Welcome! - CS Lewis Academy
Welcome!
Thank you for your interest in C.S. Lewis Academy. CSLA, founded on Christian
precepts, offers a superior educational experience in both academics and biblical
principles. Our motto, “Preparing Students for Life,” reflects our unwavering belief that
it is through the nurturing and development of the whole person that life’s great leaders
of integrity and intellect are born.
The curriculum at C.S. Lewis Academy is designed specifically to that end and offers
students a well-rounded learning environment. In addition to a strong core
curriculum, we focus on what we refer to as the “4 C’s” of education – Christian,
contextual, career, and character.
C.S. Lewis Academy is accredited by the Northwest Accreditation Commission and has
earned national awards for several of our programs. Whether our students are serving
in the local soup kitchen, going to the state championships in athletics or qualifying as
a National Merit Scholarship finalist, they consistently demonstrate personal excellence
and take pride in themselves and their peers.
We are excited to share C.S. Lewis Academy with you and look forward to meeting with
you personally to discuss how we can work together to help your student achieve his or
her educational goals.
In His Service,
Mike McConaughey

Who We Are
C.S. Lewis Academy
Preparing Students For Life
C.S. Lewis Community School was founded in 1985, and then renamed C.S. Lewis
Academy in 2002 after merging with a private high school, Chehalem Valley Academy.
In 2013, Open Bible Christian School merged with us and we are excited about our
growth and the opportunities that come with it. Our commitment to excellence in
every dimension of a student’s education has positioned us as one of the most
recognized, longest standing private institutions in Yamhill County. As a member of
the Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC), our operational guidelines provide
measurable standards to ensure the highest quality and most beneficial environment
for its student body.
Our Community:
Although the majority of CSLA students come from Yamhill County (namely Newberg,
where it is located), it draws students from neighboring communities, including
Dundee, Sherwood, Hillsboro, McMinnville, Lafayette, St. Paul, Donald, Beaverton,
Tigard, Gaston, and Portland.
Our Mission Statement:
CSLA is committed to providing an education that is challenging and responsive to
individual needs; preparing students for life in a safe, nurturing environment that
fosters character development and spiritual growth based on biblical truth.
Our Belief:
CSLA is founded upon and functions on the fundamental principles of the Word of
God. While these principles are infused in our school and instruction, we also believe in
fostering a climate where spiritual seeking and questioning is welcomed, and where all
can experience a loving environment regardless of where an individual is in their
spiritual understanding or beliefs.
Winner of Exemplary School Program awarded by Association of Christian Schools International
Recognized as a National Promising Practice in Character Education by the Character Education Partnership

Spiritual Life
Preparing Students For Life
Our philosophy is based on a God-centered view that all truth is God’s truth. Our aim
socially is to provide a worldview from which will come a balanced personality and
proper understanding and acceptance of a person’s role in life at home, work, play, and
worship, all grounded in the Christian concept of love and truth.
Our goal is to impact students spiritually, mentally, intellectually, physically, socially,
and emotionally. Our purpose is not for reformation, but for raising up young men and
women to Godly service, to train them in Biblical principles, responsibility, proper
behavior, and citizenship, in order that they may grow to be strong Christian leaders in
the future. This is achieved through Christ-centered teachers integrating God’s Word
with a high quality academic program and by providing students the opportunity to
develop their spiritual gifts and ministry skills.
We teach our students about Christ through:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Weekly chapel services led by teachers, students, and guest leaders
Daily prayer in the classrooms
Bible classes and integration of biblical tenants within classroom instruction
Community service projects and drives
Student chaplain program in the 6th – 12th grade
Optional mission trips to foreign countries
Daily interaction with our dedicated faculty and staff whose love of Christ is
reflected in all they do and teach
“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but
because by it I see everything else.” - C.S. Lewis

Academics
C.S. Lewis Academy
Preparing Students For Life
PreK - 5th Grade
At the elementary level, our faculty provides students with a safe, nurturing
environment ideal to meet the tremendous need for discovery and the quest for
answers during this period. These critical years help pave the way for future successes
as the fundamentals of all disciplines are presented and explored. As students begin to
integrate solid moral and character concepts into their awareness, they learn to respect
and value those around them and work in positive, affirming ways with others.
Gently guided by our highly skilled faculty, students explore their world both in and out
of the classroom. Corn snakes, bearded dragons, baby chicks and other animals are
residents of our large, colorful and well-equipped grade school classrooms. Field trips
and outings are used to celebrate the wonder of our world and provide additional
contextual learning experiences, and enrichment classes in science, music, art,
computer, and physical education supplement core studies.
6th – 8th Grade
Change and growth are the hallmarks of our middle school students. The unique
characteristics of this age group are given special attention by our middle school
faculty. Students at this age develop greater self-awareness and confront a wider range
of choices, and our goal is to help our students navigate successfully through this
transition into young adulthood, as well as recognize the value and worth of all
individuals.
Our middle school students raise butterflies and visit the universe via the Star Lab.
They participate in Outdoor School, a three-day camp designed to build a strong sense
of community and teamwork within the three grade levels while celebrating creation
and exploring science with hands-on activities. The students also have the opportunity
every other year to participate in a guided educational trip to Washington D.C., and
they also join our high school in collecting food from the community for the local food
bank.
In middle school, students have a choice of electives each quarter. Although class
offerings vary from year to year, some examples of electives are:
Lego Robotics ● Construction ● Art ● Choir and Drama ● Band
Green Team ● Law and Criminal Justice ● The Stock Market
Our middle school students also participate in a three-year rotation of special research
projects. Over the course of their middle school experience, they will have participated
in Science Fair, Career Day, and Night of the Notables, a fun and educational look at
influential persons from history.

9th – 12th Grade
During grades nine through twelve, we continue to build on our sense of community and care for each
other, as well as the larger world around us. Students begin to prepare in more concrete ways for their
future, studying world literature and history, mathematics, upper division sciences, and languages. They
will prepare college and scholarship applications and essays, create resumes and participate in interviews
and internships, as well as have opportunities to explore personal interests and talents through our
electives and extra-curricular activities. Qualities of biblically-based leadership, moral integrity and
reason are modeled and instilled by our faculty to equip our students for academic and life-long success.
High school begins each year with a three day camp, which is designed to help students build positive
relationships with their peers and the faculty through teamwork and fun activities. Throughout the year,
we balance our rigorous academics with activities that further build on that connection, creating events
that all can participate in and that help build memories that last a lifetime. All of our high school
students also participate in SCOP, our award-winning community outreach program where the students
help the community in a variety of ways such as yard work for seniors, collecting food for the local food
pantry or helping build a new park.
Students will also have the opportunity to participate in travel, including the Shakespeare Festival in
Ashland, international mission trips, or Europe through our Literature program.
