Make it Happen
The Inspiring Story of an NCAA
Wrestling Champion
by author, Scott Conroe.
When Ohio State wrestler
Mitch Clark won the national
collegiate championships at
177 pounds in 1998, he reached
a life’s dream after years of
overcoming obstacles that were
personal, athletic, geographical,
and acts of fate.
Mitch Clark knows what every
high school and college athlete
endures in pursuing goals,
balancing sports with everything
else, feeling pressures, and
finding what makes one strong
- and capitalizing on it. He tells
his story, and offers his thoughts
on being an athlete, in his new
book, Make It Happen: The
Inspiring Story of an NCAA
Wrestling Champion (White
Pillars Press,130 p). The book
was written by Scott Conroe, a
longtime sports writer.
This soft-cover book, fully
illustrated with color and blackand-white photographs, is filled
with advice not just for wrestlers
but for all athletes.
Clark, now an assistant coach
for the Ohio State wrestling
team, explores the challenge
of being an athlete on top of
everything else in life; the
pressures of being ranked,
undefeated, or just plain
well-known; the deep level of
focus called “in The Zone;” the
training techniques that made
him a champion; the inner work
of learning your limitations and
building on your strengths; and
the idea of doing what you must
to be the best you can be. It’s the
story of a father and son, mother
and son, of a family and a sport,
and of a young man whose
spirit was tested again and again
before he reached his goal.
I hope you enjoy our book.
- Scott Conroe
“Make It Happen is the story
of a young boy’s quest to fulfill
a dream. Mitch Clark writes
with clarity and great honesty,
describing what it really means
to be a wrestler, from his
early days of kids’ wrestling
up through becoming an
NCAA champion. I thoroughly
enjoyed the book, and highly
recommend it to anyone who
has the courage to dream and
the determination to make the
dream come true. Mitch’s story
is an inspirational one that
young athletes can certainly
learn from.”
- Mike Chapman, executive
director of the International
Wrestling Institute and Museum,
four times National Wrestling
Writer of the Year, founder of
W.I.N. Magazine
“Make It Happen is a compelling
story of disappointment,
sacrifice and perseverance.
Mitch’s enthusiasm for the sport
he loves becomes contagious.
His advice is appropriate and
his personal struggle to the
top is very motivating. Make
It Happen is a must for anyone
aiming to reach the top of the
podium, regardless of their
discipline.”
- Kendall Cross, Olympic
Champion
