Didn’t “60 Minutes”
Miss the Real Subprime Story?
On Sunday, August 19 “60 Minutes” stated that
the 2008 failure of Lehman Bros., triggered the
chain reaction that caused the global financial/
economic crisis of the past four years. CBS’s Steve
Croft presented detailed interviews to support this
claim, but nowhere was it mentioned how the federal government dating back to Jimmy Carter’s
administration mandated banks to make loans
to folks with poor credit and that this created a
glut of subprime mortgages that went toxic when
the housing bubble burst in 2006-2007. Doesn’t
the public have a right to know this? Why does
the media continue to hide this relevant information from TV viewers?
President Obama likes to demonize Wall Street
because it is such an easy target. Croft didn’t ask
where all the subprime mortgages came from and
were Lehman and Wall Street really to blame.
Bear Stearns, buried in subprime mortgages, imploded five months before Lehman in 2008. The
Federal Reserve fearing a bigger crisis engineered a fire sale buyout by JPMorgan Chase partly
funded by billions in taxpayer dollars. With hindsight, we now see that the glut of subprime loans
was a toxic virus that had spread through the financial market.
Where did the glut of subprime mortgages come
from? Wall Street wasn’t responsible. It was the

GOP Platform, “We Believe in America”
POLITICAL AMBITION
During
these
modern
times we think of ambition
in connection with a strong
desire for success, without
giving too much thought to
the origin of that word and
its appropriateness when
used in reference to politics.
The Latin word “ambitio” or
“ambitionis” means to go
around, or to campaign by
lawful means. “Ambitus” is
probably more literally expressed in Latin as “a going
about” and was generally associated with canvassing.
There was a time in ancient Rome when the “plebs”
or common people established a distinct class of citizen. Because of the great
increase in the number of
these plebs, it was necessary for political candidates
to expend a considerable
amount of time and effort to
secure votes. Solicitation of
votes, secret influence and
even bribery were resorted
to in order that a candidate
might secure his election to
office and history reports
evidence of some vague
ground rules regarding lawful or unlawful means that
might be used to secure
those votes.
A person seeking office
was called a “pefitor” and he
referred to his opponent as
a “compeditor.” These candidates “canditaoria” often
appeared in public places
dressed in white clothing
“candor” which stood for sincerity and frankness. During these times the candidate was accompanied by his
friends, well wishers and
financial supporters. One or
more of others who assisted
the candidate were called
“nomenclators.” The nomenclator’s job was to identify
those persons who were encountered so that the candidate could address them by
name. This was considered
a compliment, and never
failed to impress the voter.
The usual handshake was
called “prensatio,” while
treating the voter with feasts
or entertainment was called
“benignitas” or “benignum.”
Any money paid for votes
was arranged under strict
secrecy by persons called
“interpretes,” the loot was
handled
and/or
held
by “sequestres.” and it was
eventually distributed by
“divisores.”
It is most shocking to discover that such shenanigans went on during those
ancient times, however, it is
also most gratifying to know
that none of this is practiced
today.

Pop culture dominates the
landscape of the American
mind, so it’s no surprise that
the title of Republican Party
Platform adopted this week in
Tampa echoes a well known
movie opening line. The Platform is a dense document
that, like The Godfather, reveals more upon repeated
viewings, and, like many serious works of prose, says as
much by what it leaves out
as by what it spells out.
We all know that, despite
of all the distractions thrown
up by the mainstream media
in their frenzy to re-elect
President Obama, the only
issue in this campaign is
JOBS. Who can get Americans back to work at salaries
and wages that make possible the American Dream.
Current weak business conditions and unacceptably
high unemployment and underemployment have many
causes, but everyone — that
is everyone outside of the
Washington, D.C., echochamber — knows that one
of the main reasons is our
failed trade policy.
Let’s look at what the GOP
Platform and Mr. Romney
have to say on trade policy.
The document contrasts
Republican policy with the
course pursued by President
Obama. It praises, “The Free
Trade Agreements negotiated with friendly democracies since President Reagan’s
trailblazing pact with Israel
in 1985,” and charges, “That
record makes all the more
deplorable the current Administration’s ... failure to
pursue any new trade agreements with friendly nations.”
This is true. The U.S. still
maintains tariffs on imports
of goods from Western Democracies, such as Italy, however
President Obama is aggressively pursuing a Free Trade
Agreement with Vietnam, an
authoritarian state ruled by
the Communist Party, which
his own State Department acknowledges as one of the
worst violators of human
rights. Mr. Obama is also pursuing a Free Trade Agreement with Brunei, an Islamic
state where most criminal
activity is defined and punished according to draconian
Islamic sharia law. According
to the State Department it is
illegal in Brunei to teach
Christianity and violators can
be fined or imprisoned. Education in Islam is required by
law in Brunei.
The Platform also condemns the ways some governments unfairly “limit
American access to their
markets while stealing our
designs, patents, brands,
know-how, and technology —
the intellectual property that
drives innovation,” and cites
as the chief offender, China.
The current Administration’s
way of dealing with all these
violations of world trade standards the GOP Platform characterizes as “virtual surrender.” This is true. Many reputable economists have calculated that China’s manipulation of it’s currency to maximize exports and minimize
imports gives that nation an
unfair advantage of at least
35%, yet President Obama
has, repeatedly, refused to
name China as a currency
manipulator or file a complaint with the World Trade
Organization that China is
illegally distorting trade
through her currency policy.
This Administration’s lack of
action of China’s theft of
American intellectual property is appalling.
This Labor Day weekend,
take a few minutes away from
the cookout and fun with
friends and family to look at
the two presidential candidates and their platforms. Ask
yourself, Which one offers
working men and women of
America the best plan to create jobs that allow you to raise
a family and be proud of your
contribution to society, and
which offers bigger government and more dependency
on government hand-outs instead of the dignity of a job.

A Preview and a Review of
SOI CULTURE LECTURE SERIES
Yearly, it has proven most difficult to contact professionals during humid August. They
commonly make the bridge of vacation (fare
il ponte) until after Labor Day. This year has
continued the cycle. However, within these
past few days, helped by some early probing,
I have been able to confirm September
through November speakers.
On Monday evening, September 24, James
Forti, an accomplished genealogist, founding member of the Italian Genealogical
Society of America and director and past
president of the South Shore Genealogical
Society will speak on the basics of an Italian
genealogical search.
On Monday evening, October 29,
Dr. Spencer DiScala of UMASS Boston will
speak on his publication, “Vittorio Orlando:
Italian Representative to the Paris Peace
Conference of WWI,” the unjust treatment
received by Italy at the Conference and
Orlando’s futile efforts with President W. Wilson. DiScala impressively debunks the
myth of the lack of courage in the Italian
soldier as well as the implanting of the seed
of Fascism because of the Peace Conference
decisions.
On Monday evening, November 26, it will
be my pleasure to introduce Dr. Nancy
Harrowitz of BU, Romance Language Chair,
who will speak on the life and fascinating
publications of Primo Levi, brilliant chemist and writer who, as an Italian-Jew from
Torino, survived Auschwitz to write of his
experience only to die under questionable
circumstances, possibly because of his life’s
anguish. A riveting story discussed by an
expert.
This September will inaugurate a seventh
season of my Culture Series as part of my
mission as Commissioner of Culture for
the SOI. It has proved most rewarding to
witness audience fulfillment and satisfaction, my gratitude at having met some
very knowledgeable speakers and the satisfaction of a modest effort at disseminating the best of our Italian heritage. In the
past six years I have very much enjoyed
and appreciated more than fifty excellent
and qualified speakers and musicians of
the Italian language and culture from
academia, business and the general
public.
The planning is often difficult, but worth
the effort. Finding expert speakers, the
search for common dates, venues, stipends,
refreshments, advertising, equipment and
videotaping all require coordinated effort.
Attempts to share this wealth of speakers
with other lodges continue to be a daunting, fruitless effort. However, visitors from
other lodges, as well as the general public
to Burlington, have shown consistent growth
in the past two years.
May of 2013 will complete my tenure as
Commissioner for the SOI. I intend to retire
to the pleasures of reading history, art history and literature. I can offer a hand and
abundant advice to anyone committed to a
love of the Italian language/culture, from
any lodge or organization, for initiating a comparable sequel to this Culture Series. The
value and worth of a committed search and
ordered presentation of gifted speakers or
experts in the Italian language/culture are
inestimable in the dissemination of our precious worldly heritage.
Please feel free to contact me at
[email protected] for a suggested list of
speakers for your lodge during Italian Heritage Month or later. Watch our Grand Lodge
website OSIAMA.org for information on guest
speakers in the New Year or our own lodge
website BSOI2223.org.

