Annual Report - Traders Point Christian Academy
2012-13 Annual Report Dear Traders Point Christian Academy Family, Thank you for your faithful support during the 2012–2013 school year. Your partnership has helped us to provide greater excellence in the Christian education your students receive at Traders Point Christian Academy. This Annual Report provides evidence and illustrations of your wonderful generosity given through your time, talents and treasures so that education within a biblical worldview could become a reality to many. Reflecting on the milestones of the past year, we see record enrollment numbers, a second senior graduating class, facility safety upgrades, and expanded academic and athletic programs. We also see students being baptized in Nicaragua, as well as, becoming more active in their church youth programs and in serving their community. Throughout the year, TPCA leadership continued to strengthen the foundation on which His academy was founded. Some of our leadership were called to new endeavors to further God’s kingdom outside of the Academy walls, and we pray they will be blessed in their new fields of mission. As we reflect on the past, we also look to the future and know that God has an ultimate plan for the Academy that is beyond our understanding. We are excited to step forward in faith and hopeful that you will continue this journey with us. Our continued prayer is that every student would feel welcome, would be challenged to do their individual best and would choose God and His will for their life to impact the world for Christ! May God continue to inspire, equip and transform each student through the knowledge and experiences gained at Traders Point Christian Academy in the months and years to come. V I S I O N S TAT E M E N T Traders Point Christian Academy is a Central Indiana leader in providing an excellent Christ-centered education. We inspire, equip and transform our students and staff, through the work of the Holy Spirit, to be Christian servant leaders who impact the world through love. V I S I O N S TAT E M E N T F O R L E A R N E R S The vision of the Traders Point Christian Academy educators is that a maturing TPCA student will: AS A SPIRITIAL DISCERNER, • Appreciate who God is and His provision for reconciliation through Jesus Christ • Integrate Biblical principles and values into life situations • Accept his/her self worth as God's creation AS AN EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATOR, • Read and write skillfully and purposefully • Demonstrate competence in speaking and listening • Contribute to groups collaboratively with interpersonal skills AS A RATIONAL AND CRITICAL THINKER, • Comprehend, apply, analyze, synthesize and evaluate concepts within various contexts • Utilize mathematics to problem-solve effectively • Create original products and works with high standards AS A LIFE-LONG LEARNER, • Maintain intellectual curiosity • Utilize the scientific inquiry method • Demonstrate discernment in the utilization of technology AS A MORAL AND ETHICAL CITIZEN, • Make ethical decisions from a Biblical perspective • Respect persons of other abilities, ages, cultures, faiths, gender, races, and values • Demonstrate the Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22) in attitude and behavior AS A STEWARD OF QUALITY OF LIFE, • Serve others generously and compassionately • Maintain disciplined health habits • Appreciate the performing and visual arts 4 We believe the Bible to be the inspired, infallible, authoritative, inerrant Word of God (II Timothy 3:15, II Peter 1:21). As an intentional Christian school we integrate the bible into every subject. It is God’s story for us, it instructs on how we can experience eternal life in heaven with God and it instructs us how we can experience a full, meaningful life here on earth. One of God’s promises to us is that we can experience the fruit of the Spirit when we are walking in step with Him. It is our goal and desire for all students at TPCA to have a personal relationship with Jesus and to exhibit the fruit of the Spirit in their lives. Our Core Values spell out the word FRUIT: FAITH (belief, trust, confidence in God): We believe Jesus Christ is God’s Son and the only Lord and Savior of all creation. We believe a personal faith in Him is essential to the Christian life with personal responsibility to develop and exercise this faith for God's glory. (Matthew 16:13-17; Ephesians 1:3-14; Colossians 1:15-23; Hebrews 9:11-15) RELATIONSHIPS (Jesus, students, teachers, parents, church and/or community): We believe the school shares a partnership with the parents/guardians and the local church to build a personal relationship between students and Jesus Christ. We believe teachers instruct and serve as role models for students. We believe students have the personal responsibility to apply Biblical truths in their relationships. (Deuteronomy 6:1-9; John 13:1217; Ephesians 6:4 I Timothy 4:10-16) UNDERSTANDING (knowledge and application): We believe God is the pre-existent Creator and the ultimate source of all truth and knowledge. We believe success in education is reflected in a child’s confidence and ability to apply what he or she has learned to situations inside and outside of the classroom. We believe a Biblically based education targets the child's mind, body, heart and worldview. We believe intentional learning opportunities develop skills and gifts needed for the completion of each developmental stage. (Genesis 1-2; Proverbs 2:1-11 & 3:1-18; Genesis 1-2; Romans 1:18-32; Romans 12:1-2; Ephesians 4:20-24) INTEGRITY (accountability, excellence, honesty, transparency): We believe it is important to prepare our minds for action by applying the principles of Biblical integrity. We believe it is important for the world to see that we are set apart and made Holy, in Christ, so that the world may know Him. (Matthew 5:3-16 & 18:15-17; Acts 2:42-47; Romans 12:3-12, I Corinthians 12:7-11, Galatians 5:22-23; I Peter 1:13-16) TRUTH (discernment, wisdom): We believe God’s Word, the Bible, is the only source of truth. We believe the Bible provides the instruction and direction which determines our goals, our actions, our speech and the foundation for our relationships with others. The entire Academy spent one day serving in the community. Over the next seven years we developed the Bostick Service Initiative with the purpose of instilling the discipline of service into our students' lives on a more daily basis. What started as one day of service, now includes a weekly class where we study service and what it looks like, perform regular service for the school, and plan four service days throughout the school year. ELEMENTARY SERVICE A special thank you goes to the teachers for facilitating the following service opportunities for the elementary students: Kindergarten – Collected books for Riley’s Children Hospital 1st grade – Made friendship bracelets for those in need 2nd grade – Cleaned the cafeteria and the gym 3rd grade – Made blankets for Children’s Hospital and cleaned the cafeteria. 4th grade – Made greeting cards to give to a local nursing home and to soldiers serving overseas 5th grade – Made 47 fleece scarves to take to the Caring Center SECONDARY SERVICE Groups of 7-10 secondary students met weekly with their staff sponsor to plan their ministry work. Service groups partnered with several local nonprofit organizations including Gleaners Food Back, Lebanon Helping Center, Eagle Creek Park, Life Centers, Ronald McDonald House, Riley Hospital, Zionsville Food Bank, Zionsville Fire Department and Traders Point Christian Church. Other service groups created blankets to give to Wheeler Mission and delivered cookies to area first responders. One 6th grade service group was awarded a $1,000 grant from Youth as Resources United Way of Boone County to produce several hundred comfort bags to be used by a local hospital emergency room for their child patients. They involved all TPCA students by requesting various items for the bags, with so many extras collected that they provided many comfort items to the local police and fire departments, as well. Grades 9/10 served in Managua, Nicaragua as a part of their Spanish language immersion experience. Our grades 11/12 students served at the Apache Reservations Ministries while on their college exploration trip. Such experiences help remove barriers for our students so they may serve, travel to and work with people who have a different life experience, following God’s calling on their lives. 7 In Loving Memory... SANDY MORRIS Sandy Morris went home to heaven on September 4, 2013. She fought a short but tough battle with lung cancer. In those four months, Sandy never lost her faith and continued to be a light for Jesus. Sandy worked for 23 years at TPCA, where she dedicated many hours to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Many past and present preschool families have shared their memories of how kind Sandy was and how she truly loved each one of her students. She was invested completely in each child as an individual. She not only taught each of her students academic skills but she also taught them that Jesus was truly their best friend. She was a huge advocate for those who learned differently or had different struggles. She was their cheerleader and she never gave up on them or any of her students. She had a loving but firm hand and it was a joy watching her engage with each student. Favorite memories of Sandy will always be The Shepherd Walk, The Wiseman Walk, and her great clown outfit on Circus day. She loved to sing, “Hip Hip Hip Hippopotamus” and “Tutti Ta!” along with her signature dances!! Sandy had a passion for teaching that made her a wonderful, well-loved and respected teacher. She is missed. - Preschool teacher Tina Remender SALLY TEACHOUT On September 13, 2013 we lost Sally Teachout, who had recently retired after 16 faithful years of service at TPCA. Sally was a lifelong educator, a devoted wife and friend to TPCA staff and students. Her love for teaching made her a favorite among second grade students and her compassion for her fellow staff members and students will be deeply missed. She will be remembered for her servant’s heart and commitment to our Lord Jesus Christ, she brought that commitment to work with her each and every day. Sally was involved in TPCA’s annual speech meet competition and its Spelling Bee, and also served as a long-time volunteer at the Indianapolis Children's Museum. Her curriculum on the Iditarod dog sled race in Alaska was published in a national teaching periodical. She co-authored another curriculum that fellow TPCA teachers Kelly Wassner and Debby Byely will be presenting at a national educational conference in January. When she retired in May, the parents in Mrs. Teachout’s class made her a quilt commemorating all of her favorite things, including her beloved Indianapolis Colts, as well as Alaska and the Iditarod. The students included their fingerprints to form leaves in the shape of tree. The quilt’s design was inspired by the verse John 15:16, “…You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide…" 8 Sally Teachout