Fundraising Catalogue 8 2 In this the first year of our nation’s five-year-commemoration of the Great War we are proud to offer our Centenary Fundraising Collection. The world has changed much since the first fundraising silk poppies were sold immediately after the war to support returned soldiers, their families and others left destitute by that war to end all wars. Our collection reflects the symbolic and respectful tradition of the poppy but delivers the options and choices demanded in today’s society. With national and local events and media planned over the Centenary, this is a collection to capture people’s desire to understand and connect to our military history. The new ‘Australia in the Great War Collection’, is especially created to support Centenary activities and there are great opportunities for community engagement, school visits, awards and novel fundraising options. TO WOMEN OF AUSTRALIA. FOR DUTY DONE”. During the Second World War a single all-services badge was issued and included relatives of those serving in the Merchant Navy. This badge reads simply “TO THE WOMEN OF AUSTRALIA”. The badges, worn proudly by mothers, sisters and wives of those serving, were not automatically issued but had to be applied for through the local post office. Each reproduction with chain and clasp is housed in an acrylic display case with a printed sleeve that tells the story of the individual badge. Just before Armistice in 1918 she read John McCrae’s immortal battlefield poem, ‘In Flanders field’ and decided to wear a red poppy always as a way of ‘keeping faith’, as McCrae had urged. The idea so inspired the French YMCA secretary, Anna Guérin that Anna declared she would sell red silk poppies to raise money for widows, orphans, and needy veterans and their families. Moina, Anna and others promoted the poppy’s symbolism and fundraising opportunities to all Allied nations and soon red silk poppies, fashioned by French orphans, were sold across the world and a tradition of fundraising and the red poppy as the flower of remembrance was born. Australia’s first poppies were sold for Armistice Day 1921. The Australian So Returned Soldiers and Sailors Imperial League imported one p million poppies and from the shilling sale price donated p five pence to a charity for French children, while the rest we to support the League’s work in Australia. went P Professor Moina Michael went on to be a great educator, yet will always be remembered simply as “The Poppy Lady”. She died aged 74 years on 10 May 1944.
