DOI Holds 40th Annual Open House...
Diversified Opportunities held its 40th
annual open house and awards
banquet this year! Close to 250 people
attended to celebrate another
successful year of service and
dedication to the communities of
Wilson, Wayne and Greene Counties.
The annual luncheon is held to show
appreciation for the people and
organizations who have supported DOI
in its mission to prepare its trainees for
the area workforce. The event is held in
conjunction with October's observance
of National Disability Employment
Awareness Month to bring further
recognition of this important issue to the
local community.
"Each year Diversified Opportunities
works closely with many different
agencies that provide a variety of
supports and services to our trainees,"
said Clay Johnson. "These businesses
have exemplified professionalism and
dedication to our mission and for that
we would like to recognize them today
for their outstanding service and
support."
DOI would like to
congratulate
Dewey R. for
receiving the
Triumph Award in
recognition of 30
years employment
with Aramark at
Barton!
The keynote speaker was Johnny Evans, a
former N.C. State Wolfpack football
quarterback and Eastern North Carolina
Director for the Fellowship of Christian
Athletes. Evans spoke about four values,
teamwork, service, excellence and itegrity,
that have guided his life on and off the field.
Evans related how these values exemplify
and facilitate the success of DOI, its
trainees and staff.
DOI recognized several award winners for
their service and commitment to DOI.
Outgoing Board members, Hearn Walston
and Ken Jones were recognized for their
dedication. Some of the awards given were
Partners In Service, Employers of the Year,
Employee of the Year, Highest Productivity,
Triumph award and DOI's highest award,
The Sentinel award.The Sentinel award
goes to a person or group that provides
continued support and is commited to
helping the community and Diversified. The
Wilson Police Department and Rob Boyette
were the recipients of this years Sentinel
award.
Ken Powell, DOI's Vice Chairman, closed
the event by thanking all for their ongoing
support of Diversified, which served 220
trainees in Wilson, Wayne and Greene
counties over the past year. He noted that
DOI maintains partnerships with 52
regional businesses and expressed how
wonderful the organization is and how
proud he is to be a part of it. DOI thanks
this years award winners and all who
helped to make the Open House a success.
Our Mission is to provide vocational evaluation, training and placement for individuals,
age sixteen and over, with disabilities or disadvantaged circumstances so that they
might secure an optimal earned income and enhance their independence in the community.

DOI's First Honey Harvest...
We were not the only ones hard at work this year. The
bees here at DOI proved their worth with a recent harvest
of delicious golden nectar. The hives produced over 7
gallons of honey beyond what they need to get through
the winter. The DOI trainees had a great time discovering
how to process a raw product into a finished good for sale.
There were lots of questions and plenty of hands on time
throughout the extraction process. The trainees will learn
more about processing raw goods as we begin to add
value to the bees wax that came from the extraction
process. Once this is complete they will learn how to
package, label and maybe even market these products.
