methods for mediating
social problems, responding to the needs of underrepresented groups, promoting social justice and
equity, and enacting social
change,” Jamaela said.
In the College of
Humanities, Arts, Behavioral and Social Sciences
(CHABSS), Petrona Gregorio is a living reminder
that anything is possible.
Petrona, who received
her bachelor’s in psychology, spent her early years
in Guatemala, an impoverished country with the
lowest literacy rate in Central America. She immigrated with her family to

Laureta Koxha’s (third from right) journey to CSUSM began in
1999 when she and her family were forced to flee their home
in Ferizaj, Kosovo, during the Serbian-Albanian War. A Dean’s
List student every semester, Laureta graduated with the
highest GPA in the Global Supply Chain Management option.

before returning to school
a decade later to renew her
commitment to learning.
Petrona transferred to
CSUSM from Palomar College in 2014 and impressed
her peers and professors
with her scholarly drive,
achievements and her
promise as a researcher.
“What I value the most is
helping out those in need
and encouraging young
children and adults to
pursue a higher education,”
she said.
In the College of Business
Administration, Laureta
Koxha’s journey to a bachelor’s in business administration, global supply chain
management, began in the
spring of 1999 when she
and her family were forced
to flee their home in Ferizaj,
Kosovo, during the SerbianAlbanian War. The family
found shelter in a refugee
camp before finding a home
in San Diego.
“When we got off the
plane, my father was
wearing one brown shoe,
one black shoe and had
only four U.S. dollars in his
pocket,” she said.
But Laureta’s parents
instilled the importance of a
higher education, hard work
and perseverance – and she
was on the Dean’s List every
semester at CSUSM.
In the College of Science
and Mathematics, German
Alberto Mendoza was a
first-generation college student who arrived at CSUSM
after serving four years in
the Marines, including one
year of combat duty in Iraq.
German, who received a
bachelor’s in biological sciences, worked in the laboratory of Julie Jameson, assistant professor of psychology,
as a research assistant.
“He has a true knack for
science along with a drive
that I find truly astonishing
for his age,” said Jameson,
who added she would place
him in the top 1 percent of
all the undergraduates she
has worked with, including during her time at The
Scripps Research Institute. “He is incredibly reliable and innovative in his
work, and I expect amazing
things in his future.”
All of us at CSUSM expect
amazing things from our
students and these graduates are typical of those we
work with every day. Their
stories provide inspiration on a daily basis as we
proudly prepare tomorrow’s leaders, build great
communities in the region
and solve critical issues that
impact us all.
Carlsbad switches to clean fuel
Carlsbad
recently
became one of the first
cities in California to switch
to a new, more environmentally friendly fuel that will
reduce greenhouse gas
emissions for the city’s
diesel vehicles by up to 70
percent.
The city buys it renewable diesel from Propel
Fuels – the state’s leading
retailer of low-carbon fuels
made from animal fats and
vegetable oil waste.
“Carlsbad has shown
strong leadership in sustainability and climate
action. Propel is excited to
help extend their vision to
their fueling program,” said
Rob Elam, CEO of Propel.
“This is how smart fleets
immediately reduce carbon
emissions and improve air
quality in the communities

they serve.”
Renewable diesel outperforms petroleum in
emissions, engine performance and value, providing cleaner and more
efficient combustion, as
well as significant reduction in harmful nitrogen
oxide ( NOx) and fine particulate (PM 2.5) emissions.
NOx and particulates are
directly linked to air quality in California, negatively
impacting children, people
with lung diseases and
driver health.
Carlsbad will run Diesel
HPR in a range of Fire
Department and Public
Works heavy-duty vehicles
including fire trucks, dump
trucks and vacuum trucks.
“Diesel HPR cleans the
air we breathe and reduces
the emissions from our
city vehicles,” said Steve
Hodges, Management Analyst for the City of Carlsbad
Public Works and General
Services. “Propel provides
access to the top low-carbon
fuel in the country, allowing us to share the health
and emissions benefits with
anyone living in or visiting
Carlsbad.”
According to the U.S.
Department of Energy’s
Alternative Fuels Data
Center, renewable diesel’s
high combustion quality
results in similar or better
vehicle performance compared to conventional
diesel, while California
Air Resources Board (ARB)
studies show that renewable diesel can reach up
to 80% greenhouse gas
reduction compared to
petroleum diesel.

