Chairperson and Executive Director Message
June 2016
Dear Friends:
As the summer season is upon us in this our 22nd year, we hope this report finds you and yours well. On behalf
of the Board of Trustees and the Mackinac Island community, we thank you for your continued support and
belief in your Community Foundation’s mission.
Your generosity, commitment and love of the Island has made it possible to grant over $2.3 million to many
special projects and programs over the years. From scholarships, conservation and preservation projects, environmental issues, to the health and wellbeing of our residents and workers and the arts, you are truly “Making
a Difference”. With prudent investment strategies, collaboration with all of the Island’s non-profits, school,
Medical Center and the City, we look forward to growing the impact of your philanthropy.
Our door is always open. We welcome your suggestions and thoughts regarding how the Foundation can make
a difference on the Island. Please enjoy this report and share your passion for the Island with others. We wish
you good health and a wonderful year.
Sincerely,

Mackinac College Legacy Fund
2016 is the 50th Anniversary of Mackinac College Inaugural which serves as a reminder
of the dedication to the
expanded College motto :
To Learn. To Live. To Lead.
A Time. A Place. A Legacy.
The Mackinac College (1966-1970) Legacy Fund was created as a glowing tribute to a
unique and exemplary educational experience enhanced by its Island setting. The short
history failed to diminish the long-term blessings bestowed thanks in great part to dedicated administrators and amazing professors. In the time since one professor called Mackinac College “…the best of the best, however brief”. Another international professor
talked of Mackinac College as her ”…most memorable teaching position.”

Allocations from the Mackinac College Legacy Fund, in the form of

the Island. Allowances are made for thinking outside the box in terms
of experimental ideas especially student-directed suggestions. Education grants focus on programs, including the arts, which prepare Island
students to purposefully function in a global and
diverse workplace. Education grants may also
supplement assistance for programs at risk due
to reduced funding. Environmental grants focus MHA 4-H Trailblazer - Summer

Scholarship Highlights
New Funds
The scholarships I received from the community foundation have incredibly benefited my education and my future in general. The extra support allowed me to focus my attention more on my education and goals rather than on financial issues. It
also gave me the opportunity to expand my knowledge in new places, such as Big
Sky, MT where I completed my mandatory 30 week internship for my degree. With
this being said, I would like to take this chance to thank the community for the support! Mackinac Island is a special place and I'm so proud to call it home.
Marie Elizabeth Bunker |Class of 2011
I am unimaginably grateful for what the scholarships from Mackinac Island have
aided me in pursuing. My career goals have been made more accessible not only
financially but also through the knowledge that the community I love and am so
grateful to have been apart of still supports me in my endeavors. This scholarship
is incredibly generous and I only hope that future Mackinac Island students see it
as a gift to not only be apart of this wonderful community but as a stepping stone
that helps them pursue their dreams.
Collin Armstrong | Class of 2013
Youth Advisory Council
2015 was a productive year for the
Youth Advisory Council (YAC). YAC is
open to 7-12 grade students from Mackinac Island. They grant youth oriented
requests twice a year, volunteer at
Meals on Snowmobiles, AllScholarships Dinner, North Chicago
Soup Kitchen and gift giving to our more experienced residents around Christmas time. The activities are guided
by Lynda Hepker and Chelsea Berkshire. They are assisted by Alison Sehoyan and Lisa Dziobak.
Grants for 2015 included programing for the Mackinac Island Public School, City of Mackinac Island Recreation Department and YAC. Total Grants were $10,263. The youth work
hard at ensuring that every age group has at least one program or activity that is funded.
We hope that what they learn about philanthropy and volunteerism will play a role
throughout their lives.

Jeannette Doud Fund
The Jeannette Doud Fund was created by friends
and family to honor the life of this amazing woman.
Earnings from this fund will go to projects that will
enhance the quality of life, provide educational programming and other areas that are needed on
Mackinac Island.
Mackinac Island Yacht Club
Scholarship Fund
The MIYC Scholarship Fund was created to
enhance the ability of our Island graduates
to pursue post-secondary educational opportunities. The MIYC board and members
were looking for a way to give back to the
community that provides the membership
with such a beautiful home for their Club.

Mission Statement
Recognizing the dignity and beauty of Mackinac Island, the Mackinac Island Community Foundation serves
the general well-being of Island residents and visitors. Our purpose is to raise permanent endowment and
special purpose funds, manage them and distribute the earnings for charitable purposes. We are a vehicle to
hold private resources for the Island’s common good. We operate under the simple concept that charitable
money will grow over time when wisely invested and so will continue to have an impact long after the original gift is made.
