Dear Nail Stylist,
Gabrielle Allaire-Minari, Michela Marafon
A magical wind blows through new cosmetics. Whether it’s about make-up, or a
hand, nail or foot care product, the magic is present! Inspired by, and synchronised with fashion, we love kaleidoscopic deep warm tones.
Photography:
Margaux Grossen
Photography Assistant:
Colours like deep red, warm brown, from camel to gold, green in all its variations,
unknown blues and new orange tending towards salmon, associated with happiness and worn with passion. Fascinating and captivating they influence our daily
dress codes. Naturally, these tones are available in our nail polishes, UV gels as
well as our truly successful Gellak.
Kathelijne Seeldraeyers
Pictures fashion:
Etienne Tordoir
Make-up:
Also, matte rules over shine and is worn with glamour on nails of all shapes, and
shorter nails tend to be considered just as stylish.
Inge De Vos
Stylisten:
Art by women, such as Frida Kahlo, one of the world’s first feminist artists from
the beginning of the 20th century, became the inspiration for our winter collection 2011 and this magazine. Art towns such as Berlin are no longer embarrassed
by their past. The stars of fashion got their inspiration from the past of this town
with strong and straight proportional designs. While the New Renaissance tendency from East London created by Vivienne Westwood totally breaks with that,
being very feminine and provocative.

Frida
Kahlo
(Coyoacán, July 6, 1907 – July 13, 1954) was a
Mexican surrealist painter. She was born as the
daughter of a photographer in Coyoacán, a suburb of Mexico City.
Hommage to
Around the age of 6, she contracted polio. In 1925 she was
severely injured in a bus accident which caused her to be
bedridden for many months, battling against pain. She began painting during her recovery and, as her mother hung
mirrors around her bed, she finished her first self-portrait.
Although she was wearing corsets and walking with crutches she liked to visit friends. She started to hang out with a
group of politically and intellectually like-minded students.
On August 21, 1929 she married the very well-known painter
Diego Rivera. Due to the accident that broke her pelvis she
could not have children. A pregnancy ended in a painful miscarriage. The couple lived in Mexico, but they also showed
their work in San Francisco, New York and Detroit under
the name “Frida and Diego Rivera” Not in a traditional union, Kahlo and more often Rivera played with infidelities.
Kahlo with men as well as women. One of her lovers was
the Russian revolutionary Leon Trotski, who was expatriated to Mexico. Kahlo’s sister admitted during the summer
of 1934 that she had had an affair with Diego Rivera. Kahlo
left Diego, but after several fierce fights they re-married on
December 8, 1940. The strange agreement stipulated that
Kahlo no longer had to accept any sexual relations with her
husband. Later she would talk about “the two accidents of
my life (...) one was the bus which hit me; the other was my
husband”.
The work of Kahlo can be
characterized through its
bright colours, which are
in contrast with strange
atmospheres.
She had no fear for controversy; in the painting that was
a tribute to the actress Dorothy Hale she represented her
suicide very graphically. In her many self-portraits her full
eyebrows, which was how she wore them, are truly eyecatching. She painted from her fear and loneliness, as well
as to master her pain. Kahlo left 143 works, out of which
55 are self-portraits. It was only in 1953 that she had her
first solo exposition in Mexico. To everyone’s surprise she
showed up in her baldachin bed. This expo was organised
after lengthy insistence from her husband and friends. She
died one year later leaving a letter with following words: “I
hope the end will be happy and hope never to come back”.
There have been stories about a possible suicide.
A movie about Frida Kahlo’s life was made in 2002 with Salma Hayek in the lead role. Since her death, Kahlo’s fame
as an artist has only grown. She is considered as a symbol
for the feminist movement of the 1970s. Her free spirit has
been an example for many women all over the world. She
refused to shave her body and facial hair. In Mexico, Frida
is a Legend, especially for the women’s socialist and communist movements.

