PART 1 – GENERAL:
SCOPE:
Work includes materials, delivery and installation of steel library shelving of the Starter/Adder
and bracket type only. Furnish and install all shelving units as specified.
SUBMITTALS:
Product Data: Manufacturer’s descriptive literature shall be submitted, indicating materials,
finishes, construction, and installation instructions and verifying that product meets
requirements specified. Manufacturer’s recommendations for maintenance and cleaning shall
be included.
Shop Drawings: Submit installation plans and elevations of each type of shelving.
Samples: Submit samples of paint finish (which will be used for actual production) and acrylic
end panel material to the Architect / Interior Designer for verification and approval prior to
ordering.
QUALITY ASSURANCE:
Warranty: Manufacturer’s standard form in which the manufacturer agrees to repair and/or
replace shelving components for a period of five (5) years from the time of installation. Said
warranty shall replace or repair any component that fails its intended use under normal usage
and/or develops finish problems under standard use.
Supplier: The manufacturer, subsidiary, or licensed agent shall be approved to supply the
products specified, and to honor any claim against the product presented in accordance with
the warranty.
Vendor/Installer: The installer shall be affiliated directly with vendor. The installer shall be
qualified to install the specified products by prior experience, demonstrated performance and
acceptance of any requirement of manufacturer or any subsidiary or licensed agent. The
installer shall be responsible for acceptable installation. References shall be provided to the
Owner with Proposal Submission.
DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING:
Product shall be delivered to the project site in manufacturer’s original packaging. Product
shall be handled and stored to prevent damage to materials and finishes.
SEISMIC:
Billings, Montana is considered to be in a Seismic Design A designation.

2.01- Quality Assurance
A. Only the finest materials and quality of workmanship will be acceptable. Sheet metal
is to be cold rolled, Class I steel. Gauge thickness shall be U.S. standard with the following

B. All shelving shall be carefully adjusted to the floor and leveled. Wall shelving shall be
attached to the walls at the most inconspicuous.
2.02 – Basis of Design Stack Shelving
Steel book stacks shall be cantilever with Starter/Adder frame assemblies as manufactured by
Estey/Tennsco Corporation, Dickson, TN. Weld frame unit construction is not acceptable.
Commercial or case-type shelving will not be considered. Any bracing that prevents insertion
of oversize material (past the center line) on any base or adjustable shelf is not acceptable.
2.03 – Approved Equals
Manufacturers offering Starter/Adder Frame products that comply with the requirements shall
meet or exceed specialized library shelving systems as manufactured by:

2.04 - Material Components
Individual standard (cataloged) components to be as follows:
A. Upright Columns are formed from no less than #14 gauge tubular steel. Overall
dimensions are 2-1/2” in the web and 1-1/2” across the front and rear surfaces.
Uprights are perforated the full height with a series of 5/16” x 5/8” slots spaced on 1”
vertical centers and located ¾” of the outer web surface to the center of the slot. All
slots are rectangular in shape to allow ease of installation and resting shelves. Every
fifth and sixth slot has a rounded top for visual alignment of shelves. Side slots are
located at the top, bottom, and middle of the upright with a special design allowing the
strut to lock in place. Base supports are welded into place creating a single upright
and base support assembly, with leveling bolts at each end of the base support.
B. Top and Bottom Spreaders are formed of no less than #16 gauge steel in a
channel shape, measuring 1-1/3” x 4-11/32” in cross section and attached to the
uprights by means of pressure lock system and secure cover, insuring any possible
walking of strut from the upright.
C. Integral Back Adjustable Shelves are forged of no less than #18 gauge steel and
support book loads of 50 pounds per square foot without deflection in excess of 3/16”.
Nominal depth of shelf shall be 1” greater than the actual dimension measured from
front of the shelf to frame upright. The front edge of the shelf to be box formed a
minimum of 13/16” high to receive an under shelf, front edge mounted wire book
support or snap-on label holder if required. The rear edge of the shelf shall be
upturned a minimum of 2”. Side of shelf to be flanged for locking into end bracket
grips. End brackets shall be no less than #16 gauge steel and extend at least 6” above
the shelf surface.
D. Shelf Accessories shall consist of 6” findable book supports and be made of not less
than 18 gauge steel and include a non-skid composition cork base.
E. Periodical/Newspaper Shelves shall be pivoting display shelves hinged to shelf
brackets, which engage in slots in upright. Sloped display shelves are 14” actual
height with 1-5/16” flange at the bottom and boxed flange upwards with an inside
safety hem. Standard storage shelf is 12” deep nominal. Brackets allow for a slope of
approximately 20 degrees from vertical. Newspaper sloping shelf shall include a
hinged plexi-glass flap for paper security. All shelves to have integrated label holder.

