The Significance of Veterans day
Veterans Day is intended to thank and honor all those who served in the military, in wartime or
peacetime. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank living Veterans for their service, to
acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore
the fact that all those served, not only those who died- have sacrificed and done their duty.
Arlington Place tenants and staff would like to say a big THANK YOU, to those who have, who
will, and who are serving for our country.

In Loving Memory of
Maryanne Buss
1928-2013
Maryanne Buss, age 85 of Pocahontas,
passed away on November 2nd, 2013
after a short illness. Maryanne was born
in Lone Tree, Iowa. Where she graduated
High School and attended the Paris
Academy Beauty School in Cedar Rapids.
Maryanne was a avid cribbage player and
a very competitive card player. She truly
loved all card games and enjoyed
teaching them to others. She started a
Card Club here at Arlington Place, and
they would play at the same time almost
every night. Hand and Foot was her
ultimate favorite card game. She was
always willing to teach a new game, and
she definitely enjoyed doing it, if it meant
they had one more player.
Maryanne will truly be missed by all.
Welcome Arlene Dunn
Arlington Place tenants and staff would like to give a
warm welcome to Arlene Dunn. Arlene was born
April 10th 1921 in Bradgate, and grew up in Rolfe.
Arlene moved into Arlington Place in November.
Arlene is a very friendly, fun and outgoing person.
Some of the things Arlene enjoys is playing 500, and
crocheting. She also stated that she enjoys watching

say hello! Welcome to Arlington Place Arlene, we
are excited to have you!

Maintenance news from John Harter
Thinking ahead to the upcoming seasonal change, we are starting to
prepare for the winter weather. Ice melt has been purchased, and the snow is
ready to go. Did you know: When the conditions are slick and slippery we
offer valet parking services for the convenience of our residents and quests.
Recent updates at Arlington Place: we have upgraded our lighting in the
lobby to efficient LED bulbs. We have also installed automatic lighting in the
downstairs restrooms to better assist our residents.
We recently had our boilers and heating system inspected for safe and
efficient operation. The elevator was inspected and a new certificate was
issued. We are ready for the winter weather and for a new year!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Letter from the Manager,
Lauri Fulkerth
The holidays are upon us!
This is a good time to check on those who live alone in your
community. Please make sure their heat is working and they
have enough food. Watch for other warning signs as well.
You may notice a change in the persons mood as the
holidays approach. They may not be as physically active, or
they show symptoms of fatigue or sadness and have no
interest in the holidays or in their surroundings.
Depression can set in easily over the holidays. You can
help by simply offering to go shopping with them. Ask them
to help you with some of your holiday baking. Sit and have
pie and coffee. A visit can change a persons whole outlook
over the holidays. Lets do what we can to make this a Merry
Christmas for everyone.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
A Message from our Nurse
Christina Weydert
It’s official! The cold weather is here and
with it comes snow and ice. If you are sitting
inside with a warm blanket and a cup of
cocoa, the glistening snow can be a beautiful
sight, however if you are planning on
bundling up and heading out it can mean risky business.
No matter how young or old you may be, a slip on the ice
can be painful and cause major injuries.
I encourage you to take the proper precautions when
going out in the cold or taking a loved one out. Be sure to
dress warm. Try to cover all areas of the skin including your
hands, neck, and face as much as possible. Frost bite can
occur quickly and can be very painful. Sometimes there can
be a thin sheet of ice under the snow that can sneak up on
the best of us. Try to keep sidewalks scooped and iced
areas scraped to limit the hazard of slip and falls. If you
have to go out in the cold weather try wearing shoe
grippers to prevent the threat of slipping.
I encourage the community if you do not have to go out
in the treacherous weather to stay indoors and if caring for
your home or yourself is getting to be a burden then come
see us at Arlington and let us help you through this cold
winter season. Happy Holidays to Everyone, stay safe and
keep warm!
Culinary Director- Whitney Case
With Christmas right around the corner, one of our
favorite family traditions was always making Sugar
Cookies. Quick, easy and delicious! Once baked, the
children decorated with frosting and candies.
Here is our recipe.
Can you believe it’s already December? Where
has the time gone? Although I have enjoyed
November, with all the activities going on and if
you know me, especially the crafts! How cute
are our Turkey wreaths? Too cute! I have a lot in
store for December and I’m excited for all the
participation!
I encourage you to invite your friends and family
to come out and join us through any activity.
Whatever it may be, come out and see what we
are all about! I look forward to seeing some new
faces!
Happy Holidays to you, and yours!