and Sandy Morris were both deeply loved and respected teachers at TPCA, and the fruit of their faithful service will be eternally felt in the lives of its students and staff. - Bible teacher Brian Cook, Second grade teacher Debbie Byely YEAR IN REVIEW E A R LY C H I L D H O O D Construction of the new Traders Point Christian Church children's wing addition began this year. The new areas completed in November of 2013 will house our Early Childhood department. We will enjoy larger, more colorful classrooms with included technology, central large group rooms that we can use for play and worship, a much larger indoor play area and enhanced security for our staff and students. Due to this construction, the EC department relocated temporarily to nearby New Hope Christian Church, which graciously opened their facilities for our preschool classes during construction. The EC department will move back to TPCC in December of 2013. Improvements in the Professional Development program provided the opportunity for five staff to work on an Early Childhood Credentialing. This initiative also allowed for several speakers to come and address the staff in the area of EC and child development. Early Childhood offered several opportunities for family members to visit classes and experience TPCA preschool with the children. During the year our staff and students hosted: Dad’s Night, Mom’s Spa Day, Grandparents Day, Christmas and Spring music programs. Our students visited the K-12 building for “Bump Day” to learn what kindergarten would be like next year and to sing for visiting pastors at our annual Pastor Appreciation Day. Our preschool students also serve in a variety of ways: collecting toys for Make-A-Wish foundation, food for local charities, periodically treating our construction workers, moving boxes for needy family Christmas projects. Our students are learning at an early age to show their love for Jesus by serving others. Student evaluations have been enhanced with narrative comments to help families be well informed about their child’s academic and social development. The narrative comments on strengths, needed improvements, and general feedback for each student and includes a recommendation group/grade level placement for the upcoming school year. 9 YEAR IN REVIEW E L E M E N TA R Y Safety and security is one area that is vital in which to be proactive. We are working towards improvements on the dismissal process and have received input from staff and parents on what we can do to make it better. In addition Mrs. Veselsky, Mr. Schaffer, and our school nurses, Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Croner, attended the school safety specialist training on October 29 & 30. At this training we networked with other private and public school administrators, as well as, received training from safety specialists from around the country. We use this information each year to improve upon our own procedures. Mrs. Harris, Mr. Klingerman, and Mr. Schaffer attended an anti-bullying training on October 17, 2012. This training included seeing the movie, Bully, and talking with the director, Lee Hirsch. It provided helpful tips that will be discussed amongst staff to improve our current efforts in being proactive on the subject. We continue to develop relationships with our many community partners. Over the course of the year we will have special guests to help lead the elementary staff in devotions. Some of the groups include Moms-inTouch and the Dad’s Club. We look for ways to feed our staff spiritually throughout the year through Bible studies and through staff devotions. We appreciate our partnership with Traders Point Christian Church (TPCC). We celebrated the gifts and talents that God has given the students in our Honors Chapel at TPCC on Wednesday, October 31 in the sanctuary at Traders Point Christian Church. We have outgrown the cafeteria area for Honors Chapel and TPCC has graciously offered their facility. We honored students that received A, AB Honor Roll, Perfect Attendance, and Fruit of the Spirit Awards. On September 4, 2012 we received personalized training from Dr. Kelli Esteves, author of RTI Success, on how we can improve upon our RTI (Response To Instruction) process. This process is used to help all students, but has procedures in place to give additional help to students in need (low academic and behavioral students as well as gifted and talented students). RTI is not Special Education. Teachers are already identifying students that need help and the RTI Task Force is working on the “nuts and bolts” of how this program will work. Teachers will begin meeting with other specialized staff in October to help assess the needs of RTI students. 10 YEAR IN REVIEW E L E M E N TA R Y ( C O N T. ) RTI is a process that has been used for years to help meet the needs of students, especially below-benchmark and higher ability students. It has recently been refined to better utilize our elementary staff. Special thanks to the RTI Navigation Team, Tracy Krueger, Kelly Wassner, Katy Matthews, Lisa Mais, and Carla Cramer, for the hundreds of hours dedicated to improving and leading this process. The Language Arts task force met on December 13 to discuss the beginning steps in adopting a new Language Arts curriculum. They attended the Language Arts Textbook Caravan in January. The task force members looked and assessed the various choices, presented the different choices to the staff and McGraw Hill (Wonders) was chosen. The teachers are currently using this technology-rich curriculum resource and the initial reports