During the game student-athletes went around the stadium to fans viewing the game and asked them to donate available funds. With their efforts along with ticket sales during the game, the athletic department was able to raise over one thousand dollars for those in need. Make a Difference Day On Saturday, October 15, 2005 - a national day of helping others named Make A Difference Day - Iona College student-athletes came together with other members of the Iona College community and sprung into action. Volunteers assembled early in the morning at Spellman Hall to meet with M.A.D.D. site leaders and to receive final instructions about the location where they would be working. Groups were sent to numerous locations within the Westchester and New York City areas. Teams worked with New Rochelle Parks and Recreation to help restore our local ecosystem and other teams worked with Habitat for Humanity assisting with construction activities. Other groups worked within the New Rochelle YMCA creating recreational activities for adolescents while other teams assisted children with disabilities in NYC play outside. These are just a few of the many activities that took place that the Iona College community was involved. S.A.A.C. Thanksgiving On Monday, November 21, 2005, the Iona College Athletic Department presented 22 food baskets for local families for Thanksgiving dinner. Each athletic program was responsible for providing for one family while the football team accommodated for four seperate ones. The baskets, all of which incorporated the Thanksgiving theme, included items such as pie, stuffing, canned vegetables, and even turkeys. In addition, many student-athletes attended the Thanksgiving Services held in La Penta Student Union and enjoyed a blessing service led by Student Minister Dan Potocki and a song by the Iona gospel choir. This service project, which was organized in conjunction with Iona’s Campus Ministries, was the second time the department was able to be apart of this wonderful event, which proved to be a remarkable accomplishment for all involved. 19 GAELS IN THE COMMUNITY Christmas Toy Drive at Sound Shore On Wednesday, December 7, 2005, members of the Iona College football team participated in a Toy Drive and Community Christmas Party at Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle. For the third year in a row, the football team contributed to this event. Team members helped in many ways to make the experience an enjoyable and memorable one for youngsters and their families from the local community. During the afternoon, members of the squad became a part of Santa’s team as stand in Elves. They helped pass out presents, took pictures of families with Santa Claus, handed out juice and cookies, and passed out cool shades for all the children as they left the event. The event brought smiles to the faces of hundreds of children and the honorary elves on a winter afternoon. MAAC Gives Back On February 17, 2006 Iona College had members f rom the women’s basketball and track teams speak with the students at elementary school P.S. 127 in the Bronx. The athletes spoke to the students about the importance of an education and keeping active in sports. The MAAC celebrated its 12th year of coordinating the MAAC Gives Back community outreach program. The program’s intent is to give back to the communities by motivating and exciting children about MAAC sports. Student-athletes across the conference had the opportunity to spend time with local elementary school students each semester. The visits allow the students to come face-to-face will outstanding role models, and the student-athletes to spread their message of stay in school, eat right, exercise, and have fun with sports! MAAC gives back is a wonderful program that Iona College is proud to be apart of. Military Care Package Drive From February 23 to April 18, 2006, Iona College student-athletes worked together on a community service project. Inspired by the efforts of the non-profit group America Supporting Americans (ASA), the department joined in the effort to provide care packages to soldiers in Iraq. Many members of the Iona family have close personal ties to someone in the armed forces, making this project especially important. The effort was spearheaded by S.A.A.C. over a three month period during which money was raised and goods were collected. Student-athletes gathered donations at basketball games, on-campus events, and in the dorms to put the project in motion. Other on-campus groups were solicited to help as well to put together the care packages, which were sent to Delta Company / 1-502 IN/2 Brigade Combat Team 101st Airborne. 20 GAELS IN THE COMMUNITY Wheelchair Basketball with the Gaels On Thursday, April 18, 2006, the MAAC Champion Iona College men’s basketball team participated in a wheelchair basketball game against the United Spinal Association Nets. The event, sponsored by the Delta Upsilon fraternity, was held in the Hynes Center and raised over $600 through donations and raffles held that evening. The money that was raised will go to support the research and various programs of the United Spinal Association. The United Spinal Association is an organization founded in 1946 by veterans with spinal cord injuries to help enable members, as well as others with disabilities, to lead full and productive lives. For more information please visit www.unitedspinal.org. Volleyball/Water Polo Battle of the Sexes On Monday, May 1, 2006 the Iona College volleyball and men’s water polo teams came together to assist in the fight against breast cancer. In a contest held at the Hynes Athletics Center the two varsity programs played a three-game match to raise money for breast cancer research. With over 250 fans in attendance to watch this battle of the sexes, the event raised over $1,100 in the course of the evening. Members of both teams worked at an information/donation table during the afternoon of the event to raise awareness around campus. It turned out to be a major factor in having the attendance numbers and the final donation amount that was reached. The event creators, Katie Brilla and Chris Vidale, helped pull their teammates and Iona community together. The 2005-06 Student-Athlete Advisory Comittee 21 HYNES ATHLETICS CENTER Iona College Director of Athletics Patrick Lyons announced the official opening of the new Hynes Athletics Center on January 23, 2006, a brand new facility on the campus of Iona College. “We are extremely excited and appreciative for the generosity of Jim and Ann Marie Hynes to be able to create this premier athletic and recreation facility in the Northeast,” said Lyons. The Hynes Center will be the home of the new Intramural and Wellness Program at Iona College. It houses state of the art weight and cardio equipment, selectorized equipment, a core studio, multi-purpose courts, and a running track. The following is a description of some of the features of