planned for our convention delegates
to attend and learn more about the
workings of our organization.
Before the close of our business session on Friday afternoon, we are going
to pay tribute posthumously to Past
Grand Venerable Joseph E. Fay.
National and State Chaplain Fr. Adam
Forno is planning a warm and touching
memorial tribute in Brother Fay’s
honor. We hope you will join us!
Joseph F. Rondinelli
State President
Grand Lodge of New York
Dear Brothers and Sisters of the
NYSOSIA Grand Lodge:
M
ay I begin this message by conveying to all my Brothers and
Sisters of the New York Grand
Lodge, the deep feeling of
pride and commitment that I continue
to experience as my first year as your
State President comes to a close.
Spring has finally arrived and I have
no doubt that we are all looking forward to the warm weather ahead. It
was quite a harsh winter and we’re all
glad that it’s finally behind us. This
time of year brings with it a sense of
renewal and the energy and enthusiasm
to begin again!
It’s hard to believe that our 108th
Annual State Convention is just a few
short weeks away. Time does go by
quickly and I am looking forward to
chairing my first convention. Our
State Convention Committee had a
very productive meeting and they are
gearing up for what promises to be
another exciting and most informative
gathering for New York OSIA. Please
meet with your lodge delegates and
discuss with them the importance of
attending and participating in all the
convention sessions. We have a full
agenda planned and I am asking you to
arrive on Thursday, May 29th, which is
the official opening of our State
Convention. The theme for this year’s
Convention will be Pride in
Membership … New York OSIA!” All
the brothers and sisters of the New
York Grand Lodge take tremendous
pride in their membership. There is no
question that the New York Grand
Lodge is the premier organization in
the State of New York and we are so
proud of our successes in our record of
achievement. Convention 2014 will
highlight just that!
Nominations for State Trustees,
Commissioners of Arbitration and
Commissioners of the Garibaldi
Meucci Museum will take place on
Friday. We are also presenting our
On Friday evening, we will pay tribute to State Immediate Past President
Thom Lupo and we will present him
with the well-deserved Bene Emeritus
Award. It is important that you join us
that evening to properly salute and recognize Brother Lupo in the traditional
New York OSIA way. It is most
important that we show appreciation to
our OSIA State Leaders and thank
them for all they have done on behalf
of all of us.
Many hours and much work and
dedication have gone into making our
Annual Convention an informative and
fun-filled weekend for all attending.
Be sure you take the time to thank our
Convention Committee during this
very special convention weekend.
During the month of March, I attended many lodge installation ceremonies.
It was a great honor and experience
representing the New York Grand
Lodge. I commend the lodges for conducting themselves in a most fraternal
manner, and thank them for their gracious welcome and warm hospitality.
My sincerest thanks and appreciation
to the State Officers, especially State
1st Vice President Carolyn Reres, State
2nd Vice President Robert Ferrito,
State Immediate Past President Thom
Lupo, State Orator Tony Naccarato,
and State Financial Secretary Biagio
Isgro who represented me when I
could not attend. Much continued success to all our newly elected filial
lodge officers!
On Sunday, March 23rd many of us
attended a wonderful concert performance to benefit the NYSOSIA Cancer
Research Charity featuring
International Vocal Artist Giada
Valenti. Kudos to Cancer Research
Chairperson Joseph Fratta, CoChairperson Mona Splendore and the
entire committee for planning such a
relaxing and enjoyable afternoon.
It was my pleasure to join with the
State Cooley’s Anemia committee as
they presented the “Year 2014 Annual
Culinary Classico Dine A Round” at
Verdi’s of Westbury. This event has
become quite a popular and wellattended fundraiser for our National
Charity. The highlight of the evening
was paying tribute to State First Lady
Joan Rondinelli. We thanked First
Lady Joan for her dedicated work and
devotion to the Cooley’s Anemia
Foundation. With 315 guests in attendance – this year’s function was a
tremendous financial and social success. Many thanks to Chairperson
Mary Naccarato, Co-Chairperson
Mildred Mancusi, and the entire committee for their dedication to raising
the necessary funds to one day find a
cure for this most dreaded disease.
The April 5th State Leadership
Seminar held at the Antonio Meucci
Lodge #213 was an informative day
for our lodge leaders. We also thank
the Antonio Meucci Lodge and
President Teresa Riverso for their cordial and gracious hospitality. There
were 30 lodges in attendance and many
said it was a very productive and
enjoyable day. I must congratulate
and thank the presenters at the seminar
– each of which did a great job in
explaining the various aspects of
OSIA.
