A is for animal
l a m i n a r o f A is Design by: Bethany Fields ©2007 Craft TV Weekly, Inc. A is for Animal 1 It’s a zoo! Bethany’s boys want a zoo full of animals in their backyard. To keep them happy without all the work of caring for a zoo, Bethany decided to create an interactive board book about animals. The pages are sealed so they’ll last for years. Clues can be read, flaps can be lifted, and pictures can be moved over and over again. Clean-up is easy, file the animal photos on the front page and you’re done! No scoopers needed! supplies • 8" 8" Blank Board book • Five 6 1/2" 7" Fabric Squares, Assorted colors and patterns FEATURED PRODUCTS Marvy/Uchida • Puffy Velvet Fabric Markers • Embossing Heat Tool • Decorative Buttons, 5 pairs • 1/8" Satin Ribbon, Colors to match fabrics • Acrylic Paint, 8 coordinating colors • 1/2" Ribbon, 8" length, 2 pieces • 8 1/2" 11" Plain Paper, 8 sheets • 8 1/2" 11" Patterned Paper, 8 sheets of coordinating colors • Workable Fixative • Hook and Loop Tape • Self-Adhesive Laminate, Sheets or on a roll • Gel or Decoupage Medium tools • Pinking Shears • Scissors Start ing your Page The pages of this book consist of a clue page and a facing page with a fabric flap that reveals the answer for the clues when the flap is lifted. Each clue page and each answer page are assembled in basically the same fashion. These directions will focus on the last page, the blue dog page and on the proceeding page, the pink cat page. ©2007 Craft TV Weekly, Inc. • Paintbrush • Screw Punch or Awl • Cutting Mat • Foam Brush Photos • 5 Animal Photos, printed in two sizes: 5" 3" 3 1/2" 2 1/2" A is for Animal 1 2 Print out two sets of photos of 5 different animals on glossy paper on a color printer. One set of photos should measure 3" 5". These are the “answer” photos and will be placed on the right-hand pages. The other set should measure about 3 1/2" 2 1/2", roughly wallet size. These are the “guessing” photos. Use a self-adhesive laminate and laminate each of the smaller “guessing” photos following the manufacturers directions. Leave a 1/8" border of laminate around each of the photos to ensure a good seal. Apply a 1/2" piece of self-adhesive hook and loop tape to each small “guessing” photo. Do this by peeling off the backing on the “hook” piece of the tape (the scratchy piece) and adhering it to the center of the back side of the photo. Repeat for each “guessing” photo and set them aside. Leave the “loop” piece adhered to the “hook” piece for accurate placement later on. On a color printer, print out a clue sheet for an animal. Bethany printed out the clues, “I say meow. I am soft. I have whiskers.” with blue letters on a pink background. These clues are for her pink cat page. Spray the paper with workable fixative to prevent the ink from running. Let dry. 2 Use a foam brush to apply decoupage medium or gel medium to seal the paper. In order to prevent warping, apply the medium to both the front and back of the paper. Set the clues page aside to dry. Trim the clues page to measure 7 3/4" 7 3/4". Repeat this process to create four more clues pages and an introduction page for the inside cover of the book. Bethany’s introduction page reads, “What kind of pet for our family?” 3 Make the fabric flap. Cut a 6 1/2" 7" piece out of coordinating fabric using pinking shears. Use Puffy Velvet Fabric Markers from Marvy/Uchida and paint on selected areas of the fabric. Bethany painted over the blue flowers on her cat fabric and created orange stars on her blue dog fabric. Use the Embossing Heat Tool from Marvy/Uchida to puff the painted areas on the fabric. Repeat this step to create 4 more fabric flaps. The puffed, painted areas add texture so even the smallest hands can enjoy playing with the book. ©2007 Craft TV Weekly, Inc. A is for Animal Paint around the edges of each page of the board book, about 2" in toward the center, with acrylic paints which coordinate with the fabrics. Bethany painted the edges of the dog pages blue and the cat pages pink. Let dry. 3 4 Open the board book to the pink cat pages. Use a paintbrush and apply decoupage medium or gel medium to the entire surface of the left-hand page of the board book. While it is still wet, center the cat clues page from Step 2 on the page. Run a brayer over the clues page to smooth it onto the board book and work out any air bubbles. 5 Cut a 7 3/4" square from a piece of coordinating patterned paper. Seal the paper with decoupage or gel medium. When dry apply it to the board book page opposite the clues page in the same manner the clues page was attached in Step 4. Adhere clues pages and coordinating patterned papers to all the other pages of the book. The inside front cover and the facing page are special pages. The inside cover is where you will put the title or introduction to your book. Bethany’s inside front cover reads, “What kind of pet for our family?”