from teachers are extremely good. We are still working to raise the funds to support this curriculum. FROM MRS. TEACHOUT, TO MRS. BIEBERICH, TO MR. EASLEY, EDUCATION HERE HAS CHALLENGED ME TO PURSUE AND EMBRACE THE COMING years of even greater knowledge. THE STAFF HERE HAVE BECOME MORE THAN JUST TEACHERS. they are friends and mentors, THEY ARE BLESSINGS WHO HAVE GUIDED AND BUILT IN EACH OF US A CHRIST-LIKE CHARACTER AND ATTITUDE. - EXCERPT FROM JENNA CROWDER’S 2013 VALEDICTORIAN SPEECH 11 YEAR IN REVIEW SECONDARY We began a new Cadet Teaching program with our high school students. Several were assigned to different elementary teachers as teacher aides or cadet teachers. We received positive feedback for teachers, students and parents about the impact the high school students were making in the lives of our elementary students. This utilizes one of TPCA’s strengths in serving such a wide age range of students in 18 month olds through high school. Students in grades 6 – 12 had the opportunity to travel as a group to other cities and countries for hands-on learning experiences. Grade 6 travelled to southern Indiana for cave exploration. Grade 7 went to nearby Chicago, visiting museums, dinner theater and performing community service. Grade 8 travelled to the US East Coast to experience US History first hand, visiting Gettysburg, Philadelphia, New York City, Washington DC, and Baltimore. Grades 9/10 flew to Managua, Nicaragua for a Spanish language immersion experience, receiving Spanish instruction, exploring and learning about the Nicaraguan culture and serving the community. Our grade 11/12 students travelled to the US West Coast to visit with admissions staff in many different types of colleges, such as: the US Air Force Academy, USC, UCLA, Azusa Pacific, and Northern Arizona State. They also served at the Apache Reservations Ministries. Such experiences help remove barriers for our students so they may serve others, travel to and work with people who have a different life experience. We made several changes to the chapel format including inviting our speakers to speak for several weeks in a row on our theme "U R Called… to lead, to inspire, to transform, to equip and to serve". This allowed a deeper relationship to be built between the speaker and our students. Chapel was held in the Block, a space specifically designed to engage middle school and high school students, at Traders Point Christian Church. Darrin Simpson, the middle school pastor at TPCC, lead worship on a weekly basis for our middle school students. A high school elective class called “Worship” was also added and taught by Kevin Hall from TPCC, worship leader for high school chapel. TPCA students attended the National College Fair in downtown Indianapolis and were able to talk with over 200 colleges and post-secondary schools and also were able to attend presentations on financial aid, finding the right college, and NCAA eligibility. Many university representatives also visited TPCA to meet with our students. Seniors applied to universities and for scholarships in their Career Information and Exploration course. In November, an admissions representative from Purdue University presented a workshop at TPCA for parents and students in grades 6 through 9 about college preparation. Mrs. Harris also met with each high school student, individually, to review their grades, their transcript and to plan their schedule of classes for future years. High school students took AP tests in Spanish Language, English Literature and Composition, Calculus AB and World History, as well as received dual-credits for both high school and early college credit through Indiana University. Our seniors received acceptance into many universities, including Anderson University, Ball State University, Brescia University, Indiana State, Indiana University, IUPUI, Indiana Wesleyan University, Lourdes University, Purdue University, Taylor University, University of Indianapolis, University of St. Francis, University of Southern Indiana, Valparaiso University, and Vincennes University. The high school also earned the privilege of nominating our high school students for various scholarships, including the Lilly Endowment scholarships and the Wells Scholar (at IU) among others. Our second high school graduating class included seventeen students who enjoyed commencement remarks from Pastor Aaron Brockett and WTHR-13 news anchor John Stehr. While on the J-term trip to Nicaragua, twelve freshmen and sophomores deepened their relationship with Jesus through baptism. We had many secondary students accept Christ and be baptized at their local churches during this school year. Mr. Easley, Mr. Cook and Mr. Cox continued to pour into these students’ lives on a daily basis. They also followed up with the students in an effort to connect them to a home church that will challenge them to grow in their faith. 