On Friday, April 11th the New York
Grand Lodge Foundation, Inc., hosted
the 32nd Anniversary Golden Lion
Awards Dinner at the beautiful Garden
City Hotel. With over 200 guests in
attendance we lauded our distinguished
honorees; Frank Carone, Esq.; Anthony
Malatino; and the Honorable Edward
Mangano, Nassau County Executive.
Our honorees were beaming with pride
and were delighted to be a part of this
very special evening for New York
OSIA. I wish to especially thank State
2nd Vice President Robert Ferrito who
chaired the 2014 Golden Lion Dinner.
In addition, may I extend sincerest
thanks to the entire Golden Lion
Dinner and Journal Committee – Carol
DiTrapani, Eileen Stavis, Nancy
DiFiore Quinn, Anita Rosato, and
Annette Lankewish for preparing such
a wonderful evening.
Our Spring Plenary Session meeting
on Saturday, April 26th was a tremendous success, thanks to the hospitality
extended by the Brothers of the
Rockland Lodge #2176 led by
President Nicholas Sfraga. The plenary meeting went very smoothly and a
great deal of work was accomplished.
A draft budget was approved for April
1, 2014 – March 31, 2015; current and
future fundraising plans were discussed; membership issues were
addressed; it was announced that the
Naccarato Family will be awarded
2014 Family of the Year (Chairperson
Joanne Spera); Joan Rondinelli and
Louis Fazzone will receive the Dr.
Vincenzo Sellaro Awards (Chairperson
John Fratta); Thom Lupo will be our
2014 Brother Bene Emeritus
(Chairperson Nancy DiFiore Quinn. In
addition, Lucy Codella will receive the
State President’s Lifetime Achievement
Award at our special OSIA 109th
anniversary event in June and National
Past President Joseph DiTrapani will
be inducted into the New York OSIA
Hall of Fame on that same day. The
Grand Lodge of New York Hall of
Fame was established on June 22, 1995
to memorialize the contributions of
distinguished members of the New
York State Grand Lodge who have
achieved the highest level of leadership
on a National level, that is, Supreme
Venerable or National President. We
thank all the Chairpersons and their
committees for their commitment to
the task at hand in making their selections. Congratulations to all!
On April 27th State Trustee Keith
Wilson chaired the annual bowling
tournament at Farmingdale Lanes. As
State President, I was given the honor
of throwing out the first ball to kick off
the morning. Unfortunately, I must
have been very tired - since I did throw
a strike. Hopefully, next year I’ll do
better. Everyone had a great time and
we will learn the results of the tournament at the state convention. Thanks
to Brother Keith and his committee for
a job well done!
As I conclude my first year as your
State President, it gives me a deep
sense of pride to realize all of the
accomplishments we have made
together. So many Brothers and Sisters
have contributed their time and talent
this year on committees and commissions with a true spirit of enthusiasm
and fraternalism. I thank each and
every one of you. There are many
important New York OSIA events coming up in the next few months and I
certainly hope that many of you are
planning to attend.
We were saddened by the sudden and
unexpected passing of Sister Jennifer
Rube, President of the Vincent
Lombardi Lodge #2270 in Rochester.
Jennifer was our OSIA Gift Gallery
Chairperson and worked closely with
the lodges in District VIII. She was
proud of her Italian heritage and took
great pride in her leadership role as
Lodge President and her involvement
with the NYSCSJ. Many will miss
her.
Continue to remember and pray for
so many of our dear New York OSIA
Brothers and Sisters who have sadly
departed from our midst - and to those
who are struggling with serious illness.
One of the reasons we belong to our
beloved Order is the brotherhood and
sisterhood we feel towards one another
- and we must be mindful of those in
their time of need.
Always remember - the one thing
that links us together is our extraordinary Italian heritage and we must be
proud of who we are - and at every
opportunity - boast of our membership
in the Order Sons of Italy in America.
Joan and I look forward to seeing
many more of you as we continue to
visit our great State of New York.
Once again, thank you for allowing me
to serve as the State President of this
very special Grand Lodge!
Fraternally,
Joseph F.Rondinelli

DearDear Brothers and Sisters:
In the Book of Ecclesiastes (3:1, 4) we
read, “There is an appointed time for
everything. And there is a time for every
event under heaven…. There is a time to
weep and a time to laugh.”
On Saturday, April 5, 2014, NY State President Rondinelli, conducted the
NY Grand Lodge Leadership Seminar at the Antonio Meucci Lodge #213 in
White Plains, NY. The well attended session included lodge presidents, state
and national officers, discussed topics of operational techniques in conducting
the business of the Order. Some of the attendees are show at the cake cutting ceremony to celebrate the common bond of the participants.