Act FAST to treat stroke
Stroke happens when a
blood vessel that supplies
oxygen and nutrients to
the brain becomes blocked,
often by a blood clot that
travels from elsewhere in
the body. The longer the
vessel remains blocked,
the worse the damage may
be. Deprived of oxygen,
the brain tissue begins to
die, and the functions controlled by the dying areas—
such as speech, movement
or cognitive abilities—
can be severely and
irreversibly damaged. If enough of
the brain tissue dies,
the stroke will be
fatal.
Immediate
medical care
is critical to
prevent the
loss of brain
tissue. If
the blood
vessels
can be
opened
within
three to six
hours, there is a significant chance of recovery.
“A paradigm shift
in the way we manage
strokes has occurred during
the last two years,” said
Frank Coufal, M.D., neurosurgeon and co-director of
the Comprehensive Stroke
Center at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla.
“Our community should
be increasingly mindful of
this change so that they can
take advantage of the new
life-saving technologies
that are available.”
Know the
Symptoms
and Act
F.A.S.T.
The sooner
stroke is
identified
and
treated, the better the
chances for recovery. If
you suspect someone is
having a stroke, the American Heart Association/
American Stroke Association recommends using the
F.A.S.T. test:
FACE: Ask the person to
smile. Does one side of the
face droop?
ARMS: Ask the person to
raise both arms. Does one
arm drift downward?
SPEECH: Ask the person
to repeat a simple sentence.
Does the speech sound
slurred or strange?
TIME: Time is crucial with
stroke treatment. If you
observe any of these signs -even if the symptoms don’t
last --call 911 and get the
person to the nearest stroke
center or hospital as soon as
possible. Make a note of the
time when the first symptoms appeared, as this can
be important to treatment.
In addition to F.A.S.T.
symptoms, other stroke
signs can include sudden
confusion, problems
understanding speech,
vision problems in one or
both eyes, dizziness or

problems with movement
or coordination, and severe
headache.
New Treatment May
Reverse Damage
New proven treatments
can minimize or even
reverse stroke damage. A
procedure known as an
embolectomy may be used
on patients who have had a
major stroke and are treated
within six hours of the onset
of the stroke. Due to the
severity of the stroke, these
patients have suffered a significant disability, such as
weakness on one side of the
body, problems talking or
seeing, or loss of movement.
In such cases, the physician
may be able to insert a long,
thin tube called a catheter
through the patient’s groin,
direct it up to the blocked
blood vessel, and deploy a
type of stent that immediately opens the blood vessel
and attaches to the clot. The
physician is then able to
remove the clot and immediately restore blood flow to
that area of the brain.
“I have seen patients who
come in having had devastating strokes – they can’t
walk, they can’t talk, they
can’t see on one side – and
physicians use this device,”
said Mary Kalafut, M.D.,
neurologist and co-director of the Comprehensive
Stroke Center at Scripps
Memorial Hospital La Jolla.
“The blood flow is restored
and they are completely
back to normal. This is very
exciting technology.”

A tiny device – about half
the size of a pinkie finger
– implanted just beneath
the skin of the chest can
monitor a person’s heartbeat continuously for up
to three years to detect a
condition known as atrial
fibrillation (Afib), which
causes the heart to beat
erratically and is a leading cause of stroke. Often,
patients with Afib don’t
know they have it because
it comes and goes, and
may not be active during a
routine physical. By monitoring patients for several
months, this device enables
physicians to identify Afib
and, if necessary, prescribe
blood-thinning medication
to prevent blood clots and
reduce stroke risk.
Like other types of cardiovascular conditions,
stroke risk can be reduced
by not smoking, getting
regular exercise, and eating
a heart-healthy diet.

