Thank you for your time and devotion to GAC! Brandon Melton Brandon and his family have been GAC members since 1987. Brandon is a Colorado native, originally born in Boulder, and grew up in the South Denver area where he still lives today. However, he has spent several years of his life studying and traveling around the world. Brandon graduated in 2000 with a BS in Business from Fort Lewis College. He continues to travel extensively for his job, developing new restaurant concepts around the country for a local restaurant consulting firm. He recently got engaged to Kati Beeson, an administrator in the Cherry Creek School District, and also a GAC member. “I consider GAC an extension of home and I can't imagine my life without it. I look forward to many more years at GAC with my own family.” Marty Slaught Marty has been a member of GAC for ten years. He and his wife, Sharmel, have been married over 21 years and have three children. Marty holds a BA in Economics from the University of Colorado, Boulder and has been in commercial real estate for over 21 years. Marty first joined the tennis center, where he played tennis four times a week until he had knee surgery about eight years ago. He then joined the athletic club to rehabilitate his knee. He currently participates in group exercise classes, including BodyPump and cycling, in addition to using the weight room. Marty participated in his first multi-day bicycle ride, the Courage Classic, this past July. Marty also enjoys GAC for the opportunity to make new friends who have common interests. IT'S TIME TO BRAG ABOUT YOU….. Throughout the past two years, the club has gone through some significant changes; formation of the Metropolitan District, management changes in aquatics and group exercise, and remodels and upgrades throughout the club and tennis center. Regardless of the changes, there has been one significant factor that has remained….you! When I first walked through the doors of GAC, I was fascinated by the beauty of the building, the artwork, the cleanliness, and the feel of an “upscale”, one-of-a-kind health and fitness facility. I was then introduced to the staff members…warm smiles, friendly faces, a wealth of knowledge and focus on member satisfaction. Then I started meeting all of you…all 7,000+ of you! Three themes evolved for me as I describe our membership: 1) very physically fit, 2) social, and 3) high expectations. The average age of our membership at GAC is 46 years. If I were to measure the average age of our membership based on physical fitness, it would be significantly lower. Mark Held, Lynda Rehg, Hank Lewis, Elfi Grelle, Jan Sather, Lowell Bush, Mike Wilfley, and Lee Rose are some examples of members who utilize the club consistently and in a variety of ways. From the weight room to the pool, from Spinning® to Pilates, these members have chosen to remain young and healthy by eating well and working hard! I was participating in Power Fit last Friday and was talking to member, Jeff “Buzz” Wiepking. Buzz proceeded to tell me he has grown children and grandchildren. This man is fit! He does Power Fit weekly and tackles the gauntlet regularly! I never dreamed he was old enough to have grandkids. Our membership never ceases to amaze me! No matter where I look in the club, I see hardworking, determined individuals who are role models for the rest of the country. Remember, Colorado has been named the fittest state in the U.S., and our members at Greenwood Athletic Club are a big reason why! This past Saturday I attended a party at the home of one of our Thank you to the following members for referring a new member during May, June and July. May Mark Larson Vance Larimer Katy Rady Michael Rector Burt Choi Mitch Waters June Janice Smith Dan Cook Eric Manzares Connie Sowers William Ryan July Kristi Garner Bill Silvers Janie Wattlers Julie Godfrey Hilary Martin Phillip King Nick Hamilton Jane Cleveland Liz Jensen Brian Westin Judith Hirsh- Walker Jeanne Villella Lori Drew employees. There were a number of GAC members present who have been meeting socially for many years. A constant in speaking to them and many other members is that they belong to GAC because that's where their friends are. This club has become a home away from home for many people. Adele Gelfand, Jennifer Gore, Susan Johnson, Toritse Onuwaje, and Joanne Austin are all members of “the row” in the women's locker room. When you look at any of these lovely women, you know they work hard and take care of themselves but again, the driving force behind their presence at GAC is their friends! Lastly, our members have high expectations of themselves and Greenwood Athletic Club. You want the best and you deserve the best! All 7,000+ of you make Greenwood Athletic Club what it is today. New GAC Team Members must participate in a New Hire Orientation. During that meeting we discuss the importance of our membership and what you mean to us. In fact, without all of you, none of us would be here! A MEMBER IS……… • • • • • • • The most important person in our club Not dependent on us; we are dependent on them The purpose of our work Doing us a favor when they come into our club A partner in our business A human being with feelings A person who comes to us with their wants, needs, and desires; it is our job to satisfy them. Never have I been prouder to work in a place where the people I am here to serve motivate me to work harder and accomplish more. Thank you for being role models, for