On April 1, 2014, State President Joseph Rondinelli attended the Cooley’s
Anemia Dine-a-Round, at which his wife, State First Lady Joan Rondinelli
(2nd from left), a NYS past chairperson of the NY Cooley’s Anemia
Committee, was recognized for her leadership and fundraising in the many
years she served in that position. Also in photo are the current committee
chairlady Mary Naccarato and co-chair Mildred Mancusi (right).

James Martin, Jesuit priest and author
of
several books including Laughing
with the Saints: Joy, Humor and Laughter
in the Spiritual Life, (Harper Collins),
speaking at the Los Angeles Religious
Education Congress in 2007, said that
“joy, humor and laugher are necessary,
healthy and have a long tradition in the
church, and one that we ignore at our
peril. Joy has a long distinguished history among the saints and spiritual masters
as an essential element for spiritual
health. When you meet someone truly in
touch with God, they are joyful, aren’t
they?”
Father Martin offers the wisdom of St.
Teresa of Avila, a Doctor of the Church
for her insight into the ways of God, who
once said: “A sad nun is a bad nun. I am
more afraid of one unhappy sister than a
crowd of evil spirits…What would happen
if we hid what little sense of humor we
had? Let each of us humbly use this to
cheer others.” He further notes besides
cheering others humor heals, deepens our
relationship with God, fosters good relations and helps us with our work.
It is with these thoughts in mind that I
suggested to President Rondinelli that the
NY OSIA Grand Lodge publish a humor
book . In a recent memorandum to
National Officers, State Officers and
Lodge Presidents, NYS Past President
Nancy DiFiore Quinn invited OSIA
members
to
submit
humorous
stories/jokes/one liner quotes to share
with our brothers and sisters, relatives
and friends of OSIA. Nancy noted the
submissions ought not be off-colored or
embarrassing but like those that might be
published in Reader’s Digest. It will be an
inexpensive, soft-cover booklet and a
fund raiser for the NY Grand Lodge. It
will no doubt make a great Christmas gift!
Reverend R. Adam Forno
State and National
Chaplain, OSIA
I will edit all stories/jokes/one liners
with an anticipated publication well
before Christmas. So, please do not delay
in sending your submissions to: HUMOR
BOOK, NY Grand Lodge Office, 2102
Bellmore Ave., Bellmore, NY, 11710 ; or
e-mail them to [email protected]
or bring them to the NY OSIA Grand
Lodge Convention in May.
THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISIONS IS AUGUST 15th!
Here is an example from Nancy:
A man walks into work and both of his
ears are all bandaged up. The boss asks,
“What happened to your ears?” He says,
“Yesterday I was ironing a shirt when the
phone rang and I accidentally answered
the iron.” The boss responded, “Well that
explains the one ear, but what happened to
your other ear?” The man said, “Well, I
had to call the doctor!”
Lastly, two humorous quotes from saints
to
motivate you to share your
stories/jokes/one-liner quotes:
A journalist asked the Pope: “How many
people work in the Vatican? The Holy
Father responded, “About half of them”.
St. John XXIII
“Lord, give me chastity, but not yet.” St.

Golden Lion Editor
Article by Florence Gatto
Thoroughly enjoyed the Golden Lion article on Redheads by Florence
Gatto. Mainly because it struck some chords. My parents fell in love at first
sight and it mainly (not downplaying hormones) had to do with hair. He loved
her curly chestnut mane and she adored his auburn locks and freckles. She fervently hoped to have at least one child with red hair and his peaches and cream
skin. Never happened that way, first two daughters were very light-skinned
with blue eyes and blond hair, third had olive skin and black curly locks and
then I came - brown hair and non descript skin tone. Of course I resolved all
that by the time I was a teenager by becoming a redhead. Then Mamma hoped
for a red haired grandchild - to no avail. Of the 12, every different color but
red.
Flo, your articles always ring a bell with me, because they convey
what we have experienced. This time, I've made it my business to let you
know how much what you said made an impact.
A presto,
Teresa and Frank Cerasuola,

On April 1, 2014, the 16th Annual Cooley’s Anemia Dine-Around, to benefit the
Cooley’s Anemia Foundation, was held at Verdi’s of Westbury. The day began as a
bright and sunny day and ended with a marvelous tribute to the generosity of all
the guests that participated in this very worthy event. It was wonderful to see so
many Order Sons of Italy Lodges and their guests, enjoying the evening. The
Committee is very proud to announce that over three-hundred guests were in attendance and that the net profits will exceed $30,000.