Q&A with Benjamin Churchill: Goals, Vision, Challenges
BY LESLIE LUNA
An enthusiastic leader with 20 years of
experience in public schools, alternative schools and international schools,
Dr. Benjamin Churchill is settling into
his position as the new superintendent
of the Carlsbad Unified School District.
The 43-year-old has been on the job for
a month and he’s looking forward to
developing strong relationships with
the Carlsbad community. In his new
role, Churchill will oversee 16 schools
with more than 11,000 students.
Chamber staff learned Churchill’s
reason for wanting this position and
his priorities for the district’s future.
What drew you to this position?
My wife and I dreamed about moving
to Southern California for some time.
About a year ago, I started keeping
my eye on superintendent vacancies
in the San Diego County area. I was
thrilled to learn about the opportunity
in Carlsbad, as it is an excellent district
in a beautiful city with many activities
for families. My kids have been to the
beach just about every day since we
arrived earlier this month, and we’ve
all quickly fallen in love with Carlsbad.
I continue to be impressed with the district, and I look forward to supporting
the already excellent work underway
in Carlsbad Unified.
What will you miss the most
about Illinois?
I’ll miss family and friends, but just
about everyone I know is now planning
a vacation to Carlsbad, so I’m confident we’ll have lots of visitors. I’ll miss
the Cubs, but I’ll be able to see them
at least once each year as they come
through Petco Park. I will not miss the
responsibility of closing schools due to
snowstorms or cold weather.
Carlsbad Unified is recognized as
one of the highest achieving school
districts in the county. How do you
plan to continue that?
I’m looking forward to working
with staff to continue the great things
already in place. I’m also looking forward to finding ways to make systematic improvements that will benefit
students in all 16 of our schools. As
an instructional leader, I’m interested
in working with teachers and staff to
learn about the challenges they face
in maintaining high levels of achievement, and in finding ways to support
teachers and staff to continue their
excellent work.
You’re particularly interested in
classroom technology integration,
kindergarten readiness, workforce
development, and career pathways
for all students. How do you see your
role implementing these topics?
As superintendent, it is my role to
help establish and sustain a shared
vision for what we expect our students
to know and be able to do. Our Graduate Profile is an excellent resource
for focusing our collective work, as it
defines the qualities of prepared graduates as effective communicators and
collaborators; lifelong learners; critical thinkers; college and career ready
scholars; ethical and responsible citizens; and self-directed individuals.
As a unified school district, we are
fortunate to be able to work with students from preschool through high
school; I believe we are responsible
for ensuring that every graduate
has viable opportunities after high
school, whether they choose to attend
college or trade school, to enter the
workforce, or to serve in the military.
I also believe that we can have the
greatest impact on learners at the preschool, kindergarten, and elementary
levels, and that we have a responsibility
to make sure every student is ready
to meet or exceed the expectations of
their grade level by the end of each
school year. It is no secret that I believe
schools can help to achieve some of
these goals, but it is important to note
that classroom technology is only one
small part of a well-rounded education
experience for our students. As superintendent, I’ll work with teachers, staff,
parents, and other stakeholders to continue to create amazing opportunities
for each and every one of our students.
What will be the biggest hurdles
to getting these plans into action?
I don’t yet anticipate any major hurdles; throughout this summer and fall
I will continue to learn as much as
possible about the people, history, traditions and expectations of Carlsbad
Unified. Job number one for me right
now is to develop strong relationships.
Where senior
managers become
global leaders.