THINKING
OUT LOUD
by Sal Giarratani
We Are Now Inhabiting the
Island Where the Lords are Flying
This society of ours, it’s
cultural and value system
are disappearing in front of
our eyes and most of us have
become so sedated that we
are oblivious to what has
been happening. The recent
rant of Mayor Tom Menino
over a fast food chicken
place opening up in Boston
around the corner from
Faneuil Hall and the Quincy
Marketplace looked like a
piece of fiction. There was
the mayor of Boston, where
the American Revolution
was born, talking about how
the owner of this chicken
joint is messing up the Freedom Trail by using his 1 st
amendment rights. “The
whole purpose of freedom is
to invite dispute”, was spoken many years ago by a
former U.S. Supreme Court
Justice named William O.
Douglas, who was one of the
most liberal judges ever to
sit on the High Court.
Perhaps, it was the period
in which I was born into
back in the first few years
after World War II had ended.
There was an American
value system. We believed in
certain ideals and principles. Most were never
spoken, but we knew and
understood what they were.
It didn’t matter if we lived in
the spacious countryside or
in a crowded urban ethnic
neighborhood, we shared
commonality with one another. Little by little things
started changing, but most
of the change went unnoticed. Little things like
people leaving the American
flag out to soak in the rain.
This was something unheard of back in my younger
days. Everyone knew how
and when to fly Old Glory.
Today, in the name of
political correctness, we live
on separate islands having
slight contact with one
another. Growing up, life
seemed so intrusive at
times, but at least it showed
someone was caring about
life swirling around them. I
can remember in school
being handed mandatory
reading lists of books that
we must read. The other day
I passed by a little magazine
stand in a hospital waiting
room and saw a little paperback on top of the table. I
recognized it almost immediately. It was “Lord of the
Flies” by William Golding.
The price on the book said
$1.25, which was how much
I paid for it over 40 years ago.
Back then, I thought it was
interesting, but just a piece
of fiction. Human beings
stranded on an island would
never turn so brutally on one
another. We wouldn’t do what
those kids did. However,
looking at life around me
today, we have already seen
the “Lord of the Flies” seemingly all the time. Brutality
abounds. Who would have
thought someone would walk
into a crowded movie theater and start shooting up
the place. Life seemed so
simple back in the ’50s and
early ’60s and to some
extent even into the late
’70s, but over 40 years now
we have developed into a
country I hardly recognize
anymore.
In the City of Chicago,
dozens die every weekend
due to needless violence and
people ending up in the wrong
place at the wrong time.
There was a recent police
shooting out in Oakland, CA
and the reaction to it was
several nights of violence
and looting as if it were a
normal reaction to something that happened. Here
in Boston, the mayor got
himself injected into a story
about a fast food chicken
joint. He doesn’t like the
political views of the company’s owner, so he wants
to get out of Dodge by sundown. In the old days customers would just avoid
those places that acted stupid about anything.
I can still remember President Obama back at the
2004 convention that nominated John F. Kerry. Part of
the future president’s keynote address spoke of America. He said it wasn’t Blue
America or Red America, but
the United States of America.
Today, thanks to our great
leaders, I am reminded of
two other books I have read.
One was “1984” and the
other was “Brave New
World.” As I listen to those
words all over again, I imagine everything that George
Orwell was thinking about
from a society of so much
control over us. The “1984”
novel and the memories of
World War II were still in the
memories of most Americans. Dictators tried taking
over the world and lost. The
author, George Orwell, showed
danger where others saw it
not. A government that
takes care of your every need

Does the judge have the authority
to reduce a plea agreement sentence?
COMMONWEALTH vs. MARCOS RODRIGUEZ
SJC-10825
SUPREME JUDICIAL COURT OF MASSACHUSETTS
960 N.E.2d 245
September 7, 2011, Argued • January 12, 2012, Decided
Background. The defendant was charged with
possession of a Class B substance (oxycodone) with
intent to distribute, in violation of G. L. c. 94C, § 32A,
and possession of a Class D
substance (marijuana) with
intent to distribute, in
violation of G. L. c. 94C, §
32C (a). 2 On November 19,
2009, the prosecutor and
the defendant, through his
attorney, entered into a plea
agreement. Under the agreement, the Commonwealth
would not seek indictments
on these charges, the defendant would plead guilty to
the two charges in the
Boston Municipal Court
Department, and the defendant would agree to the
Commonwealth’s sentencing recommendation of concurrent committed terms of
two and one-half years in a
house of correction. That
same day, the judge accepted
the defendant’s guilty plea
and sentenced the defendant
in accordance with the
plea agreement. However,
the judge later questioned
whether the sentences he
imposed were unfairly severe, and on his own motion
ordered a hearing under rule
29 (a) on January 6, 2010, to
consider whether the sentences should be revised or
revoked. Immediately after
the hearing, the judge revised and revoked the sentences, and sentenced the
defendant to concurrent
terms of two years in the
house of correction, with one
year to serve and the balance suspended for two
years. The prosecutor moved
to reconsider, but the judge
did not act on the motion.
In other words the judge
reduced the plea agreement
sentence. The prosecutor
appealed.
The court said: the judge
has the authority to reduce
the sentence.