Forty-eight restaurants participated by donating their house specialties to the
event. Wine was donated by our OSIA National Foundation President, Joseph
DiTrapani, Carol DiTrapani, and NYS Financial Secretary, Biagio Isgro, JR. Banfi
Wines of Brookville, also donated a variety of wines. The Committee thanks all
the Lodges and friends who graciously donated raffle gifts, table sponsors, canisters and direct donations. Mary and Tony Naccarato continued to underwrite the
cost of the catering hall.
NYS President and First Lady, Joseph and Joan Rondinelli, attended along with
National Fifth Vice-President, Nancy DiFiore Quinn, National Foundation
President, Joseph DiTrapani and many other National and State Officers. Anthony
Viola, CA Foundation President and Gina Cioffi, CA Executive Director also participated, along with a large representation from local CA Chapters.
This year the event honored the NYS First Lady Joan Rondinelli, for her hard
work and dedication to Cooley’s Anemia during the last six years. Her excellent
efforts helped improve the quality of life of all Cooley’s Anemia Patients.
The Dine-Around Committee is comprised of representatives from OSIA filial
lodges throughout NYS. The Committee did an outstanding job of reaching out to
Lodges, members and donors to insure that the event would be a financial and
social success.
The theme of the night was “Come, Be Part of The Cure”. OSIA, The Cooley’s
Anemia Foundation and the Committee are grateful for everyone’s support and
generosity and we look forward to the day that we will celebrate finding the cure
for Cooley’s Anemia. n
T
he New York Grand Lodge Foundation’s 32nd Golden Lion
Dinner was a tremendous success with over 200 guests gathered
at the world-renowned Garden City Hotel.
The committee began working early Friday afternoon making sure
that all plans were going according to schedule. Seating arrangements
were checked … beautiful floral arrangements were placed on the
tables … exquisite dinnerware was set … commemorative journals
were placed throughout the room … the dais was set with presentation
pieces, banners and flowers. Every detail was being attended to for
what turned out to be both a wonderful social and financial success for
the New York Grand Lodge Foundation, Inc. Foundation President
Joseph Rondinelli and General Dinner Chairman Robert Ferrito
expertly kept the flow of the evening’s events running smoothly.
Guests began arriving about 7:00 P.M. to pay tribute to our 2014
Golden Lion Honorees, Frank V. Carone, Esq., Partner, Abrams
Fensterman LLP; Anthony V. Malatino, Senior Vice
President/Financial Advisor, Malatino & Associates at Morgan
Stanley; and Nassau County Executive Honorable Edward P.
Mangano.
Each had a story to tell about achieving the “American Dream” and
how very proud they were of their Italian heritage. The honorees all
reached the pinnacle of success in their individual fields of endeavor
and benevolently give back to the community at large.
The success of this event is so very essential to the fund-raising
efforts of the New York Grand Lodge Foundation, Inc. It is this
Golden Lion Awards Dinner that allows us to continue to fund so
many worthwhile charitable organizations such as Autism,
Alzheimer’s, and the Cooley’s Anemia Foundation. The New York
Grand Lodge Foundation also makes every effort to assist in the
preservation of our Italian heritage by funding cultural events and
encouraging the study of the Italian language.
Sincere thanks to our National and State Officers, filial lodges and
special dignitaries for supporting this event. Whether you purchased a
journal ad … or attended the dinner, your support of this main fund
raising event of the New York Grand Lodge Foundation is sincerely
appreciated. n

Commission For Social Justice
“Fighting Bias,
Building Pride”
Louis J. Gallo Jr.
CSJ Chairman’s Message
Dar Brothers and Sisters
I hope you’ve seen the spring issue of Italian America magazine. On page 28 the
NYS CSJ is featured regarding our exploits during the previous quarters. It was all
possible because of the collaboration and dedication of our lodge base, Board members, and state officers. For all that involvement I say a hearty thank you! As long
as we maintain such solidarity as we address critical issues we will always succeed.
As the last quarter opened we continued to face the wrenching issue of the Aflac
Corporation “Family Business” ad. In the prior quarter we spent time mobilizing our
lodge base by urging our lodge and Board members to send e-mails, Facebook posts,
and phone calls demanding that Aflac drop the ad, but to no avail. Consequently, we
changed our tactics.
We began to network nationwide with other Italian groups to put more pressure
on Aflac. Working with One Voice Coalition in New Jersey, the National Italian
American Human Relations Foundation and the National American Bar Association
in Chicago, we flooded Aflac with more letters and e-mails. We even decided to
choose two agencies in Chicago and New Jersey and flooded them with phone calls
all day urging these agents in these offices to cajole corporate to drop the ad. Aflac
did not respond.
