LOUISIANA PUBLIC BROADCASTING ANNUAL REPORT 2013
LOUISIANA PUBLIC BROADCASTING A N N U A L R E P O RT 2 0 1 3 A MESSAGE FROM LPB PRESIDENT/CEO BETH COURTNEY A MESSAGE FROM FRIENDS BOARD CHAIRMAN PHILLIP JUBAN I am pleased to report that in spite of dramatic changes in our industry’s business model and a difficult financial climate, LPB has survived and thrived. We continue to produce “content of consequence,” and we are supported by an incredible number of individuals who contribute their time and talent. 2013 was another banner year for Friends of LPB. The year started and ended with special previews of one of the most popular PBS show in decades, Downton Abbey. Friends hosted a special celebration of Season 3 in January and a tea inspired by Downton Abbey on December 29 to preview Season 4. A partnership with the office of Lieutenant Governor Jay Dardenne resulted in one of our most ambitious productions Sunshine By The Stars: Celebrating Louisiana Music. Hosted by Harry Connick, Jr., it has aired both here in Louisiana and nationally on PBS stations around the country. It features the top musical talent from Louisiana singing our state song along with a history of the music of Louisiana. In 2013, we also premiered the first two episodes of our six-part series, Alive! In America’s Delta. This partnership with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries examines efforts to save the state’s endangered species and enforce the state’s wildlife, hunting, fishing and boating laws. On May 9, Friends held the annual Louisiana Legends Gala and Auction at the Old State Capitol. This year’s recipients included arts activist and philanthropist O. Delton Harrison, businessman and philanthropist C. Paul Hilliard, retired Louisiana Supreme Court Chief Judge Katherine “Kitty” Kimball, famed musician and educator Ellis Marsalis, and CenturyLink President and CEO Glen Post. Legends Committee Chair Rose Long did a great job bringing in sponsors to help make this one of the most profitable galas in Friends history. We continue a leadership position in the news media of Louisiana with Louisiana the State We’re In and Louisiana Public Square along with daily Capitol Beat reports from the State Capitol during the legislative session. LPB was selected as one of five locations in the country to pilot a new Ready To Learn grant project that worked with numerous early childhood centers in North Baton Rouge and included partnerships with the Rotary Club of Baton Rouge and ExxonMobil. We also held four of our popular and educational Super Summer Explorers Camps this year to help children gain the literacy and technology skills they need to succeed in school. LPB also helped 40,000 teachers around the state gain access to our on line resource material in their classrooms. One of the most popular virtual fieldtrips allowed 11,000 students to view the history of Louisiana’s Old State Capitol. The LPB Art and Travel Auction was the biggest ever as more than 280 pieces of art were generously donated by Louisiana artists. The auction kicked off with the Art Rocks! preview party in September and ended October 24 with the live on-air auction. I want to give special recognition to Auction co-chairs Lynne Pisto and Shannon Allen who traveled around the state to pick up the art that made this year’s auction so successful. I want to thank the Board and the Friends staff for all their hard work this year. You can see the results of those efforts on LPB every day as the money raised by Friends goes to help purchase and create the programs you enjoy so much on the state public television network. The awareness of public television soared in this past year with the amazing success of Downton Abbey, the highest rated series in PBS history. LPB special events such as Louisiana Young Heroes and the Louisiana Legends Gala also had record attendance. We are looking forward to another great year in 2014. 2 • LPB ANNUAL REPORT | 2013 A MESSAGE FROM CHRISTIAN GOUDEAU, CHAIRMAN, LOUISIANA EDUCATIONAL TELEVISION AUTHORITY BOARD 2013 will have to go down as one of the most exciting years in Louisiana Public Broadcasting’s 38-year history. The great success of Downton Abbey, the most popular show on PBS and LPB in history, got the year off to an excellent start and the momentum continued throughout the year as we honored eight students with Louisiana Young Heroes Awards and named five outstanding Louisianans as Louisiana Legends in the spring. The year kept getting better as almost 5,000 people attended Antique Roadshow’s July 27 visit to Baton Rouge. LPB produced a behind-the-scenes show that aired in December with the actual episodes premiering in February 2014. We’re proud to say that three of LPB’s program went national this year. The Great American Seafood Cookoff IV and Turning the Tide were distributed by American Public Television to nearly 100 stations around the country while Sunshine By the Stars: Celebrating Louisiana Music was distributed by PBS. Despite state and federal budget cuts, LPB has been able to maintain its efforts to tell Louisiana’s story and we are confident that 2014 will be another excellentyear. MESSAGE FROM FOUNDATION FOR EXCELLENCE IN LOUISIANA PUBLIC BROADCASTING CHAIRMAN JOE TRAIGLE The Foundation for Excellence in Louisiana Public Broadcasting continued its strong financial support for LPB in 2013. The Foundation provided funding for a wide-range of Louisiana projects including television programs, community outreach activities, classroom education and much more. We were also proud that the support of the Foundation helped offset some of the cuts made in LPB’s funding in 2013 and we stand ready to continue out longstanding commitment to Louisiana Public Broadcasting’s mission of providing excellent educational and entertaining programming and telling Louisiana’s story. Almost 5,000 people attended the