Mit den herkömmlichen Methoden des Erkenntnisgewinns – den Naturwissenschaften einerseits und den
Geisteswissenschaften andererseits – ist die Menschheit
an eine Grenze gestoßen. Die Verkettung von industriellem Stoffwechsel, Klimawandel, Verstädterung, Bodenerosion und Artensterben stellt neue Herausforderungen,
die eine einzelne Disziplin kaum bewältigen kann: Die
gewandelten und neu organisierten Beziehungen zwischen Menschheit und Erde erfordern neue Ansätze zur
Frage, was es heißt, auf und in der Welt zu sein, an ihre
materiellen und dynamischen Prozesse angebunden zu
sein. So wie fossile Staubkörner aus der afrikanischen
Sahel-Zone, vom Wind getragen, die Vegetation am
Amazonas anreichern, so sammeln sich Plastikmengen
in weit entfernten Ozeanstrudeln an. Der Mensch
schreibt sich in die irdischen Ströme und Kreisläufe ein.
Ein neues Staunen über das Wunder Erde ist gefragt:
Wie re-sensibilisieren wir uns für die Weltzusammenhänge, in denen wir existieren? Wie verbinden wir das, was
wir tun, mit dem, was wir wissen?
The humanities and the natural sciences, as today’s
established forms of knowledge, have reached a limit in
their capacities to approach the challenges of the
Anthropocene. The entanglement of industrial metabolism, climate change, rapid urbanization, soil erosion,
and species extinction poses problems too complex
for any one field to address in total: the transformation
and re-organization of the complex interconnections
between humanity and Earth require different approaches
to what it means to be in the world, to be connected
to materials and dynamic processes. Like a speck of
Saharan dust that is carried by trade winds to nourish the
Amazon basin, granulate plastics accumulate in far
away ocean gyres. Our anthropic traces are inseparable
from earthly matters. We must approach the Earth with
a renewed sense of wonder: how do we re-sensitize
ourselves to the world we live in? How do we connect
what we do with what we know?

Adam Avikainen: CSI Department of Natural Resources
Adam Avikainen befasst sich mit der Rolle der Naturwissenschaften
in unserer Gegenwart, dem Künstler als »Medium« und Detektiv ­sowie
der Malerei als Praxis. In 333 investigativen Episoden spielt er mit wissenschaftlichen Methoden und Theorien ebenso wie mit Forensik und
weitet sie poetisch zu einer fortwährenden narrativen Untersuchung aus.
Adam Avikainen engages with the role of the natural sciences in our
present, the artist as “medium” and detective, and with painting as
praxis. In 333 investigative episodes he plays with scientific methods and
theories as well as forensic methodologies, by poetically expanding
them into an ongoing narrative research.
Anthropocene Observatory: #4 The Dark Abyss of Time
Anthropocene Observatory beobachtet die durch die neue geologische
Epoche ausgelösten destabilisierenden Verhältnisse, die sich auf
verschiedene Bereiche erstrecken: politische Ordnungen, Institutionen,
Recht, internationale Organisationen, Infrastrukturen, Krieg, Land,
die Praxis wissenschaftlicher Forschung, das Meer, Städte, Märkte und
Planungsinstitutionen. Episode #4 the dark abyss of time untersucht,
wie diese Bedingungen Landschaften umgestalten: menschliche Räume
ebenso wie ihr materielles Gegenüber.
Anthropocene Observatory explores the destabilizing conditions
entailed by the new geological epoch that reverberate across polities,
institutions, law, international organizations, infrastructures, war,
land, practices of scientific investigation, the sea, cities, markets, and
planning institutions. Episode #4 the dark abyss of time investigates
how these conditions reshape territories: human spaces and their
material counterparts.