TREND 3
Bourgeois Nomads
Modern Native American Girls re-invent a style handed down by their ancestors who travelled through
the North and South American peninsula. The mood of this winter collection was inspired by nature
worship, craft, earth consciousness, eclecticism, indigenous tradition, juxtapositions and contrasts.
What we wear: Navajo fringed biker pants, fringed leather jackets, blanket wraps & coats, floor length
maxi skirts, light weight parkas, maxi volume parkas, belted men’s pants, denim dungarees, leather
pants, etc.
TREND 1
Pictures fashion: Etienne Tordoir
Berlin Bloc Boomers
The 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall showed the world how this town
in a short time became a Mecca for artistic diversity, architectural modernism and
extrovert fashion. Almost all fashion designers were inspired by the masculine severity of the uniform
flannels in black on black textures. Floor length overcoats coupled with paratrooper boots, officers’
jackets with padded shoulders and briefcase handbags. Zippered stiletto ankle boots and fingerless
gloves.
All these in the colours : Charcoal Grey – Bitter Chocolate – Midnight Navy – Heavy Green – Uniform Blue – Severe Brown – Golden Brown
The Bourgeois Nomad look uses earthy colours, contemporary minimal silhouettes and luxury tactile
materials to create an expensive version of the nomadic look.
For example, the tunic is reinterpreted into a luxury garment. More fitted than a basic tunic, the silhouette incorporates simple draping and gathered details and is fitted at the waist.
The garment is constructed from washed and brushed satins in muted khaki tones. Contemporary
effects are added with reptile-like texture and knitted or woven snoods. Skinny satin pants or satin
joggers with Buffalo Trail boots or heels complete the look.
The floor length circle skirt fuses nomadic tribal tradition with a voluminous contemporary silhouette.
The skirt is constructed from wool gabardine or cashmere and is embellished with primitive symbols
or digital tribal prints.
TREND 2
Individualistic Queen
Colour Moods : Dirty Pinks and Peach – Citroen – Yellow Ochre – Dessert Sand – Khaki – Orange –
Earth Amber – Terracotta – Copper – Turquoise – Diamond Blue – Cornflower – Beetroot – Lagoon
Blue – Poppy Blue – Magenta – Jade – Rust – Deer – Ash – Opal – Mud – Clay – Jet
A trend started in the streets of East London in 2008 and was taken over by couturiers
like Vivienne Westwood, followed by Christian Lacroix, D&G , Louis Vuitton, Bernard Wilhem, Angelo Marani and others, and this season it is called NEW RENAISSANCE. Swathe
yourself in ornate tapestries straight from the palace walls! As a courtesan of your man,
know exactly how to get attention with exaggerating silhouettes and body expression at
its best.
Velvet is an easy way to incorporate sumptuous, historical texture into easy to wear
shapes. It is subtle yet tactile and immediately evokes costume-period dressing. Add
corset lace detailing and tonal satin edge bindings to compliment the velvet and add
surface texture to the fabric.
The colour tones of the Individualistic Queen are : Ermine White – Parchment –
Vanilla Vellum – Rich Jewel Shades – Cardinal Red – Mossy Green – Aged Leather Browns – Royal Purple – Dark Inky Blues – Royal Velvet Black

Filing a Natural Nail
Tips for filing natural or artificial nails
2
45°
Nails should always be clean and free of polish before you begin filing. In addition, nails should always be very dry while filing as wet nails tend to split more easily.
Using the proper filing technique will result in stronger healthier nails and
less damage such as splitting and/or breaks of both natural nails and nail
enhancements.
The ideal length
Appropriate nail length is key to maintaining a healthy nail. The ideal length for filing is when the
free edge of the nail has grown one third of the total length of the nail bed (the pink part of the nail)
(1). The joining point between the white tip (free edge) and the nail bed is called the “stress point.”
Trying to maintain longer than advised nails can and often leads to breaks. This is why many experts
recommend a shorter nail length.
To determine the shape of the nails, most technicians will recommend a squoval or square shape,
as these shapes are less likely to lead to breakage. Filing down the nail to a more pointed shape can
dramatically weaken the nail and leave it exposed to breakage. (2)
An important element of a good nail filing technique begins with selecting the right tools. Stores
offer a huge array of nail files and accessories. Its not surprising that technicians often make an
incorrect choice of which file to use.
For simple natural nail filing you’ll need a soft pliable file, preferably a wooden file. Professionails
Black Board Wood or Professionails Clinifile Orange make the perfect choice.
Filing a Natural Nail
Using the selected file, take a few gentle strokes from the corner to the centre in the same direction.
(3) Don’t file natural nails all the way across or from side to side. A few strokes should be all that
is needed to get the ideal shape. Take care not to file down the sides of the nail aggressively – this
“stress” area is essential to nail strength and should be left alone as much as possible.
For nail enhancements, use a sanitisable file like the Professionails Clinifile Green, Pink or White
(for the heavier work). Never choose a metal file; the surface of these files are more coarsely grained
and too harsh on nails. Never use a very rough grain file in the hope of speeding up the job. These
files are only meant for nail enhancements and can tear into natural nails.
Correct Angle of the File
The file should be held at a 45 degree angle to the bottom side of the nail tip, almost against your
fingertip. (3) Contrary to popular technique, don’t hold the file perpendicular to the nail tip or, even
worse, angled over the top of the nail, as this can wear down the nail’s hard protective surface. The
top portion of your nail is the toughest and will help protect against peeling of the weaker layers
underneath.
Whichever file you choose, make sure to replace it often. We advise keeping each clients file in a
Professionails Personal Care Box.