The court said: It is not unfair to the Commonwealth to
allow a judge to revise a sentence where justice otherwise “may not have been
done.” The defendant did not
obtain a lesser sentence
through a breach of the plea
agreement; the defendant
presented the agreed recommendation to the judge and
did not move to revise or revoke under Rule 29. And the
Commonwealth
obtained
what it bargained for: the
defendant pleaded guilty and
agreed to the prosecutor’s
recommendation. The Commonwealth should have recognized that its agreed recommendation was made
“with the specific understanding that the recommendation shall not be binding upon the court.”
Conclusion: The case is
remanded to the county
court for the entry of a judgment denying the Commonwealth’s petition.
So ordered.
This case says that the
judge does not have to accept
a plea agreement between
the defendant and the
prosecutor.
A Saint well known to
mothers who have prayed
unceasingly for the welfare
of their children is Saint
Monica. Little is known of
Monica’s early life. We know
that she was born of Christian parents at Tagaste, in
North Africa in the year 333.
Monica was given by her parents in marriage to a man
named Patritius who was a
pagan and said to have had a
violent temper. Three children were born of their marriage, Augustine being the
eldest, Navigius the second
and a daughter Perpetua.
Patricius would not allow
their children to be baptized,
but when Augustine fell ill
he relented only to withdraw
his consent on Augustine’s
recovery. Augustine was
sent to Madaura for his early
education. Monica became
increasingly anxious for her
son who was wayward and,
as he himself tells us, lazy.
It was during this period that
Patritius became a Christian as a result of the virtu-
ous life of his wife, Monica;
he died one year after being
received into the Church.
Augustine, in order to further his studies, was sent to
Carthage where he became
a student of rhetoric. It was
while at Carthage that he
became a Manichean, when
later he returned home and
proclaimed the heretical beliefs of the Manicheans,
Monica rebuked him. She
then consulted with a bishop
who famously consoled her
by saying to her, “the child
of those tears shall never
perish.”
Monica followed Augustine
to Rome, on her arrival she
learned he had departed for
Milan. She then followed
him to Milan where she
came in contact with Saint
Ambrose. Through his influence on Augustine, her
prayers were answered, and
after seventeen years of resistance, Augustine finally
relented and was baptized on
Easter eve at Milan in the
church of St. John the Baptist in 387. Soon after,
Monica and Augustine set
out for Africa, stopping at
Cività Vecchia and at Ostia
where she became ill and
passed away. It was as a result of the emotions he experienced at her passing
that he wrote some of the finest pages of his incomparable work “The Confessions
of Saint Augustine”. Saint
Monica’s feast day is August
27; she is the Patroness of
Mothers.

Doesn’t Anybody Know Where We’re At?
by Sal Giarratani
Hey when I was a kid growing up, my father who came
from Sacred Heart Parish always told me that the elevated North Station stop by
Canal Street was in the
North End and that everything leading up to Keaney
Square was also the North
End, including the old Stop
‘n Shop Bakery at the corner of North Washington and
Causeway Streets. When we
would take the stairs down
at North Station to Haverhill
Street, my father called it a
North End Street too. Back
in the 70s when I used to
eat at the old Francesca’s at
90 North Washington Street,
everyone called it a North
End
restaurant.
North
Enders who live on Thatcher,
Cooper, Endicott and North
Washington Street itself
found themselves blindsided
when
Boston
declared
Medford Street in the West
End. Folks with North End
stickers have been parking
on Medford Street for years
never knowing apparently
they had been parking in
another neighborhood. Back
less than two months ago,
the Boston Transportation
Department rolled onto
Medford Street putting up
“West End Resident Parking
Only” signs making all their
North End parking stickers
surprisingly meaningless.
When I was a kid growing up
for a while in the North End,
I believed, as many North
Enders still do today that
Canal Street is the actual
border line. After all, wasn’t
the old relief station at
Haymarket Square always
considered in the North End?
I found out from numerous
sources that when the developer of the old bakery
building wanted his Strada
residential complex, City
Hall officials reportedly told
him he couldn’t call his build-
ing a North End residence.
Apparently, the city was concerned that Strada residents
might try parking across
North Washington Street by
Filippo’s. Now, a longtime
North End building is no
longer that which then explains why those “West End
Permit Parking” went up so
quickly this summer.
Hey, if they can call
Medford Street and the
Strada building the West
End, what else can they do?
Perhaps, people in East
Boston might be happy if
Logan Airport moved to
South Boston. City Hall can
make that happen just by
putting new parking permit
signs declaring the neighborhood change. Hey, how
about trading Monument
Square for Eagle Hill in
Eastie? Just send over
those BTD trucks with the
new resident parking permit
signs. While I’m at it, isn’t
the Union Oyster House on
Union Street still in the
North End today or has the
city moved them too?
Back in the 1950s when
I was in the first grade at
St. Anthony’s living on
Salutation Street, everything across Commercial
Street and Atlantic Avenue
was just the North End.
Perhaps, it is best to leave
the geography of a neighborhood to the folks who
actually live there rather
than
some
bureaucrat
who doesn’t know the North
End from Falmouth. Finally,
does moving Medford Street
into the West End by City
Hall fiat mean that Christine and Carla Pallotta will
have to rename NEBO into
WEBO?
North Enders should not
have been blindsided by City
Hall on all this stuff. Sounds
like somebody pulled a fast
one here, eh?

Mrs. Murphy . . . As I See It
Enjoy your Labor
Day weekend!
It’s been a glorious summer, do
something special to end the
season with a bang! ... With
the $400,000 non-refundable fee paid to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission I feel it’s a done deal.
Optimists are hoping that a
new casino will ease the
money pain, help the local
economy and lessen the tax
burden. That is, unless
some politicians have other
ideas on spending the mitigation money! Which could
lead to lots of disappointment among constituents ...
Prez Barack Obama is something else! He began his
term on charisma, with
no experience, and he still
doesn’t show experience.
He’s brought no constructive
improvements to the table.
The country is headed in a
downhill spiral. The change
he promised was bogus, his
only successes have been in
turning the country socialist. These past four years
have been devastating to so
many people. NO job creation, NO future, and a dismal outlook for college graduates faced with numerous
loans, and NO JOB. The
country is in turmoil, and
Obama’s only concern is that
his opponent hasn’t revealed
all ten years of tax returns.
Obama’s claim to fame is to
keep everyone on Welfare
and Social Security (the easy
life). The President has done
very little, if any, to improve
the economy, and appears to
be against small business.
He’s done even less to
reduce the war, in fact he’s
escalated it. It’s been reported, and proven that
Obama stalled the capture
and killing of Osama bin
Laden (WHY?)!!! If it weren’t
for Hillary Clinton pushing
for Osama Bin Laden’s capture, the 9/11 engineer of
the Twin Towers massacre
would still be alive today.
And, talking about the
Middle East war that Obama
promised to end in his 2008
campaign. Well folks, the
war is still going strong. In
Afghanistan, American soldiers are being killed by
members of the Afghanistan
Army that are supposed to
be our Allies. So many unanswered questions: Why
aren’t Americans protesting
an end to the war in the
Middle East??? ... School is
starting in East Boston!
There will be lots of children
walking to school, and school
buses loaded with children
driving through the streets.
Please pay attention, and
“Drive with Caution”!!! ...
Congratulations to Santarpio’s Pizza at the corner of
Porter and Chelsea Streets
who recently won Boston
Magazine “Best Pizza” award.
Santarpio’s is truly a vintage
business in East Boston with
lots of history. The pizza and
barbecue restaurant attracts
as many tourists as it does
locals. There’s no frills, just
a down to earth pizzeria that
has become an international
success. Italy’s best can’t
stack up to Santarpio’s Pizza
.... East Boston is getting
to be more and more the
place to live. Besides having
some of the best restaurants, childrens programs,
and adult activities, Eastie
has a charm all her own!
The piers along the waterfront being developed; Central Square improvements
(shortly underway); the
Emerald Necklace expanding, (the most exquisite,
stunning skyline and harbor
views from the Piers Park on
Marginal Street). East Boston residents will be the envy
of many other urban cities.
Steps to Boston via the
MBTA, with ferry service
into the North End. Move
over South Boston, Eastie’s
taking over as one of the
most attractive places to
live! ... Revere’s cup is runnith over with newcomers,
as is the case in many
urban cities in America.
(Many of them illegal nontaxpayers, living off the government supported by our
tax dollars). With that being
said, Massachusetts State
School Board Authorities are
asking the City of Revere to
build more schools, and
rehab others with new additions, labs, computer rooms,
and updates etc. Putting
another burden on the taxpayer. One target of the
MSBA is the Revere High
School built less than 40
years ago during the former
Mayor of Revere Billy Reinstein administration. The
school has had problems
from day one, and many
scandals surrounded the
construction of the school at
that time. However, Revere’s
new Mayor Dan Rizzo stepped
to the plate by informing
the MSBA that unfortunately
Revere doesn’t have the
financial resources to embark on such a building
program at this time! ...
What Revere needs is less
low income housing, more
people paying taxes, and a
stop to fraud using the
system to live! ... Till next
time!

