Accelerating to the NLC
3 Tips to Boost Member Involvement
By Cole Simmons
It’s time to prepare for yet
another successful year.
Last year, we witnessed
members become their very
best through dynamic conferences, engaging workshops, and competitions
that pushed them to their
limits and allowed for the nation’s 250,000+ members
to Ignite Innovation.
As we begin a new year, commit to
take advantage of everything FBLA
offers. Our innovative conferences,
competitive events, projects, and
networking opportunities will help
determine your route to success and
make you a shining example of Excellence in Action. The journey starts soon
THE
with the 2013 National Fall Leadership Conferences in Dallas/Fort Worth
(Grapevine), Cleveland, and Salt Lake
City. Local chapter leaders will be
given the tools to navigate the year and
ensure success.
As the year progresses, be sure to
actively recruit potential members and
encourage participation in our national
membership campaigns—there is no
better way to watch our membership
numbers grow! Existing members
need not be ignored; it’s important to
continue to shape them into the future
of our nation!
Prepare now for competitive events.
They will kick off at your Regional/
District and State Leadership Conferences, testing your knowledge and
setting the stage for the 2014 National
Leadership Conference in Nashville!
There, the best-of-the-best will gather
to compete, network, and showcase
their talents.
I wish you the best of luck for another successful year. On behalf of the
2013–14 national officer team, I hope
your hard work drives you toward accomplishing your goals. I look forward
to seeing our membership grow and
our existing members develop into the
business leaders of tomorrow. The
steering wheel is in our hands; let’s
make this a year to remember!

INNOVATION CENTER
Help Shape the Future of FBLA-PBL!
The FBLA-PBL National Center wants to hear from you! Have a great idea you want to share? Members

Putting Excellence in Action
Creating a Program of Work
By Beau Cobb

for things to go their way. –Anthony Vultaggio

in Action!
INTRODUCTIONS
An effective program of work begins
with getting to know your local officers
with a fun ice breaker and planting the
FBLA-PBL vision. Over the year, it will
be important for your chapter to stay
on track with the vision and mission of
FBLA-PBL. If you’re not working toward
your goals, you’re working away from
them.
CHAPTER CHALLENGES
Now the real fun begins—developing
chapter challenges! Challenges help
your team strive for excellence all year.
The national officers separate their
goals into four divisions: customer service, relationships, image and awareness, and resources. Before your first
meeting, ask each officer to bring one
REWARDING—Set rewards for
reached goals.
Remember, it’s better to do a few
things well, than have a lot of goals
that accomplish little!
GOALS
When discussing your goals, ask
yourself the following questions such
as, “Why are we doing this?” and “What
is the purpose?” Analyze your chapter’s current situation and prepare for
obstacles throughout the year. There’s
no such thing as a dumb idea, so think
outside the box! After your team sets
goals, it’s time to detail the action
steps and set deadlines. Many deadlines may not be flexible, so discuss
each date with your team and advisers
to determine which ones can be modified.
EVALUATION
Congratulations, you’ve written a
program of work! But there is still one
more step—the most important step:
evaluation.
Once you complete this document,
review it each month to ensure your
chapter is on track. If changes need
to be made, consult your adviser and
team for necessary modifications. At
the end of the year, evaluate your successes before you pass your program
of work to the incoming officer team,
and then go out and celebrate your
Excellence in Action!

program of work? Email Beau Cobb at

advance, in order to collect and
submit membership dues to the
national office on time.

The chapter president should
create a meeting agenda in advance, so meet with chapter
officers a few days ahead of time
to plan it. Design your agenda to
encourage attendees to try out
competitions, watch a recruitment
video, and listen to testimonials
from returning members. It is also
important to provide several opportunities for prospective members to
ask questions.
Start Right
By Adam Nissinoff
A
s the saying goes, your first
impression is your last impres-
sion, so it’s important to start right! A
well-executed meeting helps foster success. By following four simple steps, you
can ensure your first chapter meeting
is memorable.
1N
. ADVERTISE
o one will attend your meeting unless
they know the logistics: where is it
held? Who should attend? This is especially
important for the first chapter meeting, since
many students are not yet familiar with FBLA.
The more ways you advertise, the better the
meeting’s attendance. Hang posters around
your school and distribute flyers to potential
members. Take advantage of your school’s
PA or television system to broadcast meeting
information. And don’t forget about social media! Create a Facebook event, tweet meeting
reminders, and share the promotional membership video (go.fbla.org/promovideo). Finally,
ask business teachers to promote your FBLA
meeting to their students.
When planning the meeting date, keep FBLA’s
membership deadline (October 20) in mind,
and schedule your meeting several weeks in
4 Tomorrow’s Business Leader
. CREATE AN AGENDA
3
. MEETING DAY
Officers should arrive early on
meeting day to greet members and
gather basic contact information,
such as email addresses and phone
numbers. Stay organized by collecting this
data on index cards or preprinted forms. Use
this information to alert members to future
meetings. Not every student checks email regularly, so don’t rely solely on digital mediums.
Distribute flyers, at a later date, to members
who were unable to attend the meeting.
Plan for a lively experience! Your goal is to
engage students so they are excited to join
FBLA. Provide hands-on activities that incorporate audience participation and teamwork.
Also, it never hurts to offer food! Being able
to purchase two slices of pizza and a soda for
only $1.50 was a deciding factor to attend my
first chapter meeting!

. THE FOLLOW-UP
The recruitment process doesn’t end once
the meeting is over. In fact, following up with
members is one of the most important recruitment tools. Send members a brief email and/
or text message that thanks them for their
attendance and reminds them of future meetings.
By following these steps, you can organize
a memorable meeting that convinces prospective members to embark upon an FBLA
journey!

A Super Start with
Super Sweeps
By Natalie Tran
M
embers buzz with excitement after an FBLA conference. The energy from the
National Leadership Conference
(NLC) is so infectious it leads to a
little-known condition called PostConference Depression (PCD).
The best way to combat PCD is
to not let the excitement die. Instead, channel it toward growing
your chapter!
Last year, September Sweeps—a
membership recruitment and retention
program—was introduced to FBLA and
was wildly successful. This year, your
national officer team revamped the program—now called Super Sweeps—to
be a part of the Chapter Challenge.
Chapter Challenge features the following three components:
•
•
Super Sweeps (Aug. 1–Oct. 20) focuses
on membership recruitment and retention.
Nonstop November (Nov.1–Dec. 10)
focuses on member involvement.
•
Action Awareness (Jan. 15–Mar. 1)
focuses on CTSO awareness.
Your chapter does not need to complete all three challenges to participate.
When they complete one or more
of the challenges, they will receive
ribbons at both the NFLC and NLC. If
your chapter completes all of the challenges, members will receive a special
pin at the 2014 NLC in Nashville.
Super Sweeps will help your local chapter recruit and retain members, as well
as gain recognition! Once your adviser
registers your chapter, your chapter
will need to complete four required
activities and six additional activities.
All of the activities correlate to FBLAPBL goals, to facilitate recruitment and
retention, and to help your chapter
grow! Super Sweeps will help you get
a super start on the year as you make
your journey toward the 2014 NLC in
Nashville.
Chapter Challenge and other FBLA programs, such as Business Achievement
Awards (BAAs) and Go Green, serve as
great opportunities to help both members and chapters get recognition. Visit
fbla-pbl.org for more information, or
contact your national officer team.
Not only is Super Sweeps a great
way to increase membership, it’s also
a great way to increase involvement
within your chapter. Creating a membership committee is a creative way to
get others involved and to reach out to
as many students as possible. So remember: get a super start by registering for Super Sweeps today!