F. Media/AV Shelving shall consist of zigzag and browser style shelving. Browser
shelves shall be no less than #16 gauge steel, 12”d x 6”h with 5-dividers and rubber
non-skid mat. Zigzag shelves shall be no less than #16 gauge steel, 7”d x 8”h with 5integrated sections.
G. Slotted/Adjustable Divider Shelves shall be slotted on 1” centers to accommodate
dividers. They should include 5” backs, brackets, and (5) 9” dividers per shelf.
H. Integrated Shelving Light Brackets shall consist of no less than #12 gauge steel.
Lighting T-arm shall measure 5’-6” with each arm measuring 2’-9”w with the channel
tapering from 2” at the upright to 1” at the end. The center post shall be an open
channel and inserted into the top of the upright for ease of electrical wiring.

2.05 - Finishing Application
All parts are thoroughly cleaned, neutralized and given a slight etch for adhesion. The final
coat shall be epoxy powder applied by electrostatic method. The finish must yield a minimum
average thickness of 1.0 to 1.8 mils and has a metallic finish. Abrasion resistance requires a
minimum of 60 liters of sand to remove finish to bare metal and withstand rigid hammer and
180 degree fold test without flaking.
2.06 – Color Selection
Paint Color shall be Pioneer Powder Coatings #HC32-2D6-M, AZ Satin Stainless Silver.
Plastic upright plugs shall be grey.
2.07 – Basis of Design Acrylic End Panels
Stacks end panels shall be Lumiclear Acrylic by Lumicor. The end panels should provide for
resistance to UV degradation and be a renewable surface. Sheet thickness should be a
minimum of 3/8” with a standard eased edge. The edges should be finished to a gloss.
Product, color and finish shall be S022708 Lumiclear, Clear / .354”, 133469 Frost/Frost.
Refer to drawing for panel sizes and attachment point locations.

PART 3 – EXECUTION
3.01 – Installation
A. Bookshelf Units: Install units at locations shown, in continuous ranges made up of
The number of units shown, complying with the manufacturer’s instructions. Set units
plumb and level, use non-corrosive metal shims as required.
B. Anchor single faced ranges less than 12” deep and over 42” in height to the wall
using manufacturers recommended method.
C. Install adjustable shelves at equal spacing unless otherwise indicated.
D. Vendor shall install product. Installation services shall not be brokered out.
3.02 – Adjustment and Cleaning
Verify that moving parts are operating freely. Clean exposed surfaces and touch up
marred finishes or replace components as necessary to eliminate evidence of deterioration.

Mobile Shelving Systems. Furnish and install all mobile carriages and shelving units as specified.

Product Data: Manufacturer’s descriptive literature shall be submitted, indicating materials,
finishes, construction, and installation instructions and verifying that product meets requirements
specified. Manufacturer’s recommendations for maintenance and cleaning shall be included.
Shop Drawings: Submit installation plans and elevations of each type of shelving.
Samples: Submit samples of paint finish for shelving units (which will be used for actual
production) and plastic laminate for end panels to the Architect / Interior Designer for verification
and approval prior to ordering.

