Native American Hoop Dance

T
Using up to 50 hoops, dancers combine fast-paced
precision and grace with intricate moves and creative designs
to symbolize various animals, flowers, and geometric shapes
that are meaningful to their heritage. While performing,
dancers must pass through each hoop. Some early dancers
believed that each pass-through added a year to their own life.
In recent years, women have become active participants
in the hoop dance competitions, which now draw up to 80
top North American dancers competing in four age group
divisions. Dancers are judged on precision, timing/rhythm,
showmanship, and speed, but creativity is also considered.
For details, call 602-252-8848, or visit heard.org/hoop.
he origins of our state are deeply rooted in the rich
and colorful history of the Native American people. On
February 7–8, thousands of spectators will witness the
living tradition of hoop dancing at the 25th Annual World
Championship Hoop Dance Contest held at the Heard
Museum in Phoenix, Arizona.
Hoop dancing is a long-standing form of tribal storytelling
and a passing of knowledge and culture from one generation
to the next. The continuous circle of the hoops used in the
dance symbolizes the never-ending circle of life and the
perpetual change of the seasons.

Arizona Hosts Super Bowl XLIX
F
ebruary 1, 2015, definitely will not be
your typical Sunday afternoon of NFL
football. This is Super Bowl XLIX, which is
being hosted here in Glendale, Arizona, for
the third time.
Whether or not you’re a football fan, the
Super Bowl, and all the ultra-glitzy hoopla
that accompanies it, is a really big deal
for our state. It’s estimated that the game
and activities leading up to it will generate
a million out-of-state visitors and around
6,000 media members from 30+ countries.
Up to 10,000 volunteer opportunities were
created to help in areas like hospitality,
Super Bowl Central, social media, and community outreach. The Super Bowl and its
halftime show continue to draw the largest U.S. television audiences in history—115 million
viewers watched Seattle crush Denver in last year’s game, with Bruno Mars performing at
halftime. This year, Katy Perry will headline the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show.
They don’t call it the “Super” Bowl for nothing! For more information, call 1-888-635-2273,
or log on to nfl.com/superbowl/49.
Sadly, the artist did not
copyright his work until
numerous reproductions
had been made, which left
him with little financial
gain and disillusioned
with “Love.”

o HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ARIZONA!
Arizona is often called the Grand Canyon
State and the Copper State, but did you know
that one of her nicknames is the Valentine
State? She is so called because Arizona
became the 48th state on Valentine’s Day,
February 14, 1912. Arizona also has the
distinction of being the last territory of the
contiguous U.S. to gain statehood.