12 AT H L E T I C S FALL 2012 Football – grades 1/2, 3/4, 5/6 & 7/8 Cross Country – middle and high school Volleyball – grades 5/6, 7/8 & high school Soccer - 5/6 & 7/8 Accomplishments: Carson Mathis, Will Lyons, Xavier Porter, Sam Johnson, and Myles Cox made the All-Star team for 3/4 football. ALL SPORTS BANQUET The second annual All Sports Banquet ended another great year of athletics at TPCA. We were honored to have long time Academy friend, Ralph Reiff, as our guest speaker. We continue to benefit from our partnership with Mr. Reiff’s company, St. Vincent Sports Performance, from our athletic trainers working with our student athletes, to our new, state of the art scoreboards in the gymnasium. START CHILDREN OFF ON THE WAY THEY SHOULD GO, AND EVEN WHEN THEY ARE OLD They will not TURN FROM IT. - PROVERBS 22:6 13 I N T E R N AT I O N A L S T U D E N T P R O G R A M The Academy hosted two students last year on F1 student visas through our International Student Program (ISP). The students were from China and Serbia. They attended seventh and twelfth grade. ISP students report they attend the Academy primarily for language acquisition, cultural learning and college preparation. The Academy offers this program for two reasons. First, it enriches the learning environment for domestic students by bringing learners from different cultures to the academy. Additionally, ISP expands the Academy’s influence by educating these students from a Biblical worldview, allowing our staff and students to share Christ with the world through our visiting student’s experience while at TPCA. In addition to the academic program, the Academy provides a homestay experience for the students through which host families can ease their transition away from home and help them experience our culture in a warm and loving environment. Two Academy families participated in the homestay program and report that it was a positive experience. The high school student met our requirement for graduation and is currently achieving a high level of success at IMG Academy in Florida as he seeks an athletic scholarship for college. INDIANA SCHOOL CHOICE SCHOLARSHIPS Indiana’s new (aka vouchers) voucher program (authorized under IC 20-51-1 and IC 20-51-4) gives Hoosier families the opportunity to send their children to a school that best meets their learning needs. A voucher, or “Choice Scholarship,” is a state payment that qualifying families can use to offset tuition costs at participating schools. TPCA is approved by the Indiana Department of Education to receive Choice Scholarship funds. Voucher amounts are based on the funds the student’s school district of residence would receive each year for that student. Amounts can range from $2,200 – nearly $5,000 per year depending on the students resident school district and grade level. There are other options for students who do not meet the public school attendance requirement for vouchers that may allow them to receive a Choice Scholarship in the current or future years. These options involve receiving a scholarship from an Indiana approved Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO). SAGAMORE INSTITUTE SCHOLARSHIPS F O R E D U C AT I O N C H O I C E ( S G O ) Scholarships for Education Choice is an Indiana Department of Education certified scholarship granting organization (SGO), an initiative of the Sagamore Institute—an Indianapolis-based nonprofit, nonpartisan, public policy research organization, or “think tank.” They offer scholarships to students in grades K-12 and families that qualify under the Indiana School Scholarship Tax Credit Program, which offers substantial tax incentives to donors to support state approved school choice scholarship programs like Scholarships for Education Choice through Sagamore. For more information regarding the 50% state tax credit and federal deduction incentive for your gift, please contact Leslie Kowal, Director of Advancement at [email protected] or Kraig Cox, Director of Development at [email protected]. Information can also be found at www.tpcs.org under the “Support TPCA” tab. Traders Point Christian Academy had 132 students participate in the voucher or SGO program, or both, during the 2012-2013 school year. For more information on eligibility requirements and how to apply, please contact Toni Kanzler, Director of Admissions, at [email protected] or by calling (317) 769-2450. 14 F I S C A L Y E A R E N D J U LY 3 1 , 2 0 1 3 2012-2013 REVENUES TOTAL REVENUES: $5,191,883 2011-2012 Expenses 2012-2013 EXPENSES TOTAL EXPENSES: $5,273,808 Total Expenses: $4,941,905 Salaries & Benefits Tuition Assistance & Discounts 50% 16% Instructional & Student Events Facilities & Equipment Administration & Fundraising 7% 5% Auxiliary Services Depreciation & Amortization Interest Expense 7% 9% 4% 3% TOTAL DEBT OUTSTANDING at July 31 (in millions) *Modular building loan originated July 2011. It is also needed to support the constant expansion and growth of the Academy. The fund allows the Academy to provide a quality educational experience with small student to teacher ratio, state and nationally recognized facilities, innovative programs and equipment, necessary academic supplies, local, national and international service efforts and trips, and dedicated Christian, professional teachers. It makes up the difference between tuition paid and the actual cost of educating TPCA students, which is on average a $1,200 gap per student. People with a passion for Christian education and with a belief in TPCA’s mission and ministry, provide gifts to Building Foundations. Although too numerous to list, the following gives many examples of what Building Foundations helps fund. We also want to thank all of our donors for the generous gifts made to the Academy. These gifts help us bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a TPCA education. They are necessary for both maintaining and expanding excellent educational programs, as well as, opportunities for spiritual growth for TPCA students. Our students have this amazing place to go to school because of the vision, prayer and hard work of those who came before us. Support from you continues this legacy for our children and for those to come. For your convenience, there are many ways to make your gift to TPCA.