who after having a camera
planted into his brain, is
hired by the producer of the
TV series ‘Death Watch,’ to
film a documentary of Katherine without her knowledge. A deeply moving and
fascinating look at society in
decay, and poignant as well,
knowing that Schneider
herself died tragically two
years later.

wields ultimate power in
“the world’s playground.” After rigging the Atlantic City
mayoral election, Nucky and
young WWI veteran Jimmy
Darmody appear to be in control of the city. However,
their grip soon begins to un-
ravel as Nucky is arrested
for election fraud and members of both his inner circle
and family begin to question
their allegiances. Mobsters
like Arnold Rothstein, Lucky
Luciano, Meyer Lansky, and
Al Capone wait in the wings,
looking for the opportunity
to grab a bigger piece of
Nucky’s pie!

BOB DYLAN AND THE BAND
- DOWN IN THE FLOOD
(DVD)
Sexy Intellectual
In 1966 Bob Dylan began
his first electric world tour.
It was a landmark moment,
both for Dylan and for the
history of rock music, and it
bitterly divided his audience.
Backing Dylan on stage was
an obscure group of Canadian musicians collectively
known as The Hawks. In
the months following the
tour they would join Dylan
during a lengthy convalescence in New York’s Catskill
Mountains. When both parties emerged Dylan had
undergone an artistic transformation, and The Hawks
became ‘The Band’ — one of
the most important recording groups of their generation. Together, the duo also
made legendary amateur
recordings in Woodstock.

“TAKE BACK THE
STREETS” SHOULD BE
MORE THAN SLOGANS
The recent violence in our
neighborhoods hurts so
much. As the first of three
women gunned down sitting
inside a car is laid to rest,
the clergy and families ask
for violence to stop. At numerous rallies, we hear politicians like Mayor Menino
or folks like Police Commissioner Ed Davis saying we
must take back our streets
from those that have turned
the place into a killing field.
Speeches and sound bites
give little hope because
actions speak louder than
words. At the funeral for
Sharon Perkins, Rev. John
M. Borders from Morning Star
Baptist Church in Mattapan
stated, “We have to expose
the people, call names of
those who run in gangs,
those who commit violent
acts must be exposed to the
light … We cannot be afraid
of exposing what we know to
the authorities … We need
to learn to report all suspicious activity like we report
a suspicious bag of luggage
at an airport.” Rev. Border’s
strong sermon was answered
with a loud “Amen!” However, amending a sermon
isn’t enough. It is far past the
time for people to lament at
funerals and then forget
everything 24 hours later
like it never happened. A
neighborhood is a community and a community is a
shared experience. This
means everyone is in it together. Things will be as
good as we want them to be
and as bad as we allow them
to be. Stop b*^%$#& and
start doing. The police react
but only the people can act.
DEMOCRATS GO
NEGATIVE ON TISEI
Former State Senator
Richard Tisei, R-Wakefield,
was a very effective state
senator in his Senate district and also an effective
Republican leader up on
Beacon Hill. Two years ago,
he was Charlie Baker’s running mate for lieutenant governor. This year he is running for U.S. Congress up in
the North Shore against
embattled U.S. Rep. John
Tierney, D-Salem, who is
mired in a family scandal
gone federal. His family’s legal troubles have cast a pale
on his re-election campaign
as he basically started acting and sounding like
Sgt. Schultz from “Hogan’s
Heroes.”
The Massachusetts Democratic Party has launched a
two-pronged attack on Tisei
over Tisei’s family’s past
legal issues. They have put
up a website, www.Tisei
Facts.com. Republicans have
their own website, www.How
CouldTierneyNotKnow.com.
Also, Tisei just unveiled another website, www.Tierneys
Tales.com devoted to calling
for an ethics investigation of
the eight-term Tierney.
I AM BACKING
BETH CHILDS
AGAINST BIELAT
Over in retiring U.S. Rep.
Barney Frank’s District the
Republicans are having a
primary
between
Sean
Bielat, who almost took down
Frank two years ago and
Beth Childs, a Republican
from Brookline. I’ve known
Childs for over 25 years. I
see her as a moderate Republican. Meanwhile, Bielat
is a hard-line conservative
and Tea Party favorite. I find
him to be a conservative
wing-nut, too far out of the
mainstream for this social
conservative. Can anyone
beat Jo-Jo-Jo Kennedy is
anybody’s guess. Who is the
most qualified in this race
is an open question. This
House district runs from liberal Newton and Brookline
down to Wrentham, North
Attleboro, Plainville to the
Rhode Island border, which
is much more Republican
country. This district was
once held for decades by
former Republican Speaker
Joe Martin from North
Attleboro.
I will be rooting for Childs
in this race. Hopefully, she
will go on to that matchup
with the Kennedy Dynasty.
WALGREENS WANTS
WHAT IN
DOWNTOWN CROSSING?
Walgreens is hoping to
open its Boston flagship store
this fall in Downtown Crossing at the old Borders Bookstore site across from the
Old South Meeting House on
Washington Street. The Illinois drugstore chain is
seeking to sell alcohol.
There’s a law in Boston preventing drugstores from selling cigarettes because smoking is bad for you. I don’t
think alcohol sales seem
appropriate for a drugstore
either. If you can sell beer,
why not sell cigarettes too?
Supporters included the
Midtown Park Plaza Neighborhood Association as is the
Downtown Boston Bus-iness
Improvement District folks
too. Rosemary Sansone is
the president of the latter
group and stated, ‘We feel
they are a reputable company … With a growing number of residents in the district, it’s important that a
number of options be offered
to them and the Walgreens
emporium will do just that.”
Besides beer, Walgreens
stated it will be selling
smoothies, sushi, wraps,
salads, sandwiches and the
usual drugstore goods. I
guess that means, like, prescription medicines, which
is what a drug store is supposed to do, huh?
“NO REPRESENTATION
WITHOUT TAXATION”
The above was an actual
bumper sticker seen by me
over in the Peoples Republic
of Jamaica Plain. Apparently
those politically correct liberals have completely forgotten
why we went to war against
Britain and King George. Did
they also forget the Boston
Tea Party, Bunker Hill and
they seemingly forgot the slogan, “No taxation without
representation” too.
The other day I heard U.S.
Senator Scott Brown on the
radio warning all listening
that come New Year’s Day,
all Americans would wake up
with huge tax increases unless all of us storm the gates
of Capitol Hill. We need to let
Capitol Hill know we want
them to act quickly to stop
those coming tax hikes.

THE INVENTION OF FANTASY
EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY VENICE —
Through September 30, 2012. Venice
in the eighteenth century, the age of
Casanova, was one of the pleasure
centers of Europe, famed for its theater
and opera and its carnival maskers.
Even today, the city, when compared
with ordinary cities, appears to be a
fantasy, a dream, a hallucination.
Giovanni Battista Tiepolo’s voluptuous painted cloudscapes with figures opened illusionistic lightfilled vistas in ceilings; his drawings
and prints have a comparable aerial
lightness and luminosity. He was
assisted by his son Domenico, who,
when he retired from painting about
1785, concentrated on making finished drawings on biblical and mythological themes, as well as remarkably
playful and whimsical scenes of
Venetian daily life. The Museum’s
The Milliner’s Shop is one of the finest
of these drawings. Other artists in
the exhibition include Canaletto and
the early Piranesi.

