Carolina Beaufort
First, I want to thank Heritage Classic Foundation/Verizon Foundation for their gracious support
for this event. I thank all SharkBytes committee members, which include Drs. Brian Canada,
Xuwei Liang, and Kasia Pawlek, for their hard work. I thank our Chancellor Dr. Jane Upshaw,
EVCAA Dr. Harvey Varnet, and Director of Public Safety Henry Garbade for their strong support.
I also thank our student leaders for giving their time to work for the event. These student
leaders include: Josselyn Campos, Samia Durborow, William Glesias, Kristen Harrison, John
Hollingsworth, Matthew Hoover, Jeremy Mildish, Joshua Powell, Steven Vega, and Shane
Worrell.
Student Participants
Sharkbytes attracted more than 105 middle and high school students from the LowCountry
region that USCB primarily serves, which includes the four counties in SC (Beaufort, Jasper,
Colleton, and Hampton) and the neighboring Savannah areas in GA. Among those registered
students, total 80 students attended the SharkBytes event.

Figures 1-3 give the detailed information about student grade levels, participation
percentages in counties, and race distribution. It can be seen that SharkBytes successfully
involved considerable amount of middle school students (6-8 grades, 62%). The category

“other” in Figure 1 includes several 5th grade students from Beaufort Academy and several
students with undisclosed grade levels. Participated students followed similar a population
distribution pattern for the four counties in LowCountry (Figure 2). In addition, SharkBytes had
a very good participation from all race groups, according to Figure 3, 39% of them were white,
more than 39% belonged to minority groups (African Americans, were Hispanics, or others),
and 22% declared multiracial.

Student Experience
Students have expressed extremely positive experience with SharkBytes. For example, more
than 86% of students have (strongly) agreed that the SharkBytes helped them to improve
awareness of Computational Science program at USCB (Figure 4); 84% of them rated the overall
quality of SharkBytes high or highest (Figure 5); and 85% of them stated that they will share
their SharkBytes experience with their parents and friends (Figure 6).

In addition to quantitative survey questions, participated students have also told us, in written,
their experience and possible ways to improve for the future. In this section, we will include
them here.
It was great just more fun.
It was school but 1000000 times funner! Improvement: make a recess.
Today I've learned how to become a better engineer, ect.
I had fun today and you should add more games.
Give more time for apps and explain more.
Today was fun and exciting. On the sounds lab, add more hands on activities.
Today I had an awesome job here discovering more about what to expect when I prepare for college. I
have decided to apply for USCB when I reach 11th Grade.

If you can specify two groups, like you did this event, but make it more evident before we start I

way it could be improved is if the design contest was explained slower and give more time. For the
Zombie one is if we could actually play a game by flicking candy around.
My experience today was quite swell. The overall event was pretty cool, but I believe that next time,
there needs to be more teachers at the event.

SharkBytes is a one-day interactive campus visitation event to showcase STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, research, and degree programs at University
of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB)
Key program objectives:
 To promote the understanding of STEM and stimulate interest in STEM majors at USCB
 To encourage improved academic achievement among students in South Carolina
 To help ensure a sustainable employment outlook for USCB STEM graduates
Target
audience
Annually, the program expects to register 100 middle & high school students from the South Carolina
Lowcountry region served by USCB, including Beaufort, Jasper, Colleton, and Hampton Counties

Following a brief welcome reception, the participants will be split up into groups of 15-20 students
that will rotate through the following programmed activities:

All participants will receive lunch, refreshments, and a souvenir imprinted with the logos of the
Heritage Classic Foundation and Verizon Foundation. App design contest winners will get to keep the
mobile devices used during development, with additional prizes to be awarded for honorable mention.
Include student feedback survey and student performance review. Evaluation will also track the postevent progress of student participants, such as choice of college/major and future employment