The Otolith Group: Medium Earth
medium earth (2013) untersucht die erdbebengefährdete Geologie
in Kalifornien und das Unterbewusste der kapitalistischen Moderne.
Der Film lauscht den kalifornischen Wüsten, übersetzt, was die Steine
schreiben, und entziffert die Kalligrafie der Erdspalten. who does
the earth think it is (2014) ist eine Auswahl von Erdbebenvorhersagen, die zwischen 1993 und 2007 unaufgefordert an das United States
Geological Survey Pasadena Field Office geschickt wurden.
medium earth (2013) explores the earthquake-endangered geology
of California as well as the unconscious of capitalist modernity. The
film listens to the Californian deserts, translates the writing of its
stones, and deciphers the calligraphies of its expansion cracks.
who does the earth think it is (2014) consists of unsolicited earthquake
predictions sent by members of the public to the United States
Geological Survey Pasadena Field Office between 1993 and 2007.

Was bedeuten materielle Vorgänge für die Erschließung von Welt? Der
Mensch ist nicht nur in der Welt, er macht Welt. demonstrations,
practices und exchanges bringen Wissens- und Wahrnehmungspraktiken in und zur Verhandlung: Internationale Künstler, Theoretiker
und Wissenschaftler verorten die Auswirkungen menschlichen Handelns
im dynamischen Gefüge von Stoffkreisläufen und Erdzuständen,
geohistorischen Ereignissen und weltumspannenden Technologien.
What do material processes mean for the articulation of the world
around us? Humans are not just in the world, humans also create
the world. demonstrations, practices, and exchanges bring together
and engage with ways of knowing and doing. Artists, theorists, and
scholars from around the world trace the impacts of human activity in
the dynamic fabric of metabolic cycles and physical states, geohistorical
events and planetary technologies.
Human Impacts and Their Consequences
Stellt das Anthropozän eine umfassende qualitative Veränderung dar,
einen Paradigmenwechsel in Wissenschaft, Politik und Recht und der
Art und Weise, wie sie mit der Krise, in der wir uns befinden, umgehen?
Diesen Fragen stellt sich die anthropocene working group, eine
Arbeitsgruppe der International Commission on Stratigraphy, mit

as the ways each approach the crisis in which we now find ourselves?
The anthropocene working group, a working group of the International

with further guests in a public forum.

Future Storytelling
Welche Geschichten lassen sich crossmedial zum Anthropozän erzählen?
Im Rahmen des Medienwettbewerbs beschäftigen sich Journalisten
und Medienkünstler mit dieser Frage. Die drei besten Produktionen, ausgewählt von einer prominent besetzten Jury, werden prämiert und die
12 Projekte der Longlist vorgestellt.
What stories can be told in a cross-media fashion on the Anthropocene?
In the framework of a media competition, journalists and media artists
have explored this subject. The three best productions, selected by
a jury of prominent figures, will be awarded a prize and the long list of
12 projects will be presented.

In transdisziplinärer Kollaboration haben Forscher und Lehrende aus
den Natur- und Geisteswissenschaften, aus Kunst, Architektur und
Design ein anthropozän-curriculum entwickelt, das exemplarisch
für neue Wissensbezüge steht. Während des anthropocene campus
wird dieses Curriculum mit einer Gruppe von 100 ausgewählten Nachwuchswissenschaftlern, Künstlern und Kulturschaffenden erstmals
am HKW erprobt und anhand konkreter Fallbeispiele diskutiert.
A transdisciplinary collaboration between researchers and university
teachers from the natural sciences and humanities, as well as art,
architecture, and design, has developed an anthropocene curriculum
that exemplifies new coordinates for an anthropocenic knowledge.
At the anthropocene campus, this curriculum is put to the test for the
first time with 100 young academics, artists, and cultural producers,
and discussed based on concrete case studies.