continuing to challenge us, and most importantly for choosing GAC as your place For Fitness. For Fun. For Life. Always have. Always will. I find time alone on a treadmill mind-numbing, but I love taking an EnergyZone® class. We all push together, suffer together and feel invigorated and accomplished together. I don't spend much time on my bike at home, but I will ride like the wind, climb a huge hill and push to my physical limits in a Spinning® class. I lift weights on a regular basis with my buddy Lana, but go beyond what I think I'm capable of with Oyvind holding my feet up and telling me I WILL do 5 more dips in PowerFit. I take on a BodySTEP class and time flies as we move from one great song and pattern to another. I find peace and stress relief that I didn't know was possible, in Cam's Mind Power class. Choosing to attend a class is making an appointment to exercise...an appointment with a commited instructor who's mission it is to motivate and inspire you. No matter who you are or what your goals are, we have a class for you. Call me and I will help you find your "appointment" to be the best you can be! “I have tried working out on my own but have always gone back to group exercise. I am now enrolled in "Booty Camp" (talk about stepping out of the box). This week I RAN a mile for the first time in my life with the help of the women around me! I am one who doesn't love to exercise but working with a group makes it more tolerable. The best part; when it's over and I am walking out of the club with a great feeling of accomplishment!” Mary Buntmann EME, Inc. When most people are asked to describe a personal training session, they think of someone lifting heavy weights in the weight room. When the fitness industry first began, it was dominated by those who wanted to be body builders or power lifters. These athletes had to lift “heavy” to achieve the results they wanted. Since these were the first leaders in the fitness industry, the programs that average people were given followed the body building type of workout. These workouts definitely address strength and power components; however, they fall short in some other areas of fitness. Today, through better knowledge of the human body and how it moves, we know that there are several components to being fit besides just building muscle mass. These components include: • Cardio-respiratory fitness - the efficiency of the heart / lungs and circulatory system in maintaining a given workload for a period of time • Muscular strength - the ability of the muscular system to lift a given load • Muscular endurance - the ability for the muscular system to lift a load or perform an action for a given amount of time • Joint range of motion - the ability to take a joint through several degrees of motion with control and in the absence of pain • Neuromuscular coordination - the ability of the nervous system to activate and control the muscular system through a specific action • Neuromuscular reaction - the ability of the neural/muscular system to quickly react to a given stimulus • Neuromuscular balance - the ability to actively (with movement) or statically (without movement) maintain postural balance and control while performing activities While most people are familiar with the first four components in the list, very few recognize the importance of the neuromuscular side of fitness. Any activity that requires coordination, balance and stability in multiple planes of movement and forces the neuromuscular system to adapt is an example of this type of exercise, also known as “functional exercise”. Using both functional and strength training to achieve your results is the key! So what does this mean for our members? As our population ages, we begin to see the overwhelming need for strength, coordination and balance. As we age and stop playing sports or activities such as football, tennis, and lacrosse, which require moving balance, we begin to lose those skills and abilities. Most seniors worry about falling or losing their balance. This is where performing balance/functional exercises increases confidence. Also, by doing these exercises regularly, we see a tremendous increase in the activation of core (abdominal/back) muscles, the main stabilizing factor in our bodies, and whose strength is the main key to preventing lower back pain. Personal trainers understand the importance and application of these functional exercises, and incorporate them into individuals' training programs. By integrating balance/reaction/coordination/strength exercises together, trainers improve their clients' overall health. Last, but not least, incorporating these varied fitness components into workout sessions helps eliminate boredom and keeps interest level high, putting the fun in function. 