EXHIBIT OF RAFFLE QUILTS Guilds from near and far will display their raffle quilts in the Conference Atrium. Pick your favorite and take a chance. The fantastic array of Raffle Quilts is a quilt show all on it’s own! SCHEDULE OF EXHIBIT AND SPECIAL EVENTS 2015 INVITATIONAL EXHIBIT: The Seacoast Modern Quilt Guild seeks to serve northern MA, southern NH and southern ME. This Special Exhibit is an invitation to come and share their love of modern quilting! This show is not "juried". Three experts from the national Modern Quilt Guild—Alissa Haight Carlton, Jen Carlton-‐Bailly, and Heather Grant—have participated in evaluating which quilts are “modern”. This exhibit will feature quilts highlighting many aspects of modern quilting, including improvisation, use of solids, alternate gridwork, and utility. This exhibit is an exciting opportunity to cross-‐educate the modern and traditional quilters, and they hope to "Tell Our Story" with each quilt. Challenge Mini Quilts The Challenge Mini Quilts are a demonstration of the Seacoast Modern Quilt Guild’s challenge to design mini modern quilts using a traditional block. All quilts had to measure either 18” x 18” OR 22” x 22” square The quilts must be a reinterpretation of a traditional block They must be made from solids only, no prints The quilt must be quilted (hand or machine) and bound All techniques acceptable: improvisational piecing, traditional piecing, paper piecing, applique etc. Modern Quilt Exhibition Each member of the Seacoast Modern Quilt Guild has been invited to share up to two quilts in this exhibit. Each quilt selected for this exhibit will demonstrate one or more aspect of modern quilting. Sections of the exhibit will include quilts featuring improvisational piecing, bold colors and prints, expansive negative space, and alternate gridwork. You won’t see immaculate “for show only” quilts in this exhibit— many of the quilts have been washed, used, and loved! Each quilter is asked to write a brief statement telling the story of each quilt; you’ll learn of the quilt’s purpose, inspiration behind it, and more about the process of each quilt. Raffle Quilt The Seacoast Modern Quilt Guild is pleased to present a raffle quilt at A Quilters Gathering. The raffle quilt was made using Amy Friend of During Quiet Time’s “Kite Tails” quilt pattern. There will be a rotating schedule of volunteers from the guild staffing the exhibit and raffle table to share their work with you! EXHIBIT OF QUILT CONTEST ENTRIES IMPROV Quilts that make us think outside the box, stun us and make us ponder Improv intends to do something without preparation. Some of the most remarkable quilts have been made from mix-‐ups, mess-‐ups or unintentional techniques. IMPROV shall inspire quilters to create and enter a quilt that will be made from this very idea. From Classic to Modern, Traditional to Contemporary these same elements form Quilting and define a quilter. Quilters are designers and are always seeking that new viewpoint. Quilters Improvisational ideas shall be interpreted in the quilt. In this contest we call for quilts that will make us think outside the box, stun us and make us ponder about the Quilters improvisational vision. Read the teacher profiles, study their workshop descriptions, see examples of each one's work, and you will agree that, as a group, they offer a broad range of awesome experience in the making of quilts, from the basics of fine craftsmanship to the fine art of creativity. In bringing together such a select group of talent for 2015, Eastcoast Quilters Alliance 3, LLC meets its goal of moving forward, in this 27th year of A Quilters Gathering, with teachers who not only define what is happening right now in quilting, but who also answer questions often asked by quilters such as, “what are the next steps in quilting?” and, “what will quilting be like in the future?” In November, quilters taking classes at the Gathering will learn the “next steps” in quilting, and discover that the “future of quilting” is already happening. The focus of classes in 2015, as you will see in the following pages, is not on any particular quilting style, method, or technique, nor is the work strictly traditional, contemporary, artistic, or modern. Of course, these factors will not be ignored or neglected: they are, and always will be, part of the quilting process. But quilting has evolved over these past 40 years, and will continue