At this point I did some research and discovered that the Dr. Martin Luther King
Center in Atlanta, Georgia, awarded Aflac a “Salute to Greatness” accolade. I wrote
to the Center that the ad was in no manner reflective of the spirit and intentions of
Dr. King and implored them to aid us in requesting that Aflac drop the ad. I also discovered in my research that Fortune 500 magazine published by Time, Inc. dubbed
Aflac the “Most Admired and Ethical Company” in the health insurance field. I
wrote to Time and told them that nothing could be farther from the truth! I urged
them to watch the 34-second commercial, and it would show that their award would
be an embarrassment to them. I implored Time to intercede also on our behalf and
have Aflac drop the ad. Neither of these efforts produced any effect!
Thanks to the efforts of the above groups we were able to secure letters from Jesse
Jackson’s Rainbow Coalition and a Serbian group in Chicago, which wrote letters to
Aflac to urge them to drop the ad, and still we did not prevail.
The Executive board has advised me though to continue our efforts, especially
since the ad still runs. I will re-contact our national collaborators to decide on a new
course of action.
In the meantime Board member Angela DeCosimo, our Media Monitor, has spent
much time researching and monitoring the TV series “New Mob Wives.” She has
prepared a letter and an e-mail chronicle of communications for the Board’s review.
At our May meeting we will entertain her efforts and decide on a course of action, if
any. Thank you Angela!
While fighting bias and bigotry I kept a close eye on organization-building.
During the quarter I contacted all District Chairpersons to check on their efforts in
recruiting lodge liaisons. I found that they were trying very hard to do their best, but
progress has been minimal. At the Leadership Forum sponsored by the Grand Lodge
on April 5th I made an impassioned plea to all lodge presidents to forge ahead vigorously in this regard so as to aid us in our quest of building a strong grass-roots
organization at the community level. I make the same plea again in this column!
Please help! Through the efforts of the presidents we hope we can succeed.
During the course of the aforementioned, I was afforded two gracious invitations
by two institutions. Once again Dr. Arthur Flug of the Holocaust Center of
Queensborough Community College invited me back to his internship class on bias
and discrimination, where again I instructed the students on how to address a personal bias attack, how organizations like CSJ address such biases and the criteria we
use in deciding whether we address the bias or not. Dr. Flug informed me after the
class session that from now on I would be a regular at these sessions on these topics
every semester. Obviously, such a circumstance will allow me to extend such knowledge to a whole host of students from the younger generation, which will afford us
the possibility of changing the whole mindset of the future. Quite an opportunity
indeed!
The second opportunity involved an alert provided me by AATI (American
Association of Teachers of Italian). In an e-mail message to me the President of
AATI, Craig Butler, informed me of a bilingual show at the Queens Theater in
Flushing Meadows produced by a Simona Rodano of Incanto Productions in Astoria
on March 21st entitled “Sempreverde” (Evergreen). Literally given a ringside seat
10 • Golden Lion • April-May-June 2014
free of charge, I was fascinated by the production! With colorful staging and costumes, athletic acrobats and aerialists, unrelenting kaleidoscopic videos, and strobe
lighting she pounded the message about the need to preserve our environment, minimize waste, and recycle—-all of it done with a combination of Italian and English
dialogue and student participation of first through fourth graders. They never lost
their attention for the- little-over-one-hour program! Absolutely amazing!
Simona thanked me for coming, and I told her CSJ would do some kind of youth
program with her in the future.
Naturally, the Sempreverde event leads us to a discussion of positive imagery and
promoting culture. Firstly, Dr. Mario Mignone of the Center of Italian Studies at
SUNY Stony Brook informed me in an e-mail message about a project on City
Island, the Bronx, that involved a request by the Italian Hospital Society for a variance before the Board of Standards and Appeals of the City of New York for senior
citizen housing for Italian Americans. If the project manager was awarded the variance from the city, it would allow Italian American seniors housing suffused with
Italian culture on the premises until the day they died. CSJ was asked to intercede to
try to help get the variance. Encouraging Board members to write, some of us did
send e-mails to the Board of Standards and Appeals conjuring the Board to grant the
variance. We still await its decision.
Having opened a channel with B’nai B’rith as described last quarter, both CSJ
and BB have decided to strengthen their bonds through the launching of a movie.
Board member Liz Rizzo, our Researcher, found an engaging film on Movie Pak
entitled “Perlasca.” Giorgio Perlasca was an Italian meat vendor for the Italian army
and personally witnessed the horrible treatment of Jews during WW2. Disgusted by
what he saw, he decided to launch a one-man campaign to save 5,000 Hungarian
Jews. exploiting crafty trickery, diplomacy, and outright bribery, he did all he could
to save Jews, and he succeeded! He was eventually honored by Hungary and Israel,
and a film was made to publicize his triumphant efforts.
