married MARY AMANDA ARD 03 Apr 1854. She was born 26 Jul 1834 in Echo, Dale Co, AL, and died 17 Feb 1905 in Covington Co, AL.

From the book Covington County, AL History 1821-1976 page 268--- Woodham--Among the earliest pioneer settlers to come to this area were the Woodhams.
The Woodham clan can be traced as far back as 1709 in Europe, but for the benefit of space we will begin with the marriage of John
Wesley Woodham to Amanda Ard at Echo (now Ozark), Alabama in Dale County on April 4, 1854. The following year the newlyweds
moved from Echo and settled at a little logging camp in south central Alabama. The little community was later named Poley,
Alabama. .
Part time the Woodhams farmed for a living, producing good crops from the rich soil near the Poley Creek swamp. Their home was
built off what is now Highway 84 on the land now owned by the Opp Country Club, and until a few years ago some remnants of the
old home place could still be seen.
Fourteen children were born to this union from 1855 to 1878 and today their descendants make up a sizable part of the population
of Opp.
These original fourteen descendants are buried at either Bethel, Hickory Grove or in the Opp City cemetery.
Death claimed Mrs. Woodham on February 17, 1904. John Woodham died six years later on November 2, 1910. Both were buried at
Hickory Grove Church.

The following was sent to me by Robert Alan "Bob" Woodham, of Kingsport, Tennessee, in August of 1997. It was apparently written
by, or in the possession of, Wilma Baisden Woodham on April 27, 1972 (1905 is also written in the margin). The following statement
occurrs at the end of the 2 pages: "Courtesy of Bland Stanley." Perhaps he authored the article which appeared in the local
newspaper. A part of it appears below:
IN LOVING MEMORY OF AMANDA WOODHAM
Amanda (Ard) Woodham first saw the light of a beautiful world on July 26, 1834, near Echo, in Dale County (Alabama), being the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Ard and a grand-daughter of Judge Harper of Covington County, (Alabama).
At the beautiful dawning of womanhood aged twenty, she was happily joined in holy wedlock to John W. Woodham on the 3rd day
of April, 1854. Early in January, 1857, they moved into the wild pine woods of Covington County where they spent a happy life
together until she was called up higher. She was the mother of fifteen children, ten boys and three girls still survive, all of whom are
married, and one hundred and one grandchildren, eighty-six still living, eleven great-grandchildren, eight of them living, are the
fruits of that happy couple. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren attended the funeral.
What a throng of off-spring to follow a sainted mother to her last resting place on earth. May they all follow her Christian example
and be with her in Heaven. In early childhood, she joined the Methodist Church and devoted her life to Christian duty. She leaves a
brother, Rev. D. T. and Miss Sophronia Ard of Eufaula, Alabama, and Mrs L.F. Miller of Echo, to cherish her memory.
Rev. W.O. Self conducted the burial service at Hickory Grove Church where she was a member for many years.

Notes About Josiah and Agusta. By Ron Goodwin All folks around Babbie and Opp in Covington County knew Josiah Woodham as
"Siar" and Auusta Cobb Woodham as "Gussie" At one point in the 1920s Siar bought a model T Ford. Charles Goodwin, his son in
law, was out driving it for him one afternoon. As Charles made a right turn towards the house on a very sandy dirt road, the car
started sliding towards the ditch. Siar stood straight up yelling "breaker Charlie, breaker Charlie" and continued hollering" breaker
Charlie" until they wound up in the ditch. Neither was hurt but they had to hitch up a mule to pull the car out.
When I was about 6 years old Grandpa came to visit us In Frisco City. He and I went fishing on busey creek which was across a cow
pasture and a big cotton patch behind our house. We fished all morning and caught one scronny little catfish. While visiting us he
kept me facinated by playing tunes using a comb with a green pecan leaf. Tried to teach me, but to no avail.
According to my brother, Gussie spent a lot of time with Lois at their home in River Falls AL. before her death in the late 20s. He
remembered a trip to Montgomery with them to take her to the doctor. She died of cancer which started on her nose and moved
inside.

Notes for WILLIAM ARIS "BILL" WOODHAM: -- Obituary -At the time of William's death, an obituary appeared in the local newspaper [exact date unknown]. The title was "W.A. Woodham
Called by Death: Was Pioneer Citizen of This County." Selected text from the obituary reads as follows:
"Opp and the entire county sustained a great loss in the death of W. A. Woodham, better known to his friends throughout the state
as 'Uncle Bill'. He died on Monday night, May 28, at the age of 76, following several years of declining health.
Uncle Bill had lived a life of usefulness, having followed several different diversions of livelihood. As a young man he taught school
for several years, and since that time he has served as tax collector of Covington County and later as Justice of the Peace in Opp.
He was splendid singer, and especially was he fond of sacred harp singing. Until he became a bedridden invalid some four years ago,
he continued despite his years to teach singing lessons.
Uncle Bill had been in a critical condition several years following two strokes of paralysis, and his death, although a great sadness to
his friends and relatives, did not come unexpected. Always with a sunny disposition and a friendly greeting so characteristic of the
whole Woodham family, Uncle Bill's hospitality and loving spirit will always be cherished by those who knew him.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the First Methodist Church of Opp with the following men officiating: his pastor,
Rev. Andrew J. Jones of Hichory Grove, Rev. G.H. Shear, Rev. W.E. Fuller, pastor of the First Baptist Chruch of Opp and Rev. H.W.
Williamson, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Opp."