Tailoring to the learner
What is quality education? Ask five different

role (parent, teachers, student, or general public), and
you will get five different

schools view a quality
and personalized education as one that begins
with the learner. We are of
the mindset that learning

The parent and student,

no two learning plans are

St. Patrick touts new state-of-the-art campus
Catholic schools offer
academic excellence and
faith-filled learning for
students nationwide, offering parents an alternative
choice in education.
According to the NCEA
(National Catholic Educational Association),
“National test scores,
high school graduation
rates, college attendance
and other data show that
Catholic schools frequently
outperform schools in
both the public and private sectors.”St. Patrick
Catholic School Carlsbad
opened in 1962 as a result
of the School Building Fund
begun by parishioners in
1960. Enrollment was 181
students in grades 1-7.
In contrast, the enrollment for academic year
2015- 2016 was 465 students. A needs assessment
in 2009 determined that
the original school required
renovation. A Master Plan
was developed for the
entire campus and a capital
campaign was launched in
2010 to fund the church
and school projects.
Construction of the new
17,000 sq ft building began
in September 2015 and
includes: new classrooms
for grades 3-8, a library, a
computer and science lab,
and restrooms. Meantime,
renovation of the 1960’s
building began in June 2016
and includes: six classrooms, grades K-12,a new
music and language room,
and ADA restrooms.
A new Administration
Building addition of 1,291
sq ft will connect the renovated and new buildings.
In addition, a new field
and basketball courts will
be built. The new buildings are scheduled to open
this September with total
completion this fall.

Military men salute Trojan close-knit network
When DJ Fuller MBA ’13
began researching executive MBA options, he knew
he was looking for something unique: a highly
ranked program in a convenient location with an
alumni network that could
rival the tight-knit loyalty
he had experienced as a
United States Marine. He
found it at USC Marshall.
“The EMBA program was
top five, which was important, and the San Diego
location was key,” says
Fuller, who at the time was
an AH-1W Cobra pilot and
weapons and tactics instructor based at Camp Pendleton.
“But just as important was
the draw
of
this
incredible global
n e t wo r k .
It was one
of the few
groups of
alumni
I’ve seen FULLER
that takes care of its people
the way my fellow Marines
would take care of me.”
USMC Staff Sgt. Larry
Schmill MBA ’13, also
stationed at Camp Pendleton, was similarly
impressed. “I looked at
a lot of EMBA programs,
and I felt that Marshall’s
offered the right platform
to develop business leaders,” he recalls. “It begins
with the Trojan Family; in
the family environment,
everyone truly cares about
your success, and I felt
Marshall would devote the
time and effort to ensure
I was able to transition
from military to civilian
and ultimately thrive.”
Both men leveraged their
degrees from USC Marshall
to great effect – Schmill, as
an investment banking
associate at Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Fuller
as director of the Office of
the CEO at Livingston International, North America’s
premier company focused
on customs brokerage and
compliance.

The best athletes in the
world rely on coaches to
help them improve their
game, reach their potential and play at their best.
However, you don’t need
to be an all-star athlete
to benefit from having
another person in your
corner who wants to
help you succeed.
While you’re the one
who’s responsible for
your business, having
a coach provide
advice, accountability and
motivation when
you need it most
will help you stay true to
what you want to achieve.
There are many benefits
to having a coach on your
side; here are a few:
1
Stay on track.
Although you may
have set ambitious goals
in January when you were
full of motivation, by
midyear, you may be busy
or overwhelmed, and may
have forgotten all about
the goals you set earlier.
A coach can prevent
this from happening by
encouraging you when you
reach each milestone, and
holding your feet to the
fire when you’re beginning
to veer off track.
4
Give you unbiased
advice. A coach is a
sounding board when you
need it most and offers
an unbiased and unique
perspective to help you
approach a problem from
another angle.
5
2
Help with goals.
A coach uses your
strengths and successes
to help you create challenging goals. They’ll
help you review your
numbers and set new
goals sure to drive your
business forward.
3
Hold you accountable. When you
commit to doing something, your coach will
make sure you get it done,
no excuses. They know
the only way to reach
your goals is to make
sure you do what you
say you’re going to, and
they’ll ensure you stay
committed.
Motivatation. A
coach will keep
you focused and
motivated to reach
your goals. They’ll
encourage you
with their words
of wisdom and
provide support
to keep you on the path to
success.
Legendary football coach,
Tom Landry said, “The secret
to winning is constant, consistent management.” The
best way to accomplish this
is with the help of a coach.