We want to show this film in the presence of Jews and Italians! We are attempting to show this film at a Nassau and Suffolk venue in the spring and fall respectively
and at the Garibaldi Meucci Museum in August. Stay tuned and don’t miss it!
We didn’t stop there. On April 10th District 3 Chairman Tony Corsello,
Capodanno Lodge Liaison Frank Cicero, and I returned to St. Clare Elementary
school to speak to parents and students directly. Tony physically presented an explanation and portrayal of our positive image materials to parents, and I presented my
now legendary “History in Box” program to the 6th grade class. Frank topped off our
presentation with a plea to join the Capodanno Lodge . We particularly stressed
through our presentations the necessity of studying the Italian language in order to
pass down our legacy and heritage to posterity.. Principal Jo Rossicone was elated by
our presence, and we hope it resonated with the parents and the students.
Turning our attention to District 1, lodge representatives are working laboriously
and assiduously to launch a smorgasbord of Italian culture on Saturday, June 28th,
from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Frank Brush Barn property in Smithtown under the auspices of CSJ. The diversified program is just about set, and the team is working vigorously now attracting vendors and sponsors and addressing matters relative to the
grounds.
As usual, interrupting our forward advances, another crisis emerged affecting
[positive imagery. On April 8th I was informed by President Joe Franzone of the
Marconi Lodge of a rumor that the Islip School district on Long Island, Suffolk
County, was considering terminating Italian in the upcoming budget. When heard,
we sprung into action immediately, as we are so sensitive of these occurrences! I
immediately contacted the Assistant Superintendent of Instruction to verify the
rumor, and she said it was true! I requested a meeting and got one. In the meantime
President Franzone gave me the name of a teacher of Italian, and I organized a luncheon with her and a colleague. At that meeting I was provided with details of the
Italian language program in the district, so I would be able to attend the meeting with
the Assistant Superintendent equipped with the knowledge of the situation. Aided by
our counselor Mike Santo, I attended the meeting and met with junior and senior
high school officials. In summary, I requested that the district attempt to maintain
present programs this year, and I would meet with the teachers and engage in a
recruitment campaign for the upcoming school year. At the next budget hearing of
the school district on April 23rd the teachers informed me that the Assistant
Superintendent mentioned that the district would work hard to preserve Italian in the
lower grades. There was no mention of any cuts at the hearing. I am presently planning to meet with the teachers to strategize a campaign to strengthen the Italian program. Stay tuned for further developments.
However, besides all these developments, nothing was harder to take this quarter
than the sudden passing of Jennifer Rube’, our District 8 Chairwoman! We were literally blitzed!
When Jennifer accepted the chairmanship, she WAS undoubtedly our CSJ point
person in District 8, no holds barred! She literally launched a juggernaut! She was
trying very hard to recruit lodge liaisons, knowing my fierce directive about this.
She also was preparing a district essay contest, and had it pretty much organized.
Three days before her passing she requested from me money prizes for the contest
for junior and senior high students, which I was ready to present to the Board.
To memorialize her enthusiastic incipient efforts, the Board has decided to contribute $100 to her lodge’s scholarship fund and to also buy a $250 brick at the
Museum, both to be presented at the convention this year.
We will miss her sorely, and I can only imagine in wonderment the great potential
she would have unleashed. It would have been sensational!
Rest in peace, sister. We will never forget you, and thanks so much for all you
did in such a short time. God bless!
Fraternally,
Lou
An Angel in Waiting
2014 State Bowling Tournament
By Debra Vessa - Dr. Vincenzo Sellaro Lodge #2319, Smithtown
Strike, strike, strike was the most uttered yell at the Grand Lodge’s 42nd Bowling
Tournament held on April 27, 2014, at Farmingdale Lanes. The committee led by
Chairman Keith Wilson provided another successful event for all to enjoy a morning
of fraternity and friendly competition. State President Rondinelli was there to show
his support and to give instructions on how to get a strike. 85 bowlers representing
nine lodges from District 1 and 2 participated in the annual event. All the participants
had a great time and they all look forward to the 2015 tournament to resume their
friendly rivalry.
G
randma Rosa sat at the kitchen table and lifted the lid of the small, tapestry
box. Inside were earrings and bracelets set with large, colored stones and a
stickpin made of Austrian crystal. But beneath the colored costume trinkets
was another piece of jewelry that her wrinkled fingers hurried to find: “This,” she
said as she retrieved a delicate, oval cameo, “I want you to have.”
Grandma Rosa, who was born in Italy, spoke little English. An accident that left
her hearing impaired made her ability to learn the language a constant struggle. On
that evening of my sixteenth birthday, however, her words were simple and perfectly understood: “I am old. I will die soon. I want you to have this.”
