Spice Trade in the UAE
History
Although the Spice Souk in Dubai only
dates back to 1850’s, spice trade in the
Middle East goes as far back as 3000BC.
It started as a land trade; by caravan spice
traders moved their goods across the Arabian Gulf. Later trade by ship took over as
the main route for spices to move from one
country to the next. Today we know that
70% of the world’s spices come from
India. Back then, spice traders or middlemen would keep secret its origins, in part
to protect their trade routes. Spices, insense
and textiles were the most sought after in
the world. Throughout the middle ages,
spices and other insense were studied and
used extensively not only for their taste,
but as medical treatments for common
illnesses and overall health.

Dubai’s Spice Souk
It is well know that spices hold the key to
many ancient treatments, from skin
ailments to digestive, circulatory, and
organ function. Did you know that Saffron
has been used in Chinese medicine to treat
metabolic diseases, anaemia, restlessness,
and mental stress? The Arabs believed that
it relaxes you, and is still used in traditional arabic coffee preparation. Cardamom,
which is a treatment for mouth ulcers,
digestive problems, and even depression
can also be found in many arabic dishes
and drinks. Whatever your aliment, a trip
down to the Spice Souk was the cure.
Spice traders were well equipped with the
knowledge of every spice in their shop;
how to prepare it and use.