the new Athletics Center: Multi-Purpose Courts The Hynes Athletics Center’s 7800 sq. ft. state-of-the art multi-purpose courts features two courts and one NCAA Regulation size basketball court within. The courts will also be able to facilitate volleyball. A running track surrounds the gymnasium area. Aerobics Studio The aerobics studio, will provide the space for students to participate in aerobics and/or dance classes – space that has been previously unavailable. It will also provide the Iona Gaels Cheerleaders and Dance Team a convenient place to practice their routines. This open space can be easily converted into an area for pre-game events, convocations, special academic and student events, receptions and Goal Club functions. Core Studio Physio-balls, yoga mats, light weights, step-ups and other equipment for the improved Wellness Program at Iona College will be housed in the Core Studio on the second floor. This is another space that has been previously unavailable and will tremendously benefit the college community. Free-Weight Center A new free-weight center will enable all students to achieve their physical best without time constraints. The spacious layout of the new Hynes Athletics Center includes many pieces of new equipment. Regardless of the exercise or area of training that is being done, any individual can feel welcome to engage and maximize a work out in a short period of time and in a productive environment. Cardiovascular Center The 2,800 sq. ft cardiovascular center overlooks the Mazzella Field quadrangle. The cardiovascular center includes treadmills, elliptical cross trainers, bicycles, stair-masters and other exercise equipment. Rowing Tank This training facility, located on the ground floor of the Hynes Athletics Center, will house Iona’s first rowing tank. The rowing tanks mimic the current of a river so a crew team can train in simulated conditions. Rowing tanks were designed and constructed for off- season rowing, muscle-specific conditioning and technique training. This will be especially useful during the winter months when rowing in the New Rochelle Marina is not an option. 22 HYNES ATHLETICS CENTER New Offices Creating additional office space in the new Hynes Athletics Center for coaches and their staff will allow for better recruiting strategies. The new Hynes Athletics Center will inevitably attract more qualified student athletes from all areas and not just the Northeast. Having the appropriate space to meet and spend time with prospective athletic students and their parents will be a necessity for Iona’s coaches. Additional Amenities Locker room facilities for the Iona College community that use the Hynes Center are available on the ground floor. A multi-functional activity lounge replete with a 60" flat screen TV, couches and vending machine will provide a vibrant, gathering place for Iona student residents and give them another great reason to live on an active campus. The Hynes Athletics Center, made possible through the tremendous generosity of James and Anne Marie Hynes, is part of Iona’s Vision Into Reality Capital Campaign, which closed in January 2005 at over $82.6 million. The campaign also funded the Iona College Arts Center (opened in October 2000), renovations of the science building and the former Mulcahy Campus Events Center (now part of the Hynes Center), a new main entrance, an endowment for more than 23 scholarship funds and the Robert V. LaPenta ’67, ’00H Student Union (opened in August 2005). The College recently embarked on a new campaign, Visions of Excellence, to expand and renovate Ryan Library, in addition to constructing a new façade for the building. These facilities will immeasurably enhance Iona’s fast-growing reputation. 23 JUDGE STUDENT-ATHLETE ACADEMIC CENTER When Iona’s student-athletes returned to campus for the 2006 spring semester, there was and excitement about the new on-campus academic facility designed just for them. The Judge Student-Athlete Academic Center, located in the Hynes Athletic Center, was built to aid Iona’s student-athletes in all facets of their academic pursuits. The academic center, which is the first of its kind at Iona College, provides vital resources and necessary tools to assist Iona student-athletes in achieving academic success and reaching their full potential in the classroom. Included in the new academic center are tutoring facilities, an academic study area, a computer lab and an administrative office. Through a collaborative effort, Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Services Jamie Fogarty, Assistant Athletic Director for Academics Nigel Roberts, and Assistant Director of Compliance & Academics Justin Williams will be responsible for monitoring all programs and activities in the new academic center. Iona’s student-athletes, who compiled an impressive cumulative grade-point average of 3.1 in the most recent academic semester, will be able to take full advantage of all the amenities the center has to offer. While providing a positive environment and promoting academic success, the Judge Student- Athlete Academic Center will adequately meet the needs of over 400 Iona student-athletes. The academic center is focused on helping student-athletes develop life skills, stretch their intellect, become well educated, and complete their degree program “In this new era for the Iona College Athletics Program, we remain committed to providing the best setting for our student-athletes, both academically and athletically,” said Patrick Lyons, Iona’s Director of Athletics. “We are thrilled to have the ability to provide student-athletes with a top-notch facility and resources to assist them during their academic career at Iona College.” “Having the Judge Student-Athlete Academic Center situated in our primary athletic building goes a long way toward achieving our student-athlete centered vision. Iona’s student-athletes are already achieving at an exceptional rate and the new center will only help improve our academic performance,” Lyons added. Iona coaching staff members stressed the importance of the Judge Student-Athlete Academic Center on campus. “This is an exciting new facility right in line with Iona College’s commitment to producing the finest student-athletes in the nation,” said head track coach Mick Byrne. “It’s also a very comforting feeling for our student-athletes knowing that they have one place designated specifically to help them,” added Byrne. It is clearly evident that the new academic center is now an integral part of our student-athlete’s routine. On behalf of Iona Athletics, we thank John ’71 & Monica ’70 Judge for their generosity that made the academic center possible. 24 SELECTION SUNDAY On Sunday, March 12, 2006, the Iona College Athletic Department hosted a NCAA Selection Show Party in the Mulcahy Gymnasium at the Hynes Athletics Center to celebrate the Men’s Basketball Team earning a bid to the 2006 NCAA Championship.
