Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is considered the formative figure in the modern fight
for civil rights, and his legacy looms large in the work of all those who follow
him in his cause. Dr. King's involvement with the NAACP dates back to his position on the executive committee of the NAACP Montgomery Branch in the
1950's, through his leadership in the various boycotts, marches and rallies of
the 1960's, and up until his assassination in 1968. In 1957 the NAACP
awarded him the Spingarn Medal, its most prestigious honor. In 1964, he received a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. Dr. King pushed America to fulfill its
promise of equal rights for all. We honor his life and his legacy by recommitting
ourselves to keeping his dream alive.

Springfield, IL hosted its Annual MLK Unity March and Program
Jan. 19, 2015 with the Faith Coalition, the Divine Nine, Ministerial
Alliance and One in a Million. A voter registration drive was conducted
at the event. At the program there was a discussion of what Dr. King
would say about Mike Brown and Eric Garner as it relates to racial
injustice.

Springfield, IL NAACP hosted a special screening of the movie “Selma,” on Jan. 11, 2015. More than 95 people participated.

LANSING, MI MLK LUNCHEON
Lansing, MI’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission held
the 30th Annual MLK Holiday Luncheon Celebration, Jan. 19, 2015.
Henry “Hank” Thomas a founder of the Student Non Violent
Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and one of the first Freedom
Riders in 1961 was the keynote speaker. Yvonne Young, President,
Lansing NAACP and 13 Branch members attended along with
Jonathan McKinney, Regional Field Organizer.

17, 2015 in Mequon, WI. Bassett’s organization seeks to
minimize financial hardships that arise as a byproduct of
environmentally-focused energy policies that fail to consider
resulting risks and harms.

“VOTING RIGHTS IS DR. KING’S LEGACY!”

2015. in Mt. Vernon. More than 300 people attended the event
Rev. Erie Patton, President, Jefferson County NAACP said that
difficult conversations were necessary to make progress. NAACP
Equality Awards were presented to Crossroads Community Hospital,
and Samaritan Regional Health Center. Dorothy Parker and Richard
Heck received Special Recognition Awards and three students
received NAACP High School Honor Roll Education Awards.
Welcomes were given by Mayor Mary Jane Chesley, County Board
Chair Bob White and County Board Member James Malone.

Celebration Jan. 19, 2015. The Voting Rights Act
was a major part of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr.’s legacy, Reide said . Restoring the voting rights
act’s enforcement provisions was necessary after
they were weakened by the Shelby v. Holder
Supreme Court decision. Reide called on everyone
to honor Dr. King’s Legacy and join the 21st century
civil rights movement-join the NAACP. “Our nation
is in the midst of the most aggressive attempt to roll
back voting rights in more than a century. This effort
is unprecedented, it is coordinated, it is well, funded
and it is targeted. It's aimed at African Americans,
it's aimed at women, it's aimed at young people, it's
aimed at old people, and it's aimed at poor
people.”Reide said.

NAACP'S JACQUI PATTERSON AT RENEW WISCONSIN
Jacqui Patterson, Director of Environmental and Climate Justice,
NAACP delivered a keynote presentation to an audience of
renewable energy attendees at RENEW Wisconsin's Energy Policy
Summit "We Mean Business' on January 9, 2015 in Madison,
WI. The purpose of the Summit was to inform, engage, and inspire
those in attendance with the vast potential of renewable energy to
invigorate Wisconsin’s economy and help it compete for new
business ventures, while stimulating job growth and protecting the
environment.

Activation Network (VAN) for more than 100

VOTER ACTIVATION NETWORK (VAN)
The Voter Activation Network (VAN), is an online
interface where organizers can access data about
registered voters, unregistered community
members, volunteers and supporters. Finding the
people you want to talk to (your targets) and using
their contact information for voter engagement is the
focal point of any electoral, civic engagement or
issue campaign. The VAN can be used to find the
people that you want to engage, and to then help
you make phone calls, knock on doors, or send
mail, and then track the results.

Glenda Ritz, Indiana's Superintendent of Public Instruction addresses NAACP activists on
Indiana State Conference Legislative Day,
Jan. 29, 2015 in Indianapolis. Ritz wants the
Superintendent of Public Instruction to remain
the chair of the State Board of Education. Ritz
opposes the State Board taking over local
schools and school districts.