Recipes from the
Homeland
by Vita Orlando Sinopoli
So here we are on the last day of the
month! And so comes September, on the
eleventh day of the month we will be mourning another birthday. Yes, we are truly a
bona fide old man! So here we are wondering why we have lived so long. Well, to avoid
old age, keep taking on new thoughts and
throwing off old habits. For the record, I no
longer buy green bananas!
Out in the open! Superstar Rock Hudson,
who died of AIDS at age 59 in 1985, was a
moody, bad-tempered wife-beater who got
married to cover his homosexuality and
then cheated on his wife with oodles of guys.
Those are the bombshell revelations dropped
by his ex-wife Phyllis Gates in an interview
that only recently surfaced when she blew
the lid off his secret double life and Jekyll &
Hyde personality. Phyllis says while Rock
appeared thoughtful, easygoing and romantic in his bedroom comedies like Pillow Talk
and Lover Come Back with Doris Day, he was
a selfish lout at home. “The Rock Hudson
you see on the screen is very romantic, but
the Rock I lived with was not,” Phyllis
reveals. “I had to divorce Rock. He hit me.
Used me. Ignored me. He was a spoiled child.
This was the man I married.” Amazingly,
his gay life remained secret until 1985,
when he became the first major star to
admit he had AIDS. He died later that year.
Rock Hudson was cremated-not interred.
Other notables who were cremated: Desi
Arnaz, Bud Abbott, Fatty Arbuckle, Jean
Arthur, Cliff Arquette, John Barrymoore,
Charles Bickford, Richard Boone, Yul

Stevens, and Guy Williams. Enough of this
hot subject! And the woman with the great
legs Betty Grable (James) is buried at
Inglewood Park Cemetery, Inglewood, California. Yes, Harry James, her husband is
also resting his chops there. Enough about
this deadly subject.
Speaking of deadly subject, it has been
reported the comic legend Sid Caesar, 89,
is basically an invalid — attended by nurses
‘round the clock — as he faces his sad last
days, sources say. His nurses do everything.
Once a strapping 6-foot-2 bundle of energy
known for his physical comic antics, now
spends his days in bed or in a wheelchair
lacking the strength to “do anything on his
own,” says an insider. The comic icon, who
turns 90 September 8, starred on the live
TV program Your Show of Shows and The Sid
Caesar Show in the 1950s. The courageous
comic was “devastated” in 2010 when
Florence Levy, his wife of nearly 57 years,
passed away. Caesar called her his “Rock of
Gibraltar” and praised her for saving his life.
Pay attention! Eating almonds fights liver
cancer! Packed with vitamin E, almonds
slash the odds of getting liver cancer,
researchers say. With liver cancer the third
most common form of the deadly disease in
the world, a paper published in the Journal
of the National Cancer Institute revealed the
more vitamin E you take the less your cancer risk. The take-home message? Almonds
and other vitamin E-loaded foods or supplements “lower the chance of liver cancer in
middle-age or older people,” say study
authors.

womanizing Bill has done over the years.”
According to the astute and attractive
Tierney Clement, dancing is the art of getting your feet out of the way faster than your
partner can step on them.
Things we discovered about the fabulous
singer Celine Dion, 44, is that her toothy
smile earned her the nickname “Vampire
Queen” in high school. She first met Rene
Angelil, who became her mentor, manager
and in 1994 her husband, when she was 12
and he was 38. She is three months younger
than her stepson Patrick Angelil. She’s been
named the biggest water utility user along
Florida’s Treasure Coast, consuming 6.5
million gallons in a year at her lavish Jupiter Island home that includes a water park!
And Celine is a self-confessed shoe addict
with around 3,000 pairs. Wow!
Mama mia! The number of first-time
mothers over 50 has soared by 375 percent
over the past 10 years, say U.S. government
statistics. The trend has also been bolstered
by women who have put off having children
to pursue careers and establish financial
security. These women eat better, exercise
more and can pay for the better health care.
Still, experts warn, pregnant 50-somethings are more likely to develop medical
complications and to have children with
birth defects, like autism.
The charming Rosalie Cunio of Waltham,
says, “The joys of motherhood are never fully
experienced until all the children are in
bed.”
The brilliant Helen LePage of Winthrop,
says, “The young mother gets along beautifully with her mother-in-law because she
probably can’t afford a baby sitter.”
And the wonderful Lucille Monuteaux,
Office Manager of the lively East Boston
Social Centers, says, “The old-fashioned
mother who used to have prunes every
morning now has a granddaughter who has
dates every night.”
Carlo Scostumato claims mothers can
have a few minutes to themselves at the
end of the day by doing the dishes.
Sing! Sing! Sing! More than 90 percent of
Americans belt out tunes to keep themselves company in the car! Rock songs are
most popular among the sing-on-the-road
crowd. Older Americans seem to prefer country music to warble at the wheel, according
to the survey of more than 1,000 drivers
conducted by Music in Motion. The survey
also revealed that women sing more than
men, with redheads comprising 53 percent
of all car singers.
So what do you sing as you drive? “Vicin’
u mare?”
Show business reminiscing with the
handsome, stately, ageless, musicologist
Albert Natale. When he was only twenty-one,
Russ Morgan was arranging for John Philip
Sousa and Victor Herbert, and later became
a member of the Detroit Symphony. Composer Cole Porter’s wealthy grandfather, J.O.
Cole, tried to stop Porter from being a composer and did not accept it even when he
was obviously a success. Porter was perhaps
the greatest songwriter of the century.
Trumpeter/singer/bandleader Louis Prima
first studied violin but took up trumpet on
his brother’s spare instrument. He is the
composer of the Benny Goodman 1937 classic “Sing, Sing, Sing.” And when Frank
Sinatra and Harry James first recorded “All
or Nothing At All” in 1939, it sold an insignificant eight-thousand copies. Four years
later, it was re-released and became an instant best seller in 1943. During the Big
Band Era, many, if not most of the live big
band broadcasts on radio came at night, between eleven p.m. and two a.m.