6 GIRLS ONLY BASKETBALL Prepare for season tryouts by improving your game. This combination workout of skills enhancing work and speed conditioning will improve your high school girls basketball play to the next level! Minimum of 5 and maximum of 10 people. START DATE: DAY/TIME: COST: September 20 Tuesday and Thursday, 4:30pm $200 Member/$240 Non-Member (4 weeks) “Oyvind (a.k.a. “Strong Skippy”) and Greenwood Athletic Club have been a real and tangible benefit to the entire Reifsnider family. Two years ago Oyvind made the comment to me that he thought I was working hard on my own but that he might be able to help me more effectively attain my goals. In the ensuing three months I dropped almost 30 lbs, half my body fat and won the GAC Fitness Challenge. Having never worked with a trainer, I was a bit skeptical as to what they could provide for me, not anymore; I am a believer! Finally, my wife Kim (who is physically fit) also jumped on the “Big O” bandwagon after a great deal of skepticism as to the value he could provide. Now I battle her for my workout times with Oyvind. Times change—don’t they.” Bob Reifsnider youth programs Yogi Eastman, Youth Programs Director Please contact Yogi for any Youth Programming and Kids’ Club inquiries at x287 JUNIOR BOOT CAMP WITH ROB BLUE Join Rob Blue, "boot camp" extraordinaire, for this sport-conditioning program. WHY I LOVE TENNIS By Juliet Hubbell At one point, my husband said to me, “You're playing WAY too much tennis”. It's a little like being told you might have a drinking problem, but I reassured myself with all the ways tennis has embellished my life. I count the majority of my long-term friendships as tennis-originated ones. Doubles partners are as solid a friend as you can get. The expression, “I'm glad I've got you on my side of the court,” has great resonance for me because it is no longer the literal, green tennis court, but life's more difficult, virtual one. Tennis friendships don't exist just within the walls of the Tennis Center, either. They transform themselves into baby showers, sick meals, job leads. Some of the best psychotherapy I've ever not had to pay for was conducted across the net, between sets, or after a long match. Clearly, tennis is a physical activity; I don't deny that. Billie Jean King once said, “Tennis is a perfect combination of violent action taking place in an atmosphere of total tranquility”. The ball machine is an example of what a great outlet tennis is. There are more times than I'd care to admit where I have rented the ball machine for no other reason than to bash the ball. If I hit the back curtain more than the inside of the baseline, it really didn't matter. Tennis allows you room for that. There's very little swearing, certainly few fisticuffs, and no one is the wiser if you are envisioning the person who cut you off on the highway that morning as you whack at the ball. My more epicurean friends say, “Oh, no, the best thing about tennis is the food after the matches”. It is true that the exotic appetizers and gourmet desserts we bring trying to outdo one another is a plus. And the camaraderie upstairs on the observation deck is easy and natural after an evening of play. Fashion maven friends say, “No, it's that I get to buy cute tennis clothes,” or my ever practical male friends point out that “…it's a game I can always improve at”. These are true as well. However, my protestation to the spousal “WAY too much tennis” remark is categorical and unwavering. It's not about tennis at all. It's about the lifelong friendships I've made here at Greenwood! A FEW THOUGHTS ABOUT TENNIS AT GAC... By Jim Arneill Greenwood Tennis Center is a great tennis facility! The clay courts are a wonderful surface to play on. They make tennis more fun and are much easier on the body. Also, there are many members with whom to compete or just work on your game. The staff here is top notch in every capacity - very professional, helpful, and friendly. It is a real privilege to belong to Greenwood! 8 Men's 3.5 USTA Colorado District Champions! I am 18 years old and have taken Pilates for two and a half years. I have swum for the Greenwood Tigersharks since I was 10 years of age and am on my way to swim for UCLA this fall. As a teenage athlete, Pilates has helped me tremendously by increasing my flexibility and core strength. It also helps in preventing injury from training. Pilates is a great workout and a lot of fun!” Member Kristen Fischer, trains with Sara Talbert What to do: P IL ATES Why to do it: “I have a degenerative disk disease in my back and Pilates has improved my health in my back as well as my overall health. Pilates has increased my flexibility, my core strength and has vastly improved my golf swing. I would recommend Pilates to everyone I know.” Member Susan Baker, trains with Pam Oliver “Taking Pilates makes me feel tall, lean, and -- dare I say? -- graceful! It gives me the head-held-high posture my grandmother always wanted me to have. It un-bunches the parts of me that need un-bunching (hamstrings come to mind), and tightens the parts of me that need tightening (don't ask). What works for me is a mixture of semi-private and group sessions, led by Jaime Bruce -- who infuses a serious blast of energy into every session.” Member Leslie Ellis, trains with Jaime Bruce “Here are just a few words regarding my love for Pilates: Of all the forms of exercise I have tried, Pilates is by far my favorite. It is amazing to me how such a gentle form of exercise can yield such effective results. Pilates has improved my strength, flexibility and “The best kept secret at GAC is the Pilates studio and all of the very talented, perceptive instructors. Pilates has significantly lessened my lower back alignment problems. I was quick to notice the overall health benefits of Pilates, such as strengthening and increasing the flexibility of my muscles. Pilates has become an essential part of my health maintenance plan.” Member Gary Kemp, trains with Sherri Weaver Fast “What I have found in Pilates is a way to improve my strength, flexibility and balance that I could not achieve with other exercise programs or routines.