The cameo, which was trimmed with a silver-like metal, depicted two angels sitting in the clouds, one holding a trumpet. Above the clouds, a winged cherub held
what looked like a small rhinestone shaped like a star. I remember thinking that
the cameo’s design resembled a Renaissance painting or a portrait, perhaps, with
its own story to tell.
Grandma placed her hand over mine. “This is very special,” I understood her to
say. “Always take care of it.”
It wouldn’t be until ten years later, on the night that Grandma died, that I would
take her cameo out of the small cardboard box that I had tucked away in my dresser drawer. It was then that I would hold it in my hand and remember a woman
whose life, to me, had become a reflection of wisdom and strength. The cameo,
which had been carefully protected in the drawer beside my bed, had become a
reminder of her generosity and her love.
Silently, I traced the edge of the cameo with my finger and, for the first time, I
noticed what looked like another tiny angel hidden in its design. I examined the
cameo more closely almost certain that the angel hadn’t been there before. Soon, I
found myself searching, almost desperately, for some obscure message; some
meaning hidden in the cameo’s etching; some silent significance that I was sure
Grandma had understood but could not explain.
A few days later, still mystified by Grandma’s gift, I decided to take it to a local
jeweler. It was then that I finally came to understand the intrinsic value of the
keepsake that she had bestowed to me. The silver-like metal that trimmed the
piece of jewelry I had assumed was costume was 14-karat white gold. The transparent material that illuminated the carvings of its wispy figures was a delicate
antique seashell and the cameo, which I was told came from Italy, was older than
Grandma herself. Most likely, it belonged to her mother.
I will never know exactly how old Grandma was when she acquired the cameo,
and I can only guess from whom. I will never know what spurred her decision that
I should receive it. But there is no doubt in my mind that its sentimental value –
to Grandma -- far exceeded its monetary worth. Though Grandma Rosa was gone
and more than ten years had passed since we sat with her jewelry box between us,
she still had managed to affirm that there can be an unspoken bond between a
granddaughter and a grandmother -- perhaps even a great-grandmother -- that can
transcend not only language but time and place as well.
When I think about Grandma Rosa I often envision myself, years from now,
placing her cameo in my own daughter’s hand as a silent token of the power of
generations of a mother’s love.
“This is very special,” I can hear myself explain. “Remember: Always take care
of it.” n

T
Candles, Candles
he only candles I knew about years ago
were happy birthday candles on a cake
and little votive candles in red glasses
flickering day and night in front of a patron
saint. Of course there were candles in
church and I devoutly lit one each Sunday
after mass. They used to be real paraffin
candles. We lit the wick for a real flame
taken from another
candle on the multitiered candle stand.
Now, I put a donation
in a slot and push a
button for a little bulb
to light up. I understand it’s safer, but I
ask, “How long does
the little bulb stay
on?” I want my saint
to know I prayed. I
hope my prayers do not go up in virtual
smoke.
A while ago I was invited to a “candle
party.” My first reaction was,
“This would be a séance in a dark room
Illuminated only by candlelight.”
Instead, I found a business-like atmosphere ready to reap in profits. Candles
from citronella buckets to handmade
beeswax tapers were on display. There
were tea lites, glitter glass jars, candles in
seashells, and scents from lavender to
spices, for yoga class. Some had fruity
names- pineapple crush, ginger peach,
cherry vanilla. “Were these edible?”
trays. And to think, my mother kept a
few old candle stubs in a drawer to use in
case the lights went out!
My experience is that burning candles
can be hazardous. I used a centerpiece
with red candles once. No one told me
they would drip and stain my best tablecloth. That was not as bad as the accumulation of smoke damage from candles that
occurred in churches in Italy.
The first time I went to the Vatican to
see the Sistine Chapel, I wished I were a
giraffe so that I could be closer to see
Michelangelo’s magnificent painted ceiling. I did not realize the colors were
blurred and dulled by soot, grime and
residue from the centuries of candle burning during ecclesiastical ceremonies. The
small sacred chapel is where the Conclave
of Cardinals select a new Pope. Then
years later when I was studying in Rome,
my group visited the Cappella Sistina
after hours. A team of artists were restoring the masterpiece. As the smoky haze
was carefully cleaned off the frescoes a
splendid surprise of bright hues, vibrant
colors and fine details of “The Creation”
were reborn. Now we can enjoy the original vivid colors that Michelangelo
Buonarroti intended.
We had some fun with the Swiss guards
too. The doors from the chapel to the
Papal apartment were open and we
peeked inside. The guards did their job
and quickly crossed their lances to block
our path. They smiled at the Americani”.
