Time Out December 2014 - Triton Waterpolo Club
The 2014/2015 Triton Water Polo season has started with a bang. We have a record
number of teams in the WA competition and players are competing for treasured
spots in those teams. The
are doing particularly well - competing fiercely
against each other as well as the other clubs’ teams.
Triton had a women’s
team compete in the Gold Coast tournament and
came home with GOLD! The women have big numbers at training and are followed
by a group of strong, competitive 16 and 14 year old girls itching to take their
spots….watch out ladies!
The
are not far behind. Again, competition is tough to secure a premier league
spot and the lads are training hard. With a young but very competitive A Reserve
squad, our comp is looking strong for the years ahead. Check out the A Reserve and
Premier League gents here http://www.tritonwaterpolo.org/news/mens-premierleague-sept-28/premier-league-and-a-reserve-squad-photos/
Division teams are clocking up some wins and it’s great to see some of the ‘young
‘uns’ mixing it with the more experienced vets. A huge and fun learning experience
for both. The
are busting at the seams and a failed attempt to enter a 3rd
team in the comp shows just how keen these boys are. Keep up the enthusiasm guys
– it’s contagious!
Looking forward to the rest of the season in the new year, continuing the current
comps for most and the start of Challenge cup for the men. The BHP Billiton Aquatic
Super Series in January will give our elite players a rest from the spotlight, as we take
a peek at the best polo Australia has to offer. Not long after that, National League
will start (the AFL of Water polo) so there is no lack of awesome polo to watch,
support and aspire to.
We are expecting the Flippa Ballers to come back fit and strong, as we know
swimming is the most popular holiday past time for us Aussies. Kids – show the big
people that you don’t have to come back from the festive
season unfit and frumpy. Rather – use the spare time on
the most important things – your family and your health.
Merry Christmas, Happy New year and all the other
fun filled holiday stuff.
WAIS 2014 Coach of the Year
Congratulations to Triton’s very own Flippa and senior
Women’s coach Paul Oberman for being awarded
WAIS 2014 Coach of the Year. Although he was
surprised at the honour, I am sure most who know him
were not. An extract from the WAIS newsletter…
WAIS men’s water polo coach Paul Oberman earned the WAIS Coach of the
Year Award, for his outstanding service across a range of areas. Oberman led
an U18 WA side to a national carnival win, whilst mentoring a series of young
athletes into the senior Australian team, a set-up he himself, is an assistant
coach within. Oberman was also commended for his ability to manage regular
travel without compromising the effectiveness of the training base at home in
Perth.
The 1992 Barcelona Olympian expressed surprise at winning the award, but
thanked his family for their support and paid special tribute to fellow WAIS
Coach Michelle Wilkins, for her "mentor” role and friendship, saying if he could
be half the coach she is, he’d be very proud.
NTC Challenge
Triton was recently represented at the NTC
Challenge. The NTC Challenge is a competition for
the Institutes of Sport or Academy of Sport in each
state, playing against each other over the course of two weekends (Sunshine
Coast and Sydney).
Gen Longman represented WAIS in the Women’s competition and Joshua
Zekulich and Tim Putt represented WAIS for the Men. The women placed 3rd,
with very close matches played against both NSWIS and QAS the eventual gold
and silver medallists.
A young WAIS Men’s team finished a very credible 2nd to NSWIS. The Men had
two wins each over QAS and the combined VIS/SASI team. It was a close final
for the boys after being blown away in both earlier games against NSWIS, 16-5
and 16-4. NSWIS only wriggled free in the last quarter and eventually won
10-6. Georgina Kovacs and Paul Oberman were the coaches of the two teams.

Congratulations to these talented young people for taking on such
challenges and performing so well. Triton members are all very
proud of you, and your dedicated coaches.
Flippa Ball
Flipperball has been going well this season with approximately 50 kids at each
session and most of them having a great time playing games and learning new
water skills!
The coaches have also been great with Paul, Glenn (GT), Damon and Jemma
and also some older kids all helping out; it’s a great atmosphere!
We have a very busy finish before we break up for Christmas, with a
competition this weekend at HBF stadium and also additional games against a
Singapore side on the following Tuesday.
Then the final session prior to Christmas on Sunday 14th December, will the
traditional parents vs kids games and hopefully this year the parents might be
competitive!
Flipperball will resume on the first Sunday in
February, just before the start of term 1 (1st
February).
Hope everybody has a great Christmas and
holiday and see everybody next year.

Remind your family of the five S’s
NUTRITION TIPS
Fighting Fit & Firm Following your Festive Fun
Planning is the key!
 Eat regular meals. Skipping meals can leave you starving and you may
overeat on the first thing you see.
 Sit down for a healthy breakfast. Whole grain cereal with fruit and
yoghurt. Whole meal toast with avocado and
tomato.
 Poached or scrambled eggs on toast.
 Omelette (try 2 whole eggs and 2 egg whites) with
mushroom, onion, capsicum etc.
 Special holiday breakfast – pancakes with lemon and
sugar or strawberries and yoghurt. Cherries and other
stone fruit made into fruit salad. Trimmed bacon, egg,
mushrooms, tomato and toast.
Having breakfast satisfies you - leaving you less likely to indulge in chocolates,
nuts, lollies, mince pies etc that people love to offer this time of year.
Christmas or New Year lunches can often be as late as 2 or
3pm. Have a sandwich, or crackers, or yoghurt and fruit to
tide you over. If this is the main meal, follow up with a
lighter, more lunch-like meal in the evening.
Special treats……..
 Pork crackling – should be a RARE treat! Scrape the fat from the
underside of the crackling and choose just a small (but especially good
and crunchy) piece.
 Gravy – make it low fat with Gravox or if a guest use sparingly.
 Include salads even with hot meals. Fresh and light,
they fill you up, provide essential nutrients and you
tend to eat less of the stodgy foods.
 Pudding – skip it if you are too full. If not have a small
amount. Pair it with fruit salad. Maybe save it for a late
supper or tomorrow’s morning tea when you will, no doubt
enjoy it more.
Do not be bullied…”oh you MUST have Aunty Joan’s plum pudding!”
Smile and decline. Or have a teaspoon to taste it or serve some and promise
to keep it for later. Remember, you are the one who will have to do those
extra laps to compensate – NOT Aunty Joan.
Try some of these lower fat options any time of the year:
Eggplant dip
French Onion Dip
Gravy 1
Gravy 2
Potato Bake
Roast potatoes 1
Roast potatoes 2
Potato salad
Rice Salad
Coleslaw
Christmas desserts and treats
Watch alcohol…..again….don’t be bullied. If you are having morning or
lunchtime gatherings, maybe go for a soda and juice, low Cal
softie or fresh water. Maybe just join in the champagne toast
and leave it at that.
Sip a glass of wine slowly – no one notices if it’s your first or not.
Perhaps decide on 1 or 2 occasions where you’d really like to indulge with
select people rather than every drink on every occasion at any time of day!
Get moving!

Start the day with a walk, trip to the beach or bike ride.

Walk of the meal rather than sleep it
off. If it’s hot, swim. Play ball games at the beach
or pool.
 Organise an activity with someone else early the
next morning and remind yourself how unpleasant it will be with a
hangover!

The more you can do over your rest/holiday
time to exercise and eat well, the easier it will be to
get back to your peak fitness and domination in the
pool.
 Remember that every bite is potentially an extra butterfly lap!
 Let’s all come back fit and fighting for lots of 2015 water polo action.