Dear Teachers, Guidance Counselors, and Principals:
The Computational Science program at the University of South Carolina Beaufort is seeking nominations for highly motivated
students to participate in SharkBytes, a free, one-day STEM outreach event to be held at USCB's Bluffton campus on Saturday,
March 16, 2013.
More specifically, we are looking to invite as many as 100 middle and high school students from throughout the four-county
Lowcountry region (Beaufort, Jasper, Colleton, and Hampton) that USCB primarily serves. Students who are selected to
participate in SharkBytes will get much more than the usual campus tour. Instead, they'll be getting an exclusive, hands-on “sneak
peek” at some of the most exciting research projects that USCB students and faculty in the STEM disciplines are working on.
In addition to play-testing some of our latest innovations, participants will get a chance to speak with professors and current
students to learn not just about what STEM is and how it impacts society, but also to see how they won't have to venture too far
from home to get a high-quality, highly-individualized, and low-cost STEM education at USCB. In fact, USCB is just one of a
handful of U.S. colleges that have an undergraduate degree program in Computational Science, which is already training the next
generation of knowledge workers for the tech jobs of the future, many of which will require expertise in high-performance
computing and data science. Typically you'd have to go to grad school to obtain such skills—but why put in all that extra time?
Students can get a jump on technology's future right here, right now, at USCB!
But the excitement doesn't stop there! Beyond the “show & tell” and “meet & greet” activities we have planned, all student
participants will have an opportunity to compete for valuable prizes like a Google Nexus 7 tablet (valued at $199) by showing off
their creative skills in a mobile app design contest. No programming knowledge is necessary or assumed—we'll be providing all
the tools the participants will need. All the students need to bring is their creativity as well as an eagerness to learn and have fun!
Plus, no one will walk away from the event empty-handed. Every student who participates will get free lunch and refreshments
throughout the day, along with a high-quality SharkBytes souvenir T-shirt and other giveaways. And since funding for SharkBytes
has been graciously provided by the Heritage Classic Foundation in partnership with the Verizon Foundation, there's absolutely
no charge for students to participate!
Of course, SharkBytes can't be successful without any students to take advantage of it—that's where you come in! We need your
help in nominating students who you think could benefit from an outreach event like this. We want these students to feel like
they're part of something truly special and exclusive, and we want to invite nominated students to SharkBytes on an individual
basis if at all possible. So, with the permission of your school's principal, one of us from USCB will be visiting your school in the
coming days to distribute several “invitation packages,” which you can use to invite the students personally—but we'll leave it up
to you to decide how and when to distribute the packets. Each package contains a formal invitation letter, a letter-size SharkBytes
poster (a PDF copy is attached for your reference), as well as a “parent info packet” that includes a couple of release forms to
help ensure students' safety at the event. In their letters, your students will find unique invite codes to “redeem” online for access
to SharkBytes at http://www.uscb.edu/sharkbytes. (We're hoping it'll be a lot like getting invited to a “private beta” version of a
new website or social network—remember ten years ago how cool it was to get an invitation to Gmail?).
If you run out of packets – then not to worry! Encourage your students to go ahead and visit the above site anyway (we will
provide some informational flyers that you can hand out as well), and those students who sign up without codes will be placed
on a "waiting list." For now, we plan to give preference to students who redeem invite codes first, but at some point we'll pull
students from the waiting list as well. If possible, encourage all of your students—with or without invite codes—to sign up no

later than Friday, March 1, 2013. As an incentive for doing so, please tell them that by doing so, they will get a free SharkBytes Tshirt in their preferred size.

Dear Parent,
Congratulations! Your child has been invited to participate in SharkBytes, a free, one-day event of
activities to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education here in
the four-county Lowcountry region (Beaufort, Jasper, Colleton, and Hampton). SharkBytes will be
held at USCB's Bluffton campus on Saturday, March 16, 2013 from 8:30AM to 4:30PM.

For your child, registration is as simple as redeeming the access code that was provided in his or her
invitation letter, followed by completing a short online form that should take no more than a few
minutes. Please encourage your child to sign up for the event as soon as possible — ideally, we'd like
to hear from everyone by this Friday, March 1st, 2013, so that we can guarantee that all invited
students will receive a SharkBytes T-shirt in their preferred size.
For you, as the child's parent or guardian, we have enclosed two forms for you to complete before
we can permit your child to participate in SharkBytes:

As much as we hate to burden anyone with paperwork, we do hope that completing & returning
these forms helps to assure you that USCB takes your child's safety and well-being very seriously, and
we will do everything we can to accommodate all students, including those with disabilities and
other special needs.
Please fill out the forms as completely as you can. Any third party can act as a witness — notarization
is not required. As long as we have your completed forms in hand prior to the start of the event, you
can return the form to us in either of two ways:

desk (located in the Hargray Building on the USCB Bluffton campus) on the morning of the
event — 8:30AM, Saturday, March 16th, 2013.

In consideration of my Child, the Participant, being permitted to participate in the above Program, I, and on behalf of my Child, agree and understand

 My Child will abide by all the rules, guidelines, regulations, and code of conduct of USC and/or host/site location requirements;
 My Child may be asked to leave the Program if I or my Child do not abide by the rules, regulations, and code of conduct of USC and/or the host site

 Give the Program staff the permission, in case of accident or injury, to administer standard First Aid/or to arrange for transportation to a medical
facility;
 Be solely and completely liable for any expenses incurred on my or my Child's behalf, including, but not limited to, medical or health care expenses;
 Advise the USC Program staff and/or host site administrators of any situation or condition that may be a potential hazard or risk.