Filing Nail Enhancements
The Square Nail Shape
A square nail is a nail with straight side walls, two sharp points on both side of the tips, and a balanced C-curve.(4) It is the traditional shape for a French manicure and is used most often for nail
art designs. The square nail is the most common shape for most nail beds.

How to File s Square Nail
Shape the free edge and side walls first. File the side wall holding the file straight up. Then turn the
client’s hand towards you, to straighten the free edge. Your file should be perpendicular to the nail
to achieve the hard square.(5) File the side wall straight up and then change the angle to blend the
free edge. Repeat this on the other side. Once both sides are finished, use angles to lightly feather
and bevel the nail and to sharpen the corners. To check if the length of each nail is equal, turn the
client’s hand back towards you and correct any differences in length.
How to File the Pointed/Stiletto Shape
The “I” technique is a very common technique to file this nail. The technique is based on the letter “I” where the centre of the “I” shape is the
upper arch that forms a line running down the nail bed. The top and base of
the “I” starts at the cuticle flush with the natural nail and the tip of the “I”
ends down the barrel of the nail to make sure the C-curve is perfect. To finish the nail the tip of the “I” must be removed and filed to a point and meet
at the centre of the apex. Once the “I” is made, the nail shape is crafted to
blend it into perfect harmony.(11)
The Squoval Shape
The squoval is the most common, strong and popular shape. The squoval nail is a square nail but
with the softer edges of an oval. On wide nail beds and
large hands, the squoval shape can make the hands look a bit thinner.
11
How to File the Squoval Shape
First begin with the square shape. First build the square so to make sure that the side walls are
straight. Once the side walls are straight, with the file underneath the corners and filing back and
forth from the underneath up gradually take the corners off. Keep in mind that you only want to
round the part of the tip that is past the free edge; this way you do not take anything away from the
side walls at the stress area.(6) Your squoval may have different shapes as shown in designs (6) and
(7).
The Oval/Round Shape
The oval/round shape is the most conservative shape. Here the nail bed can play a big factor for the
oval/round shape. If a client has a round cuticle area an oval shape will look great. (8)
How to File the Oval/Round Shape
Always file the side walls straight out, and then round out the edges into a nice curved shape. Be
careful on both sides of the nails not to take too much off on each side of the nail. Visualize making
a square, filing the side walls straight out, then simply round the corners with moderate angles to
complete the shape. (9)
The Pointed or Stiletto Shape
The pointed nail or “stiletto” nail is very common in Eastern Europe and Russia. A pointed shape is
the most adventurous shape of all shapes. With correct shaping it can make hands look more elegant. Smaller hands with smaller nail beds can use a pointed nail shape to create a subtle appearance of length, while long, slender nail beds take pointed nails to a more noticeable and extreme
level. (10)

Artificial nails ruin natural
nails
Modern nail products are of such good quality that nail technicians no longer
have to heavily buff natural nails to make sure that nail products stick to the nail.
Removal of artificial nails should not be a painful experience as gentle soakingoff products are commonly available. If nails are damaged it is most likely due to
a nail technician’s lack of knowledge and experience.
Natural nails should not be thinner after removal of artificial nails. Clients
should never attempt to remove nails enhancements themselves, as this could
lead to serious damage.
Nails breathe
Nails do not breathe at all, but receive oxygen via the blood vessels in the nail
bed. The nails are made of dead protein cells and hard keratin. The nails find
their origin in the matrix. The matrix builds cells called keratohyalin, which are
responsible for the hardening of the nails as soon as they appear from the cuticle area.

Professionails help to dispel the myths
Drinking a lot of

Drinking large amounts of milk
or eating other calcium-rich

Cutting cuticles is good.
The cuticle is the “eponychium”, which means the natural protection of your nail
matrix, and it is living skin. Cutting the cuticle is asking for infections, sometimes severe ones. Some people cut cuticles so badly that thick callused skin
appears. Always soak skin with a special cuticle remover and push back the
cuticles. Only the dead skin parts on top of the nail may be gently removed.
Plunge freshly polished nails into ice water to make them dry faster.
Cold water will not help your polish dry faster. Polish needs time to dry by the evaporation of the solvents within. This
is why a warm fan is commonly used by manicurists.
46 | winter 2011
Nail polish kept
in the fridge lasts
longer
Regular use of nail polish and
keeping it in the fridge does
not make a difference to its
shelf time. But if you do not
use it on a regular base it
will certainly slow down the
thickening process. The way
polish bottles are closed and
used can improve the shelf
life of the polish. A technician
should avoid placing the
open bottle “on the table”
but should instead place the
bottle in her palm; this way the
bottle is closer to the nail and
the application is faster. This
minimises the time that the
bottle is left open and therefore
prevents the evaporation of the
solvents within the polish.
PROFESSIONAILS NAILY NEWS
Artificial nails should be soaked
off or removed often to “give
nails a break”.
As long as you are happy with the quality of your nails and provided that the
quality of products used is of a high standard there’s no reason to remove your
nail extensions. In fact, this should be avoided, as removing artificial nails can
seriously damage your nails. All technicians should inform their clients on how
to properly maintain their nails between visits, and ways to avoid breakages
and other damage between visits. If nails are removed within one month clients
should be coming for regular manicures (once a week) for nail buffing, cuticle
care and polishing maintenance.

