Rescue Calendar - Medina County SPCA
Hawkeye FALL 2015 Established 1985 Hawkeye is pateintly waiting for his new family to walk through the doors of the MCSPCA. Would you like to be his family? Honoring Medina County’s First Responders A special opportunity to support the MCSPCA, 2015-2016 Rescue Calendar The MCSPCA Rescue Team is honoring Medina County’s first responders in a unique way. They’ve spent countless hours visiting fire, rescue, and police departments, photographing the first responders with one or more of our shelter animals. The reason for their hard work was to compile the photos in a 15-month, 2016 calendar honoring our local heroes. Distribution of the calendar began on the 14th anniversary of 9-11, bringing to mind those other heroes whose names are not mentioned in the history books. Proceeds from this special calendar will go toward purchasing items to further MCSPCA’s mission. Participating first responders were recognized in a reception at Buckeye Woods Park on September 11. Calendar sponsors, SPCA volunteers, and rescue team members and families were also invited. What a great way to celebrate and to thank the often-forgotten heroes of our community for their courage and sacrifices! Capital Campaign We can make the lives of the animals We have wonderful news! Not only have we raised over $400,000 so far in our Capital Campaign, we now have a deal to purchase the Comfort Kennels property at 8790 Guilford Road in Seville. Closing is scheduled for October 26, 2015, with possession on November 1. The property is zoned as agricultural, and we’ve received Help us Make this Dream a reality Online Giving You can make donations to the Medina County SPCA at www.medinacountyspca.com MCSPCA DONATE TODAY While this is a wonderful achievement, we still have more work to do to meet our Capital Campaign goal of $575,000. These funds are needed to ensure that we can cover our short-term operating costs (the Capital Campaign has cannibalized most of our regular donations) and to rebuild the barn. We’re so grateful to all the animal-lovers who are giving their time, energy and money to make this dream a reality. This property will be a healthier, happier place for the rescue animals of Medina County. Humphrey is a hound with a very real need, the need to be part of your family. Stop by and play with him for a bit and I bet you won’t be able to walk away from those sweet hound eyes. They say, “Take me home!” HUMANE NEWS New Humane Officer Joins MCSPCA MSPCA welcomes Kate Marshall as the new Humane Officer SPCA Medina County. Her main responsibilities are to investigate complaints of animal abuse, neglect, abandonment and cruelty and to educate the public in the mission of the SPCA. Kate brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position. Her employment history reveals a person with a deep concern for the welfare of both humans and animals. both anesthesia and instrument care. Non-surgical hours were spent performing in-house blood chemistry, heart worm and fecal analysis tests. In addition, she managed, scheduled and organized the Boarding and Grooming Facility for the hospital. Despite this seemingly heavy workload, Kate began her studies at Curry County Community College Oh, yes. There is one more title Kate is especially proud of: Mom. Her daughter Sydney, 18, is a Freshman at Heidelberg University and son Marshall, 17, is a Junior at Medina County Career Center. It was the influence of her military family that guided her career choice to join the Navy after high school. For eight years she traveled the world as an Oceans Systems Technician/ Analyst, earning the rank of E-5 2nd Class Petty Officer. During her time in the Navy and the years since her honorable discharge, Kate has spent her volunteering and employment hours assisting with or directly caring for animals. She worked extensively with horses in both American and German Shelters overseas, achieving certification as an Equine Sports Massage Therapist. She assisted in the handling of horses during hippotherapy, which aides both horses and humans through difficult times. As a civilian, Kate gravitated to Animal Hospitals for her employment. At the Chapparal Small Animal Hospital in Clovis, N.M., she spent a year handling routine clerical duties such as scheduling surgeries and managing client records. After a year, she knew she needed to do more. She moved on to All Pets Animal hospital, also in Clovis, where she spent the next four years assisting in surgery to include patient preparation, surgery setup, and monitoring became an SPCA Rescue Agent for our own MCSPCA, handling the full range of duties required by that position. By 2010, she was well equipped to serve as the Humane Officer for the North Ridgeville Police Department. While serving there, she obtained her Safe Capture International Certificate for Chemical Immobilization of Animals. While it’s obvious that Kate is highly qualified to multi-task with the best of them, this writer sent her a challenge she could not meet. During a phone call inquiring if now was a good time for an interview, she reluctantly replied, ‘I’m sorry, it’s not. Right now I am up to my elbows in kittens.’ Now there is a lady who has her priorities in order. Kate Marshall and Scruffy to become a qualified Medical Technician. She has since served in Medina County with both the Lodi and Lafayette Fire Departments as an EMT-Intermediate. Family transitions brought her to Ohio in 2002 where her passion for the welfare of animals continued. In very little time, Kate was hired by the Berea Animal Shelter where she assisted in the initial assessment and health check for all shelter animals. In her normal pattern of always seeking more responsibility, she PowderPUFF Scruffy Scruffy is a five year old Maltipoo mix who finally found his forever home last month. Timid with new people, Scruffy just needed a family willing to be patient and caring with him. He found just what he was looking for on August 14th! Scruffy was known for loving his belly rubs and the MCSPCA volunteers were more than glad to obligue him. Who doesn’t love a little belly rub on occassion! Scruffy, we will miss you! Happy Endings TANK Once a Castaway Anyone seeing Robbie, um, now Tank with his new pet parent, Joshua Erskine, would not believe that not too long ago he was a castaway, wandering the streets and resting on strangers’ porches. That life style changed when a sympathetic human brought the shy and frightened white Mastiff to the MCSPCA. He was obviously hurting from an ugly, open wound on his back. At first Robbie was too scared to leave his kennel which was lined with soft blankets and supplied with an assortment of balls and squeaky toys. After a life on the streets, maybe he thought his kennel was probably a doggie Hyatt Regency. In a couple of days Robbie charmed everyone at the shelter with gentleness and cute antics. The vet treated his infected wound and removed a benign tumor. During his recovery, Robbie enjoyed belly rubs to last him a lifetime. His payment was lots of licks and love to all those who fell for his puppy eyes. Since he was permitted only short walks outside because of the surgery, he was allowed freedom in the large room whose one corner was well-stocked with an assortment of dog Drop by the MCSPCA to purchase your very own Rescue Calender and support your local MCSPCA today! MeantToBe BestFriends toys. It was hilarious watching an enormous dog rummaging through toys, like a little child in a toy store at Christmas time. Most dogs prefer to be outside, away from their confining kennel. Not Robbie! Even after only a short walk, he couldn’t wait to return to his kennel and the cache of toys he had stashed away. Since the shelter was putting together a Calendar containing photos of rescued animals with first responders, there was no question that Robbie should grace one of its pages. And during that photo shoot, it was love at first sight. Joshua Erskine of the Hinckley Fire and Rescue was captivated by this massive, gentle dog. Joshua made him part of his family, and changed his name to Tank, for obvious reasons. Recently Tank’s pet dad told me his fur child is a wonderful dog who loves children, enjoys catching balls, and slobbers. I’m sure Tank gets plenty of belly rubs from his new family, and I don’t think they mind his slobbering. Considering all that he’s been through, they must realize he’s happy, well adjusted, very, very loving, and such a softie. Medina County SPCA 245 S. We asked Levi before he packed up his toys and headed off to his new home what he will miss most about MCSPCA and he barked, “The Volunteers!” Congratulations, Levi! We will all miss your spunky style. PuppyLOVE Deisel Deisel’s new owner writes, “Diesel is doing wonderfully in his new forever home. He has adjusted well to his new diet of IAMS Naturalistic puppy food, and is always ready for meal time! We have already had our first two puppy classes at Medina Petsmart, with four left to go. He is a very smart guy, and is doing well so far. Our biggest issue that we are continuing to deal with is sharp puppy teeth, so he has a large variety of toys to chew on. As expected, potty training has good days and bad days, but is generally doing well. Diesel is always on the move (it is hard to get his picture unless he is sleeping). He does love to cuddle, and has recently discovered his new favorite place to rest in a large papasan chair. He loves being outside so he can keep an eye on the yard. Overall, Diesel is a great guy and we are so happy to have him as part of our family. We are grateful for the Medina County SPCA and the work that it does to find pets like Diesel good homes.” Enjoy a great life Deisel! Levi, we are so happy for you! Non-golfers arrived later to take part in the Chinese auction and enjoy the after-golf steak dinner prepared by Chad Gibson and his Deer Pass team. Between the proceeds of the day and subsequent donations received, a total of $1.368.00 was netted for the Capital Campaign as a result of the event. Many thanks to Denise Heroux, owner of Awesome Paws Pet Salon and Radhika Pathak, a student from the Medina County Career Center, whose combined efforts made the outing a real success. They are a Border Collie mix, and everyone at the shelter called them “the girls.” Nicci discovered them at the MCSPCA where she accompanied her babysitter who adopted Captain, a beautiful older puppy. Coming home, Nicci couldn’t get them out of her mind. Belle and Vy probably didn’t take her seriously because since last March, they had seen many humans come and go, but no one was willing or able to take home two good-sized, bonded females. Perhaps if the girls were able to tell the sad story of their past existence, someone would have adopted them sooner, but it’s just as well, for now they are living sparkling, I happy days with humans who treat them as cherished family members. No longer do they remember their lives spent in a filthy, cold chicken coop of an animal hoarder’s premises. Now their days are filled with fun and play in the company of Andrew and Elliott, Nicci’s two sons and their two cats. Belle and Vy have become permanent fixtures at the boys’ soccer practices. When Andrew and Elliott are practicing, Nicci takes the girls for walks on the hiking trails. Belle still freaks out a bit when she passes a biker or hears a strange noise. And they both are still a little shy. But like one of those slow-motion photo sequences in which a rose unravels from a bud, they are blossoming, revealing layers of sweetness and gratitude to their adopted family.