5-YEAR LIMITED WARRANTY - Manufacturer warrants that all equipment, other than structural
frames, shall be free from defects in materials and workmanship for five (5) years from the date
of written acceptance of installation. Labor is included at no cost during the 1st year of the
warranty period and will be charged at current rate thereafter.
LIFETIME LIMITED WARRANTY – Manufacturer warrants that the mobile carriages (“structural
frames”) will be free from defects in materials and workmanship for the lifetime of the structural
frames. “Structural frames” exclude all moving parts, controls and guides that have immediate
contact with any moving parts.
Supplier: The manufacturer, subsidiary, or licensed agent shall be approved to supply the
products specified, and to honor any claim against the product presented in accordance with the
warranty.

2.02 – Basis of Design Compact Mobile Shelving System
Mechanical assist compact mobile shelving system shall be Dual Flange Line Shaft High Density
Mobile Shelving System with B Anti-Tip Rail as manufactured by Spacesaver Corporation, Fort
Atkinson, WI.
MOBILE SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
A.
General: The system consists of manufactured storage units mounted on manufacturer’s
track-guided carriages to form a compact storage system. System design permits access
to any single aisle by manually moving units until the desired aisle is opened. The
carriage/rail system provides uniform carriage movement along the total length of travel,
even with unbalanced loads.
B.
Carriage System Design and Features: The carriage system consists of a formed structural
steel frame with machined and balanced wheels riding on steel rails surface mounted to the
floor. Rails shall be B Anti Tip type to ensure smooth operation and self-centering of
mobile storage units during travel without end play or binding. All bearings used in the
drive mechanism shall be permanently shielded and lubricated.

Movement Controls: Triple operating wheels (single arm handles not permitted) with
rotating hand knobs shall be provided on the accessible (drive) ends of shelf units,
centered on the end panel, located 40 inches from the base of each unit to permit units to
be moved to create a single aisle opening. Turning the handle transmits power through
chain drive to drive wheels on each carriage.

Drive System: The system shall be designed with a positive type mechanically-assisted
drive which minimizes end play, ensures there is no play in the drive handle, and that
carriages will stop without drifting.

System shall include a chain sprocket drive system for each movable carriage to
ensure that carriages move uniformly along the total length of travel, even with
unbalanced loads. All system components shall be selected to ensure a smooth,
even movement along the entire carriage length. Drive system gearing shall be

designed to permit 1 lb. of force applied to the drive handle to move a minimum of
4,000 lbs. of load.

A tensioning device shall be provided on each chain drive with provision for adjusting
tension without removing end panels.

Safety Features:

Color-coded visual indicators shall provide verification that carriages are in a locked
or unlocked mode.

A single safety lock button, mounted on each operating wheel hub, will permit
moving a carriage in either direction to create a new access aisle when pulled out
(unlocked), or locking the carriage when pushed in.
Finishes:

paint finish.

Wedge-lock type consisting of uprights, shelves, and shelf supports, designed to be
assembled without fasteners or clips. Shelves shall not have any holes on exposed
surfaces. Front and back flanges shall be flush with outside faces of posts. Design
shall permit individual shelf adjustment and/or removal anywhere along the entire
height of uprights.
Materials and Workmanship:

Fabricate units from Class 1, cold-rolled steel sheet with all bends sharp and true and
no exposed “knife” edges.
a. All units shall be free of burrs, sharp edges and projecting hardware with
smooth, non-abrasive surfaces and edges.
b. After fabrication, shelving shall exhibit no dents, “oil canning”, buckling or
other surface irregularities.

Uprights:

Formed from steel sheet to a hollow “tee” shape for intermediate supports and
formed angles for end supports. Uprights shall have keyhole slots on inner wall only.
Provide with sheet steel panels full height and depth of end uprights. Provide
intermediate “tee” uprights between adjacent units. All uprights to be “closed”
uprights.

