Downsview Aerospace Hub Map DOWNSVIEW PARK UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO INSTITUTE FOR AEROSPACE STUDIES (UTIAS) INNOVATION CENTRE CENTENNIAL COLLEGE BOMBARDIER TTC STATION DEFENCE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CANADA (DRDC) FLIGHTSAFETY INTERNATIONAL Downsview Aerospace Hub Map The Downsview Aerospace Innovation and Research (DAIR) Consortium, an association of all of the large aerospace companies and leading postsecondary education institutions from the GTA, have come together with the joint mandate of developing an Aerospace Hub at Downsview Park in Toronto, Ontario. At the heart of the Hub, an Aerospace Research and Innovation Centre will bridge industry, academia, and government partnerships. It will catalyze new various industry, academic, and government organizations, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), experimental and test facilities, and space for technology. DOWNSVIEW PARK Downsview Park is a dynamic urban park that has a rich history rooted in Canada’s aviation and aerospace industry. The Downsview site was developed in 1939 as an airfield next to an aircraft manufacturing plant owned and operated by de Havilland Canada. It has had a very rich history, including being home to the Royal Canadian Air Force, who, in 1947, set up an air base there and expanded the property. Downsview Park is located in the heart of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) anchored by Sheppard Avenue, Keele Street, the new Spadina Subway extension and GO train commuter line. UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO INSTITUTE FOR AEROSPACE STUDIES (UTIAS) UTIAS is a graduate studies and research institute, forming part of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto. It is widely recognized as a unique national centre of academic excellence in aerospace science and engineering with a long history of significant contributions to undergraduate and graduate education, basic research, and aerospace technology. UTIAS engages in cutting edge research in a wide range of areas, from aerodynamics to microsatellite systems. Particular emphasis is placed on technologies toward reducing the impact of aviation on the environment and autonomous and nearautonomous operation of mobile robots, such as unmanned aerial vehicles, space rovers, and self-driving cars. Graduates of UTIAS can be found in senior positions throughout the Canadian aerospace sector. By locating within the Aerospace Hub at Downsview Park, UTIAS can become much more accessible to other stakeholders in the Canadian aerospace sector and can play a key role in activities at the Innovation Centre. Downsview Aerospace Hub Map INNOVATION CENTRE The DAIR Innovation Centre is a facility that will provide space and services for industry and academia to come together and will enable and encourage aerospace sector collaboration. Its role is a physical and organizational catalyst to collaboration. The Innovation Centre will include facilities for a wide range of events, such as short courses, workshops, meetings, and conferences that will enable close interaction between all stakeholders. It will also house shared research facilities that can be of value to multiple partners but would otherwise be impractical for a single organization to acquire, maintain, and operate. CENTENNIAL COLLEGE Centennial College is Ontario's first community college. It was established in 1966 and is best known for its record of exemplary teaching, innovative programming and extensive partnership building. Centennial is recognized as one of the most culturally diverse postsecondary institutions in Canada. Almost 100 ethno-cultural groups are represented and 80 languages are spoken on campus. Centennial is preparing to relocate its aviation programs from the hangars at the Ashtonbee campus to the former de Havilland aircraft manufacturing centre at Downsview Park. The new site will increase Centennial’s capacity to prepare students for employment in an industry where demand is increasing and high value jobs await. The vision for the Downsview Park Aerospace Campus is to be a comprehensive educational and research facility. This new development represents a major turning point for Centennial College, furthering the College’s position as a leader in avionics, aircraft maintenance and manufacturing education. Centennial’s Aerospace Campus at Downsview Park is the first phase in the development of the Downsview Aerospace Hub.