Antique Roadshow’s first visit to Louisiana in 10 years at the Baton Rouge River Center on July 27. As part of the 18th season of the highest rated series on PBS and LPB, the three shows premiered on February 17 and 24, and March 24 at 7PM. One of the highlights during the Roadshow visit was the discovery of a copy of the book The History of Magic, with an inscription from his old college roommate…Jim Morrison of The Doors fame. The book appraised for $8,000 to $10,000. “Roadshow had high expectations for our first visit to Baton Rouge and it did not disappoint.” - Marsha Bemko, Antiques Roadshow’s Executive Producer. The Roadshow also visited Magnolia Mound Plantation in Baton Rouge for a discussion about Southern furniture with appraiser Leigh Keno, the Port Hudson National Cemetery where Chris Mitchell discussed Civil War grenades, and the LSU Museum of Art in Baton Rouge where Kathleen Hardwood discussed the work of artist Clementine Hunter. LPB premiered Antiques Roadshow Baton Rouge: Behind-the Scenes in December featuring interviews with host Mark L. Walberg, Bemko and some of the people who brought items in for appraisal. LPB ANNUAL REPORT | 2013 • 5 PRODUCTIONS 2013 saw the national premiere of two award-winning LPB productions and the start of an exciting new series. Sunshine by the Stars: Celebrating Louisiana Music was distributed by PBS to public television stations around the country in November. Harry Connick, Jr. hosted and performed in the program, and worked with the Lt. Governor’s Office and LPB on this project which featured an all-star lineup of Louisiana artists including Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Famers Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Guy and Allen Toussaint performing their own unique renditions of the Louisiana State Song “You Are My Sunshine.” Turning The Tide, an in-depth discussion of possible solutions to the state’s rapidly disappearing coastline and wetlands, also went national in November. Working with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, LPB began a six-part series called Alive! In America’s Delta in 2013 that looks at the efforts to save endangered species in our state. The first two episodes, The Whooping Crane’s Majestic Return premiered in August and Black Bear Comeback premiered in November with the rest scheduled for 2014. In 2013, the Louisiana Legends series featured interviews with retired Louisiana Supreme Court Justice Kitty Kimball; musician, educator and patriarch of the First Family of Jazz Ellis Marsalis; arts advocate and philanthropist Delton Harrison; Century Link President/CEO Glen Post; and philanthropist and art advocate Paul Hilliard. All five were honored at the Louisiana Legends Gala in May at the Old State Capitol. This year also marked the 10th year of LPB’s partnership with the McLeod Lecture Series at McNeese State University in Lake Charles. This year’s topic was Overcoming Gridlock In A Partisan Environment. Louisiana: The State We’re In celebrated its 37th year on the air in September. Charlie Whinham and Shauna Sanford (right) host Louisiana’s only statewide newsmagazine, providing the latest news from around the state and the State Capitol along with entertaining features and informative panel discussions. 6 • LPB ANNUAL REPORT | 2013 Now in its tenth season, Louisiana Public Square continued providing a forum for average citizens to express their opinions about the important issues facing the state and question experts on that month’s topics. Among the topics this year were gay rights, pot decriminalization, tax reform and what can be done to save the state’s coastline. Fifteen chefs from around the country competed in The Great American Seafood Cookoff 2013 in New Orleans in July. It was the fifth year that LPB has created a program featuring highlights from the competition. It will air on PBS stations around the country in 2014. LPB ANNUAL REPORT | 2013 • 7 JUST FOR KIDS LPB continued its outreach efforts around the state with a wide range of activities. LPB was one of only five public television entities to receive a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and PBS Kids to test the effectiveness of digital content developed through Ready To Learn to help children ages 2-8 in low income families develop early math and literacy skills. The grant targeted three Head Start Centers and three elementary schools in North Baton Rouge. In New Orleans, LPB and Entergy continued their literacy outreach efforts at 10 childcare centers and one elementary charter school by providing books, training teachers and helping coordinate other outreach activities to help these preschoolers gain the skills they need to learn how to read. One of the most successful and fun projects LPB that did in 2013 was the four summer technology camps held at LPB and the J.K. Haynes Charter School. The weeklong camps teach children how to use computers and enhance their literacy skills through a wide range of entertaining and educational activities. LPB brought every child’s favorite train to town in November. Almost 700 parents and children turned out to meet Thomas the Tank Engine and watch a preview of his new movie King of the Railway. The children had a great time meeting Thomas and LPB collected boxes of gloves and winter hats for the children in the Big Buddy program in Baton Rouge. 8 • LPB ANNUAL REPORT | 2013 AWARDS Sunshine By the Stars: Celebrating Louisiana Music 2013 NETA Award for Best Production of a Performance Bronze Telly Award Sunshine by the Stars producers Christina Melton and Donald “D Ray!” Washington received the NETA Award for Best Production of a Performance in October from NETA Executive Director Skip Hinton Louisiana: 200 Years of Statehood Bronze Telly Award LPB ANNUAL REPORT | 2013 • 9 2013 UNDERWRITERS Acadian Companies Adams and Reese, LLC AllBrands.com Bernard F.