PART 3 – EXECUTION:
3.01 – Installation
A.
Vendor shall install product. Installation services shall not be brokered out.
B.
Installation to be completed by a factory certified technician.
C.
Access to the building shall be coordinated with the General Contractor who has full control
of the project site.
D.
Vendor shall be responsible for removal of all packaging material from the project site.
E.
Vendor to provide (2) cans of touch-up paint for future application.
3.02 – Adjustment and Cleaning
Verify that moving parts are operating freely. Clean exposed surfaces and touch up marred
finishes or replace components as necessary to eliminate evidence of deterioration.

CMS-01 System Description – Mechanical Assist High Density Mobile Shelving System

Mobile shelving system should be designed to store library books and/or supplies related to the everyday
operation of a standard public library. System should be designed per attached drawings and should
have/include the following:

(8) Mobile Double Faced Movable Carriages with 4-Post Shelving. Each carriage to have (2) 36” wide
sections of 4-Post shelving. Each Carriage to be 20 ½” wide and have 20” deep shelving (10” useable
each side).

(1) Stationary Single Faced Shelving Range mounted on a Platform. A platform or fixed unit is similar to
a carriage but without wheels and is made of the same material as a carriage. Shelving mounted to the
platform is to be the exact height as shelving on moveable carriages. Stationary range to be 10 ½” wide
and have 10” deep shelving. Stationary shelving range to have (2) 36” wide sections of 4-Post
Shelving.

Stationary Shelving range on platform to be mounted and anchored to the platform and be mounted to
wall with wall mounting anchors for added rigidity.

2 Rail System – System to have (2) B Anti-tip Rails and are to extend under platforms and to be bolted to
platforms for added rigidity. Rails to be laser leveled based on the levelness of the floor. Rails to be
anchored to the floor and adhered to the floor using grout. The use of shims is not permitted.

Seismic Anti-Tips to be attached from carriages to rails.

Wood Deck and Ramp – A wood deck and ramp is to be installed under the carriage and in-between the
rails. Wood deck and ramp to extend all the way across the length of the rails and underneath the
stationary platform.

System to have (1) Aisle – 33 3/4” wide (to be field verified)

High Pressure Laminate End Panels to be on stationary shelving range and moveable carriages.

3-Spoke Ergonomic Handles to be located on each moveable carriage. Single spoke handles are not
permitted.

Rubber floor covering to be furnished and installed by General Contractor. Rubber roll goods shall be
3.2 mm thick. Assure that wood deck and ramp are manufactured to account for this thickness.
Coordinate the installation of the rubber roll goods with the General Contractor.

4-Post Adjustable Shelving. Shelving to have standard 4-Post Shelving. Shelving to be adjustable
vertically on 1 ½” increments. Shelving shall not require bolts, nuts, cross bracing, etc. to be
assembled. Shelving upright angles and middle tees to be closed (not open).

Each moveable carriage to have (2) 36” wide sections of shelving.

Single Face Stationary range to have (2) 36” wide sections of shelving.

Each section to have 6 levels of storage with minimum of 11 ¼” of clearance between each shelf.
Some elevations to have 12 ¾” clearance. See drawing for details.

Uprights to be 76 ¼” tall. Total system height to be no higher than 83 1/16” from the concrete floor to
the top of the canopy tops on shelving.

Single Faced shelving to be 10” deep and to have Backstops on each level. (2) adjustable File Dividers
to be located on each shelf. File Dividers to be adjustable horizontally on 2” increments.

Double Faced shelving to be 20” deep pass-thru shelving and to have Centerstops on each level. (2)
adjustable File Dividers to be located on each side/shelf. File Dividers to be adjustable horizontally on 2”
increments.

System to have Pull Out Reference shelves located throughout the system. Pull Out Reference shelves
to be located on the “3rd” opening of each shelving section and pull out similar to a work table. Each
reference shelf able to hold a maximum of 50 lbs. System to have (1) single faced Reference Shelf
located on single faced shelving range, and a total of 8 double faced Reference Shelves located on
moveable carriages. (See drawings for locations).

Capacity – System to have a total of 578 lineal filing feet of book/supply storage (6,936 lineal filing
inches).