VEAL CUTLETS P
AlMIGIANA
PAlMIGIANA
TOMATO SAUCE:
1 twenty-eight-ounce can of
crushed tomatoes
1 eight-ounce can of tomato
paste
1 medium onion chopped
1 garlic clove chopped
(optional)
1/3 cup vegetable, canola or
olive oil
1 teaspoon dried basil, or
3 fresh basil leaves
1 pound mozzarella cheese
(whole piece or shredded)
Grated Parmesan or Romano
Cheese
Salt
Add chopped onion, garlic (optional) and basil to heated
oil in saucepan. Simmer until onion is opaque. Garlic should
not brown. Add crushed tomatoes and a half-cup of water.
Stir thoroughly. Cover and bring to a boil. Lower heat and
simmer for about fifteen or twenty minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking to the bottom of saucepan. Add
tomato paste and stir thoroughly. Fill empty tomato paste
can with water. Add water to sauce and stir. Salt to taste.
Cover pot. Simmer slowly over low heat for another thirty
minutes. If desired, additional water can be added to thin
sauce.
VEAL CUTLETS:
2 pounds thinly sliced veal
2 cups flavored bread crumbs
1 or 2 beaten eggs
1/2 cup of olive, canola or
vegetable oil
3 paper plates or some white
paper towels
Place prepared breadcrumbs in a bowl. Beat eggs in a
separate bowl. With a fork, dip a slice of veal into the beaten
eggs. Place veal into bread crumbs to cover both sides of
meat with the crumbs. Set aside in a separate plate.
Continue in this fashion with each veal slice.
TO FRY: Heat 1/4 cup of oil in a skillet. Place breaded
veal slices in heated oil and brown on both sides. Remove
from skillet and place on a paper plate, which will absorb
excess oil. Then place cutlets on a serving platter. Continue
frying in this fashion. Add more oil to skillet if needed.
TO BAKE VEAL CUTLETS PALMIGIANA: Spread some
tomato sauce over bottom of 8" x 10" baking dish. Add one
layer of cooked veal cutlets to the baking dish. Cut up
mozzarella cheese into 1/4 slices and place over each cutlet.
If using shredded mozzarella cheese, sprinkle over each
cutlet. With ladle, spread tomato sauce over mozzarella
cheese. Sprinkle grated cheese of choice over tomato sauce.
Cover and bake in preheated 350°F oven until the cheese
melts (about eight to fifteen minutes). Use a spatula to serve
the Veal Parmigiana. Top each serving with tomato sauce.
OPTIONAL: Include pasta of choice topped with tomato
sauce to each serving. A vegetable salad and garlic bread
go well with this.
Remaining sauce freezes well.
NOTE: Mama prepared Veal Parmigiana often when she
expected visitors after dinner at our cottage in Wilmington. We
ate dinner between twelve and one o’clock in the afternoon.
On many occasions the afternoon visitors remained until
suppertime. Mama felt comfortable having something extra
prepared to serve for supper. She warmed up leftovers for those
who desired them along with her Veal Parmigiana.
During the summer, Papa went into his garden and picked
some fresh lettuce while Mama selected a few ripened tomatoes
and cucumbers to be added to the salad she served to everyone.

POST-GAZETTE, AUGUST 31, 2012
Last week, I was talking
about following in the footsteps of the men in my family, becoming a musician.
Babbononno had studied
music in the old country and
worked as a guitarist in
Neapolitan-style bands once
he landed in America. He
also played drums and belonged to marching bands
that played Italian feasts
and marched in parades
that corresponded to American holidays. A generation
later, he instructed each of
his sons and prepared them
to become musicians. He
was happy when his daughter began dating a musician
and when I came along, he
was ready to teach the next
generation the finer points
of becoming a professional
musician.
Well, here it is two generations later and I was ready
to take my place in the family business. There were a
few differences in the generation gaps. Babbononno
played the music of his day
and trained his sons to play
symphonic music. His sons,
on the other hand, were
born in America and had different ideas. Uncle Paul
wanted to play Dixieland jazz
and Uncle Nick society
dance music. Uncle Gino
played drums before WWII,
but didn’t return to it
after he returned from the
Pacific. I was the next one
in line. On a given afternoon, when I was young, I
would return home from
school and find Nanna brewing a pot of cocoa while
Babbo-nonno awaited my arrival with two chairs placed
side by side, both facing
a music stand holding a
book entitled, “Solfeggio,
The Rhythmic Articulation
of All Music.” After the cocoa was consumed, I would
sit next to my grandfather,
read the pages of music,
sing out the notes and conduct the rhythms with my
right index finger pointing
forward as is it was a
conductor’s baton. Babbononno would beat out the
notes with a ruler in hand.
If I made a mistake (and
there were many), he would
graze my knuckles with his
ruler baton-weapon. In the
past, when I have told this
story, I’ve mentioned that,
by the time I was twelve
years old, I had knuckles
like a prize fighter.
Between my grandfather,
father and uncles, I experimented with every practical
instrument of the day. I
tried accordion and didn’t
like it. I tried piano and
didn’t like it. I tried clarinet,
sax, trombone, violin, drums
and guitar and didn’t like
them either. I did take to
the trumpet which was an
extension of playing the
bugle in the Joseph H.
Barnes Junior High School
Drum and Bugle Corps. At
some point in high school, I
gave those instruments up,
too. Exasperated, my father
decided to teach me the
bass violin, an endeavor I
took rather lightly. Dad was
happy. Babbononno was
happy. My Godfather, Uncle
Nick was happy. I wasn’t
happy and let things slide as
time went on.
I was sitting on the front
steps of our house one warm
spring day. My freshman
year at college had just come
to a close and I was looking
forward to several summer
ventures. Studying bass violin wasn’t one of them. Dad
wasn’t happy. Babbononno
wasn’t happy. Uncle Nick
wasn’t happy. I was happy.
As I sat on the steps contemplating my activities for
the months of July and
August, a friend walked by
carrying a bass violin on his
shoulder. I asked him what
was going on and he stopped
to talk for a few minutes. It
seems that my friend, also
named John, had enlisted
in a branch of the service
and was selling his bass before he left for boot camp. He
also mentioned that he had
been playing with a band
composed of other neighborhood teens and his departure
was going to leave a void
in their ranks. He added,
“You play bass, why don’t you
take my place with the
guys.” After he continued on
his way, I began to wonder
what it would be like to play
with a band. That afternoon,
I went looking for the unofficial leader of the group to
question him and was welcomed to rehearse with his
ensemble.
When I mentioned this to
Babbononno and Dad at dinner, they were elated that
I wanted to play music,
regardless of what kind it
was. When rehearsal night
arrived, Dad let me borrow
a bass violin and I tried
my hand at sitting-in with
the band. Fortunately, what
Babbononno and Dad had
taught me carried me
through and I was asked to
join the band. From then
on, I was a musician. Dad
rented a bass violin for
me until I was sure I would
stick with the instrument.

When he discovered I was
serious, he bought me
a bass. His comment was,
“I can’t afford to pay for
your college education, but
with this instrument you
can make enough money
to complete school, go to
graduate school and have
enough left over to enjoy
yourself.
Well, I played with the
neighborhood band and
became serious about the
instrument. I added in bass
guitar as time went on to
expand my horizons and
soon left the neighborhood
musicians. As I became
known, the new people I
began working for would pick
me up and we would head
out to play the bookings they
had obtained, weddings,
parties,
anniversaries,
christenings, etc … When I
felt ready, I called the Ken
Reeves office and asked
for an audition. Dad,
Babbononno and Uncle Nick
all thought I was ready and
that’s where last week’s
story began. As I had mentioned, I auditioned for the
Ken Reeves Orchestra, but
was told that I really wasn’t
needed, but within a day
or so, I received a postcard
with several dates listed.
The first date was at
the Manchester Bath and
Tennis Club in Manchester,
Massachusetts. Dave Kahn,
the booker for the band called
and gave me the directions
from East Boston to Manchester, telling me that
the job was a club party and
I was to arrive at least a
half hour ahead of time
wearing a tuxedo. By this
time, I had purchased an old
Chevy and didn’t have to rely
on anyone to pick me up.
When I arrived at the club
and began to set up, I met
Ken Reeves for the first time.
He told me not to shake
hands with any of the men
as this was supposed to be
an organized unit. When the
musicians arrived and set
up, I noticed that I was the
kid. They were all in their
30s, 40s and 50s and as I
found out later, were the
number one musicians working for the Reeves office.
I was a bit scared to say
the least. At 8:00 pm, Ken
Reeves kicked off the first
number, led the band for
about a half-hour with continuous offerings of society
music that we all faked.
There wasn’t a sheet of
music in sight. All of the
tunes were memorized and
thanks to Dad, I knew all
of them. When Mr. Reeves
disappeared, the sax player,
a Mr. Don Ellis, took over and
led the band. All the while, I
received dirty looks from
Ellis as if I was an interloper.
I assumed from his looks
that I either wasn’t playing
well enough or I was taking
the place of the office’s number one bass player, but I
gave it my best shot. To be
continued …