begins with part of a letter sent to him in reply regarding "The Jenkins Story". The letter was written by Janie
Hardage Owens and dated Feb. 19, 1996.
"I did find however, a written account from my first cousin, Rosalyn, Arnold's daughter. She wanted to write down
some "stories" for her three sons... and had talked to my Uncle Jenkins to obtain certain facts. This was called the
"Jenkins Story" and is the only one she sent to me."
THE JENKINS STORY :
"The children knew when they were growing up that they had Woodham relatives on both sides of the family. They
lived on their daddy's and mama's farm that they had homesteaded in Covington County, Alabama, about one and a
half miles south of Opp.
Their wonderful mother, Texann Rebecca, was the daughter of Robert Nelson Woodham and Susan Sara Ann
Wiggins Woodham who was her first cousin once removed; she was the daughter of her husband's first cousin.
Marrying a cousin was not uncommon in those days when there was so little travel. Neighbors often married their
neighbors and lived their whole lives close to both families. The children of Texann and Taylor laughed later and said
they were sort of "double Woodhams".
The Woodhams had come from England to Surry County, Virginia during or prior to 1655. They moved on to Dobbs
County, North Carolina, and in 1792, our ancestor, Athanasius Woodham, was born in Darlington County, South
Carolina. His sons, Aris and John Wesley, were born in South Carolina, and the family stayed there until the 1830's.
They began to migrate to southeast Alabama to Henry and Dale Counties, and our branch of the Woodham family
came on to Covington County. Aris' son, Robert Nelson Woodham, was Jenkins' maternal grandfather, and John
Wesley's son, Taylor Nelson Woodham, was Jenkins' father.
In 1857, John Wesley and Amanda Ard Woodham, who were Taylor's parents and Jenkins' paternal grandparents,
homesteaded many acres in Covington County. The county was almost unsettled in those days. He served in the Civil
War, leaving his wife and four small children in their new home. They were members of the Hickory Grove
Methodist Church which was a log cabin church a few miles west of Opp.
The children of Taylor and Texann were born in this order: Mollie, Bessie, Arnold, Excella, Emery, Eugene, Aubrey,
Jenkins, Annie Ruth, and Luther. They also had a son born between Aubrey and Jenkins who was dead at birth.
Jenkins was born Oct. 31, 1908, the eighth child. Life was hard on the farm, but there was a lot of love in their family.
Losing his still-young mother when he was only ten years old was very hard for him. She died in 1918 during an
influenza epidemic in which so many in Alabama suffered. It was during World War I, and his oldest brother, Arnold,
was in the army in France. Mollie and Bessie began to look after the younger children in their mother's absence and
even spanked them when they needed it.
Their father soon married Minnie Wiggins Griswold, and their children were Louis, Geraldine, and Martha. Jenkins
and the younger children were loved and cared for by their kind stepmother. They loved her deeply and also each
one of the new babies as they were born.
Cotton was their daddy's main crop. When all the family had picked it late in the summer and early fall they took it
to town on their wagon, to sell for nine cents a pound. Some years they had to pick cotton at night in order to get it
to the gin in town before the rains came.
They grew peanuts too, but they left most of them in the field for the hogs to eat. Their watermelons, turnips, and
collards were sometimes swapped for coffee and rice at the grocery store. They loaded the watermelons on their
wagon and Jenkins got to go to town with his daddy and brothers to sell them.
Often barefoot, he walked with his sisters and brothers the two miles to school in town carrying his lunch which was
wrapped in a newspaper. Biscuits with a hole punched in the top of each one, with sugar cane syrup poured into the
holes and a thick piece of fried salt pork from their smoke house was his usual lunch.
When he had his chores done he liked to play baseball with his brothers and the Tyson and Dorsey boys who lived
on the adjoining farms. In the summers, the boys enjoyed fishing in the nearby creeks, especially in Indian Creek.
He was fifteen years old when he first heard about the ships in New Orleans, Louisiana. Aubrey, his older brother,
went to sea from there and had come home full of stories about his adventures and of the money that he had been
paid. Jenkins said, "My brother Aubrey, who was three years older than I was had been going to sea about three
years when I got the urge to go myself." Mr. James B. Cobb in New Orleans who had helped Aubrey get his job was
contacted by Jenkins. He asked him to help him get a job on a ship too. Not only would he be out on his own he
thought, he would be able to see some of the world that lay beyond Covington County.