Winter pedicures
Pedicure is not only a summer service. Take your clients’ feet out of hibernation
and offer them a warm winter treat!
Natural Walk Out
Polishing toe nails means big trouble when your client walks out with socks and boots. After a good
massage of the legs and feet, buff the toe nails to make them shine and add plenty of cuticle oil to
nourish the dry skin; polish is not a good option in the winter as clients will want to put on shoes. A
good alternative to polish is Colour Gel. If opting for Colour Gel offer a massage and cuticle treatment
after the application of the gel.
Service with a Scent
Turn your salon into a warm comfortable place full of winter scents and give your client a unique
atmosphere. Just by adding candles with season-specific scents of cinnamon, burned wood, amber,
cedar wood, patchouli, coffee, or coconut.
Comfortable Zone
Make your salon a cosy wintertime getaway. Wrap your client in a warm winter blanket. Smooth jazz
music will help to set the mood.
Turn up the Heat
Attracting clients for winter pedicures can be as simple as warming the various products used in the
service. Warm up scrubs and massage lotions, and heat towels used in the pedicures. Use hot stones
during your foot and leg massages, as great add-ons to winter pedicures.
Party Season
Most of your clients have parties booked and want to show off their pedicured toes with their sexy
dresses. Ask them to pre book your services, especially if they want to have some special nail art on
their toes.
Pamper your Staff
The best way to sell pedicure treats is to offer your staff a treat. After they have experienced your
winter treats they will be your best advertisers and they will sell the treatments effortlessly. A regular
pedicure booking easily becomes upgraded to a Winter Special treatment.
The Power of Passports
Create a Winter Pedicure Passport. Reward each client with a specific treatment or a value check
when they book a series of treatments in advance.
Revolving Retail
When decorating your salon for the festive winter makeover, don’t forget to include retail changes as
well. Stock up on cuticle oil, pedicure socks, and hand and foot treatments with gloves and socks for
home care. By making your salon the go-to place for winter homecare items, you’ll be encouraging
clients to book services with you as well.

How the make sure 3D gel remains on all gel applications
If you want to apply 3D Gel on top of a shiny nail, finished with a gloss or just on top of
Colour gel or Gellak, the 3D Gel may peel off easily.
When you first apply the Professionails Ever Gloss Adhesive Promoter on top of the
shiny top gel the 3D Gel will remain permanently. Clean the sticky layer of the 3D Gel
after curing.
How to make sure your Propaint designs remains on UV gel
applications
We know it is hard to cover a design made with Propaint or striping colours with a gloss
without spoiling the design. After some time the gloss tends to peel off. The solution
is: Make sure your design is totally dry. Use a Graffiti brush and with gentle strokes
apply Ever Gloss Adhesive Promoter on top of your design followed by your preferred
gloss gel.

June 2009 Catherine Claus goes to the first fashion meeting with an international fashion designer to
discover the moods, colour pallets and trends for winter 2011.
October 2009 We had our first internal brainstorm regarding new colour launches, after which dates
for model shooting were fixed.
December 2009 The colour palettes are defined. The theme of the collection is definitive. It will be the
controversial artist Frida Kahlo!
Casting of the models starts. The model for the image of Frida Kahlo must have the real Frida Kahlo
look. Tough job! We finally find Pauline Van der Cruysse at Dominique Models.
Catherine starts to design the new Nailart designs, inspired by the trend of woollen boots by Chanel.
Product developer Leen searches for accessories such as nail studs, etc.
Catherine starts to write the features that we now offer you in our Naily News.
January 2010 Pigments are delivered and colours are assembled and tested.
We determinate the colours according to the product line.
Fashion images of Fashion Designers are chosen for the Step by Steps and discussed with the nail
stylists.
The layout of the magazine is now determined.
The making of
Naily News winter 2011
February 2010 All new materials and the scenario of the photo shoot are sent to the nail stylists.
They start their preoperational work for their assignments. Several meetings with the floor stylist
Audrey for the decors, clothing of the models, accessories, are organized.
Information on all themes and full scenarios is briefed to photographers and hair and make-up artist.
March 2010 Model shooting takes place – 2 photographers – 1 for model images – 1 for the pack shots
of the nails and Step by Step nails.
Two hectic 12-hour days of non-stop work so we can again spoil our customers for an entire winter
with great images in a colourful, informative, educational magazine.
Thanks to all!