Community Reinvestment
Act of 1977 that told banks
to lower credit standards and
lend monies to low income
communities. The intent
was to spread the American
Dream of homeownership to
all. In 1994, that Act was
amended by the Clinton Administration to expand mandates on banks and to punish banks for non-compliance with the Act. Banks
began to release funds as it
was better for them just to
go along with this government idea. Risky loans were
bad ideas, but it was cheaper
for them to go along and avoid
expensive court battles with
government regulators and
community advocacy groups.
The root cause of the problem now seems clearly to
have been with the U.S. Department of Justice, which
still reportedly continues to
go after banks for failing to
lower credit standards for
lower-income
borrowers.
Seems Croft and “60 Minutes” missed an opportunity
to educate the public and
hopefully avoid a repeat performance
and
CBS-TV
missed its chance to do just
that. What else is new?
Bloodied by
Afghan Betrayal
Why are so many U.S.
troops getting killed by Afghan inside attacks? The
answer is simple enough.
The Obama Administration
had disarmed them while
arming their Afghan trainees, making them little
more than sitting ducks.
With U.S. and NATO troop
deaths from so-called greenon-blue attacks recently
climbed to 100, military
brass have finally reversed
a standing order requiring
troops to remove their magazines from their weapons
while quartered inside bases
with their trusted Afghan
partners.
Rogue Afghan soldiers or
police have too easily gotten
the jump, shooting Americans in cold blood with weapons and ammunitions issued to them by us. In a recent two week period, 10
American soldiers have died
this way. Since the start of
this year, there have been
32 attacks killing 40, many
more than 2011’s total of 21
attacks. Finally, U.S. troops
are once again armed to protect themselves from terrorists and from Afghan security forces they are training.
Obama has reportedly insisted on using Afghans security forces for base security as a way to eliminate
the American footprint in
Afghanistan. It would seem
that Obama’s rush to withdraw in 2014 seems to have
needlessly killed at least
100 American soldiers and
wounded many more.
We the People
Still Rule, Don’t We?
The economic meltdown of
2008 was caused by a combination of government and
Wall Street who are in bed
with one another. Remember the Bill of Rights? Remember July Fourth? Remember those winter Soldiers at Valley Forge? Remember Patrick Henry who
once said, “Give me liberty
or give me death?” America
began as an experiment in
limited government. Today,
our leaders in Washington,
DC have grown too powerful.
Government today seems of,
for and by the powerful interests. The meltdown was
caused by both Washington,
DC and Wall Street banking
interests who seem working
as one and taking care of
each other. We are the government. Those elected by
us are there to serve us.
However, it would seem
things have turned upside
down and we appear to be
working for them. They
work for us.
Our government has grown
leaps and bounds and government as perceived by
the likes of Ben Franklin,
Thomas
Jefferson
and
James Madison has been
taken hostage by advocating for bigger and bigger
government.
Standing Up for America
Students at one high
school in California were
sent home on Cinco de Mayo
because they had the nerve
to wear T-shirts with the
American flag printed on
them. Down in Texas, some
students at a high school put
up the Mexican Flag on the
school’s flag pole. Another
group of students quickly
took it down. Can you guess
which group of students were
expelled? You know, I love
going to Texas, it feels like
another country or maybe
just 40 years ago when
Americans were proud of
this
country
and
her
achievements. People loved
parades, saluted the flag,
stood up for America. However, the closer I got to San
Antonio, the more Mexican
flags I saw flying. It brought
a bad taste to my mouth. I
wondered how many American flags were flown across
the border.
However, for the most part,
Texas reminds me of real
America and that makes
me feel good. Patriotism is
the norm down there even
in the City of Austin, a blue
city in that red state. You
can smell liberty in the air
and you see it in the faces
of the people. Government
comes in a limited edition.
The people rule. If Texans
are lucky in November,
Republican Ted Cruz will be
their newest U.S. senator. If
America is lucky, Obama
can go home to Hawaii or
Chicago or Kenya or anywhere else but the White
House.
Talk 1200 Boston
is Gonzo
I loved listening to Talk
1200 Boston, but they
changed their format to
garbage and now dead air
sounds better than its new
programming. What happened seemed crazy. Rush
Limbaugh went back to
WRKO. I hope someone
picks up Jeff Katz’s show
and what will happen to
Sean Hannity? Meanwhile,
East Boston’s own Michele
McPhee is becoming the
new co-host of WRKO’s
morning drive time show. At
3:00 pm I keep flipping back
and forth between Howie
Carr and Michael Graham.
As for Jay Severin, Jay who?
I will miss the “Great One”
Mark Levin late in the evenings with his crisp com-
mentaries, a guy who gets to
the point as quickly as possible. I hope Boston conservatives will get to hear him
from his underground bunker soon. Meanwhile, 1200
goes 24/7 comedy, which is
a joke in and of itself. If it
wasn’t so sad, it would be
funny.
With the Obama Lame
Stream Media in bed with
the Democrats, all we have
out here in Real America is
conservative talk radio or
Fox News. Meanwhile, more
and more folks are following the Ed Shallow Blog
at www.redmass.com. Also,
tell your friends about the

Boston Herald
Letter Writer ... Right On
Don
Houghton
from
Quincy had a great letter
printed recently in the Boston Herald on that illegal
immigrant who wanted to
become a lawyer in America
after graduating law school
and passing the bar. What
part of illegal don’t California
liberals get? A justice from
the California Supreme
Court wrote a brief in favor
of the illegal for the state’s
Bar Association. As Houghton
wrote, “When the meaning
of “illegal” is not a concern
of judges, you know we are
well over the tipping point of
absurdity.”
Biden Seems Like Such
An ^%$#, Doesn’t He?
Vice President Joe Biden
is giving the Office of Vice
President a worse name than
it already has. He seems
like such an idiot. I remember Vice President Spiro T.
Agnew. I thought he was bad,
but Biden is Agnew without
a good vocabulary. At least
Agnew was entertaining,
Biden not so much. Recently,
the Obama White House offered no apology for Biden’s
dumb “chains” remark.
At a recent Virginia rally
with a mostly African American crowd Biden stated, “That
Romney and Ryan are “going
to put y’all back in chains.”
The Boston Globe called on
Biden to apologize for his
remark in an August 18 editorial, but the deputy press
secretary for the Obama
campaign said Biden had
nothing to apologize for in
his remarks.
Apparently, Biden can say
anything and get away with
it because he’s just being