to do so, and fortunately for us, teachers have kept up with the changers and even been responsible for many of them. And so it was decided that this year would focus on creating an environment of excitement by offering classes with extraordinary teachers who will show them how to make the “next steps” that will take their quilt into the 21st Century. Meet Our Teachers Amy Friend – Massachusetts http://duringquiettime.com/about When I was a little girl, I said I wanted to grow up to be a mommy and an artist. I’d like to think that I am just that! I am the mother to three young children. Previously, I studied art history and worked as a museum collections curator. I made the choice to say home with my children when my second child was born. I now express my creative side through sewing and pattern design. Early on, I found time for this “during quiet time” when the kids were napping or at least enjoying some quiet in their rooms. Nowadays, I sew while they are at school. I love varying the style of my quilts but generally lean toward modern quilting. My real passion is paper piecing. I love everything from the design process through fabric selection and sewing. I have patterns for sale on my site. I also have published patterns in magazines and books. I also have plenty of free tutorials to inspire you. I have my BA in Art/Art History from Bates College and completed my MA course work in Art History at the University of Delaware. I worked as a collections curator of fine arts collections prior to saying home with my three children ages 2, 6 and 9. If I am not busy taking care of my family or sewing, you might find me gardening! ~ Classes By Amy ~ AF1 -‐ Thursday, November 5 – Ombre Vibes (9-‐12/2-‐5) AF2 -‐ Friday, November 6 – Twinkle (9-‐12/2-‐5) AF3 -‐ Saturday, November 7 -‐ Spinning Wheel (9-‐12/2-‐5) AFL -‐ Saturday, November 7 – Trunk Show (12:30 Lunch Lecture) Weeks Ringle – Illinois https://www.modernquiltstudio.com Weeks Ringle is a professional quiltmaker and co-‐founder of Modern Quilt Studio, a design studio in Oak Park, Illinois. She also serves on the SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates) board of directors. Carol has won six “Best of Show” awards in her career…with six different quilts! She won another Best of Show in 2004 when her quilt, “Tapestry”, won at the Anderson Arts Center in Kenosha, Wisconsin. In 2003, her quilt, “Interwoven”, won her 3rd Best of Show at Quilts=Art=Quilts in NY and her original Best of Show was for “Glimpse of the Grotto” at the show, Made in NY 1999. Her quilt, “Cymbalism”, was one of fifteen selected for the Museum of American Folk Art’s exhibition, which toured from 2001-‐2003. Carol has also won a myriad of awards at quilt shows, including an amazing 33 major prizes in 2006-‐2008, and 39 in 2004 & 2005. This includes a number of first prizes and awards for the Best Wall Quilt, Best Use of Color, Best Embellishment, and Best Threadwork at the American Quilters’ Society in Paducah KY, the International Quilt Association in Houston, TX, and many other gallery shows. A teacher by degree, & outgoing by nature, she has been a sales recruiter "headhunter” for 22 years but closed her business in October 2003 to teach quilting internationally. Her 14 workshops are said to be “fun, motivational, & non-‐ threatening.” Carol delights in using hand-‐dyed fabrics in her abstract, motif-‐driven designs, accented by the use of value. Her art quilts grace the walls of hospitals & businesses as well as many private collectors. Gallery inquiries, & exhibition opportunities are welcomed. Quilting started as a hobby, but turned into a passion and a business. I now teach nationally and internationally, host “Quilting Arts TV,” and have produced numerous patterns, two books, and four workshops on DVD. I have won seven Best of Show awards at three different quilting guilds, with six different quilts. My work has been featured in several national magazines. My first series of six lessons on thread sketching ran in Quilting Arts magazine throughout 2010, and the second series ran in Quilting Arts magazine in 2014. I tackled my first quilt on my own and made every mistake in the book!! I enjoyed machine piecing for a long time until I got the taste for needle-‐turn appliqué. I started out making quilts using patterns produced by others and eventually decided to try my hand at making my own – for myself. Annette Blake, from