By the time Marc Sommerfeld graduated from
Wayne State College in Nebraska in 1970, he was already on a
path that would lead him to become one of America’s foremost
cabinetmaking authorities.
Educating others becomes Marc’s passion
It all began in 1971 with a 17-year career as industrial arts
instructor and basketball coach at Iowa’s Remsen-Union High
School, where Marc perfected his easy-going, credible teaching
style. In 1983, he launched a special woodworking program through
which students designed and built grandfather clocks for their
families…a program that eventually created heavy demand for an
adult education class that Marc taught in the evenings.
Teaching prompts outside-the-box innovation
Soon, his spare-time cabinetmaking for friends was growing so

The first thing to do is assemble the top,
and the three aluminum extrusions are
bolted together, the piece with the hole
in it going in the middle. The extrusions
have a tapered, tongue and groove
edge that makes sure that the pieces
fit together perfectly and entirely flush
on the top. Three bolts hold each piece
to the next one and you need to make
sure the ends are flush when you tighten
up the bolts, as the fence end pieces will
not fit well otherwise. The fence end
track brackets are next to fit, and they
are bolted from beneath, utilizing the
t-slots in the underside of the table top.
The fence end tracks are bolted to the end
brackets and provide a t-slot for the fence
to run in, and tighten to.
It is recommended in the instruction
manual that at this stage you make a
plywood sub base for the top. This is not
to give strength but to form a transition
to build the cabinet base on to. This
plywood base will also be the correct size
so you can position the router table top
next to the top of a standard table saw,
which will then be its base. The plans
recommend that you use a tongue and
groove construction technique for the
plywood base, which I agree with for ease
and strength.
The fence is next to fit, and this is yet
another substantial extrusion, literally
bristling with t-slots. Bolts fit into the
t-slots of the fence end tracks and pass
up through holes in the fence, to which
good-sized knobs fit on to. They provide
plenty of locking power and I didn't find
that the fence was even tempted to move
when locked. There is an option to use a
'pivot mode' and this is where one side of
the fence has a pin that passes through
it to a hole in the top and the other side
of the fence is locked in the usual way.
As the fence only pivots, this makes for
quicker cutting depth adjustments. The
black HDPE faces are attached to the
fence with bolts that are accessed from
the front, so no reaching over to the back

CONsTRUCTION
This system is almost exclusively made from gold anodized
aluminum extrusions that make up the router table top as well
as the fence, and you soon notice that they are of top quality and
precisely flat. The top pieces feature t-tracks either side to give a
wide range of options for the positioning of miter slides and feather
boards. When assembled, the top is 36” by 27” and the fence is
48” long, which will give you plenty of run on and run off that is
unusual for a router table. Also supplied are all the fixtures and
fittings that you need to assemble the unit, including the tools,
to make lateral adjustments. Slipperyfaced adhesive tape goes between the
faces and the fence to make them slide
easily. There are zero clearance inserts
that go between the faces, locating in
beveled ends, so you can run any required
bit into them and cut exactly the profile of
HDPE faces for the fence, three zero
clearance inserts, a pivot pin, a dust port,
three insert rings, an instructional DVD
and plans to make the cabinet.

t is always good to try out a new woodworking tool even when
you think you have seen it all. There are a lot of router tables
out there and it is sometimes difficult to set one apart from
another, and many of them look like they have come off the
same production line, just with a different badge. This one from
Sommerfeld Tools is different right from the start, as you would
think it just isn't possible to fit a router table top of 36” x 27” in
that long, thin box. When you unpack it and make the obligatory
inspection of the parts the reason soon becomes obvious. The top
is made up of a series of three 36” long by 9” wide aluminum
extrusions that bolt together, and there are no legs, you build a
supporting cabinet with the supplied plans. This is a novel approach
for a router table, and I did wonder if this was a good idea, as the
table needs to be perfectly flat to ensure precision cutting.

The fence faces are easily adjusted and
there are three table insert options
the bit giving…zero clearance.
A nice dust extractor port fitting slides
into slots on the back of the fence, and
as it is tight fitting it is tapped into place
in the center of the fence, where it won't
move. The port is stepped so you can
cut it at the size that matches your
extractor pipe.
The last thing to do is to attach your
router, the top is pre-drilled for mounting
Triton and most Porter Cable routers but
it doesn't look like it would be difficult to
drill to fit any router you have. You have
the choice of three insert rings to go in
the top to fit tight to the router bit you
are using.
That is pretty much assembly complete
if you plan to use it by the side of your
table saw. However, you will find it is
a much better experience if you make
the 10-drawer cabinet base, which
is recommended, and you will find
comprehensive instructions on how to
make it on the supplied DVD.
CabINeT
Making the cabinet base is relatively
straightforward and you will find cutting
lists, tools required lists and step-bystep instructions in the manual, and as
I mentioned earlier the DVD covers its
construction well too. I won't go into
much detail here as it is standard cabinet
construction, and you can see from the
illustration what is involved. It does look
fantastic, and is extremely useful when it
is made, but there is a considerable time
and material commitment involved.

same law of router bit insertion:
Insert the bit until it bottoms-out
in the collet seat – then retract it
1/16” to 1/8” before tightening.
Here’s why. Although the insides of collets
are straight to accept the shanks of your
bits, when collet nuts are tightened, it’s the
tapered outside surface that causes the
collet opening to close tightly around the
bit as it’s drawn down into the seat.
If the bit is already in contact with the collet
seat when you tighten the nut, its shank
won’t allow the collet to be pulled fully into
the seat. Not tight. Perhaps not precisely
straight. Certainly not a good thing.

Set-up consistency

This System is clearly DIFFERENT
The Table is shipped as three “9” W x 36” L, extrusions that you join
together with precision aluminum tongue & groove joints and six bolts.
The entire process takes less than an hour…plus the small amount of time
it requires to attach your router base to the tabletop (practically zero with
our Triton routers).
Once assembled, chances are, you’ll be awe-struck by its giant size,
handsome gold-anodized finish and how easy it is to use. Set the 19 lb.
Fence on the Table surface. Slide the hex head of the Fence Tightening
Knob bolt into the left side T-slot…maneuver the opposite end of the
Fence a bit until the spring-loaded Pivot Pin pops into its hole…and
you’re just about ready.
Install a bit and adjust its height. If your task calls for using a piloted bit,
swing the fence in or out and use a straightedge to align the O.D. of your