Independence, active
learning & collaboration
Montessori education
offers children opportunities
to develop their potential as
they step out into the world
as engaged, competent,
responsible, and respectful
citizens with an understanding and appreciation that
learning is for life.
Village Montessori School
offers an education which is
focused on the potential and
interests of the child. Active
learning through handson activities and exercises
rather than “book learning”
is emphasized.
In individual lessons, students are taught how to use
each piece of work; once the
work is mastered, the students
are free to decide which work
they would like to use uninterrupted. Students are supported
in becoming active seekers of
knowledge. Every teacher at
Village Montessori is specially
trained in the philosophy and
methods of Maria Montessori,
which means they recognize,
respect, and appreciate the
uniqueness of each and every
child. Given the freedom and
support to question, probe
deeply, and to make connections, Montessori students
become confident, enthusiastic, self-directed learners. They
are able to think critically, work
collaboratively, and act boldly.
They are prepared for the 21st
century.

“We worked hand-in-hand with
the Vista Community Clinic to
develop the curriculum and the
clinic is allowing us to use one of
their facilities for classes,” said
Laura Segall, Marketing Director for
CSUSM Extended Learning. “One
of our priorities is to partner with
organizations to develop programs
like this to prepare area residents
for employment in the region.”
Similarly, National University is increasing access to higher
education through integration
of online learning. The quality,
accessible and flexible education
format makes the institution ideal
for those individuals looking to
expand their skills while holding
a part-time or full-time job.
The Carlsbad campus is known
for hosting the National University
Golf Academy with its state-of-theart swing lab and the Performance
Psychology Lab catering to the needs
of the Action Sports Manufacturing
industry in Carlsbad.
Following the slew of terrorists attacks at home and abroad,
there’s been a demand for training in security and emergency
management. A popular degree
offered at the Carlsbad campus is
the Master of Science in Homeland Security and Emergency
Management. School officials say
many of the students enrolled in
the program are ex-military. More
than 15,000 active duty service
members transition out of active
duty service in San Diego each
year; so it’s no surprise many
want to remain in the security
and emergency field when they
transition into civilian life.
National University was the first
university in San Diego to be recognized by the National Security
Agency and Department of Homeland Security as a national center of
academic excellence for their Master
of Science degree in Cybersecurity
and Information Assurance.
Drawn from the region’s most
innovative companies, USC
Marshall Executive MBA offers students an opportunity to contribute
to their companies’ growth from
the get-go.
The 22-month program, designed
for senior managers looking to get
into higher level management positions, is currently in its 11th year at
the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.
Classes meet every other week on
Fridays and Saturdays from 8:50
a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
School officials say about 40 professionals enroll in the program
each year, and 95 percent of those
who enroll end up graduating.
“You’re getting a USC Marshall
MBA in your own backyard at a
beautiful resort, at a convenient
time while keeping your job at
the same time,” said Julie Tilsner,
Editor at USC Marshall School
of Business. “It’s a very attractive offer. You become part of the
Trojan family network with more
than 85,000 Marshall alumni.”
With the abundance of diverse
educational options, North County
provides fertile ground for businesses to expand in the region
with confidence.

At the crossroads of professional development
If you have read my previous columns, you know I’m
a big champion of professional development.
It pays dividends in productivity, innovation and is
key in long-term success. I’d
like to emphasize that the
Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce is not a event-driven
chamber.
With dozens of professional development programs held throughout the
year, the Carlsbad Chamber is proud to offer area
employees access to affordable, quality training right
here in your community.
Our professional development opportunities help
you:

the Chamber provides