Birmingham with their father, Lee Pittman, until his death in 1927. They then came back to Babbie and lived with their aunt and
uncle. (Jeanie Woodham Moore & Ira Moore) Jack and his cousin, Ophrah Moore were both 11 years old then and were a big help to
uncle Ira on the farm. Ira was only 41 but in bad health and died 4 years later. Myrene at about age 18 got a job and an appartment
in Andalusia. Jack, at age 15, after having finished the last grade offered in the Babbie school, and after Uncle Ira's death, moved to
Andaludia and stayed with Charles and Lois Woodham Goodwin in order to finish high school.

Lois grew up on her father's farm in Babbie, Covington County, Alabama. She and her sister, Era Mae, were the youngest in a family
that included ten children born between 1879 and 1904. She attended school with mostly Woodhams, Shorts, Wiggins, Moores, and
Cobbs who lived in that part of Convigton County. When she fiished school in Babbie, She started working in a pickling factory in
River Falls Alabama. There she met what she called a young handsome veteran from WWI, Charles Goodwin. She was 20 years old ,
fell in love with him and they were married in March 1921. She always said she loved the way he "pomped his dough" (comed his hair
straight back.). While living in Frisco City AL., Lois was the lunchroom manager at Frisco City School. Lois was raised by her mama and
daddy as a footwashing hardshell Baptist. She never let the doors of the Frisco City Baptist Church open unless we were there. Her
greatest passion in life was fishing. It didn't matter wheather it was Busey Creek, Scambie Creek, Little River or Conecuh River as long
as she had plenty of bait and a good pole.(Refer to picture above and the smile on her face).

Charles Goodwin, born in Palmyra, Lowndes County AL. grew up in in the early 1900s doing farm work, going to school and playing
baseball with teams that consisted mostly of Cassadys and Sullivans. The Cassadys were the children of his aunt Fannie Cassady
(Frances Churchill Goodwin). Charlie was a pitcher and the older boys let him pitch for them, mainly because he had a pretty good
curve and a good fastball. These same older friends Talked him into joining the National Guard with them when he reached the age
of 16. The unit was activated and sent to the Texas border where trouble was expected with Pancho Villa and the Mexicans. They
were sent back to Mobile, AL and then overseas and became a part of the famed Rainbow Division in World War I. After the war,
Charles went to work with a pickling company in River Falls, Covington County AL. He was the maintenance man for the machinery.
Here he met one of the women workers, Lois Woodham. They were married on March 5, 1921. Charles became a lineman for the
Alabama Water Service Company and helped in the construction of the first power line from Andalusia AL. to Evergreen, AL. This
Company became a part of the Rural Electric Association (REA). Charles retired from the REA in 1968 in Troy, AL. after working over
the years in Frisco City, Greenville, Hartford, and Troy.

Charles Goodwin was born in River Falls and raised in Andalusia, and Frisco City, AL. He joined the Army Air Corps
just before the invasion of Pearl Harbor. He volunteered to become a member of a new parachute division being
formed and trained in Fort Benning GA. This became the 82nd Airborne Division. A member of the 505th
Parachute Infantry, he made every jump with the 82nd during World War II. After the war Charles graduated from
Troy State University with a degree in biology and later attended Auburn for courses in marine biology. He retired
from The Federal Fish And Wildlife Service and resided in Troy, Alabama until his death April 12, 2013.

Opal Lindsey says M.R.'s correct month of death is Aug. 6, 1892, and correct date of marriage is Aug. 7, 1912. He died just hours
before he and Elvie would have celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary.
Grandpa was 20 yrs. old when he married Elvie, she was 17. He lived in Poley, AL, just north of Opp and Babbie. After he married, he
went to work for the Railroad. He worked laying "ties" and rail (I think these workers were called "gandy dancers"). The men would
be transported to and from different work areas by riding on a "pump car", not the small one but a larger one for carrying men and
equipment. It had a long, see-saw type, pole with a handle at each end. The car was propelled by pulling up and pushing down on
the handles.
Grandpa changed his name to Riley Malley, R.M. Short, and was known by that name for the rest of his life. He had dark-tanned skin
and snow- white hair. Grandma called him "Riley".

My Grandma Short (Elvie Moore) always wore "housedresses", and her hair combed back in a bun. Every night, she braided it. She
was very neat, prim and proper, and outspoken. She was raised "Primitive Baptist", sometimes called "Hardshell Baptist". She loved
going to church all day on Sundays, revivals, singings, and to see baptisms at the river.
It was always said that she "cooked enough to feed Sherman's Army". She was always up before daylight. They had chickens and at
least one milk cow, that I remember. She had at least 8 children. Grandma and Grandpa were raised to share what they had.
People were always stopping by to chat and Grandpa always invited them to eat, and they usually did. There was always food and
that was the proper thing to do back then.
They moved a lot following "mill work". Grandma used to laugh when she told a story about a lady she knew. The best way, back
then, to move chickens was to wait until they went into the henhouse to roost at night. Then, you cross their legs, one over the
other, and tie them. Then you put them in the cages so they won't try to fly and get hurt.
Grandma went to visit this lady who remarked that her family had moved so often that "every night when the chickens went in to
roost, they crossed their legs before they went to sleep".