Then, there were those with holistic
claims for aromatherapy and others to create a glowing romantic setting. Designer
fragrances were infused in expensive
candles to permeate the home and soul. I
kept thinking, “What about my allergies?”
As I left the gathering I knew I had to
buy something. Did I want floating,
flameless or re -igniting birthday candles? I could not decide until I saw one
that would be my favorite with the The
Scent of Jasmine.
Then they said some kitchen candles
were excellent to disperse fish cooking
odors. I think brewing coffee and baking
cinnamon cookies works well too!
Pricey accessories included–Liberace type
candelabras, candle rings, and mirror

A great experience ...
just don't ask for the meatball recipe
by Mike Cutillo - Contributing Writer
"Wow, who made the meatballs?"
If I heard that question once, I heard it dozens of times as I dished out those
meatballs at a city of Geneva celebration called the Festival of Nations at
the middle and high schools in April.
I usually answered this way: "Well, a bunch of us at the Sons of Italy made
them."
Sometimes, the questions were more pointed.
"Hey, did John Gregoria make these?"
"I'll bet Jamie Kaim made the meatballs, didn't he?"
"These meatballs taste like Tony DiCostanzo's. Did he
make them?"
To all, I answered: "A bunch of us had a hand in making
them."
It was all very good-natured banter, and I enjoyed that
folks were trying to guess who had their hands in the
meatball mix.
But sometimes the question was simply unanswerable: "What goes in your
meatballs?"
Whoa, whoa, whoa. That, my friends, is a well-guarded secret. I jokingly
told folks if I revealed that I would have to kill them. It's like asking someone at Krispy Kreme how they make their doughnuts ... or someone at
Coca-Cola the recipe for Coke.
There are iron-clad, never-tell-a-soul trade secrets ... and then you take it up
a notch to meatball secrets.
The most enjoyable thing for me, though, was simply being a part of the
Festival of Nations. I attended the first one seven years ago, a nice little
event that drew about 2,000 folks. The festival, a colorful - and tasty - celebration of Geneva's diverse cultures, has grown exponentially
since. A collaboration between the city school district and Hobart and
William Smith Colleges, it's estimated that it draws somewhere between
6,000 and 7,000 visitors these days.
And of course, almost all of them want a free meatball or two. I mean, who
can resist?
Steve Muzzi, a social studies teacher at Geneva High, has been dishing out
those meatballs as a representative of Geneva Men's Lodge 2397 for the past
few years and asked me to join him in that capacity this year. He told me I
would be amazed at how the festival has grown over the years ...and how
insanely popular those meatballs are.
In fact, he noted that last year our booth ran out of them way too early. This
year, we made more to make sure there was no repeat of that flaw.
And little did we know that organizers also planned for our table to dish out
samples of greens and beans made and donated by a local restaurant and
cups of an exquisite antipasto prepared by a nationally renowned cooking
instructor and donated by the school district.
In other words, those organizers assured our booth's insane popularity for
the festival's entire two hours. Throw in some Sinatra music playing in the
background and some red-white-and-green student artwork hanging on the
walls behind us, and you had a real slice of Italy.
To our downstate friends who may not realize it, even though Geneva is a
small city, it is quite diverse. And our local lodge was proud to be a part of
the festival. We just weren't about to give out any meatball secrets.

Celebrating Revered Italian Traditions
Gabriele D’Annunzio Lodge No. 321, Schenectady. Lodge Chaplain, Father
Dominic Isopo, blesses the altar and food in the Festa San Giuseppe celebration.
One hundred members and friends attended the annual celebration.
FeASt oF St. JoSePH. The John Michael Marino Lodge #1389 of Port Washington, continued the annual Italian tradition of honoring St. Joseph by replicating
an altar dedicated to this beloved saint. This year’s event took place on Saturday,
March 22’s Mass at St. Peter of Alcantara Church and Our Lady of Fatima Church
in Port Washington. After attending Mass, Officers and members of the Lodge, led
by Preisdent Anthony Canetta (front center), were on hand to distribute bread, oranges, and zeppole to parishioners as they exited the church. Monetary donations
were also collected for the Outreach Program of each church.
Fr. John Papallo Lodge 2684 - Smithtown. The Annual Blessing of the Bread,

sold and the proceeds with other donations were given to the Church of St. Rocco

On March 1st, the John Michael Marino Lodge #1389 of Port Washington
hosted Carnevale Italiano 2014. The event was well attended by members, family,
and friends. Participants donned beautiful Venetian masks as part of the festivities
and literally ate and danced the night away. One of the oldest traditions originating
in Italy, Carnevale is celebrated around the world forty days before Easter as a
final party before the restrictions of Lent.