Fragrant Cottage saw this quilt and asked if I’d teach it. Since then I’ve found that there are so many quilts “in my head” that need to come out that I don’t have time for anything else but designing and making class samples. Now if only I could give up my day job! I mostly teach needle-‐turn appliqué, reverse appliqué, the use of glue – NO pins, and preparing and making hexagons. I encourage quilters to prepare a complete block so that it is portable and can be completed anywhere, any time. One of the main things I found when teaching is that people can be very hesitant about choosing fabric. I enjoy this aspect of my designing and try and instill confidence in my students about choosing color – and particularly NOT stressing out with this process. I like to think of my classes as “sit and sew” sessions – or “mini quilt-‐ins” – where we have a fun and relaxing day, chatting to friends as well as learning a new technique or perfecting on techniques. ~ Classes By Irene ~ IB1 -‐ Thursday, November 5 – Melon Lime and Bitters (9-‐12/2-‐5) IB2 -‐ Friday, November 6 – Eva Grace (9-‐12/2-‐5) IB3 -‐ Saturday, November 7 & Sunday, November 8 -‐ Confetti (9-‐ 12/2-‐5) A Quilters Gathering will be participating in NH Open Doors again this year! A Quilters’ Gathering 2015 Quilt Contest Theme: IMPROV Quilts that make us think outside the box, stun us and make us ponder Improv means to do something without preparation. Some of the most fantastic quilts have been made from mix-‐ups, mess-‐ups or unintentional techniques. Improv shall inspire quilters to create and enter a quilt that will be made from this very idea. From Classic to Modern, Traditional to Contemporary these same elements form Quilting and define a quilter. Quilters are designers and are always seeking that new viewpoint. Quilter’s Improvisational ideas shall be interpreted in the quilt. In this contest we call for quilts that will make us think outside the box, stun us and make us ponder about the Quilters improvisational vision. A Quilters’ Gathering™ Quilt Contest is a juried and judged contest open to individuals, partners, and groups. Quilts may be new or completed within the past 10 years. Selected entries will be exhibited to the public at A Quilters’ Gathering ™ from November 5-‐8, 2015. Judging by quilt professionals is done prior to the exhibit with ribbons awarded as follows: One Best of Show Ribbon is awarded. First, Second, Third, and Honorable Mention Ribbons are awarded in the categories of Quilting Excellence, Overall Craftsmanship, Reflection of Theme, Color Compatibility, and Artistic Achievement in two divisions, Hand Work and Machine Work. Additionally, a series of Special Ribbons will be presented as designated. These are Founders' Award, Judges Award, Directors' Award, and Popular Vote Award. As prizes of cash or of products become available, it will be posted on the EQA web site. Jury of Photo/Image entries is done by a highly qualified Selection Committee. Judging is done by duly certified judges who examine the actual quilts and determine winners in each category. All quilts and wall hangings in any style, size, design, and method of construction may be entered. All work submitted must have been executed totally by Entrant(s), i.e. individual, partners, or group, and must be available from October 20 to November 18, 2015. Work previously shown at A Quilters’ Gathering ™ cannot be entered again. A non-‐refundable entry fee of $20.00 per Entrant is required. This fee allows 3 different pieces to be submitted. Each submission must include photos or images – a full view and a close-‐up, and an Entry Form. Entries must be in color. Any size photo may be sent so long as it clearly depicts the quilt colors, technique, craftsmanship, quilting stitch, and other pertinent details. Photos/Images of accepted work will become the property of Eastcoast Quilters Alliance 3, LLC and may be used for publicity purposes. Only photos of non-‐accepted work will be returned. Entries must include a Self-‐Addressed-‐Stamped-‐Envelope with first class postage for mailing the Notification of Status letter and for return of slides where applicable. This letter will contain full instructions for mailing / delivering accepted entries. In the event this letter is not received within a week of the date indicated below please do not hesitate to contact Kate Sussman at [email protected] or 1-‐603-‐714-‐ 8871.
