Onion Creek Club Catering [email protected] 512.383.2004 Green Committee Don Milberger Before I write the newsletter article I always review my previous article to make sure any open items are covered. In the article for the July-August newsletter (which was written in mid June) I was discussing how much rain we had and how it both helped and hurt the course. For this newsletter, heavy rains are not an issue. Mother Nature can’t seem to strike a happy medium—we were flooded in May and June and have received almost no rain for July and August. We have gone from wet turf conditions to bone dry turf conditions in a very short period of time. These very dry conditions are hard on the trees and grass so we are asking for your help. If we all pitch-in and do our part the course will recover quickly when we get some rain. How can you do your part? The first way is to “double-up” when using a cart. The less cart traffic we have on the turf the better it is for the turf. Please do not take a single cart. Ride with one of your golfing partners. If we have no more than two (2) carts per foursome, we can reduce course wear and tear. Another way to help the turf is to drive on the fairways—not drive in the rough. This may seen counter-intuitive but fairways are watered and can recover from cart traffic quicker than the rough which is not watered. With our limited supply of water we are not able to irrigate the entire course—we are just irrigating tees, fairways and greens. In addition, the new greens are consuming a lot of water during their “grow-in” period. If your ball goes into the rough, please stop your cart in the fairway and look for your ball “on-foot”. This will spare the rough from multiple cart tracks driving back and forth. The rough is very dry and can be easily damaged while it is in this condition. A few years back, we had a mandatory cart entrance onto each fairway and a mandatory cart exit from the fairway. Unless we get some significant rain, we may once again need to institute this practice. Anything you and your golfing partners can do to help protect the course during this very dry time is greatly appreciated. Ryan and his crew have been extremely busy with “normal” golf course maintenance in addition to the care and feeding of the new greens plus rebuilding the bunkers on The Crenshaw Nine. Ryan said the new greens are progressing very well and the plan is to have all twenty-seven holes open by September 25. Obviously, weather can play a part in changing this plan but barring any unforeseen circumstances we should have all new greens and bunkers as we enter the Fall season. The new well drilled into the Trinity Aquifer appears to be a success. Early tests indicate we will have additional water from the new well in 2016. Currently, permits for this new well are being processed and the permitting process is expected to be complete in late 2015 or early 2016. This will be a welcome addition since our gray water supply from the City has been curtailed since the October 2013 flood damaged the water treatment plant. As a side note, while I was driving past the water storage ponds on #8 North, I noticed one pond is completely dry and the other pond is as low as I have ever seen it. As always, if you have any questions or comments about the course, feel free to contact me at [email protected]. An alternative to this is to contact any member of The Green Committee that you may personally know. If we don’t know the answer to your question, we will get you an answer. The Legend award is a lifetime achievement award for those persons who have given significantly of their time and money to make the Onion Creek Club a better place by promoting fellowship and fun in the membership. Contact Membership Chairman Rick Baughman– [email protected] Contact Secretary Doug Wilda– [email protected] The plentiful rain of spring has turned into a sustained period with no precipitation. The course is suffering – particularly the rough. (Some members might not think that this is a bad thing as the lush rough we had in the spring was very challenging) Please be considerate in driving your cart in all areas of the course as it doesn’t need any more stress. A special note on golf cart etiquette – the general rule is to do 90 degree entry and exit – do not drive in the rough as that just mats down the rough. In muddy conditions, stay away from casual water and avoid fast starts and stops and this can tear up the turf and it takes a long time for the course to recover. WGA News Lynn League WGA Website Lots of dates to remember in September. First and foremost is the WGA Championship set for September 8, 9, and 11 with the Saturday players Championship flight on September 12 and 13. We reward low gross and low net overall and in each flight with the traditional Texas-shaped, jeweled pendant. This may be the last year to win one of these iconic charms, as our source of many years, Gold Creations, will be closing its Austin business. A nice thing about the Championship tournament is that it’s FREE. The worst of the heat of summer is over, so no excuses. Sign up with event chair Carolyn Koski at [email protected]. In August, we recognized these WGA members who took home trophies in the OCC Club Championship: Jill Wilcox, Club Champion, Linda Bradford, second low gross and Susan Adair, low net. In the first flight, Beebe Mireles won low gross and Barb Woolley, low net. Take advantage of a chance to volunteer with up-and-coming young golfers on September 10 when LPGA-USGA Girls Golf members come out after school to play a few holes with our WGA members as guides. It’s always a fun and rewarding time. Sign up with Rita Romero ([email protected]). Next annual event on the docket is the popular MGA/WGA tournament on September 25th, a scramble with players from both organizations making up the foursomes. There’s a fun pairing party on the Friday night before the event and an outdoor lunch after play. Sign-ups are handled through the MGA website. Look for more information later this month. Coming up October 19-20 is the Wild Onion member-guest tournament. There may still be space available. This one fills up fast. Contact Mary Lou Bledsoe, [email protected], to sign up with a partner. If you don’t have a partner, Mary Lou may be able to fix you up with one. There’s great food, a raft of prizes and fun camaraderie during this popular event that attracts players from all over the state. Special Achievements: Our latest and greatest Hole-in-One winner is Sherry Berry. This first- time event for Sherry happened on Original #11 on August 6th. Ace of the Month in July: Chris Walters; in August: Jill English Star of the Month in July: Joan Solomon; in August: Arlene Monroe Saturday Ace in July: Beebe Mireles; in August: Debbie Staub October is the last chance to win Ace or Star in order to compete in the annual Ace of Aces Tournament in November. Save the Date… September 22– General Meeting at 1:30 after play. Sign up with Vicki Kramer for the lunch special in the Demaret Room before the meeting. October 27– Halloween Hoot, October 31 for Saturday players. Start practicing the one-foot drive and left-handed putt if you want to win this wild and crazy game of the day. Luncheon and General Meeting will follow play. Look for sign-up information later. Until next time, remember…. There are two things you can learn by stopping your backswing at the top and checking the position of your hands: how many hands you have and which one is wearing the glove. 29 7:00 AM At 3:00 PM