. The facing page is where the “guessing” pieces will be stored. Apply coordinating patterned paper to that page, sealing it like the other pages. ©2007 Craft TV Weekly, Inc. A is for Animal Prepare the book for attaching the fabric flaps which will hide the answers. Place the book on a cutting mat, opened to the last page, the blue dog page. Lay the fabric flap for that page centered on the page. 4 6 Use a screw punch or an awl and punch a hole through the fabric and the back cover of the board book in the upper left corner, 1 3/4" from the top edge of the book and 1 3/4” in from the spine. Hold the remaining pages of the book up if necessary to stabilize the back cover. Punch another hole 1/4" to the left of the first hole. Next, punch a third hole in the upper right corner of the cover 1 3/4” from the top edge and 1 3/4" in from the right edge. Punch another hole 1/4" to the right of the third hole. Set aside the fabric. Add the fabric so that the holes are aligned in the book pages with the fabric. Once the holes are punched set aside the fabric flap. Use the screw punch or awl to re-punch the four holes in the page to make sure the openings are clear all the way through. 7 Now, make holes on the other pages. Close the book and place it on the work surface with the back of the book facing up. Punch through the existing holes again to make marks on the page underneath. Open the book to the last page. The left hand side of the page (clues page) should now have marks at the top lining up exactly with the holes punched through the back cover. Use the screw punch to punch through each of the four marks. Make sure to punch hard enough so the page underneath is marked. Continue punching through the pages, until you reach the first page. Place a cutting mat between the front page and the front cover to prevent punching holes in the front cover as you punch Punch holes in the remaining fabric flaps. Lay one of the remaining fabric flaps on a cutting mat. Use the screw punch and punch a hole 5/8" from the right edge and 1/2" from the top edge. Punch a second hole 1/4" to the left of the first hole. Punch a third hole 5/8" from the left edge and 1/2" from the top edge. Punch a fourth hole 1/4" to the right of the third hole. ©2007 Craft TV Weekly, Inc. 8 A is for Animal 9 5 Attach the fabric flaps to the answer pages. Thread a 5" length of 1/8" wide satin ribbon through a coordinating button, from the front of the button to the back. Thread the ends of the ribbon through one set of holes on the blue dog clues page, so the button is on the dog page and the ends of the ribbon are now on the pink cat answers page. Thread the ribbon through the holes in the fabric flap for the cat page and tie in a double knot. Add a dot of glue that dries clear for added security. Repeat this process to attach the other corner of the fabric flap to the cat page. Attach all the fabric flaps in the same way. Safety Tip It is important to use items in this interactive book that are ageappropriate for the children that will be using it. Make sure buttons are big and ribbon ends are glued so they don’t come apart. For extra security, stitch the hook and loop tape to the fabric flaps. Attach the answers. Lift up the fabric flap for the cat page. Use tab adhesive to attach the larger “answer” cat photo to the area of the page which gets covered by the flap. Lower the flap. Peel the backing off the hook and loop tape on the back of the small “guessing” cat photo prepared in Step 1. Press the photo down onto the center of the fabric flap to attach it to the flap. Attach all of the “answer” and “guessing” photos in the same manner. ©2007 Craft TV Weekly, Inc. 10 A is for Animal 11 6 Create a storage space for the “guessing” photo pieces. Open the book to the first page. On the right-hand page, adhere five 1/2" pieces of loop tape (the fuzzy side). Peel the “guessing” photos off of the fabric flaps and stick them to the loop tape for storage. Decorate the cover of the book. Bethany adhered patterned paper to both the front and back covers using decoupage medium just as she did for the inside pages. She painted a wooden “A” with red acrylic paint and tied on some fabric scraps leftover from the fabric flaps. To keep the book closed, use a screw punch and punch a hole in the front and back covers, 4" from the top edge and 1/4" from the outside edge. Knot the end of a 1/2" wide piece of ribbon. Thread the ribbon through the hole in the front cover, pulling the knot snug against the inside of the cover. Attach a ribbon to the back cover in the same way. Tie the two ribbons together to hold the book closed. ©2007 Craft TV Weekly, Inc. 12 A is for Animal A TINY ZOO! There are five clue/answer/animal pages in this book. Bethany created the pink cat page and portions of the blue dog page in the Webisode. Here are the other pages created similarly, using acrylic paint on the pages with coordinating fabric, buttons, and ribbon. Add texture to each of the fabric flaps with the Puffy Velvet Fabric Markers. Don’t forget to “puff” them with the Embossing Heat Tool.