NOTICE TO TRADE CONTRACTORS
REQUEST FOR TRADE CONTRACTOR QUALIFICATIONS
The MASSACHUSETTS PORT AUTHORITY is soliciting Statements of Qualifications from
TRADE CONTRACTORS interested in performing work for MPA PROJECT NO. L1177-C2, CBIS
RECAPITALIZATION/OPTIMIZATION, LOGAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, EAST BOSTON, MA.
The Authority is seeking Qualification Statements from Trade Contractors who have a demonstrated
experience in the construction and implementation of similar work in terms of scale and complexity
as required for this project at Logan Airport in East Boston. In accordance with Massachusetts
construction manager at-risk requirements, MGL Chapter 149A, Section 44F, Qualification Statements
are being requested at this time from Roofing, Waterproofing, Miscellaneous Metals, Acoustical
Tile, Resilient Tile and Flooring, Ceramic Tile, Glass and Glazing, Painting, Plumbing, HVAC
and Masonry trade contractors.
In 2002, in-line Checked Baggage Inspection Systems (CBIS) were installed and commissioned at
various locations in Terminals B, C and E at Logan International Airport. Terminal A was subsequently
constructed with an entirely new baggage handling system that also included an in-line CBIS. While
these systems were state-of-the-art at the time, they were designed well before the adoption of the
Planning Guidelines and Design Standards (PGDS) by the Transportation Security Administration
(TSA) in 2009. Under the proposed project, the Authority is proposing to make improvements to the
CBISs at Logan International Airport.
The scope of work on the Project involves construction activities in all of the Terminals at Logan
International Airport. Extensive interaction and coordination with the TSA and the airlines will be
required. Construction of the Project will commence in the spring of 2012. The work will be completed
in a minimum of five phases. The work on the last of the phases will be completed on or before April
of 2014.
The proposed work includes all nature of general building construction in Airport buildings. The
estimated value of work to be performed by the trade contractors is listed below:

and experienced in the building construction. The Authority shall utilize a two-step process including
the prequalification of trade contractors based on an evaluation of the Statement of Qualifications
received in response to this solicitation, followed by an Invitation to Bidders that will only be issued
to the prequalified trade contractors. A Prequalification Committee consisting of four representatives,
one each from the Designer and the CM at Risk and two Massport staff. This Prequalification
Committee will be conducting a qualifications-based evaluation of submittals received from interested
trade contractors in order to identify prequalified trade contractors who will be invited to respond to a

Clemens Will Pitch for
The Sugar Land Skeeters
Roger Clemens apparently
doesn’t think he’s done yet
with baseball. The 50-yearold Clemens has just signed
with the Skeeters in the independent Atlantic League.
His first start was on Saturday, August 25 in Texas
against a Bridgeport, CT
team. His fastball is only
about 86 mph now, a long
way from his Rocket Man
days. Sugar Land is about 20
miles from Houston and
close to home for him. He
last played in 2007 for the NY
Yankees at 45. He went 6-6
with a 4.18 ERA. Clemens
has won 354 games in a 24year career and his 4,672
strikeouts are third best in
baseball history.
Melky Cabrera Gets
50-game Ban
It appears that Melky
Cabrera’s run for the MVP has
come to a crashing end. The
San Francisco Giants outfielder was suspended 50
games on August 15 following
a positive test for testosterone, which ends his remarkable season. Cabrera leads
the National League with 150
hits and is second in batting
average. Cabrera’s penalty
was the first high profile
player since last year’s NL
MVP Ryan Braun had his suspension overturned by an arbitrator last winter. Cabrera’s
production has increased the
past three seasons with three
different teams. In 2010 with
the Athletics, he hit .255,
with the Royals in 2011, he
hit .305 and this season with
the Giants he has been hitting .346.
Cabrera also has hit 11
homers this season to date

GETTING CLOSER — As the
Labor Day Weekend benchmark passes on the calendar,
the NHL comes closer to a
shutdown. If the two sides in
the labor negotiations don’t
come to an agreement by
September 15, a lockout will
be put in place, pre-season
games will be cancelled and
the mid-October start of the
regular season will be placed
in serious jeopardy.
Several people I have talked
to in the past few weeks feel
that there will be a lockout.
Some think things will be
settled in time for the Winter
Classic — the annual outdoor
game that this season is set
for New Year’s Day in Michigan. At least one feels that
the entire season will be lost,
much like 2004-2005 when
no NHL hockey was played.
That would really be a sorry
scenario. You would think
that both sides would have
learned a lot from the yearlong lockout situation of several years ago. If they haven’t,
get set for a long, hard, cold
winter around NHL arenas as
the months go by.
BURSTING AT THE SEAMS
— When Northeastern men’s
head hockey coach Jim Madigan greets his team early in
September he may well have
to bring a set of name cards
with him.
That’s because the Huskies
feature a roster of 30 players
who will take to the ice in preseason drills. The roster was
bolstered by an incoming
freshman class of 12 players,
the largest to arrive on the
Huntington Avenue campus
since the 2005-2006 season
when 13 came aboard.
Madigan is hoping that
they will more than fill the
void left by the loss of eight
players from last year’s roster. Two graduated, two turned
pro, one transferred and three
chose not to return to school.
“I’m really excited and
pleased with the class and
how they’re going to make an
impact on our program,” said
the second year coach. “As
is the case with most freshmen, there will be a period
of getting adjusted to college
hockey for most of them. I’m
very confident that in a short
period of time, they’ll be right
up to speed and will be able
to contribute to our success.”
This should be a program
where the freshmen will have
the opportunity to have their
share of ice time and show
what they can contribute. The
2011-2012 edition of the Huskies finished at 13-16-5 overall and were 9-14-4 in Hockey
East — a ninth place finish
in the 10-team conference.
There isn’t a goalie among
the newcomers so senior
Chris Rawlings will probably
get the bulk of the work in
net — as he did last year,
playing 31 games. He’ll be
backed up by junior Clay Witt
and senior Bryan Mountain.
NU will get to know where
it is as a program early in
the season since the Huskies
play host to defending national champion Boston
College on October 13 and
then meet BC again at The
Heights on October 20. They
will also host the Eagles on
January 19.
Northeastern’s only trip
away from New England
will come on Veteran’s Day
Weekend when the Huskies
play two games at AlabamaHuntsville (November 10-11).
They will play at Harvard on
December 29 and then face
Boston University four times
in the 2013 portion of the
schedule.
The first meeting will occur
at Agganis Arena on January 18 while the second will
take place in the opening
round of the Beanpot Tournament, set for February 4 at
the Garden. The teams will
close out the regular season
with a two-game series —
March 8 at Matthews Arena
and March 9 at Agganis
Arena.
SEVEN FOR THE CRIMSON
— Harvard men’s hockey
coach Ted Donato has announced that seven freshmen will be joining the team.
They will join a squad that
was rejuvenated last year as
it made its way to the ECAC
championship game.
The new group of players
includes five forwards, a defenseman and a goalie. North
Reading’s Jimmy Vesey, a
forward, is the only local
player in the group, having
played his school hockey at
Belmont Hill. Last year, while
playing for the South Shore
Kings in the Eastern Junior
Hockey League, he was
named the league’s MVP as
well as the Offensive Player
of the Year. His father Jim
played in the NHL for the
St. Louis Blues and the
Bruins.
Pete Traber of Birmingham, Michigan is the incoming goalie. He played four
years of high school hockey
before moving on to the North
American Hockey League.
Last season he had a 2.26
goals against average and a
.906 save percentage while
playing with the Topeka Roadrunners, a season that included three shutouts and a
218-minute scoreless streak.
Goalies Raphael Girard and
Steve Michalek both return
for the Crimson. Raphael had
an outstanding 2011-2012
season, being voted Harvard’s
Most Improved Player after
ranking fifth nationally in
save percentage (.933) and
12th in goals-against-average
(2.14). As a freshman last
season, Michalek was named
to the All-Ivy second team and
recorded a Beanpot win in the
consolation game against
Northeastern.
Harvard had a so-so record
last year (13-10-11 overall,
8-5-9 ECAC) but came on
strong in the playoffs. The
team set an NCAA record for
ties in a single season (11)
but those points enabled
Harvard to earn a third place
finish in the regular season.
After a first round bye, the
Crimson took out Yale in the
ECAC best-of-three quarterfinals and then beat Cornell
6-1 in the semifinals before
losing to Union 3-1 in the
championship game.