questions behind a report. An encyclopedia, developed by the office
eta boeklund as an online presentation, is dedicated to central terms
in the anthropocene project.
On Research III
Ein zweitägiger Workshop bietet Einblicke in die kuratorische Konzeption
des anthropozän-projekts. Im Zentrum steht der Kurator als Mediator zwischen komplexen Realitäten und immer vielfältigeren Formen der
Wissensproduktion (Teilnahme auf Einladung).
A two-day workshop offers insights into the curatorial conception of
the anthropocene project. Central here is the curator as a mediator
between complex realities and increasingly manifold forms of knowledge
production (by invitation only).
Textures Of The Anthropocene: Grain Vapor Ray
In drei Bänden und einer »Gebrauchsanleitung« nimmt die Publikation
die materiellen Ströme der Welt beim Wort – in Form des Partikularen
(Grain), des Flüchtigen (Vapor) und des Strahlenden (Ray): ein Korpus
von Texten aus mehreren Jahrhunderten von Hippokrates über Babur
bis Keynes, ein Archiv der Reflexion über die Dinge und ihre Transformationen, kommentiert und weitergeschrieben von zeitgenössischen
Autoren. Die Denkbewegungen und Reflexionen des Buchs werden von
a matter theater aufgenommen.
Across three volumes and a “manual,” the publication takes the
material flows of the world literally, in the form of the particular (grain),
the fleeting (vapor), and the radiant (ray): a body of texts from several
centuries, from Hippocrates to Babur and Keynes, builds an archive of
reflection on things undergoing transformation, commented upon
and expanded by contemporary writers. The thoughts and reflections
within the book inform a matter theater.

entwickelt. Scheinbar binäre Kategorien wie Kultur/Natur, Subjekt/
Objekt werden in dieser Reihe in Frage gestellt. Der erste Band erscheint
im Oktober.
This exhibition series in paperback format was developed with
Anna-Sophie Springer and Etienne Turpin for the SYNAPSE curators’
network. The series provokes questions about the validity of seeming
categorical binaries such as culture and nature, subject and object. The
first volume is published this October.

intersecting practices. Scientists and artists work

Wie verändert das Anthropozän unsere wissenschaftlichen Zugänge zur
Welt? Wie können sich Lehre und Forschung den Herausforderungen
rapiden globalen Wandels verantwortungsvoll stellen; welche Formen
der Wissensproduktion und -vermittlung sind dem angemessen?
Was bedeutet es, die institutionalisierten disziplinären Zuständigkeitsbereiche in Frage zu stellen und gänzlich neu zu verhandeln? Welche
neuen Wissensfelder entstehen, wenn ein Atmosphärenchemiker, ein
Technikhistoriker und ein Architekt ein gemeinsames Lehrprogramm
entwerfen?
Von den »geo-politischen« Wechselwirkungen zwischen fortschreitender Wüstenbildung und bewaffneten Konflikten über die Medialisierung
des Anthropozäns bis hin zu den Ressourcenabhängigkeiten eines
Großstadtsystems oder Phänomenen lokalen Klimawandels am Beispiel
Berlins: Entlang konkreter Fallstudien stellen internationale Forscher
und Lehrende ein anthropozän-curriculum vor, das sie in transdisziplinärer Kollaboration als exemplarisch für die neuen Bezüge eines
erdverbundenen Wissens entwickelt haben.
Als Modellkurs wird dieser Lehrkorpus mit einer Gruppe von 100 ausgewählten Nachwuchswissenschaftlern, Künstlern und Kulturschaffenden
während des anthropocene campus erstmals am HKW erprobt und
im Rahmen eines öffentlichen Forums mit weiteren Akteuren aus Bildung

How does the Anthropocene change our scientific approach to the
world? How can teaching and research face the challenges of rapid
global change in a responsible way? What forms of knowledge production
and transmission are appropriate responses? What does it mean
to question the borders between institutionalized disciplines, or even
to renegotiate them entirely? What new fields of knowledge emerge when
an atmospherics chemist, a historian of technology, and an architect
develop a joint curriculum?
From the “geo-political” interactions between desertification and
armed conflict, across the mediatization of the Anthropocene, to the
resource dependence of an urban system or phenomena of local
climate change using the example of Berlin: by way of concrete case
studies, international researchers and university teachers present an
anthropocene curriculum developed in transdisciplinary collaboration
as exemplary for the new coordinates of an earthbound knowledge.
This model course will be put to the test for the first time with a
selected group of 100 young researchers, artists, and cultural producers
during the anthropocene campus at HKW and discussed with other
actors from the fields of education and policymaking. Materials on the
seminars, video and audio materials on the campus, and a course
book will be published online.
