It is currently occupied by creative industries, including a jeweller and the large scale One Plus 2 Artist’s Studios. Pilcher’s Bakery 1907 – 1926 Frederick Elias Pilcher arrived in Sydney in 1882, aged seventeen. He reputedly followed his father and grandfather into the bread-making business. A newspaper described the bakery in 1907 as: ‘…almost opposite Callan Park and covering…a larger area than any other in the Commonwealth’.4 …As you enter from the front, you find yourself in the loading yard with a brick floor, 94 x 26 feet, at the side of which are the public office and private offices, also built of brick, and fitted with gas, telephone, etc. The bakehouse is a very fine, lofty and well-ventilated room, 74 feet by 25 feet, with a granolithic floor. It is fitted with five ovens…The bakehouse is two storied and the upper level extends over the lane which connects the loading yard with the stables. The whole of this floor is used as a flour store and for blending purposes. The stables are lofty and well ventilated, with accommodation for thirty horses… The bakery was then sold to “The Automatic Bread Baking Company” in 1927 who developed the first automated operation in Australia. The old bakery was extended and upgraded into as a fully automated bakery producing ‘hygienic wrapped bread at ordinary prices’. In 1937, The Union Bank of Australia sold the property to Abbco Bread Company Pty Limited (a derivation of the Automatic Bread Baking Company) who continued to operate the bakery. 2400mm In 1990 the bakery was sold to C.H Laboratories Pty Limited and converted for use as a laboratory.
